If 2025 felt like a mystery to you, like how TF did they skyrocket while I stayed stuck?, this episode will help you unpack it all.Because while some experts had their biggest revenue years yet (despite the shifting economy, algorithm changes, and buyer behavior), others were quietly bowing out, downsizing, or burning out. And honestly? The difference wasn't just about who had the prettiest brand or trendiest offers. In this behind-the-scenes breakdown, I'm discussing what I saw. Up close and personal. As someone with a front row seat to dozens of businesses (including my own), I'm sharing the five key factors that separated the experts who soared from the ones who felt like they were sinking. We'll talk:What really drove sales in 2025 (spoiler: it wasn't a fluke or luck)Why consistency still matters, and how it looks different depending on where you're atThe role of confidence, embodiment and authority in your conversionsHow to spot if it's a volume issue or a demand problem (yes, there's a difference)The number one mistake I saw with offers, and what to do if yours didn't land last yearPlus, I'm giving you the exact questions to audit where you're at now so you can fix what's not working before another year rolls by.This one is part pep talk, part strategy breakdown, and totally essential if you're planning to scale in 2026 without burning down your business.

The greatest energy source for civilization before the steam engine was wind. It powered the global economy in the Age of Sail. Wind-powered sail ships made global shipping fast and cheap by harnessing free, reliable ocean winds to propel large cargo loads over vast distances without needing fuel or frequent stops. It also powered windmills, the factories of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Windmills allowed for abundant bread by milling flour by turning heavy grindstones with wind-driven sails. They also powered trip hammers to forge iron and steel by lifting and dropping massive weights. We can credit them as well for pumped water, sawed timber, and processed oils, spices, and paper. Wind is one of most elemental yet overlooked forces shaping our world today, and it is at the center of the human story. Many times it changed history – such as “Protestant Wind” saving England from the Spanish Armada, kamikaze winds halting the Mongol invasions of Japan, and easterlies carrying Chernobyl’s fallout. Wind also powers massive turbines today, but there was a forgotten moment in the 1880s when we could’ve chosen wind power over fossil fuels. It even creates certain types of civilizations. Some historians believe the cleverest and most civilized people lived in places where weather was varied and posed constant challenges. Today’s guest is Simon Winchester, author of “The Breath of the Gods: The History and Future of the Wind.” We look at how wind—life‐giving and destructive, chaotic and harnessable — has shaped civilization from antiquity to today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Uluburun Shipwreck as a Bronze Age Microcosm: Colleague Eric Cline discusses the Uluburun shipwreck, which sank around 1300 BC and serves as a time capsule for the Late Bronze Age, describing the ship as a microcosm of a globalized network carrying cargo from at least seven different civilizations including Mycenaeans, Egyptians, and Hittites, with ten tons of copper from Cyprus and tin likely from Afghanistan—enough to outfit an army of 300 soldiers with bronze gear—highlighting the sophistication of ancient trade evidenced by standardized Canaanite storage jars and a rare gold scarab belonging to Nefertiti. 1956
On September 28, 1994, the MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea, taking 852 of her 989 passengers with her in what remains, to this day, one of the worst maritime disasters in European history. Thirty years later this ship and her sinking is still the subject of controversy, conspiracies, and unanswered questions.
There's a place on Earth where oceans collide, winds scream, and waves rise like walls. Sailors call it the most dangerous sea passage on the planet — and for centuries, countless ships have vanished there. Freezing waters. Sudden storms. Magnetic disturbances. Hidden rocks waiting beneath the surface. Even today, modern ships struggle to cross it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Send us a textA freighter longer than a skyscraper is tall. Waves four seconds apart that can bend steel. A ballad recorded in a single take that changed how an entire industry thinks about risk. We sat down with John U. Bacon, author of The Gales of November, to trace the Edmund Fitzgerald from blueprint to bell, and from storm science to the quiet rooms where families still keep watch. We unpack what makes the Great Lakes uniquely dangerous: freshwater's sharper, closer-spaced waves; locally brewing systems that sit right over your head; and the long, narrow hulls forced by the Soo Locks. John explains how changes to the Plimsoll line let ships ride lower and heavier than intended, why welded seams and added tonnage tightened margins, and how a northern route, dark beacons, and dead radar turned one November run into a blind sprint. We revisit the race dynamics of the locks, the near-miss culture of “just one more trip,” and the accident chain that can turn routine into tragedy in minutes.Beyond the mechanics, we spend time with the people whose choices and dreams were on board: a celebrated captain delaying retirement to pay for his wife's care, a young deckhand saving for a road trip and a future he'd mapped out, an engineer mailing a ring home days before the lake took him. Then we follow the song—Gordon Lightfoot's first-take recording that became a national memorial—and how attention, grief, and storytelling helped drive reforms. The most striking fact remains: from 1875 to 1975, the lakes saw thousands of wrecks; in the fifty years since the Fitzgerald, not one commercial ship has been lost.If you care about maritime history, human resilience, and how culture can push safety forward, this conversation belongs in your queue. Listen, share with a friend who loves Great Lakes lore or music history, and if it moved you, subscribe and leave a review to help others find the show.

