Season 10 Special-Release Bonus 6: Kidney Bean Reflection Series: The ConclusionO–100 km/h in 3.5 Seconds. But Did You Die?WARNING: This episode includes discussion about the confronting topic of live organ donation.Trajce, CJ, and Sara use this episode to conclude the special 6-part reflection series on kidney donation. Alan continued to sun himself in Tassie.Part 5 of the reflection series ended on a cliffhanger before describing the acute hospital experience. There are a few things that nobody tells you about the realities of live kidney donation and this episode delves into those hidden treasures...."Where is the organ donation speciality centre in Australia?" asks Sara.Trajce describes the contrasts between the donee (kidney recipient) and the donor hospital ward experience, "Oh, so CJ was in the executive lounge, and you were in the back of the bus on the aluminium seats." Sara recounts some of the confusion and complications associated with her acute post-surgical hospital ward experience. She connects these reflections with her training in and understanding of complex, dynamic systems management. CJ contextualises these ideas by highlighting the conflict between what someone expects in healthcare versus the realities of their experiences."But did you know that all your bits go blue? Smurf or Smurfette when bloodflow returns," laughs Sara, "These are more realities that you simply discover as a donor or donee, and did not receive education on or know to expect!" Trajce jokes, "the is the real lived experience. You experienced it and you really lived it, with chills that were multiplying...".Yet, aligned with the theme of this part of the series, Sara asks "But did you die?” because here she is, and CJ, able to live a life and tell the story of the miracle of kidney donation. They give thanks to the many people in the inner circle who helped them during this time. CJ appreciated, "I think I had a Gold Pass, I think I've done all right through all this," while Trajce reflects, "Yeah, he was on speed dial for priority care."

Whether you're studying, working, reading, sleeping, or unwinding after a long day, this immersive ambient soundscape provides the perfect background soundtrack. No talking, no interruptions—just pure lo-fi relaxation and meandering sounds.______Going to be on vacation, so I have premade and scheduled this post. So as you read this, I am hopefully on a beach staring toward the horizon, thinking of the Spanish Navy captain whose ship was ambushed by pirates and sunk. The captain survived ten days underwater. The year was 1634, February 13th, a day before Valentine's—but Captain Ortega was from Spain, so they wouldn't be celebrating Valentine's Day yet. To him, it was just a Wednesday. Captain Ortega, a youthful Santa Claus-looking dude, parked his tall ship behind a barrier reef for the night. The pirates snuck in on a sloop and blasted Ortega's ship with cannons. There was a terrific fire that crippled the ship and plunged her into the depths.Ten days later, Ortega is found sprawled out on a beach, clutching his logbook. He eventually describes how he survived the attack and was rescued by brightly colored sea Smurfs called Snorks. They were no bigger than his thumb, he relayed, and he was not believed. The historical record notes that Ortega had delirium.Fast forward to the 1980s: a man has found Captain Ortega's logbook in a monastery overlooking the sea. The man who found the logbook is also (ostensibly) a sea captain—he's wearing a sea captain's hat like that dude from Captain & Tennille. I guess that makes him... Captain. Another captain...Anyway, the Captain & Tennille-looking captain from the 1980s believes what he has read in Captain Ortega's logbook. “There's something about Captain Ortega's story that makes me believe it's true.”Now I've told you the whole story. See it here if you don't believe me. Do the Snorks exist? Or was Captain Ortega drunk-driving his tall ship? Also, I watched all the seasons of Snorks, and humans never show up. The Captain & Tennille-looking captain's story ends in the Season 1 Snorks cartoon intro. We never get a resolution, never see another human again in the show. Moreover, it's 1664, and Captain Ortega is not in Spain. What were you up to, Ortega?

