In today's episode, I'm talking with Jenni L. Walsh. Her latest novel, Unsinkable, tells the story of Violet Jessop, a stewardess who survived the sinking of the Titanic as well as maritime disasters aboard Titanic's two sister ships! We talked about Jenni's desire to tell Violet's story along with her decision to write a dual timeline novel with a parallel story about another "unsinkable" woman. Jenni's loves sharing the stories of little-known women who've made remarkable contributions to history. Here's a description of Unsinkable: The Titanic was only the beginning. What she survived has become legend. Violet Jessop is Miss Unsinkable. After her mother becomes too ill to work, the responsibility to provide for the family falls to Violet as the oldest of nine. When the world enters the Great War, she serves as a nurse, helping men who could very well be her brothers. Working as a stewardess and wartime nurse, Violet not only survives a shipwreck but also two sinkings, one on the infamous Titanic. No one can understand why she would return to sea, but something keeps drawing Violet back to the tumultuous waters, where she struggles to put the tragedies of her past behind her and pursue a life and love all her own. Daphne has survived calamity of her own. Daphne Chaundanson grows up as an unwanted child after her mother died in a tragedy. She throws herself into education, collecting languages like candy in a desperate attempt to finally earn her father's approval. When the Special Operations Executive invites her to be an agent in France in World War II, her childhood of anonymity and her love of languages make her the perfect fit. She sees it as an opportunity to help the country she loves and live up to her father's expectations. But the dangers of war challenge Daphne in ways she never could have expected, and the secrets from her own past must be faced for her to truly have a future beyond the conflict—if she can survive it. Inspired by true stories of Violet Jessop and the thirty-nine women of the Special Operations Executive. Two unsinkable women. Two stories of survival, family, and finding one's own happiness. One connection that reshapes both their lives forever. Purchase Unsinkable on Amazon (affiliate). Purchase Violet Jessop's memoir on Amazon (affiliate). When it comes to being in the wrong place at the wrong time, sometimes making it out in one piece comes down to good old-fashioned luck. In maritime history, the award for luckiest person goes to a woman named Violet Jessop. She not only survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, but she also survived the sinking of another famous ocean liner, Britannic, four years later. Incredibly, Violet Jessop was aboard the RMS Olympic when it almost sank years earlier after colliding with a military vessel. The Queen of Sinking Ships eventually earned the nickname Miss Unsinkable. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bible Reading: Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 3:23; 10:9-10 Ding. The oven timer rang. "C'mon, everybody," Lucy shouted. "My cookies are done!" Ricky ran in and looked through the oven window. "They've melted into one giant mess! And how come it's so burnt?" Mom grabbed pot holders. "You set the oven temperature to 350 degrees, right?"Lucy picked up the recipe card. "Oh no, I misread it! I thought this said 450 degrees!""Uh-oh." Mom opened the oven door, and smoke billowed out--setting off the smoke alarm.Dad rushed in. "Where's the fire?"Ricky laughed and pointed to the oven. "Check out Lucy's burnt cookie blob."Lucy groaned. "It looks like one Titanic-sized cookie now. It's a disaster!""It's not a disaster," Mom said, giving Lucy a hug."It's funny you mentioned the Titanic," Dad said. "Now that was a disaster. Did you know the Titanic had two sister ships named the Olympic and the Britannic? Strangely enough, they had disasters too."Ricky nudged Lucy. "As bad as these cookies?""The Titanic hit an iceberg and sank," Dad said. "The Britannic struck a water mine and sank. The Olympic didn't sink, but it collided with two different ships and rammed into a German submarine.""A nurse named Violet Jessop was on each ship during their disasters," Mom said."That's right," Dad said. "They nicknamed her Miss Unsinkable.""Wow," Lucy said. "I can't imagine escaping one disaster like that--much less three!""Actually," Dad said, "there's a much bigger disaster we all can escape. The Bible talks about sin. You know what sin is, but do you know what sin does?""What does it do?" Lucy asked."Sin separates us from God," Dad said. "It destroys us--it sinks us just like those ships sunk. But God has a plan to rescue us.""Through Jesus, right?" said Ricky."Right," said Dad. "God sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. If we trust Jesus as our Savior, He saves us from sin so we're no longer separated from God. Instead of certain death, we have eternal life with Him.""I'm glad God provided a way to rescue us," Lucy said.Ricky grinned. "Too bad there's no way to rescue your cookie." Matt Shoemaker How About You?Have you escaped the disaster of sin? The Bible says we all need to be rescued from sin because it destroys us and eternally separates us from God. God put His rescue plan into action by sending His Son to save us. When we trust in Jesus, we're no longer headed for destruction. Trust Him to rescue you.
