It only took 6 minutes for Kevin Denkey to introduce himself to Columbus in the latest edition of Hell is Real. But as we've come to expect from the best rivalry in MLS, there is no space to sit comfortably on a lead. If Cincinnati had any advantage in the first half, the Crew made all the right adjustments and were relentless in their attack in the second half, eventually scoring on a Diego Rossi kick from the spot. The match ended in a 1-1 draw keeping FCC ahead of the Crew but causing them to lose a little ground to Philadelphia who now sits atop the Eastern Conference due to their early season victory over the FCC. Join us tonight at 9:00 for the full breakdown of this version of Hell is Real, a look ahead at the Atlanta match, and little US Men's National Team talk. Get your Apple MLS Season Pass. Columbus Crew. Just the name of the club struck fear into the hearts of LAFC supporters over the last year and a half. Three straight losses to the Black and Yellow, including a 5-1 drubbing at BMO, and it was easy to see why Filly and Scarf approached this match with a bit of trepidation. But this is 2025, and this is a new kind of Black and Gold club, one that suffocates you with defense while Denis Bouanga carves you up from the left. Here on Episode 346, listen as Scarf, Lafferty, and even Filly break down the somewhat surprising beatdown LAFC gave Columbus, 3-0. Also on this episode, we revisit the LAFC days of Diego Rossi, spawn the unlikely mashup of Andre the Giant and Andre Horta, and wish Mama Bufanda the happiest of birthdays!
David Beckham's Inter Miami secured their latest piece of silverware on Wednesday night, with a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew crowning them winners of the MLS Supporters' Shield. The win, powered by two goals from Lionel Messi and one from Luis Suárez, gave Miami the best regular-season record for the first time in the club's history. The Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the top record over the regular season, adds another trophy to Miami's collection after their Leagues Cup triumph earlier in the year. Beckham, the club's owner, paid tribute to the squad, highlighting Messi's contributions once again as the Argentine continued his dazzling form with two goals."So proud to see our players lift the Supporters' Shield after a great win in Columbus," Beckham wrote on Instagram. "Another amazing achievement in the history of this football club and so happy to bring this trophy to the best fans in the League. Now we go again and onto the next one."Messi opened the scoring late in the first half with a free-kick, followed by another goal just before halftime, giving Inter Miami a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. However, the match quickly became a nail-biter when Columbus' Diego Rossi found the back of the net within a minute of the second half, narrowing the gap to 2-1.Three minutes later, Suárez restored Miami's two-goal cushion, netting his 18th goal of the season. But Columbus wasn't done yet. Cucho Hernandez converted a penalty just after the hour mark, bringing Columbus within one goal once more. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Rudy Camacho was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.Columbus had one final chance to tie the game from the penalty spot, but Hernandez's second attempt from 12 yards went wide with just five minutes remaining. That miss sealed Miami's 3-2 victory and the Eastern Conference crown.Messi, ever focused, reminded everyone that there's still more to accomplish. "The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," Messi said after the game. "The first round [of the playoffs] is three games, but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home."With two more regular-season matches against Toronto and New England ahead, Inter Miami is looking to maintain momentum heading into the playoffs, where the ultimate goal is to lift the MLS Cup in December.Despite their 3-2 win, Messi and his teammates weren't handed the trophy on the field. Instead, they reportedly celebrated privately in the locker room because the trophy was still in Columbus. The real complication stems from the fact that none of Miami's supporter groups are officially part of the Independent Supporters Council, the body that governs the Shield. Without formal ISC membership, Inter Miami's Supporters' Shield win can't be fully recognized yet. Four groups have applied to join, but their approval could take weeks, adding uncertainty to when the Shield will officially be theirs.Though they weren't presented the trophy after the Columbus win, Inter Miami may finally be able to showcase it to fans during their final home game of the season on October 20 against New England Revolution, assuming the ISC issue is resolved in time. For now, the club's claim to the Shield is in limbo, leaving fans eagerly waiting for a formal crowning momentUnlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! Two games, one week, zero intelligent thoughts from our podcast. Darren, Vince, and Travis break down Diego Rossi's homecoming back to BMO which also just happens to be a re-match of the MLS Cup Final we all remember so fondly. Then they chat with Chris Walker, head of Black Diamonds, a BIPOC Supporter Group from New Mexico United, and he does honestly a really good job convincing them to become New Mexico fans. It's like, a surprisingly great pitch. They might convert. Plus, we finally talk about a certain game that happened last week against a certain