Floods are the most destructive natural disaster and, thanks to a heating climate, the damages caused by floods are expected to worsen significantly. Flood mitigation of the past, such as levies and dams, has proved inadequate and often counterproductive by misallocating precious resources. Tim Palmer argues that it's time to start relocating our built environment out of the places with a high likelihood of flooding. Send us a Text Message.Have you ever wondered how the historical floods of the past can shape our future defenses against natural disasters? In this latest episode, I chat with Tim Palmer, an award-winning author and photographer. Tim shares his profound insights on rivers, conservation, and the urgent need to rethink our approach to flood management.Tim recounts his formative years growing up in Pennsylvania and the life-changing experience of surviving the Hurricane Agnes flood of 1972. He discusses his latest book, Seek Higher Ground: The Natural Solution to Our Urgent Flooding Crisis, and why America needs to pay attention to the escalating dangers posed by climate change. We tackle the tough questions about the economic and logistical challenges of managing flood-prone areas and what are the real costs of repeatedly repairing flood damage versus investing in levee upgrades or relocating communities. Tim shares eye-opening statistics on federal spending inefficiencies and explores the fairness of using taxpayer dollars to rebuild in high-risk areas. With examples like Sacramento's costly levee projects, we debate the complexities of flood protection funding and the broader implications of continued development in vulnerable zones. Our conversation also highlights the overlooked plight of climate refugees, using compelling stories from events like the Thomas Fire in Ojai, California, to stress the urgent need for streamlined federal disaster relief. Drawing inspiration from pioneers like Ian McHarg and insights from experts such as Orrin H. Pilkey, Tim emphasizes the necessity of forward-thinking solutions to manage climate-induced displacements. Tim's extraordinary work in floodplain management and his passion for storytelling bring a rich, informative layer to our discussion, making this episode a must-listen for anyone concerned about the future of our environment and communities.Tim PalmerSeek Higher Ground: The Natural Solution To Our Urgent Flooding Crisis, Tim PalmerThe Flag, The Cross, and the Station Wagon, Bill McKibbenSupport the Show. The Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

The Hurricane Agnes Flood of 1972 was the costliest in American history up to that time, with damage sweeping across eight states, and Tim Palmer, then a land-use planner in central Pennsylvania, lived at the storm's epicenter. During the first day of torrential rain, he had no idea that the impending flood would inundate whole cities by surprise, overtop dams no one ever expected to fill, sever levees, and transform the place where he, and many others, had been living so peaceably into a war zone. In SEEK HIGHER GROUND: The Natural Solution to Our Urgent Flooding Crisis, Palmer, now an award-winning environmental writer and photographer, goes beyond his personal experience as a flood victim to focus on the larger—and critical—issue of flooding in America. Pairing historical perspectives with in-depth journalism, Palmer explores where we've gone wrong in our approach to managing flooding and what we must do differently as global warming continues to spur floods of greater intensity, duration, and frequency.

“Tell Me This” opens with a winding Johnny Thunders-esque guitar solo, a Stones-like fury, and a lyrical nod to the Smiths. Vocalist and guitarist Peter Argyropoulos shares, “Tell Me This” was inspired by the intro guitar riff. It was a practice riff; something I came up with while doing guitar exercises. I fleshed it out with the chorus and brought it to the band. But it felt a little plain and we shelved it. Fast forward a few months. Marc Slutsky had joined the band and brought with him a wonderful energy, not to mention a thumping backbeat. I thought his playing could be a good match for Tell Me This. So, I brought it back to the band during our last rehearsal or two before recording the album. Marc dug in and did exactly as I has hoped, his spirit and chill intensity immediately lifted the song over the top. After reviewing rehearsal recordings that night, he called me and said he thought the song could be a single. Turns out he was right! First one from the album”. In addition to Argyropoulos the rest of the band's line-up includes keyboardist Brina Kabler, guitarist Kevin Haaland (Skillet,) bassist Adam Kury (Candlebox,) and drummer Marc Slutsky who has toured and/or recorded with Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Peter Murphy, and Todd Rundgren. Runaway Emotions is Sons of Silver's first full-length following a pair of EPs in 2020's Doomsday Noises (which sported three spots on the Billboard Active Rock chart) and 2022's Ordinary Sex Appeal, to be released through their own 4L Entertainment and distributed by Universal Music's Group's Bungalow label. In all, the band's songs have collectively accumulated more than nine million views and streams. Self-produced by the group, the record was mixed by renowned producer/engineer Tim Palmer, whose credits include Robert Plant, David Bowie, and U2 to name a few. “These guys epitomize the essence of classic alternative rock,” says Palmer about working with the band. “Their music is fueled with both power and raw emotion, with genuinely profound lyrics. Their album is a treasure trove of well-crafted, memorable songs and I really enjoyed collaborating with them.” “For me, music is about capturing a spirit, an energy, a feeling,” says bassist Adam Kury. “The record is a warning, if we continue down this path, we're doomed,” adds Argyropoulos. “But if you look at it from a different angle, we share more than we realize, even if we tend to focus on what separates us. At its best, rock ‘n' roll brings us together, and celebrates what we have in common”.

