It's another two-for-one on Talkin' Rock! Up first, drumming legend, Mike Portnoy. He and Dream Theater are about to kick off their fall tour, with a stop at the Fox Theater on September 21st. We discussed his love for the Beatles, his relationship with Neil Peart, and the multiple bands he is a part of. He shared his thoughts on the passing of Ozzy and the only time he ever met the legend. Great to interview Mike for the first time after I'd met him a few times before. Next, it's Alice Cooper band bassist, Dennis Dunaway. The Revenge of Alice Cooper is out now. He told me they had a lot of material to choose from. So much they could've recorded many more albums. He shared some Detroit stories, a stage prop that didn't work as planned, and much more. Thanks for listening!
Queensryche were always different from their hard rock & hair metal brethren in the 80s & 90s. Based out of Seattle, Geoff Tate (vocals), Chris DeGarmo (lead guitar), Michael Wilton (lead & rhythm guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) created a more prog rock sound akin to that of Rush or Dream Theater. Tate's soaring vocals against the brilliant guitar work and fiesty rhythm section gave them a sound all their own in a sea of hair, power chords and the occasional power ballad. After coming off 1988's concept album Operation: Mindcrime, the band were confident and ready to take the next step to superstardom. 1990's Empire is generally referred to as their best effort and was their best seller with more than 3 million in the US alone. Thanks to MTV and rock radio, Queensryche music was in the air in 1990 and 1991 (at least until the fall) thanks to big hit like the title track, Best I Can, Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night (Without You) and perhaps the greatest hard rock power ballad of all time, Silent Lucidity. That last song topped the mainstream rock charts and landed in the top ten on Billboard. However, thanks to elements at work in their hometown, the party didn't last. Once Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991, hard rock and hair metal would soon be shown the door by record companies looking to capitalize on the new trend. Though 1994's Promised Land went platinum and had some highlights, it was very out of place in the new flannel-clad culture. Eventually, DeGarmo would leave never to return and turmoil would separate Tate from his band in the 21st Century. However, this album stands as a testament to the bands talent and should be remembered as one of the best of the era. On this episode, that's exactly what we're doing as we throw John Petrucci's two solo records Suspended Animation and Terminal Velocity into the octagon to see which one comes out victorious!

We've got a rare return bout here at Media Made! In this 2009 Music episode, progressive metal legends Dream Theater once again square off with pop sensation Kelly Clarkson. And to give these two acts all the time to shine, Rod & Jess are talking more songs than they would in a standard show! First, they look back at essentially Dream Theater's entire Black Clouds & Silver Linings album (as if they had a choice, given that it only features six songs.) Then, they examine an extra-big portion of Kelly Clarkson's pop renaissance, All I Ever Wanted. Get comfy, because this is going to be a long one! This week, we get songs and stories from the road from the one and only bassist extraordinaire: Mr. Billy Sheehan! We had the opportunity to chat with the icon about his adventurous musical journeys, cats, and deviled ham! Kevin was on the verge of imploding as this conversation completed his goal to have a chat with his holy bass trinity of Geddy, Squire, and Sheehan! Come discover more about some of the bands that Billy's been part of that maybe you aren't as familiar with!Wondering what this show is all about? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and place them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Kevin and Robert were both excited to have the opportunity to chat with the amazingly talented Billy Sheehan. After having a brief encounter with him involving potted meat a few years ago, we wondered if he would remember us. Check out his reaction and some great stories about his more obscure musical endeavors. Ace came up as a live mixer in the '90s at some of L.A.'s legendary clubs, honing his chops on up and coming bands like Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and worked his way up to touring with legends like Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, and Three Doors Down. He told me he'd be happy to do the show but, "I don't want to sit around in some boring studio. Let's go for a drive." So we went for a drive past some of the old L.A. club haunts and talked about everything and nothing. Buckle up.

Cole Millward (Bass) and Phil Rich (Vocals) join me to discuss their latest release, Ozai. Ozai is an EP that reintroduces some of their older work to the world in a re-recorded, mixed, and mastered package. For 40 years, Dream Theater has been one of the biggest progressive rock bands in the world, if not the biggest. The driving force behind their music has been legendary drummer Mike Portnoy, but for more than a decade, he and the band were split. That all changed last year when Mike rejoined the band and they recorded their latest album, “Parasomnia.” He sits down with Tom Power to talk about reuniting with Dream Theater and Rush's influence on the band. If you like this conversation, you'll probably also enjoy Tom's interviews with Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson.