team that we all agree isn't very good at soccer. LAFC continues its impressive streak with a 7-0 record in season openers, showcasing consistent success since 2018. Notably, they secured their latest victory against Seattle on Feb 24, 2024, with a 2-1 score. Facing Seattle twice in home openers, LAFC emerged victorious in both encounters, including their inaugural match on March 4, 2018, marking a significant milestone for the Black & Gold. Timothy Tillman contributed a crucial goal in the 45th minute, becoming the first scorer for LAFC in 2024. He joins a distinguished list of players, including Diego Rossi, Carlos Vela, Corey Baird, and others, who opened the scoring for LAFC in previous seasons. In the home opener, eight players from the 2023 MLS Cup Final featured for LAFC, highlighting the team's continuity and the experience of players like Denis Bouanga, Cristian Olivera, Ilie Sanchez, and more. The match saw the MLS debuts of Hugo Lloris and Omar Campos, adding new talent to LAFC's roster. Additionally, Eddie Segura made a significant return as he came on as a substitute in the 90th minute, marking his first MLS action since the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs, where he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023 MLS regular season
In this episode of VOBG we reluctantly dive into the disappointing aftermath of the 2023 MLS Cup Final. From Carlos Vela's scoring struggles to facing former teammate Diego Rossi on the opposing side, we confront the harsh realities of a season that promised glory but left us with more questions than answers. With no Orlando City match to recap, we turned our attention to the United States Men's National Team's performance in the recent international window. We aren't as angst-ridden about the 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Uzbekistan and Oman, respectively, as many people are, but there is certainly room for improvement and it wasn't the best two games from Sergino Dest or Christian Pulisic, but the Yanks still got their wins. Tougher tests await and hopefully the squad will be fully fit for the next window. After that brief check-in with the USMNT — and please forgive our lack of recapping a somewhat meh 1-1 road draw by OCB at New England Revolution II and the Young Lions' subsequent shootout loss — we welcomed Collin Johnson from Massive Report to the program to give us all of the information on Orlando City's opponents tomorrow night, the Columbus Crew. Collin did a great job of getting us up to speed on all things Columbus, including how new players like Diego Rossi are fitting into Wilfried Nancy's system. Big apologies to our founders for not notifying you in advance of our guest for this show, but it wasn't confirmed until we were within an hour of recording time, so it came together quite late. After our chat with Collin, we looked into our mailbagbox, where we were asked to chronologically predict some suggested big evens in a possible MLS future. Remember, if there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We looked ahead to OCB's big match tonight on the road against Chicago Fire FC II, and, finally, previewed Orlando City vs. Columbus, complete with our key matchups and score predictions. Here's how No. 375 went down: 0:15 – Orlando City was off last weekend so we discussed the USMNT's two matches in the international window. 11:28 – Collin Johnson from Massive Report jumps on and gives us a comprehensive overview of the Columbus Crew. 29:05 – Our mailbagbox, OCB's impending game at Chicago, and our key matchups and predictions for Saturday's date with the Crew. Season 5 is almost upon us, and we here at Defenders Nation, preachers of the Black and Gold gospel, absolutely cannot wait! With our new vestments freshly unpacked, the "5 Years Strong" kit, we are indeed feeling stronger than ever. But while the kit may be new, and the coach may be new, and many of the players may be new, the goal remains the same: win the whole damn thing! Here on Episode 180, it's a solo Scarf endeavor, as Filly takes a short break from the pod to continue to kill it over in MASL-land. Not to worry, however, as Scarf takes you through all the happenings in pre-season. Out in Windio, LAFC gains their wings with a 6-1 drubbing of the Red Bulls after a no-show against DC, and the performance by Rayito has Scarf right back on the bandwagon. LAFC wasn't done "tweaking" the roster, or the front office! Marco Antonio Garces comes over from Pachuca in what feels like a huge move for the FO. Ryan Hollingshead and Doneil Henry give the Defenders of the Banc two new defenders to support, and we welcome the Mayor's staff to the sidelines, including one coach who stayed, one who returned, and one who will coach our keepers. We spotlight players of the past, including updates on Eduard Atuesta and Diego Rossi, players of the present, as Eddie Segura and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi recover from injury, and players of the future, as Nathan Ordaz and Marvin Gamez headline the next budding young crop of talent. Wait until you hear about all the LAFC Academy talent and girls from LAFC SoCal Youth called into US national youth camps! What happened during the Academy's Open Cup qualifying run? What's the South Korean connection between Kim Moon-Hwan and Canadian Doneil Henry? Is it Furman College or Furman University? To get the answers to these, and all your other Black and Gold queries, please enjoy Episode 180 of Defenders of the Banc! Is it Opening Day yet?!
