How would you like to think with greater clarity, feel confident in your choices, and finally be capable of sticking to good habits? Today's guest might just show you how. Shane Parrish is the entrepreneur and wisdom seeker behind Farnham Street and The Knowledge Project podcast, where he focuses on mastering the best of what other people have figured out. He is also the author of the wonderful new book, Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments Into Extraordinary Results, in which he shares timeless insights and actionable tips, to help us all make better decisions in every aspect of our lives. When we think about decision-making, we probably think of those big choices in life as the ones that matter: what subjects to study, which job to take, house to buy or partner to settle down with. But Shane asserts that it's the smaller, everyday decisions that really shape our path. Choices like what to eat, how to respond to a tricky email or how to tackle a tricky conversation with your partner. And why these matter is because they become our customary, quick-fire responses – behaviours or habits, which we struggle to change because we don't fully understand that we're even doing them. This doesn't mean we have to take time to ruminate over every situation in life. Shane introduces the concept of personal rules as a powerful tool to override the ‘four defaults' driving most human behaviour: emotions, ego, social pressure and plain inertia. Overcoming them usually means relying on willpower. But rules – such as bedtimes, food choices, or technology limits – help us easily align decisions with our values and goals. Rules are just one of the super-useful hacks Shane shares. We discuss the difference between high-stakes decisions and quick-fire choices. He introduces the powerful notion of playing life on ‘easy mode' to put us in the best position for success – like setting the difficulty level on a video game in your favour.Shane also talks about the importance of separating problems from their solutions. And he advises appointing your own ‘board of directors' – real, historical, famous or fictional people whose opinion you'd value. ‘Consulting' them on dilemmas will give you new perspectives.Shane's ethos is all about finding the hidden opportunity in ordinary moments. In a world where our lives and minds feel increasingly cluttered, his advice can cut-through and help us find clarity.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Listen venting isn't always the way to go. So what's another way to express yourself and acknowledge how you feel, journaling and talking to God. Everyone doesn't need to know your business. Protect your relationships, Protect your friendships, Protect your workshops, Protect your family. Speak life, speak positively, speak truth. Don't allow your emotions to keep you in a false reality. Let's keep it real: our emotions and feelings can have us in a false reality, creating a magnified perception, and creating an image of the ones we love negatively to others or even of ourselves. Let's not do that. We can control this. Stop. Pause. Think: Respond, speak, act clearly! [I Do Not Own the Rights to the Background Sound. All Rights Reserved to Cluetonic Beats]

HASARD LEE is a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who began his career flying the F-16, where he was selected as the 'Top Instructor Pilot of the Year' for the Air Force's largest F-16 Combat Wing. As a flight commander, he led his pilots into combat during one of the most intense periods during the War in Afghanistan. There he flew over eighty combat missions and became the only fighter pilot to ever fly two different types of jets into combat on the same day while supporting troops under fire.Hasard was then hand-picked to fly the F-35―the most advanced and expensive weapons system in history―which was still in development at the time. During his last role on active duty, Hasard became the Chief of Training Systems for the largest training base in the world, leading the development of new technology and teaching methods to train future fighter pilots. In the book, he distills what he's learned during his career flying some of the Air Force's most advanced aircraft. In this episode of "A Magical Life" podcast, host Magic Barclay interviews Daniel Sih, the author of "Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind, and Think Clearly in the Digital Age." Daniel shares his journey of discovering the impact of digital overuse on our mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. He emphasizes the need to create intentional space in our lives by setting limits on technology use, planning patterns of unplugging, assigning rest before work, cultivating face-to-face relationships, and embracing silence for deep thought. Daniel's book provides practical tips and strategies to help individuals live a more balanced and holistic life in the digital age.Key Takeaways:The messages embedded within our devices shape the way we think and act. We need to be aware of the impact of technology on our worldview and habits.Digital power is inherited and requires intentional use for positive impact. We should consider how we can use our digital power to help others.Too much freedom and unlimited choice can be problematic. Setting life-giving limits on technology use leads to long-term freedom.Adopting patterns of rest, relationships, and deep thought creates space for the things that matter in our lives. The SPACE principles (Set Limits, Plan Patterns, Assign Rest before Work, Cultivate Community, Embrace Silence) guide us in creating intentional space in the digital age.Daniel is an award-winning author, TEDx speaker and productivity expert with 20 years experience working in senior leadership and strategic consulting roles across Australia and the UK. I hope that you didn't see the P word - purge, and it worried you. I mean, there was an entire movie about purging and (spoiler alert), they weren't purging clothes or paper. What I want you to think about when you hear ME say the word purge in this episode is purging things for clarity, peace and freedom. Because of a few past scenarios in my life, I find myself being a regular purger. It helps to provide mental and physical space in my life to actually think creatively and get things done. Join me for part 1 of this 4-part episode as we explore the world of Positive Purging.