What Color Should I Paint My House? A Step-by-Step Framework for Getting It Right

RepcoLite Home Improvement Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2026 40:16

Note: This episode originally aired in June 2025. The RepcoLite Endura sale mentioned at the end ran through the end of that month.Episode SummaryThis week on Home In Progress, Dan dedicates the entire show to one topic: choosing exterior paint colors without the stress, the second-guessing, or the Smurf house. He adapts a color training that RepcoLite's own Haley developed for store employees, adds a few of his own thoughts along the way, and walks listeners through everything from basic ground rules to architectural styles to brick homes to how many colors are actually too many. Practical, thorough, and worth saving if you've got an exterior project anywhere on your horizon. In This Episode[00:49] -- Sweet Corn Disaster Story[06:20] -- Why Exterior Color Choices Are So Stressful[08:41] -- The Training Framework from Haley[09:39] -- Three Ground Rules Before You Pick a Single Color[13:27] -- Working With What's Already There[20:00] -- Architectural Styles and Their Traditional Color Palettes[25:53] -- Working With Brick[30:08] -- How Many Colors Does an Exterior Need?[33:29] -- Shutters and Doors[34:42] -- Final Tips and Tools[37:43] -- Picking the Right PaintOpening: The Sweet Corn Incident [00:49]Dan opens with a story from his week that he feels compelled to share and equally compelled to forget. Hot dogs and sweet corn for dinner. A deep-in-thought face while eating. His daughter Hannah catching the whole thing and trying not to laugh. Dan catching her. And then, involuntarily, the entire table getting covered in sweet corn. The family was not pleased. The corn was found in unexpected places for weeks. Dan relates this story on live radio to a large audience, which he acknowledges is exactly the kind of decision that defines him. From there, on to the actual show. Why Exterior Color Choices Are So Stressful [06:20]Dan did some research on how other homeowners describe the experience of choosing exterior paint colors. A few real quotes he pulled:"I cried. A lot, actually.""It was the most stressed I've ever been."One person described the finished result as looking "so childish. It was like a Smurf house, and I couldn't afford to have it repainted."It's not an irrational reaction. The exterior of a home is visible to everyone who drives by. Getting it wrong costs real money and time, and it's on display for the whole neighborhood to see. Getting it right matters. The Training Framework from Haley [08:41]This episode is built around a color training module that Haley -- longtime show co-host, now full-time RepcoLite product and color trainer -- recently developed for store employees. Dan adapted it for the show and gives her full credit throughout. What follows is largely her framework, with Dan's thoughts mixed in.Three Ground Rules Before You Pick a Single Color [09:39]1. Colors Look Lighter OutsideOutdoors, with the sun as the light source, your colors are going to look two to three shades lighter than that same color would look inside the home. This is one of the most common exterior paint mistakes. Someone picks a mid-tone gray, it looks clearly gray on the chip, and then comes back to say it looks almost white on the house. The fix: choose colors a couple shades darker than you want the final result to look. It feels counterintuitive, but it's how it works.2. Scale Changes EverythingThe exterior of a home is a huge canvas, and colors gain strength at that scale. The "Smurf house" situation almost always comes from a color that looked good at smaller doses but became overwhelming when it covered the whole exterior.Look for toned colors that have some gray in them. They're easier on the eye, feel more sophisticated, and don't overwhelm at large scale. Good starting places: Benjamin Moore's Affinity Collection, the Historic Collections, and the Williamsburg Collection (144 muted tones inspired by 18th century colonial homes). These fan decks are safe bets that scale beautifully on big surfaces.3. Sample on the Actual SurfaceBenjamin Moore color samples put real paint in your hands. Use them. Paint a large area -- at least two feet by two feet -- directly on the siding, brick, or whatever surface you're actually painting. Texture affects how color looks, so a smooth foam board won't give you an accurate read. Paint the real surface, then observe it in the morning, at midday, and in the evening before you decide anything.Working With What's Already There [13:27]Before you even open a fan deck, take stock of the materials already on your home that aren't changing. These aren't limitations -- they're