For the final time in 2021, the boys are at World Famous Filimonster Studios to record an episode of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth”, Defenders of the Banc! There is SO much news to discuss since our pasting at the hands of the Commerce City Rapids, and Filly and Scarf try to get to ALL of it! This offseason saw, without a doubt, the most significant player movement of any of our first four seasons. El Profe, Eduard Atuesta, is gone, and not to a club that many could have predicted. Eduard gets to try to make it a Copa Libertadores three-peat for Brazil's Palmeiras. Also gone is the only coach we have ever known, Bob Bradley, as he heads north of the border to drink Labatt's and coach his son, Michael, at Toronto. He's been given the keys to the kingdom, eh, as he was named both head gaffer and Sporting Director at TFC. Also gone is an unsung hero who truly has been there from the beginning, Defender of the Banc Tristan Blackmon. Picked with our second ever SuperDraft pick in 2018, Tristan leaves behind a legacy of grit, toughness, and a fun social media follow. Who will play keeper? With Jamal Blackman being given his walking papers and Pablo Sisniega traded to the new Al Raitt FC, Charlotte, Tomas Romero is the only keeper under contract as of the recording of Episode 178. Also gone, as of now, are Raheem Edwards, Jordan Harvey, Daniel Crisostomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Michee Ngalina. LAFC has also begun to re-tool, or “tweak”, as JT put it, by bringing in two players with bona fide MLS Cup experience. The newest Defender of the Banc, Franco Escobar, comes to us by way of Atlanta United, where he scored the second goal in their 2-0 MLS Cup win over Portland in 2018. The Argentinian looks to help the Black and Gold on the wings. Fresh off winning MLS Cup with NYCFC in 2021, then being drafted by Charlotte in the Expansion Draft, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi lands with LAFC by way of a trade with MLS's newest club. In the mold of a Danny Musovski-type, or, dare we say, Adama Diomande, Israel knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and provides much-needed depth when Chicho, Rayito, or Vela are off the pitch. And don't forget, Defenders… we also get a full season of Chicho Arango, a healthy Eddie Segura, and (at least) a full half-season of a healthy Carlos Vela. (We explain, don't worry.) All we need now is a head coach. And a starting center midfielder. And a starting keeper. And a little more depth. Also on this episode, we celebrate Chicho Arango taking home the Newcomer of the Year Award for 2021, the U19's as they advance in Open Cup Qualifying, and Lee Nguyen's NWSL trophy! We get a new toy in Filimonster Studios, we circle some key dates on the calendar that we are looking forward to, and Scarf doesn't have Covid (according to two tests) even though he feels and sounds like death. Which inaugural team player signed to coach with Sister Jean over at Loyola-Chicago? How is Diego Rossi doing in Turkey or Christian Ramirez in Scotland? And why does Filly now have a vested interest in our eMLS player? You'll have to listen to find out! Finally, stick around for the end, please. We know it's long, but Filly and Scarf both chat about their New Year's Resolutions, or as Filly says, goals for 2022. This may be it for 2021, but we can't wait to experience what's in store for 2022! Defenders Nation, thank you, and we love you! Here's to all the best in 2022 to the millions… and millions!