We also talk about his Pennsylvania buck he got down in the early season, why he was successful in this hunt and how previous years intel helped him get set up in the right area to have a shot at this Buck. Once he punched his Pennsylvania Buck tag he decided to take a "Quick" trip out to Ohio to hit some public land with one of his buddies, which lead to him being able to punch his Ohio Buck tag in less then 24 hours! Can we start there?6.52 Is it true to say that our economic systems are experiencing more uncertainty and non-linear occurrences recently?9.19 Can we talk about some of the most fundamental scientific concepts of uncertainty that you explore in the book, and how we might take some of that thinking to the challenges that we might be facing in running organisations? 12.46 If we recognise that there will always be uncertainties, but also imagine a world in the future where there might be unlimited computing power where we have the singularity and an abundance of senses, does this increase in knowledge take us closer to a world with no uncertainty? 18.44 Can you help us understand Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle?21.48 If you could go back in time to the 2008 financial crisis, could you use some of what you know and have learnt about uncertainty to moderate that somehow? 33.26 How widespread has the adoption of ensemble methods been?35.13 Can we talk about ensemble methods, specifically focussing in on climate change? How has your work helped us to develop our current understanding of the world's greatest challenge?43.24 How do you see the science of uncertainty developing over the next decade?47.34 Where do you see uncertainty sitting in the educational curriculum because currently it feels like it hasn't been adopted into secondary education or across other fields?51.04 Can you bring to life what a typical day looks like to you? Social:Instagram           @evolvingleaderLinkedIn             The Evolving Leader PodcastTwitter               @Evolving_LeaderYouTube.           EvolvingLeader The Evolving Leader is researched, written and presented by Jean Gomes and Scott Allender with production by Phil Kerby. Equal parts Incubus-Tool-Muse-Pink Floyd-U2, yet this band was never able to break into the mainstream. We think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This band is similar to another favorite that we featured on an early Grave Mistake episode; OURS. Kevin had a chance to catch OURS & DREDG on tour together back in 2005, although he screwed the time up and completely missed OURS; but that's beside the point. Robert is completely unaware of them. Will he agree with Kevin's lobbying for “Shoulda Been Huge” status??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Dredg – “Symbol Song” from Leitmotif (2001)Dredg – “Same Ol' Road” from El Cielo (2002)Dredg – “The Tanbark Is Hot Lava” from Catch Without Arms (2005)Dredg – “Ode To The Sun” from Live At The Fillmore (2006)Dredg - “I Don't Know” from The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (2009)Dredg – “Upon Returning” from Chuckles And Mr. Sqeezy (2011)Dredg – “The Canyon Behind Her” from El Cielo (2002)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Tim Palmer graduated from Oxford with a PhD in mathematical physics, working on general relativity, and got a postdoc to work with Stephen Hawking. He turned it down and moved into the field of meteorology, and then moved on to Climate Change studies, where he pioneered the development of what is called ‘ensemble forecasting' to predict both long term climate change, as well as short term weather predictions. This technique has now become a standard in the field, and is necessary to properly account for possible chaotic behavior in atmospheric systems. Even simple classical systems can be chaotic—implying that even minute changes in initial conditions can sometimes produce dramatic variations in their later evolution. The canonical hyperbolic example is a butterfly flapping its wings in Kansas might later cause a violent storm on the Eastern Seaboard. On first glance, it may seem that this would imply all predictivity must go out the window, but over the past 40 years techniques have been developed for dealing with the so-called ‘fractal' distributions that often result from chaotic dynamics, and as a result, it has become possible to constrain the range of possible long term outcomes of chaotic behavior. Tim Palmer has recently written a new book, entitled The Primacy of Doubt, which provides a wonderful discussion about the importance of accounting for doubt and uncertainty in a wide variety of systems, from weather to medicine, and even includes discussions of there possible implications of his ideas for the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and gravity. While I am more skeptical of his nevertheless intriguing latter arguments, Tim and I had a fascinating and informative discussion about his own experiences as a scientist, and the importance of explicitly incorporating a range of initial conditions when exploring weather and climate predictions. For many people, uncertainty is something to be avoided, but in physics, uncertainty is an inherent part of our understanding of the world, and it must be faced head-on. Being able to make quantitative predictions with likelihoods that have meaning requires it, and science is the only area of human inquiry where we can state with great quantitative accuracy what the likelihood is that a given prediction will be correct. This is a triumph of the scientific process and deserves to be better understood. In this regard, there are fewer better guides than Tim Palmer, and it was a delight to spend time with him on this podcast, which will enlighten and entertain. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. On this weekend episode I'm joined by Tim Palmer from Pennsylvania, Austin Stone from Missouri/Kansas, and last but not least Drew from Central Wisconsin. This is the last week of October and bucks are starting to show pre rut activity and are starting to make scrapes and rubs a lot more frequently. Lots of bucks are starting to daylight so this week will probably be the calm before the storm but still great odds of getting a big mature buck on his feet during this last week of October leading into Halloween. Acorns are still hot through most of the country and a lot of the agricultural fields have been harvested so that's also a primary food source for most of the Midwest. With the drought we're having a water source is a great place to focus on this week if there isn't an abundance of water in the area. The rut is just around the corner and the next cold front that rolls through should get things kicking and bucks should start cruising a lot more as the first few doe's of the season start coming into their breeding cycle!! Weather isn't the best this week but don't let it discourage you because bucks will be moving this week even if the weather is undesirable. Thanks so much for listening to another episode, we truly appreciate all the support and good luck to everyone chasing Whitetails this week!!