clues. Constraints, it turns out, actually help narrow decisions rather than just frustrating them. Research in psychology shows that small obstacles can increase creative problem-solving by nearly 40%. The things that feel like limits are often what give you a direction to push from.Landscaping and Fixed Materials [16:06]Landscaping -- Easy to forget about if you're choosing colors in winter, but it plays a big role. A lot of green in the yard -- hostas, ferns, evergreens -- means you probably don't want a green exterior. The house will disappear into the yard. Lots of white blossoms in spring? Maybe skip white for the body color. Look at the dominant tones in the landscaping and choose colors that complement them, not match or compete with them.Unpainted materials -- Stonework, brick, block foundations all have color. If you're leaving them as-is, they should guide your choices. Dan drives past a house where the stone has a cool bluish tone and the new siding clashes with it. From straight on you don't notice it. From an angle where they meet, it's jarring. Let permanent features inform your palette.Gutters, downspouts, fascia, and soffits -- These can be painted or changed, but if you're not planning to, factor them in.Roof Color [17:36]The biggest and least flexible element on most homes. Roofs don't get replaced often, so their color really matters when you're making paint decisions. As a general rule, the body of the house should be lighter than the roof. Gray or black roof: cooler tones like blues and grays tend to work better. Brown roof: warmer tones like beige, taupe, and red are usually a safer bet.Architectural Styles and Their Traditional Color Palettes [20:00]Style Guides, Not Rules [20:00]Unless you're in a historic district with regulations to follow, you're not locked in to any particular color scheme based on the style of your home. Architecture can guide and suggest. It doesn't have to dictate. Dan's main message going into this section: you've got more freedom than you probably think.Colonial Color Classics [21:30](Cape Cod, Georgian, Dutch Colonial)Traditional palette: muted classic neutrals for the body -- crisp whites, soft creams, beiges, grays. Usually paired with darker accent colors for doors, shutters, and trim: dark green, black, barn red, or yellow.Victorian Color Freedom [22:07]Lots of options here. More than most people realize. You can go rich jewel tones like emeralds or sapphires, soft pastels, or anything in between. There really aren't many firm rules with Victorian architecture. If you've got a Victorian home, stretch a little and have some fun.Craftsman Earthy Palettes [22:49](Bungalows, four-squares, Mission-influenced homes)These homes are about warmth, craftsmanship, and natural materials. Traditionally they lean toward earthy, muted colors -- browns, sages, grays. Colors that feel grounded and historically accurate for the style. Mustard and olive accents work particularly well as a way to modernize without losing the character.Ranch and Mid-Century Options [23:53]Mid-century Americana. Earthy tones are most common for the body: beige, taupe, brown, tan. White or brown for the trim. Burgundy or deep green for doors and shutters. That said, ranches in the '50s and '60s could be pretty expressive -- soft pastels on the body with bright doors and shutters wasn't unusual, and it still works on the right house.Working With Brick [25:53]Brick deserves its own section because it shows up across all architectural styles and it's frequently handled wrong.Brick isn't really a single color. It's a texture and a collection of tones that your eye averages into one overall impression. Any painted surface on a brick home -- shutters, trim, doors, foundation -- should take a backseat to the brick. That's the guiding principle. The most common mistake: going straight to white trim. White is too stark against brick. It breaks up the home's natural flow and creates visual tension. The brick is absorbing light while the white trim bounces it back aggressively, and the result just looks wrong.Instead, choose trim colors that recede: dark taupes, browns, blacks, dark blues, teals, greens. These complement the warm orangey-red tones in most brick without competing for attention. The house ends up looking more settled and intentional. If you're committed to lighter trim on a brick home, match the mortar color rather than going white. Mortar is already part of the visual mix that makes up the brick's overall tone, so it works with the pattern rather than against it.How Many Colors Does an Exterior Need? [30:08]No single right answer, but here are some practical guidelines. Two colors -- body plus one accent. Clean and simple. Works well on a ranch or any home where the...