Friends, Supporters, Black and Gold faithful, lend us your ears. For a really long time. We bring on the newest President of the 3252, KC Garcia, to discuss all things Black and Gold, including our big 3-1 win over San Jose, our playoff chances, the Defenders' first time in the North End, and so, so much more. But… there's a bit of a catch. Episode 172 was a bit like your favorite roller coaster: there were ups, there were downs, there were twists and turns, times we were completely upside down and almost off the track, there was screaming, laughing, crying, and everything in-between. And that was just during the recording process. You see, Episode 172 was recorded over the span of two days, and two separate attempts at getting out a complete episode. Technical difficulties were plenty, about an hour of recording was lost, and the wonderful KC was kind enough to come BACK to Filimonster Studios about 12 hours after he left it to re-record the first half of the episode. So what does all that mean? It's a wonderful, meandering, sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, and long episode that touches on so many different topics. Rather than a traditional interview-style episode, we pepper KC with questions and stories throughout the episode, sometimes in-between the game recap, during the news and notes segments, and especially during the last 30 minutes or so of the episode. To put it bluntly, KC is amazing. He's honest, he's funny, he's patient, and, at times, he's emotional as he talks about those that came before him, his goals and vision for the future of The 3252, his VP and co-pilot on this journey, Sujin Lee, and much more. Like we said, he's great!Yes, there is also a breakdown of our big win at home over the Earthquakes, our first time both in the North End and on the surface of the sun, This Day in LAFC History, News and Notes, and all the other usual content you've come to know, expect, and hopefully love. Our favorite hashtag, #BlameFilly, is back and better than ever! Scarfstradamus is wrong, again. (shocking…) Diego Rossi scores for Fenerbahce, Tyler Miller puts up another clean sheet, Christopher Walken makes an appearance or two (so bummed we lost the first audio!), and we lay it all out there about our playoff chances this season. If you're only going to listen to part of this long, long, episode, we understand. We hope it'll be the part after the game recap, where we spend a little extra time talking with KC. He has some really wonderful and poignant things to say, and we couldn't be prouder than to have had him on our podcast. Again, our apologies for the technical issues and the occasional disjointed nature of this one. We hope you enjoy Episode 172!
LAFC headed up to the usually-friendly confines of PayPal Park for a lovely Saturday evening in San Jose, and, unfortunately, for the Black and Gold, it was a house of horrors. LAFC loses to the Smurfs, 2-0, and the playoff chase for LAFC becomes a little harder. But yay, Filly's back from Orlando!Right out of the gate, a disaster of a header pass from Mamadou Fall leads to Chofis finding a streaking Benji Kikanovic for an early 1-0 San Jose lead. After a completely uninspiring first half, LAFC came out looking to avoid the kind of mistakes they started the first half and… did exactly the same thing. Two LAFC players chose to pass in their own box rather than clear the lines or just head the damn ball out of bounds, which, of course, leads to the second goal of the match for San Jose, this one off the foot of Chofis. Despite a line change in the 58' which led to more energy, better pace, and a few more scoring chances, LAFC couldn't find one. The Black and Gold leave San Jose losers of two straight, this one at the hands of the Earthquakes, 2-0. Also on this episode, we celebrate clinching the Supporters Shield on TDILH, we check in on Diego Rossi in Turkey, and we welcome Michee Ngalina to the Black and Gold! Filly is exhausted, Scarf's voice is shot, and, most importantly, Filimonster Studios is getting a new address! Check out Episode 169 of Defenders of the Banc for all your Black and Gold needs!
LAFC touched down in Portland riding the high of a three-game win streak and a newly found goal scoring touch. Leave it to the fake grass, rain, and physical play of Portland to throw the 2021 season back into flux. The Black and Gold lose a frustrating one, 2-1, as they leave several chances unfinished at Providence Park. Hear all about it here on Episode 168!Playing against Portland is never comfortable, and their physical style tends to throw LAFC off their game a bit. This was certainly true throughout this one, and 4 yellow cards did little to deter them. After Brian Rodriguez missed a gorgeous opportunity in the 19', Portland capitalized just two minutes later. A corner and several headers find Dairon Asprilla, who heads home the opening salvo for Portland. LAFC would answer quickly, however, as a PK by Chicho, his 5th straight game with a goal, would level things before the half. During the opening moments of the second half, we almost... almost saw MLS's Goal of the Year by Jose Cifuentes. From about 40 yards out, Cifu caught Steve Clark off his line, but the ball banged loudly off the post and away. Just past the hour mark, somehow, somehow Cifu misses a wide open net off a pass from Chicho. Both he and the Defenders will be seeing this one in their sleep for some time. Oy. Portland would answer right after the LAFC miss, as sub George Fochive is able to put a rebound home with his head, and that would be it for LAFC despite 20 minutes remaining. Bob subbed in Latif, Chiqui, Moose, and eventually Bryce Duke, but it wasn't meant to be in Portland. LAFC falls below the playoff line again, and the fight continues. Also on this episode, it's just Scarf. That's right. Filly is in Orlando, and a couple last minute cancellations lead to this one being a solo Scarf project. Diego Rossi plays well, twice in one week, for Fenerbahce, while the Las Vegas Lights don't lose! It's very likely LAFC's roster is now frozen, but the cast and crew of Ted Lasso are hot, taking home multiple Emmys! Let's hope LAFC can be just as successful as they head to San Jose for a mid-week tilt against the Quakes!
