Joining us in this episode is Edward Burger, President of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Dr. Burger joined us for a podcast, prior to becoming a University president, in September of 2012 to talk about his book “The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking.” In February of 2013 he became the 15th president of Southwestern University. Prior to his current position, he was the Francis Christopher Oakley Third Century Professor of Mathematics at Williams College, where he served from 1990 to 2013, as well as the former vice-provost at Baylor University. A New York native, President Burger graduated summa cum laude in mathematics from Connecticut College and earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. President Burger is a prolific author and noted scholar, having authored or co-authored more than 35 research articles, as well as 12 books. His most recent book, which he co-authored with Michael Starbird, is “The 5 Elements of Critical Thinking,” the focus of a Join the Conversation podcast in September 2012.
Could we think more effectively? Edward Burger, PhD thinks so. He and co-author Michael Starbird have a new book called The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking that offers concrete strategies on how to provoke ourselves into a more brilliant thought process. They draw upon the five Chinese elements–earth, fire, air, water, and the quintessential element of change –as a sort of “intellectual GPS” to explain their recommendations and techniques.Beyond an interest in this topic, what drew us to their book is the breadth of their teaching experience and connection to college students for decades. In our interview we want to know how college kids look these days? What makes kids want to learn? How can parents nurture their kids to become critical thinkers and engaged, passionate learners? We’ll be talking with Ed about ways to sharpen our thinking, so we can inspire our kids with their learning, and ourselves to make better parenting and life decisions.
Ed Burger is co-author, with Michael Starbird, of a delightfully thoughtful Princeton University Press book about thinking, The Five Elements of Effective Thinking. While the book is not specific to Math, there's plenty of thinking in all things mathematical plus my interviewee is a Math professor and a remarkably engaging one at that!I had a list of questions to ask Dr. Burger but I found myself straying from my plan because Ed's answers inspired other lines of inquiry. I experienced a number of aha's during our chat. If you're a parent or student you might gain some valuable insights about how you can improve your relationship with Math, and ultimately your grades. As a voracious thinker I thought I knew a lot about the subject of this book. I'm humbled and grateful to have much to think about after this interview. Enjoy!
“O Matemático Disfarçado” de Edward B. Burger e Michael Starbird, apresenta a matemática numa perspectiva ao alcance de qualquer um, cheio de pinceladas de humor.
