This week we present another installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of a band from the early 2000s that straddles the lines of alternative, rock, metal, and prog simultaneously: DREDG! Equal parts Incubus-Tool-Muse-Pink Floyd-U2, yet this band was never able to break into the mainstream. We think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This band is similar to another favorite that we featured on an early Grave Mistake episode; OURS. Kevin had a chance to catch OURS & DREDG on tour together back in 2005, although he screwed the time up and completely missed OURS; but that's beside the point. Robert is completely unaware of them. Will he agree with Kevin's lobbying for “Shoulda Been Huge” status??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Dredg – “Symbol Song” from Leitmotif (2001)Dredg – “Same Ol' Road” from El Cielo (2002)Dredg – “The Tanbark Is Hot Lava” from Catch Without Arms (2005)Dredg – “Ode To The Sun” from Live At The Fillmore (2006)Dredg - “I Don't Know” from The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (2009)Dredg – “Upon Returning” from Chuckles And Mr. Sqeezy (2011)Dredg – “The Canyon Behind Her” from El Cielo (2002)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Ben Flanagan joins us this week, and we love to see it. Ben is the vocalist and bassist of the heavy hitting trio Black Map. The band is comprised of himself along with guitarist Mark Engles (of Dredg fame) and drummer Chris Robyn (of the band Far). As far as "super groups" go, these guys certainly fit the bill. A veteran of the rock n' roll lifestyle, Ben cut his teeth in the bands IO, The Trophy Fire, and The Actual prior to starting Black Map. He even spent some time as the "5th member" of Dredg for a spell, touring with them all over the world. Black Map have released two full length albums, some split records, and a few digital singles, as well as some awesome cover songs, most recently a mashup of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face" and U2's "Exit" (with a touch of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" thrown in for good measure). Beyond his work as a musician, he has worked for many years as a member of the booking team at San Francisco's famed club Bottom of the Hill, which we talk about in this episode. He also provides a few bands that he feels should be on everyone's radar, and his 5 desert island albums. Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in autumn 2002, and Deftones producer Terry Date was at the helm for their 2005 effort Catch Without Arms. They released the concert album Live at the Fillmore a year later, followed by Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion in 2009.* JC got a chance to sit down with Drew Roulette to talk about those early days, their time away from the spotlight, and how the pandemic impacted their new music. All of that and much more on this episode of theFIVE10 Podcast! *bio taken from Allmusic.com

(recorded on Friday March 3rd, 2017) Chapter 96: "In Droves" ...as read by Mark Engles of Black Map/Dredg Mark Engles is one of my favorite guitarists. After Dredg kicked multiple dents in my head in the mid-2000s this guy starts another one of my favorite bands called Black Map with Ben Flanagan of The Trophy Fire and Chris Robyn of Far. FAR! Remember them? Mark talks about how he decided to NOT be a drummer as a kid, we touch a little bit about Dredg but this chapters' main focus is Black Map. Black Map has a new album called "In Droves" being released on March 10th. Thank you Bill Meis and EntertainmentOne for the connection. Mark let me play SO much music on here!!! Chris Robyn is the drummer for rock super group, Black Map. He was also a former member of Sacramento cult alt-rock legends, FAR. FAR went largely unrecognized during the 90's cutting their teeth with bands like Deftones and Incubus. It was only after their break up in 1999, that they gained notoriety in many underground circles. Apart from playing briefly in projects over the years like Milwaukee, Crosses, and the FAR reunion in 2010, Chris had been mostly absent from playing music. Instead, he had decided to go to law school and practice law in California. It wasn't until Ben Flanagan (Trophy Fire) and Mark Engles (dredg) came calling in 2013 that he was back off to the races in Black Map touring across the U.S. and Europe gaining followers of their former stables, and new ones alike. They are currently recording a follow up to their critically received album, "...And We Explode", due out in 2017!