Welcome to the Black Rifle Coffee Company podcast, where real stories and honest conversations brew. In this episode, join host Mike Glover as he welcomes guest Hasard Lee. Hasard Lee is a highly accomplished U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, recognized for his exceptional skills and leadership. He began his career flying the F-16, earning the prestigious title of 'Top Instructor Pilot of the Year' for the Air Force's largest F-16 Combat Wing. In the War in Afghanistan, he led his pilots as a flight commander in over eighty combat missions, making him the only fighter pilot to fly two different types of jets into combat on the same day while supporting troops under fire. Hasard was then selected to fly the F-35, the most advanced and expensive weapons system ever developed. As Chief of Training Systems for a major training base, he led the advancement of new technology and teaching methods for future fighter pilots. Hasard's bestselling book, "The Art of Clear Thinking," combines his firsthand experiences as a fighter pilot with historical turning points to provide powerful decision-making principles applicable to business and life. He is a prominent content creator with a highly popular military aviation channel on YouTube, having reached millions of viewers and engaged with numerous social media platforms. Hasard frequently shares his expertise with organizations and businesses, delivering talks on decision-making improvement, innovation, and mental toughness cultivation. "Small mistakes can have big consequences."When Hasard Lee was learning to dogfight in the F-16 fighter jet, he made a minor error while maneuvering the plane vertically and his airspeed dropped to 0. With afterburners fully engaged - sending a 30 ft flame from the back of the plane - he and the $70m jet were going backward. The nose of the plane suddenly snapped downward, and - at negative 2.4 G's - he's being pulled upward with over 500 pounds of force. With alarms blaring, he's heading into an out-of-control spin toward the Earth. 5 seconds before impact, Lee was able to stabilize the craft and regain airspeed. Based on years of experience making high-stakes, split-second decisions as a fighter pilot and later awarded 'Top Instructor Pilot of the Year' for the Air Force's largest F-16 Combat Wing, Hasard has spent the last six years cementing his knowledge in the new book The Art of Clear Thinking, which teaches readers to make clear decisions in their everyday life.Lee has also amassed a YouTube following that's watched over 10 million times each month and a 290 million person reach across social media in just two years. In today's conversation, James and Hasard pivot between death-defying stories and the principles that help make rational clear-headed decisions to avoid disaster and succeed.Buy The Art of Clear Thinking here from your favorite retailer!Check out Hasard's WebsiteWatch Hasard's YouTube channel, (10+ million views every month!)------------What do YOU think of the show? In this conversation, Karl Vaters talks to Daniel Sih about the information in his recent book, Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age. Specifically, we address three areas that are having a massive effect on our lives and ministries: Clutter Neuroplasticity The stories we tell In our increasingly tech-driven world, the technology that used to be (and still can be) so helpful is now causing significant changes to the way we work, worship, live, communicate and even the way our brains are wired. And many of these changes are not good. But the news is not all bad. Daniel offers great Bible-based insights into how we can acknowledge these challenges, offer a far better alternative, and minister in ways that answer people's deepest needs. But first, we need to get and stay healthy, ourselves. Stop living by the world's stories, and find ourselves immersed in the bigger, better story God is telling. Daniel teaches people how to rethink their relationship with technology and shift their work and life habits to be more productive. Essentially, he focuses on how to get the right things done in a meaningful, directional way. There's value in setting aside your devices, prioritizing non-tech habits and hobbies, and observing how technology impacts you and your family's happiness. Are you suffering from “digital overuse”? Are you mastering your tech tools or are they mastering you? Regardless of your answer, it's likely time for you to begin making pace and making space in your life. Tune in to learn how to do that as well as how pace and space can transform your relationship with technology, productivity, and happiness. Key Takeaways / What You'll Learn: [01:02] About Daniel Sih & Spacemaker. [03:00] How do you stay productive while parenting, running a business, or nurturing a marriage? [05:32] How a slower pace and rest can help you be more productive. We need space in the whirlwind of life to live our best life and to fully experience the world 2. Seasons (6 months to a year) of intentional imbalance are a part of life (note the word “intentional” and the concept of a “set period of time”; being stretched thin for more than a year will not serve you)3. Remember: You are more than your work/doctoral program!4. Learning how to rest is an investment, not just in terms of productivity and creativity but in terms of a meaningful human experience5. Mind wandering is important (give those “ah-ha” moments a space to appear), and if being alone with your thoughts is difficult, explore unresolved trauma with a professional6. Resting takes practice (be compassionate with yourself as you develop this skill)7. Implementing a day of rest can be a game-changer (see free downloads above)8. Know when technology is working for you…and when it is mastering you! 9. You do not need to be anti-tech to find value in unplugging from it 10. Don't forget you are human and you don't need to justify having meaningful human interaction, enjoying the sunshine, reading books, and feeding your mind with joyful thingsSome questions to ask yourself:· Have you taken time to develop a philosophy around technology?· Are you OK with letting your mind just wander? (remember the averse shock study?)· Are you ready to live life from the inside out (rather than the outside in?)· What small thing can you do to start making space in your life?Get The Happy Doc Student Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578333732Other resources at: http://Expandyourhappy.com Support this free content: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/expandyourhappyWant to make my day? What would our lives be like if we had time everyday where we disconnected, not just from our phones, but from our computers, our televisions, our iwatches. Would we feel a sense of relief at the ability to disconnect and just be present in our non digital surroundings? Think about all the things we do with our phones- calling, texting, emailing, navigating, booking ubers, listening to podcasts or audiobooks or the news, watching youtube, listening to music, playing video games, taking photograms, and, not least of all participating in social media. It's tied to everything we do, and don't do - it's by our beside when we sleep, we never leave the house without it - because if we did we'd certainly miss it and stress out about not having it. So. How do we establish annual, weekly and daily practices of self-care by unplugging from technology as a habit? Listen in as I talk with Danieh Sih, a trainer, coach and an author of Spacemaker - How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age", a book which won the Australian Business Book Award in 2021, to talk about how to establish healthy digital boundaries.
