The Secret of Monkey Island. The Secret of Monkey Island. This weekend, there's a new documentary coming to theaters about the life of Christopher Reeve, the actor who played Superman. It's called Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, and it's about his career, the injury that changed his life, and about what Superman the character means to different people. For this week's episode, we're diving into the Sewers archives to revisit a 2018 conversation on that topic. My guest was Glenn Kiser, whose name you might not recognize but he's had a hand in countless films over the last thirty years — helping to craft movies alongside directors like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Jane Campion, and George Lucas. As a kid, Glenn would obsess over movies and dream of the day he could make his own — never dreaming that his journey could take him from living on an isolated ranch in Texas to working at Skywalker Ranch. We'll have that conversation in just a moment. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. Patrons get access to an exclusive Discord server, stickers and books in the mail, bonus videos, and more. You can join the Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume.And you may also enjoy my other projects — my YouTube videos, weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter. Check out all that at MattBaume.com.Also, I hope you'll check out a new documentary series premiering on CNN on September 22, about TV milestones that shaped American culture. It's called TV on the Edge, and I'm just one of the folks interviewed on the show.

Discover Lafayette's sound engineer, Jason Sikora, has a voice many of you are familiar with, as he's participated in our interviews over the past seven years, ensuring a finely-tuned, professional podcast. Jason Sikora pictured with Butch Roussel during a recording of Discover Lafayette Podcast. But many of you may not know his interesting back story, or how he came to live and work in Lafayette LA. A native of Detroit, Michigan and graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Jason has a rich collection of memories to share and insights into how rock concerts are orchestrated. Jason's dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, but when Jason and his two brothers were young, the family moved to Hartland, Michigan to be able to escape the city life and its accompanying declining socio-economic factors in the 1980s. Describing Hartland as "basically a truck stop," it was much more. Jason graduated from Hartland High School, playing drums in its marching band and eventually serving as the Hartland Eagles' mascot. Sadly, Jason's younger brother, Kris, died when he was 11 years old, from a blood disorder. Kris' life and death had great meaning, however, as researchers were able to study his condition. Jason stated that today, people with Kris' condition would survive. Upon graduation from high school, Jason hightailed it to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute ("MI"), a college that was known as a 'player's school,' meaning that students were taught the skills to make a sustainable career in the music industry. While many young people could qualify to be a guitar tech based upon their self-taught abilities, Jason credited MI for a valuable education and teaching him guitar repair and cable management. " I started playing guitar in 6th grade, so I had six to seven years of experience with signal flow, how to solder microphones back together. I learned a lot in high school with my band, messing with pedals and guitars and amplifiers. I did learn guitar repair, cable management and how to get tone while in college at MI." Andy Brauer hired Jason right after graduation from MI, to work at his shop that specialized in instrument and musical gear rentals. Jason had the good fortune to work with Faith Hill in his very first gig, being hired to work at Skywalker Ranch to assist in recording track sessions. "I got to hang out with the best musicians in the world for a week: Mike Landau, Dean Parks, Paul Bushnell, and Vinnie Calaiuta are monster players!" Jason also got to witness the regular lives of performers such as Faith Hill, her husband, Tim McGraw, and their children, and realized how fortunate he was to be a part of this experience in the ordinary lives of superstars as the album was being cut. Jason then met Michael Lockwood, a guitarist who hired him to be a touring guitar tech for Aimee Mann, performing sound checks and restringing guitars, ensuring that all would go well during concerts. Jason would continue this type of work for several years, working with greats such as Lisa Marie Presley, Britney Spears, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as other acts during what he calls his 'lost years from 2004 to 2006', such as Hanson, Gerard McMahon, Puddle of Mudd, and the recording of "A Mighty Wind," an album accompanying a movie of the same name, featuring Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Jennifer Coolidge and many other staples of comedy culture of the time. "The work ethic is very different when you're on the road. You're not allowed to be sick. The show must go on. If there is a half million dollar guarantee and there are 10,000 people out there, your rig has to work. There was always a doctor out there with water, vitamins, and oxygen. You have to do the show. There's no back-up. No one else would know my rig," says Jason Sikora. Asked if he missed traveling on the road for months as a time as a guitar tech,

