The 1999 US Women's National Team made history with its second World Cup win. While names like Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy and Brandu Chastain typically stole the headlines, the hallmark of that squad was its team dynamic. The leadership of Foudy and Carla Overbeck ensured that every member of the squad felt valued and had a role to play. Saskia Webber embodied that concept. Despite being the backup goalkeeper, to Brianna Scurry, Webber became a fan favorite with her exuberant personality and red, white and blue colored hair. The Rutgers Hall of Famer later played in the WUSA, coached at the college level and has gone on to become part of the Angel City FC ownership group. Growing up in Arizona and playing soccer, they both looked up to the USWNT that won multiple World Cups and Olympic Gold medals, and created a path of empowerment and achievement in life. Mia talks about the responsibility and opportunity that the team embraced, knowing that young eyes across the country were watching their every move, raising twin girls, filming a legendary Gatorade commercial with Michael Jordan and what his support meant, exhausting practices that tested her mental fortitude, and how she was introduced to the game of soccer, and the WWE superstar that used to throw her into a pool as a kid that went on to also have a Hall of Fame career. Mia also highlights the importance of her big brother Garrett, whom she admired greatly, who passed away in 1997 from complications following a bone marrow transplant (BMT) his family hoped could help cure aplastic anemia, a rare bone marrow disease he was battling at the time, which is why bone marrow transplant support and gave her a new mission in life to help other families, teaming up with Incyte to make sure they get the tools and information they need with a procedure that can have serious complications like Graft Versus Host Disease (GVHD). Mia closes out the episode with a special Inspiration & Affirmation that focuses on being present in a world that's full of distractions. For more on Mia's work with BMT and GVHD check out this link Find out more about bone marrow transplants at The Mia Hamm Foundation Follow Mia on Instagram Call Nikki & Brie at 833-GARCIA2 and leave a voicemail!Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram and send Nikki & Brie a message on Threads! To watch exclusive videos of this week's episode, follow The Nikki & Brie Show on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok!

