When Black Orchid Empire have new music, we all pay attention. They create huge, memorable rock music that combines heavy-hitting savagery with intense melodic beauty. Their technical, fearlessly complex grooves and gigantic sing-along choruses have already earned them a widespread fanbase. It's not just on record though either, as they are a ferociously tight live band. Having toured Europe and the UK extensively, supporting Skunk Anansie, HED P.E, INME, Cellar Darling and Black Map as well as festival slots at Download, Standon Calling, Tech Fest, Teddy Rocks and Planet Rockstock. Following on from album releases with Long Branch Records and Season of Mist, the band have now sign with a brand-new label and have released the song ‘Angelfire', the first single from their upcoming album. The single release also comes ahead of their highly anticipated Spring UK tour. We spoke to guitarist and vocalist, Paul about the new single. Not just delving into the creative process but finding out more about the band's long-term plans and why it is so exciting. We also talk about how Black Orchid Empire have got to this point in time, the work that goes into creating something, being so ‘hands on', and so much more. Ben Flanagan joins us this week, and we love to see it. Ben is the vocalist and bassist of the heavy hitting trio Black Map. The band is comprised of himself along with guitarist Mark Engles (of Dredg fame) and drummer Chris Robyn (of the band Far). As far as "super groups" go, these guys certainly fit the bill. A veteran of the rock n' roll lifestyle, Ben cut his teeth in the bands IO, The Trophy Fire, and The Actual prior to starting Black Map. He even spent some time as the "5th member" of Dredg for a spell, touring with them all over the world. Black Map have released two full length albums, some split records, and a few digital singles, as well as some awesome cover songs, most recently a mashup of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face" and U2's "Exit" (with a touch of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" thrown in for good measure). Beyond his work as a musician, he has worked for many years as a member of the booking team at San Francisco's famed club Bottom of the Hill, which we talk about in this episode. He also provides a few bands that he feels should be on everyone's radar, and his 5 desert island albums. Matt Caughthran is the incomparable singer of L.A. punk rock band The Bronx and it's Latin flavored sister band, Mariachi El Bronx. Whether its tearing up basement punk clubs with Bronx or opening bigger arena shows with El Bronx - Matt and company have found a way to balance both reaching many people from a variety of backgrounds. We talk about striking that balance, as well as his early days growing up in East L.A., lineup changes, and some details about new the Bronx record due this fall! Ben Flanagan is the singer and bassist for Black Map. The bay area band has been busy since releasing their second album, "In Droves" last year. They've hit the road in the U.S. more than ever before touring with the likes of Chevelle and Bush. I chat with Ben about his days in early bands like The Actual and Trophy Fire, 90's comedy, Scott Weiland, signing with EOne Music, and future plans with Black Map.

Chris Robyn is the drummer for rock super group, Black Map. He was also a former member of Sacramento cult alt-rock legends, FAR. FAR went largely unrecognized during the 90's cutting their teeth with bands like Deftones and Incubus. It was only after their break up in 1999, that they gained notoriety in many underground circles. Apart from playing briefly in projects over the years like Milwaukee, Crosses, and the FAR reunion in 2010, Chris had been mostly absent from playing music. Instead, he had decided to go to law school and practice law in California. It wasn't until Ben Flanagan (Trophy Fire) and Mark Engles (dredg) came calling in 2013 that he was back off to the races in Black Map touring across the U.S. and Europe gaining followers of their former stables, and new ones alike. They are currently recording a follow up to their critically received album, "...And We Explode", due out in 2017!

Black Map. A clean slate, an open-ended set of directions with no boundaries or guidelines tying you to any predetermined path? Or a bleak, morbid symbol of nothing-good-to-come, no matter which journey you choose? Maybe a little bit of both? Dystopian themes and dark lyrical images sit atop bombastic, surging rhythms and melodies–suggesting all paths […]