In his acclaimed latest book, The Primacy of Doubt: From Quantum Physics to Climate Change, How the Science of Uncertainty Can Help Us Understand Our Chaotic World, Professor Timothy Palmer argues that embracing the mathematics of uncertainty is vital to understanding ourselves and the universe around us. Whether we want to predict climate change or market crashes, understand how the brain is able to outpace supercomputers or find a theory that links quantum and cosmological physics, Palmer shows how his vision of mathematical uncertainty provides new insights into some of the deepest problems in science. The result is a revolution—one that shows that power begins by embracing what we don't know. He is a mathematical physicist who has spent most of his career working on the dynamics and predictability of weather and climate. He pioneered the development of probabilistic ensemble forecasting techniques for weather and climate prediction, techniques that are now standard in weather and climate forecasting around the world. In 2021 Professor Palmer was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Institute of Physics. Professor Palmer was involved in the first five IPCC assessment reports, and was co-chair of the international scientific steering group of the World Climate Research Programme project (CLIVAR) on climate variability and predictability.

Why does your weather app say “There's a 10% chance of rain” instead of “It will be sunny tomorrow”? In large part this is due to the insight of Tim Palmer, who made uncertainty essential to the study of weather and climate. Now he wants to apply it to how we study everything else. In The Primacy of Doubt, Palmer argues that embracing the mathematics of uncertainty is vital to understanding ourselves and the universe around us. Whether we want to predict climate change or market crashes, understand how the brain is able to outpace supercomputers, or find a theory that links quantum and cosmological physics, Palmer shows how his vision of mathematical uncertainty provides new insights into some of the deepest problems in science. The result is a revolution—one that shows that power begins by embracing what we don't know. Shermer and Palmer discuss: doubt and skepticism • when doubt slides into denial • uncertainty as a measurement problem vs. inherent in natural systems • contingency and necessity, randomness and law • the butterfly effect • the geometry of chaos • quantum uncertainty • weather forecasting • climate change • pandemics • economic recessions • human decision making and creativity • free will • consciousness, and God. Tim Palmer, FRS (Fellow of the Royal Society), CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) is a Royal Society Research Professor in the department of physics at the University of Oxford. He pioneered the development of operational ensemble weather and climate forecasting, and in 2007, he was formally recognized as having contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Nobel Peace Prize. Palmer is a Commander of the British Empire, a fellow of the Royal Society and the National Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Institute of Physics' Dirac Gold Medal. He lives near Oxford, UK.

Should we see nature as a divine source, or will doing so lead to self-annihilation? Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesFrom Greece's Gaia to the Hindu Prithvi, many cultures have seen the Earth as a divine being. Christianity and Western culture however removed god from nature deriding such outlooks as 'pagan'. The earth was recast as a resource for humans, to be conquered, settled and tamed. Now it seems the tides may be changing again. Rivers and rainforests are being given legal rights and some philosophers go further arguing that the planets of the solar system should too. Nature it would seem is the new god.Might re-embracing Mother Earth be just what we need to prevent environmental catastrophe and destruction of society? Or is the return to the gods of nature a dangerous step that undermines human goals and values and threatens a return to superstition and fate?Psychedelic philosopher Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes, internationally-renowned climate scientist Tim Palmer, and author-broadcaster-podcaster Melanie Challenger test each other's beliefs about nature and god.
