This week: a new series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. We kick off this series with a band near and dear to both humble hosts. A band whose live show made us both immediate fans back in 2004; the amazing British power trio MUSE! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by MUSE's complex yet accessible modern rock. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Tigercub – “Swoon” from The Perfume Of Decay (2023)Anchor Lane – “Stutter” from Call This A Reality? (2022)VAST – “I Woke Up LA” from Turquoise (2004)The Warning – “More” from Keep Me Fed (2024)Dear Sherlock – “XPTO” from Object Of Ridicule (2023)K Será – “Carry” from Collisions & Near Misses (2013)Battle Circus – “Galacticus” from Battle Circus (2011)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Leitmotif, released in 1999 by Los Gatos, California quartet Dredg, is a concept album exploring themes of identity and time. The album blends elements of alternative rock, progressive rock, nu-metal, and post-hardcore, showcasing the band's skillful versatility, drawing comparison to fellow California bands Tool and Deftones. With its intricate instrumentations and dynamic shifts, Leitmotif takes listeners on an emotive musical journey through its narrative arc. Where the band runs into trouble is in the indulgences, stretching out noisy outros or delayed intros far too long, and ending on an unnecessary jam below their skill set. This week we present another installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of a band from the early 2000s that straddles the lines of alternative, rock, metal, and prog simultaneously: DREDG! Equal parts Incubus-Tool-Muse-Pink Floyd-U2, yet this band was never able to break into the mainstream. We think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This band is similar to another favorite that we featured on an early Grave Mistake episode; OURS. Kevin had a chance to catch OURS & DREDG on tour together back in 2005, although he screwed the time up and completely missed OURS; but that's beside the point. Robert is completely unaware of them. Will he agree with Kevin's lobbying for “Shoulda Been Huge” status??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Dredg – “Symbol Song” from Leitmotif (2001)Dredg – “Same Ol' Road” from El Cielo (2002)Dredg – “The Tanbark Is Hot Lava” from Catch Without Arms (2005)Dredg – “Ode To The Sun” from Live At The Fillmore (2006)Dredg - “I Don't Know” from The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (2009)Dredg – “Upon Returning” from Chuckles And Mr. Sqeezy (2011)Dredg – “The Canyon Behind Her” from El Cielo (2002)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

The Black Dahlia Murder, Killswitch Engage, In Flames. UU. junto a bandas como Deftones, Thrice, Dredg, Funeral for a Friend y Story of the Year.

Ben Flanagan joins us this week, and we love to see it. Ben is the vocalist and bassist of the heavy hitting trio Black Map. The band is comprised of himself along with guitarist Mark Engles (of Dredg fame) and drummer Chris Robyn (of the band Far). As far as "super groups" go, these guys certainly fit the bill. A veteran of the rock n' roll lifestyle, Ben cut his teeth in the bands IO, The Trophy Fire, and The Actual prior to starting Black Map. He even spent some time as the "5th member" of Dredg for a spell, touring with them all over the world. Black Map have released two full length albums, some split records, and a few digital singles, as well as some awesome cover songs, most recently a mashup of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face" and U2's "Exit" (with a touch of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" thrown in for good measure). Beyond his work as a musician, he has worked for many years as a member of the booking team at San Francisco's famed club Bottom of the Hill, which we talk about in this episode. He also provides a few bands that he feels should be on everyone's radar, and his 5 desert island albums. Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in autumn 2002, and Deftones producer Terry Date was at the helm for their 2005 effort Catch Without Arms. They released the concert album Live at the Fillmore a year later, followed by Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion in 2009.* JC got a chance to sit down with Drew Roulette to talk about those early days, their time away from the spotlight, and how the pandemic impacted their new music. All of that and much more on this episode of theFIVE10 Podcast! *bio taken from Allmusic.com

Isles & Glaciers- The Hearts of Lonely People was released March 9, 2010. This album is amazing because it was a collaboration by some of the most talented musicians of the early 2000's emo music scene. It is unique because it is fronted by three of the scene's most iconic frontmen: Craig Owens, Jonny Craig, and Vic Fuentes. Looking back at this album, ten years later, I can honestly say "records aren't made like they used to be." Drew Roulette, artist and bassist of Dredg, created this iconic album cover. How To Fix The Music Business
How Patronage Is Transforming Music Creation Into A Shared Experience With Kickstarter's Hayley Rosenblum

How To Fix The Music Business

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2016 54:25

In this episode, we talk with Hayley Rosenblum, Music Campaign Stategist for Kickstarter, the global crowdfunding community platform. She shares advice about how to create experiences that will engage fans and win their support, lessons she learned in her years working with DIY pioneer Amanda Palmer, and how the post-Napster generation values music differently, but just as importantly as every generation that came before. The concept of recorded music as a commercial product is just a tiny blip in the history of music. For centuries, musicians have relied on the patronage of Kings, Popes, and wealthy benefactors to sustain them while they dedicated their lives to their art. But patronage declined in the mid-19th century. Public support of the arts and the rise of capitalism enabled artists to earn money for the performance and sales of their works. The recorded music industry invested in artists and created a commercial marketplace that more or less worked for artists for decades. Until it didn’t. The internet has democratized distribution. Putting your music online costs almost nothing, really. But it costs real money to create. It is expensive to conceptualize, to write, rehearse, record, release, tour and promote music. Artists have long relied on record labels to fund these endeavors, and accepted inequitable terms as the cost of getting the money. But labels are far more cautious these days about who they sign, what they release and how long they work a record. And the deal terms can be far more obtrusive, where labels want a piece of everything artists earn, not just monies from recorded works. If artists want to create without limits in today’s marketplace, if they want to survive and succeed, they need a more holisitic form of financial support. So patronage is back. But this time, it isn’t Popes and Kings supporting the artists, it’s fans like you and me. Artists we discuss in this podcast: Julien Baker on Bandcamp: https://julienbaker.bandcamp.com/album/sprained-ankle-3 Dredg: http://www.dredg.com/ Hayley's photo work links: https://www.instagram.com/hayleyfiasco/ http://hayleyfiasco.tumblr.com/tagged/fiasco-photos
