Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 12, 2025 is: leitmotif • LYTE-moh-teef • noun A leitmotif is a dominant recurring theme—something (such as a melody, an idea, or a phrase) repeated many times throughout a book, story, opera, etc. // The overcoming of obstacles and a love of theater are the two leitmotifs of her autobiography. See the entry > Examples: “[F. Scott] Fitzgerald considered his year and a half spent on The Vegetable a complete waste, but I disagree, for he followed it with a new novel written with all the economy and tight structure of a successful play—The Great Gatsby. Both The Vegetable and Gatsby shared the theme of the American Dream (first as a spoof for a comedy, finally as the leitmotif of a lyric novel). I don't think there has ever been a more elusive, mysterious, intriguing character than Gatsby. He's pure fiction—and pure Fitzgerald: the hopeful, romantic outsider looking in.” — Charles Scribner III, Scribners: Five Generations in Publishing, 2023 Did you know? The English word leitmotif (or leitmotiv, as it is also spelled) comes from the German Leitmotiv, meaning “leading motive,” and is formed from the verb leiten (“to lead”) and the noun Motiv (“motive”). In its original sense, the word applies to opera music; it was first used by writers interpreting the works of composer Richard Wagner, who was famous for associating a melody with a character or important dramatic element. Leitmotif is still commonly used with reference to music and musical drama but it is now also used more broadly to refer to any recurring theme in the arts—“The Imperial March,” heard in the Star Wars film franchise whenever Darth Vader appears on screen, for example—or in everyday life.

Equal parts Incubus-Tool-Muse-Pink Floyd-U2, yet this band was never able to break into the mainstream. We think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This band is similar to another favorite that we featured on an early Grave Mistake episode; OURS. Kevin had a chance to catch OURS & DREDG on tour together back in 2005, although he screwed the time up and completely missed OURS; but that's beside the point. Robert is completely unaware of them. Will he agree with Kevin's lobbying for “Shoulda Been Huge” status??? Film music began as a solution to a problem. Early film projectors were really loud, therefore something was needed to cover up all the noise.  In addition, silent movies apparently seemed a bit awkward without any musical accompaniment.   Enter, usually, a pianist, who would improvise musical accompaniments to the events on the screen. None other than Dmitri Shostakovich got his first job as a cinema pianist, honing his improvisatory skills, and sometimes receiving cat calls and boos for his fantasy filled musings that tended to stray away from the action on the screen. Music in the silent film era had to help the audience in pointing out important moments to the audience,  enhancing the emotional effects of the story, and most importantly, it had to give a certain musical line to every character, giving to them the emotional depth that the audience couldn't get since they weren't going to hear their voice.  To do this, early film composers turned to the idea of the Leitmotif, an idea developed by the opera composer Richard Wagner. This idea would take hold even once "talkies" took over the screen, with composers such as Max Steiner, Charlie Chaplin, and others setting the stage for a century of brilliant music, by composers like Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Dmitri Shostakovich, Rachel Portman, Hans Zimmer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Christopher Willis, and dozens and dozens more. Today on the show we'll talk about this development of film music, and also hear some of the greatest and most recognizable film music ever written. We'll also talk about why film music is sometimes looked down upon in the classical music world, and how we might begin to change that perception. Join us!