Sports Legends of the Carolinas

Erin Matson was arguably the best field hockey player in NCAA history. While at UNC, she led the Tar Heels to four national championships, and three times she was named the national player of the year. Then came a startling twist -- at age 22, only one month after graduation, Matson was named the head coach of the very UNC team she had been starring for, replacing Karen Shelton.  Shelton won 10 NCAA titles at UNC, so Matson (now age 23) begins her coaching career with big shoes to fill. Think of it like this: What if Mia Hamm had finished her college career at UNC and then had immediately started coaching the Tar Heels' women's soccer team? That's what has happened here, just in a different sport. In this interview, Matson talks about coaching players who some cases are literally older than she is, as well as her upbringing in Pennsylvania and the part of coaching she just hasn't mastered yet. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Loumay Alesali, Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Our interns on this production are Zoe Williams and Christina Silvestri. The Negative Impacts of Youth Sports and What to Do About It with Scott Lancaster    Through this conversation, Mathew and Scott hope to help parents and coaches develop a renewed sense of how they might act when it comes to children in youth sports. Mathew, a former athlete and current youth sports coach for his own children, is intimately familiar with the negative impacts that bad coaching can have on children and is actively working to develop his athletes in this new, more holistic way Scott is championing. It's imperative that coaches understand who they are coaching, what they can and cannot do, and keep expectations age-appropriate despite the desire to advance children quickly through the ranks. Scott and Mathew talk about the role that bad coaching and parenting in youth sports have had on the current mental health crisis, the "inner child wounds" many kids develop through sports, and the ways in which negative and positive childhood sports experiences follow people through their entire lives and impact their self-image into adulthood. Many people say youth sports were great for them or their children, but Scott ponders the counterfactual that we can never know how great they could have been if they had not played the game. Scott goes on to give specific examples of ways children are being damaged by youth sports and possible solutions to the problems. From small changes, like swapping "Did you win?" for "How did you play?", to larger structural changes like reframing the way we think about the purpose of youth sports. There is a close connection between how we coach youth sports and how we parent children, and both have to shift towards developing more resilient kids by teaching them how to deal with losing more than striving to win and talking to them about what they are feeling to help them internalize what they are doing. Scott Lancaster is one of three co-founders of Whole Child Sports. WCS "offers parents and coaches guidance, tips, and tools to help raise and develop happier, healthier, more well-rounded athletes who will sustain a lifetime passion for active play and fitness." As a former athlete and current parent, youth sports and youth athletes have been a passion of Scott's for more than 20 years. He spent six years with US Soccer, working directly with Mia Hamm and other U.S. Women's National Team players to increase representation and participation in the sport. He also spent 12 years with the NLF, developing youth programming. Throughout his career, Scott has worked with many of the Greats in professional sports to make significant and important changes in the philosophy of sports, the youth-to-professional pipeline, and the way sports operate in order to focus on improving youth development. "Youth sports, as good as they've been for some, have been terrifying for others…" In this episode, you'll hear: Practical ways parents can shift to start raising healthier children through athletics Tips for coaches to step into this new system of developing youth athletes What it means that "kids should not play adult games" and ideas to restructure youth sports What do action sports athletes get that traditional athletes miss out on? First, Dom welcomes back Riley Gaines, a national advocate for women's sports, onto the podcast to hear what she's been up to recently as the strongest voice speaking out against the inclusion of Trans individuals in female sports. Riley tells about her campaign of asking powerful women in sports to speak alongside her, providing an update on whether she's heard back from any of these power players including Mia Hamm, the Williams sisters, and Ronda Rousey. Gaines takes Dom and listeners into the locker room she shared with Penn swimmer Lia Thomas, telling in-depth her experience and surprise when she saw the Trans swimmer disrobe nearby. Descovich reveals that former President Donald Trump, front-runner for the 2024 nomination, has been added to a list that includes Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and others. Tina tells that there will be more names added, and gives Dom a look inside the booking of the event as more and more nationally recognized names join the event. Descovich reveals that President Biden has been invited multiple times but all the organization has received has been silence. From growing up in the rural parts of Oregon in the days of Clive Charles, to playing and achieving hall of fame status at UC Berkeley, to leaving college early for USWNT call ups and playing pro up top with the likes of Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm; Laura Schott can do it all. She went on to coach D1 college soccer at Portland State and is currently coaching D3 at George Fox University while she also commentates for the NWSL Portland Thorns. But most importantly she is a dear friend and former teammate of many of us here at FF. Laura brings a quirky, dry sense of humor, rich experiences and informed opinions to our conversation. This is our first of many conversations and we can't wait to have her back to discuss all types of current events in the female soccer space. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/femalefootballers/support

There' no time to pop bottles, because BIG things are happening! First Nikki & Brie give exclusive details on the return to the WWE and then they sit down for an amazing conversation with Olympic Gold Medal skier Lindsey Vonn! It's been a while since Nikki & Brie have been in the ring together and on today's episode of The Bellas Podcast, they talk about their road back, why they're excited to return to the WWE, who they're most excited to see at the 2022 Women's Royal Rumble, and some possible strategies for the big event.Nikki elaborates on the process to get cleared for a comeback and Brie is excited to share her fitness journey to getting ring-ready for the big event. Also…there might be some bad blood from their last Royal Rumble. So it's not just Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch that need to be on high alert in St. Louis because there could be a few grudges that get settled by the Bella Twins. Then Nikki & Brie welcome a woman that they have tremendous respect for, Lindsey Vonn. Brie starts out by telling Lindsey why her member, “Rise: My Story,” was so inspiring to her and Nikki follows that up by talking about shared influences, breaking barriers, being bold in a world that wanted to tame her, and her openness about mental health. They also talk to Lindsey about connecting with her feminine side while still crushing the competition, how close she came to quitting, the highs and lows of competing at such a high level, and finding purpose after retiring from competitive skiing. Then Nikki & Brie cross the finish line Lindsey when she shares her Inspiration & Affirmation, the words that mean the most to her going into 2022 and a new chapter of her life. Follow Lindsey on Instagram and order her new book, “Rise: My Story.” Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram and join them every Friday for an Instagram Live when they answer your questions about that week's episode of The Bellas Podcast!