The Palm Dog Award is held annually at a beachfront location on the last Friday of the Cannes Film Festival. It celebrates canine performances in all films screened at Cannes and is the world's longest running ceremony of its kind. Founded in 2001 by film journalist Toby Rose with a mission to give equal celebration to Canines at Cannes as their human co-stars. The sister ceremony, the FIDOS (For Incredible Dogs on Screen) is held annually in London, since 2007 for canine performances across all UK film releases in any given year.  Former winners include Kodi from Dog on Trial, Messi from Anatomy of a Fall, Brandy from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Smurf from Sightseers and Uggie from The Artist. For more information go to the website or follow on InstragramFor more about Antinol and Naturaw, including A Dog's Life discounts you can use, go to the 'Anna Recommends' page at annawebb.co.ukMusic and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by JaijoCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff Pawtraits

There's a "King Conan" movie very possibly on the way, and something you've always dreamed of – another Godfather movie, but told from Connie Corleone's perspective! That's a surefire hit if I've ever heard of one. I went to see Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia, and have some thoughts about it as an aging film nerd. It's 1986 and the cereal is sugary, the TV knob is warm, and the Saturday morning cartoon wars are officially underway! Shua and Jay travel back to the golden age of animated chaos to decide which network truly ruled the weekend lineup. From Muppet Babies and Real Ghostbusters to Schoolhouse Rock and Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling, the guys relive the cartoons, commercials, trivia, and unforgettable memories that made Saturday mornings legendary. Plus, Jay quizzes Shua on Schoolhouse Rock in a battle for educational cartoon supremacy.   News Atari has officially acquired the legendary RPG franchise Wizardry, bringing the classic BASIC-coded dungeon crawler under the company's retro gaming banner.   Nintendo surprised fans with a special "Star Fox Direct" presentation that officially confirmed a brand-new Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch 2.   Top Gun fans can celebrate the film's 40th anniversary with collectible Maverick and Goose helmet popcorn buckets available during opening showings.   Star Tours: Last Launch is an impressive fan-made film packed with love for Disney Parks and Star Wars, including appearances from several franchise legends. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay checked out Daredevil: Born Again along with Punisher: One More Kill on Disney+, and found the new season to be a major improvement with smoother storytelling and stronger pacing. The gritty tone was intense and the Punisher special delivered exactly the kind of brutal action fans expect from Frank Castle. Shua sampled the new Firecracker Pop Oreos inspired by the classic red, white, and blue Rocket Pops, and somehow they actually taste remarkably close to the frozen treat. They're sugary, nostalgic, and absolutely worth trying at least once for the novelty alone.     Sci-Fi Saturdays -  This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay focuses on the 2020 time-loop comedy Palm Springs. He explains how the movie unexpectedly became the perfect film for audiences during the COVID lockdown era, with its themes of repetition, isolation, and emotional burnout resonating in a strangely timely way. He also praises the clever writing from Andy Siara and the direction from Max Barbakow for taking the familiar time-loop concept and making it feel fresh, funny, and surprisingly philosophical. The film balances absurd comedy with meaningful emotional depth, elevating it beyond a typical indie comedy. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. This week he's added some new locations from Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.   Enjoy Saturdays in 1986!  This week, Shua and Jay climb aboard the nostalgia rocket and head straight back to the glorious cartoon battleground of 1986 Saturday mornings. We explore the origins of Saturday morning cartoons from the earliest days of Crusader Rabbit all the way through the animation boom created by Hanna-Barbera and the toy-driven explosion of the 1980s.   Then it's time to choose a channel as we break down the legendary 1986 lineups from ABC, CBS, and NBC featuring classics like The Real Ghostbusters, Muppet Babies, The Smurfs, Pound Puppies, Kidd Video, and more. Along the way they relive the cereal-fueled excitement of planning your morning around the TV schedule, revisit the magic of Schoolhouse Rock, and test cartoon knowledge with a hilarious trivia showdown.   How did you do on the SHR quiz? What cereal goes well with Kissyfur? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "Unpack your adjectives" will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. A fascinating and somewhat unsettling observation from JACC: Asia: nearly 1 in 4 STEMI patients in New Delhi had no traditional risk factors—no hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, or smoking. Yet outcomes tell a different story. Despite fewer signs of heart failure at presentation, these patients had worse left ventricular dysfunction and identical in-hospital and 1-year mortality compared with those with standard risk factors. This "SMuRF-less paradox" challenges our conventional risk models. It reminds us that absence of risk factors is not absence of risk. We may need to think beyond the usual suspects—toward genetics, inflammation, lipoprotein(a), and healthcare access delays—to truly understand and prevent cardiovascular disease. A humbling lesson: treat aggressively, think broadly, and never be reassured by a "clean" risk profile.