In this episode, we talk very frankly about desire, fantasies and masturbation. Above all we discuss the differences between men and women and how to navigate the dangerous waters that separate us. We discuss our early experiences around ‘solo sex,' finding our parent's Joy of Sex books and, later in life, discovering pornography and how that impacted our relationships with ourselves and our lovers. The strapline or Leitmotif that emerges from this discussion is once again the importance of communication between partners. Being able to talk about masturbatory experiences as well as observing each other as we masturbate can play an important role in keeping interest alive. The reason that we tend to come back to mutual openness and communication so often is that for many older people who have perhaps been together for many years, communication of desire is one of the things that gets lost in the difficulties of just getting through the practicalities of every day life. In particular, the years of childcare, menopause and male midlife crisis mean it is very easy to lose sight of your own desires and to search for their fulfilment in places which can be dangerous for any relationship. Different for men and women, our experiences of how we discover what makes us aroused help to inform our relationships with future partners and engaging with each other in both talking about it as well as acting out our fantasies help to keep those relationships fresh. Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in autumn 2002, and Deftones producer Terry Date was at the helm for their 2005 effort Catch Without Arms. They released the concert album Live at the Fillmore a year later, followed by Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion in 2009.* JC got a chance to sit down with Drew Roulette to talk about those early days, their time away from the spotlight, and how the pandemic impacted their new music. Today, we are covering the music and sound of minutes 26-30 of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi! We get a final look of Luke, Leia sits by the window while exiting hyperspace, Leia slaps and demotes Poe, Admiral Ackbar calls a proximity alert, Snoke's ship tracks the Raddus, Poe gets permission to blow stuff up, Kylo Ren looks angry but conflicted, and the hangar blows up. Guest: Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute. Theme-spotting: Force theme, Kylo Ren theme, Leia theme, Resistance March, Tension.  Soundtrack: "4. Water bottle rattle symbolism. Xanthe feels some "Pavane for a Dead Princess" (Maurice Ravel) vibes. What hyperspace sounds like and how we would recreate hyperspace at home. Rundown of sound design highlights. Futuristic beeps and blips. So underrated yet so precise.  How 90's pop divas unknowingly trained our ears to recognize emphatic key changes. The sputtering and corkscrewing sounds of Kylo's ship. An interesting happens in Kylo's theme... Our lay breakdown of the explosion sound moment.  How sound design sparks curiosity. Incongruity and unexpected sound design choices subconsciously challenge our assumptions about the physical space of a given world. (ex. The sound BB-8 makes when bouncing around). Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 9, 2020 is: leitmotif • LYTE-moh-teef • noun 1 : a melodic phrase or figure that accompanies the reappearance of an idea, person, or situation in a music drama 2 : a dominant recurring theme Examples: The overcoming of obstacles and a love of theater are the two leitmotifs of her autobiography. "The panther has been Cartier's leitmotif for more than a century. The first time the Paris-based jewelry company … alluded to the graceful jungle cat was in 1914, when the house created a women's platinum wristwatch with a case that resembled an abstracted version of the elegant animal's spots, in onyx and diamonds." — Nancy Hass, The New York Times, 26 Aug. 2020 Did you know? The English word leitmotif (or leitmotiv, as it is also spelled) comes from the German Leitmotiv, meaning "leading motive," and is formed from the verb leiten ("to lead") and the noun Motiv ("motive"). In its original sense, the word applies to opera music; it was first used by writers interpreting the works of composer Richard Wagner, who was famous for associating a melody with a character or important dramatic element. Leitmotif is still commonly used with reference to music and musical drama but it is now also used more broadly to refer to any recurring theme in the arts or in everyday life.

So, it would appear that this selector likes a certain set of sounds, rhythms, and time signatures in the 'records' that makes up the sum of a particular ' collection'. These similarities often resonate with a season or spell, such as the fall making way for winter, and during these times it's quite possible to find oneself shifting between hopeless romantic and melancholy optimist. Brown crumpled leaves and crisp clean air pair well with waltzes and suites, breaks and bonus beats like the ones you may hear here by international acts Koop & Cecelia Stalin, Kyoto Jazz Massive & Nicola Conte, or perhaps PPP,Moonchild, The Roots and Atlanta's Dangerfeel Newbies plus Justin C. Gilbert. There are also some Acid Jazzy Soulful gems in the form of Laurnea(produced by Omar from the UK), and turntablism from Jazzy Jeff appearing with Nuyorican Soul. The first Holidaze mix was recorded five years ago and while the apparent leitmotif in this case are the recurring artists in the episodes, the not so obvious one is the warm fuzzy feeling which invokes warm beverages, fireplaces and closeness with loved ones. With that, Namaste and Uangaze...enjoy!

In this thesis we study the low-energy effective dynamics emerging from a class of F-theory compactifications in four and six dimensions. We also investigate six-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories with self-dual tensors, motivated by the problem of describing the long-wavelength regime of a stack of M5-branes in M-theory. These setups share interesting common features. They both constitute examples of intrinsically non-perturbative physics. On the one hand, in the context of F-theory the non-perturbative character is encoded in the geometric formulation of this class of string vacua, which allows the complexified string coupling to vary in space. On the other hand, the dynamics of a stack of multiple M5-branes flows in the infrared to a novel kind of superconformal field theories in six dimensions - commonly referred to as (2,0) theories - that are expected to possess no perturbative weakly coupled regime and have resisted a complete understanding so far. In particular, no Lagrangian description is known for these models. The strategy we employ to address these two problems is also analogous. A recurring Leitmotif of our work is a transdimensional treatment of the system under examination: in order to extract information about dynamics in $d$ dimensions we consider a (d-1)-dimensional setup. As far as F-theory compactifications are concerned, this is a consequence of the duality between M-theory and F-theory, which constitutes our main tool in the derivation of the effective action of F-theory compactifications. We apply it to six-dimensional F-theory vacua, obtained by taking the internal space to be an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold, but we also employ it to explore a novel kind of F-theory constructions in four dimensions based on manifolds with Spin(7) holonomy. With reference to six-dimensional (2,0) theories, the transdimensional character of our approach relies in the idea of studying these theories in five dimensions. Indeed, we propose a Lagrangian that is formulated in five dimensions but has the potential to capture the six-dimensional interactions of (2,0) theories. This investigation leads us to explore in closer detail the relation between physics in five and in six dimensions. One of the outcomes of our exploration is a general result for one-loop corrections to Chern-Simons couplings in five dimensions.