Galoob was a small toy company based in San Francisco that developed and sold several toy lines. In the early 90s, they were able to acquire a license to incorporate Star Wars vehicles in one of their most successful lines, MicroMachines. Jim Fong worked his way up to the roll of design director, and oversaw the development of Star Wars MicroMachines and the Action Fleet line. During this discussion Jim shares how he got the job at Galoob, the first time he saw Star Wars (it was early), how he became friends with Ralph McQuarrie, the Easter eggs he was able to hide in the toy line, visiting Skywalker Ranch, how MicroMachines were made, and shares some behind the scenes photos (watch those on YouTube!). Jim also shares his attempt to incorporate bathrooms in Action Fleet vehicles and also shares what might have been if Galoob wasn't bought by Hasbro. All the while, Jason is geeking out! Download and listen this very special episode! Jim would like to add: ”I wish to thank the whole Galoob Team that made it such a great place to work. Without them, it would not have been as special as it was, and I thank the Galco team in Hong Kong for making our vision happen, and putting up with our constant changes. This week the Regular Joes are again joined by Tom Spina of Regal Robot and Tom Spina Designs. Barry and Tom recently traveled to Skywalker Ranch to complete research for Regal Robot's newest limited run offering, a faithful reproduction of the Wampa puppet from The Empire Strikes Back. They also talk about what's it's like to visit the Lucas archive which is pretty much a complex filled with holy grails … including the Holy Grail. All this plus the usual Random Topics. John Roesch is a Hollywood legend you may not know about. He's retired now, but was formerly the Lead Foley Artist at Skywalker Ranch, making the movies we love sound the way they sound. John was on with Chaz and AJ this morning to explain how something simple, like walking through the snow, actually requires a whole different stage and set of props to make it "movie-ready." Growing up in a musical family on the south side of Chicago and playing alongside diverse world-class artists has provided profound musical insight and inspiration which can only be heard in the music of Darryl Jones. After several years gigging around the Chicago music scene, Darryl's international recording and touring career took flight at age 21, with jazz icon Miles Davis. Gigs with Sting, Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Eric Clapton, and others soon followed, and since ‘93 he's been the bassist for the Rolling Stones. When his schedule permits, he performs with other artists, co-leads a couple of bands, serves the legacy of The Chief with the Miles Electric Band; and in 2017 he debuted The Darryl Jones Project.Besides touring and recording, Darryl keeps busy writing music, including composing the score for an award-winning film. He continues his education and was selected to participate in the Sundance Institute's famed Music & Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Ranch in 2017. He teaches classes and conducts clinics around the world, and in 2014 he founded Jones Musical Instruments to craft custom basses and guitars.Visit online at darryljones.comOriginally published in Bass Musician Magazine, Feb 1, 2023Cover Photo, Greg VorobiovVideo Editing, Ryan Hanratty @ Frosted Green ProductionsGo to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is filled with booming jet engines and layered sonic storytelling. Since this publication, it won the award for Best Sound at the Oscars, largely due to the work of Al Nelson, sound designer and supervising sound editor at Skywalker Sound. Hear how he and his team spent time on aircraft carriers to capture the film's iconic sounds. Al Nelson may be known affectionately by some as the “dinosaurs and jets” guy for his work on “Jurassic World” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but his 27-year body of work has touched all genres, including films like “Knives Out,” “Toy Story 2,” “20 Feet From Stardom,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and more. We visit Al Nelson at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch to hear how he makes his art. Nelson discusses the influence of past sound designers on his creative process and the journey he has taken climbing the ranks at Skywalker Sound. He gives insight into the meticulous choices that are made in the edit room, choices that play a critical role in the storytelling process.
This week we present another installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of a band from the early 2000s that straddles the lines of alternative, rock, metal, and prog simultaneously: DREDG! Equal parts Incubus-Tool-Muse-Pink Floyd-U2, yet this band was never able to break into the mainstream. We think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This band is similar to another favorite that we featured on an early Grave Mistake episode; OURS. Kevin had a chance to catch OURS & DREDG on tour together back in 2005, although he screwed the time up and completely missed OURS; but that's beside the point. Robert is completely unaware of them. Will he agree with Kevin's lobbying for “Shoulda Been Huge” status??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Dredg – “Symbol Song” from Leitmotif (2001)Dredg – “Same Ol' Road” from El Cielo (2002)Dredg – “The Tanbark Is Hot Lava” from Catch Without Arms (2005)Dredg – “Ode To The Sun” from Live At The Fillmore (2006)Dredg - “I Don't Know” from The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (2009)Dredg – “Upon Returning” from Chuckles And Mr. Sqeezy (2011)Dredg – “The Canyon Behind Her” from El Cielo (2002)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

In today's episode, we are extremely honored to be joined by Matthew Jacobs, who is a remarkable British director, writer, and actor. In his first ever exclusive Young Indy interview, he reminisces about some of his most memorable behind-the-scenes stories from his experience working as a screenwriter to create six episodes of the show. During this casual and compelling conversation, he discusses the importance of creating three dimensional characters, his incredible collaboration with George Lucas and Debbie Fine at Skywalker Ranch, and how he got the chance to write an unproduced episode titled Stockholm, 1909. Opening music excerpt was composed by Laurence Rosenthal and is titled "Discovery of the Oryx / Sacrifice"
I had the opportunity, through Lucasflm, to talk to the director, Ken Cunnigham and Executive Producer / Writer, David Shayne of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation special. This is a really quick, really fun deep dive into the newest addition of the LEGO universe, and I had an absolute blast talking to them both. (To set the scene for all you audio listeners, yes, I was wearing a tank-top and a Skywalker Ranch butter dish Hawaiian shirt.) Sit back and enjoy the vibes. Thank you so much to Ken and David, as well as Lillian and Rachel at Lucasfilm for coordinating all of this. The special is so much fun and comes out this Friday, August 5, on Disney+. Highly recommended on my end. We have some cool episodes coming up very soon, including one with Senior Editor at Del Rey Books, Tom Hoeler. (And maybe a couple of surprises too.)