Fighter Pilot Survival: Kegan Gill's Battle Beyond the Battlefield In this extraordinary episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with retired U.S. Navy Fighter Pilot Kegan Gill, whose story is nothing short of miraculous. Kegan survived a catastrophic ejection from his aircraft during a training mission over the Atlantic Ocean, where he ejected directly into the sound barrier. The injuries he sustained in that moment were severe enough to kill most people – his limbs torn apart and a traumatic brain injury among them. But Kegan's ordeal was only beginning. Plunged into the icy waters of the Atlantic with his parachute still attached, his wetsuit torn, and his arms unable to move, Kegan was forced to endure a two-hour battle with hypothermia as rescue teams raced to find him. Miraculously, his hypothermic state prevented fatal blood loss. Following this harrowing experience, Kegan faced months of grueling recovery, eventually achieving a perfect Physical Fitness Test score and returning to flight duty. However, Kegan's journey didn't end with physical recovery. He began experiencing severe psychotic episodes due to his brain injury, leading to a stint in a VA Mental Health Facility. Pharmaceutical treatments only worsened his symptoms, and he endured dehumanizing treatment from caregivers who misunderstood his unique needs. Now, Kegan is finding renewed hope through alternative treatments for brain health. Through the Warrior Angels Foundation, he has discovered the power of nutraceutical and hormonal interventions, offering a glimmer of healing. Beyond his personal health battles, Kegan is a dedicated father and husband, working tirelessly to support his young family. Join us as Kegan opens up about his incredible journey of survival, resilience, and healing. His story is as inspiring as it is shocking – a testament to human strength and the will to overcome even the darkest of circumstances. Tune in to hear a story of grit, determination, and the relentless pursuit of healing against all odds.  In This Episode You Will Hear: • When I was about 10 years old, my family had a friend that had a Cessna, and he took me up on this lawnmower with wings, and we went buzzing around, and it felt like a freakin' rocket ship. I absolutely loved being above the earth, and I felt so free. (6:36) • In May of 2012, I graduated as a winged aviator, and I got those wings pinned on my chest. (23:40) • [Marcus] It's an absolute transition into a different human being the minute those wings touch your chest. (24:02) • [In flight school] you showed up there, and you had your wings, and you thought you made it. They made it very clear you have not made anything yet. (26:40) • It just so happened on this day there was a 16 foot, 3,500 pound Great White Shark named Mary Lee directly under my airspace, and my buddy pointed out,  “Hey man, Today would be a terrible day to eject,” and an hour after having that conversation, I found myself out on what turned into a pretty freaking wild experience. (36:23) • [Melanie] Q: Is it common to eject?”  [Keegan] A: It happens more than you hear about in the news. We lose a few naval fighter jets every year to mishaps. (37:16) • When you show up at flight school, they say “Look to your left and look to your right. One of you is gonna have a serious mishap or be dead choosing this job. Are you sure you wanna be here?” (37:49) • You think you're invincible, and you don't really think anything of it. (38:04) • Keegan tells the detailed story of that fateful day. (Starting at 41:21) • When I punched out, I got the initial blast from the ejection seat, and then immediately impacted the sound barrier with my body. At that speed, the human body is not aerodynamic. (50:58) • The aircraft impacted the water so fast, it just vaporized. (52:50) • They ended up wheeling me in, and treated me for severe hyperthermia. They took my core body temperature. I was at 87 degrees. [Marcus] “That should've killed you.” (60:13) • One of the more senior guys takes me into his office and he goes: “Congratulations, Lieutenant Gill. If you can figure out how to get your body working again, we'll get you back in a Super Hornet. (68:14) • My brain was just not working the way it was supposed to from TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). (75:04) • I had a deep sense of betrayal from all that thought I had served. To see the treatment, it seemed like everything I was fighting for was a joke. (89:53) • I've had a number of psychedelic-assisted therapies that have been really helpful. (95:54) • Ibogaine has been studied pretty thoroughly at this point. It's showing that it triggers neuro-regeneration.