Sometimes you're lucky. Sometimes you're good. In LAFC's match against RSL at the Banc this week, we were definitely a little bit of both! LAFC wins consecutive games for just the third time this season, 3-2 over Real Salt Lake, and you can hear all about how it went down on Episode 166. If you weren't in your seat at the start of the match, you missed history! Eduard Atuesta takes the ball through the middle of the pitch, finds Bryce Duke, and after a small deflection, Chicho Arango puts it in the back of the net just 20 seconds from the opening whistle. It's the fastest goal in LAFC history, and the 8th fastest goal ever in MLS. LAFC is up 1-0, and the roller coaster ride has begun.RSL and LAFC would trade goals near the half-hour mark, as Damir Kreilach found the back of the net against us once again. Yeesh. Just two minutes later, Eduard Atuesta drops a dime from above and Chicho is able to head it in past Ochoa to re-take the lead. Coming out of the halftime break, LAFC gives up another headscratcher. A bad turnover by Bryce Duke leads to a run out from Anderson Julio, and RSL has equalized yet again. Not to worry, Black and Gold Faithful, because tonight, for one of the first times all season, the futbol gods are on OUR side. Right before the hour mark, Toni Datkovic attempts to make a simple back pass to his keeper, David Ochoa. However, the pass was a little to the right of Ochoa, and as he slipped, the RSL keeper could only helplessly watch as the ball trickled into the back of the net. Both sides traded opportunities, but LAFC holds on for the win, 3-2. Also on this episode, Filly doesn't just channel Barry Manilow, you may actually think he is in the room with us. Scarf waxes on about TGLA while ranting against the negativity in the LAFC fan pages (after a winning streak!). LAFC signs a keeper, Diego Rossi debuts for Fenebache, the Las Vegas Lights still haven't won, and it's Happy Former Keeper Birthday time on This Day in LAFC History! The club is off to Austin and the boys are off to bed, but not before we give you Episode 166 of The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth!

In Los Angeles, it's not the leaves changing color, or a crispness in the air, or even the smell of pumpkin spice in every Starbucks and Trader Joe's that signal the coming of fall in 2021. This year, it's the sound of the 3252 roaring as our own Defender of the Banc, Mamadou Fall, scores a brace at the Banc to give LAFC its biggest win of 2021! It's Episode 165, the first of the post-Diego Rossi era, and it's Fall! The first 17 minutes-plus gave no indication of the season change that was coming. SKC dominated long stretches of the early part of the match, but LAFC's defense played well. In the 18th minute, LAFC earns a corner, taken by Eduard Atuesta. A perfect corner finds Mamadou Fall, the 18-year old Senegalese defender who has been a beacon of light on the rough seas of the 2021 season. Rising above the defense, Fall heads it cleanly into the back of the net to give LAFC a bit of a shock lead, 1-0. LAFC would hold serve through the first half and head to the locker room up a goal. In the second half, Red Card Roger reared his head once again, as Roger Espinoza is shown red for an unintentional-but-awful looking on Chicho Arango, and SKC was shook. Latif earns LAFC a free kick at the hour mark, and the pair of Atuesta and Fall were back at it! Off the set piece, Mamadou gets on the end of another perfect ball, heading it across goal for a brace and a two-goal lead for LAFC! 10 minutes later, Duke, Moose, and Chicho link up for LAFC's third, and it looked like the lead was finally safe from our 80th minute curse. Just to be sure, Eduard Atuesta buried a Musovski-earned PK in the 85th minute to put the Black and Gold up 4, and the party was on at the Banc! Also on this episode, Jordan Harvey gets some burn, Filly rants about the haters, and Scarf remembers Tommy Mark on the 3rd anniversary of his sudden passing. Of course, there's This Day In LAFC History, a rundown of our boys on international duty, and a short prayer to prevent injuries during kickball. We hope you enjoy Episode 165 almost as much as our incredible victory over Sporting!

In this episode we talk about the USMNT vs. Costa Rica, Diego Rossi transfer rumors and more!