MPR News was reporting on the story at the time. The day after the ship sank, MPR News reporter Claudia Hampston spoke to Erling Hanson. He was a boat engineer with experience sailing on Lake Superior. Here is Hanson's reaction to news of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.

Global shipping contributes about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the total emissions of Japan or Germany. The sector, including its contribution to climate change, is governed by the International Maritime Organisation or the IMO, which is a UN agency based in London in the United Kingdom.Last week, the International Maritime Organisation gathered to vote on a proposal to reduce emissions from ships that had been agreed to in principle earlier this year. And ahead of the gathering, most people intimately involved in the process thought the proposal would pass. But that wasn't the case. The US stepped in at the last minute and pressured all those gathered to delay the vote on the proposal for another 12 months. This week on Cleaning Up, host Bryony Worthington sits down with Professor Tristan Smith, a leading expert on shipping decarbonisation from UCL Energy Institute, to unpack the dramatic events at the latest International Maritime Organization meeting — where the United States' last-minute intervention derailed a landmark vote on cutting emissions from ships.Together, they explore:How global shipping, responsible for around 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, became a critical test case for international climate policyWhy the IMO's proposed carbon intensity regulation could have marked the beginning of the end for oil and LNG as marine fuelsThe “Tariff diplomacy” and other threats that reshaped global negotiationsWhat this means for COP30 and other multilateral agreements.Bryony and Tristan also dive deep into possible solutions: from e-fuels, ammonia, and battery electrification to nuclear propulsion — weighing what's practical, what's political, and what's merely wishful thinking.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Sea travel is safer today than at any point in history. But still, how worried should we be? Could a Titanic-like disaster happen today? Before we can answer our main question, we need to know what led to the sinking of the Titanic becoming one of the worst maritime disasters in history. Everyone knows the basic story: the ship hit an iceberg and there weren't enough lifeboats. The first big issue contributing to the ship's demise had to do with the culture of early twentieth-century ocean liners. The captains of these ships were under constant pressure to keep a tight schedule of arrivals and departures. Additionally, it was widely believed that icebergs didn't pose any significant danger to ships. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, host Gary Bird shares the five biggest dental marketing mistakes that nearly sank his career and how dentists can avoid them. These insights are critical for any dentist looking to improve dental practice growth, new patient acquisition, and marketing ROI. The last one is the biggest growth killer:1. Not knowing the difference between the three points of entry for a practice2. Not knowing the gap between high-intent vs low-intent patients3. Not realizing how leaky the patient journey really is4. Not seeing how some dentists treat insurance above the patient5. Not respecting the competition

Picture this: Your business is rolling. Bank deposits are coming in. Clients feel steady. And then—bam. One shift, one decision, one email from your “big client”... and your cash flow dries up overnight. That happened to me. And the mistake cost me six figures. In this week's Breadwinning Business Women episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on that story—and more importantly, the strategies you can use to make sure it doesn't happen to you. Here's a taste of what you'll hear inside: Why depending too heavily on one client is riskier than you think (and how to spot it before it's too late). The hidden trap of getting “comfortable checks” that quietly kill your hustle. The simple revenue rule I use now to protect my business from collapsing if one client walks away. After scaling a public adjusting firm during a major hurricane surge, Vince assumed his CFO, COO, and CMO had everything under control. But the numbers weren't adding up. If the Titanic never sank, the course of maritime history would have been dramatically different. The disaster led to significant changes in ship safety regulations, so without it, there might have been a slower progression in maritime safety standards. The Titanic's tragic fate sparked advancements in technology and emergency procedures that influenced the entire industry. The event left a huge mark on popular culture, inspiring countless books, movies, and discussions about the "unsinkable" ship. And, of course, the lives of those aboard and their future generations would have been completely different. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In Part 2 of Episode 271, Leighton Sheldon shares a real-life story from the front lines of buying vintage collections — a high-value deal that nearly fell apart over a PSA 8 card with visible debris trapped inside the slab. Hear how Layton kept his cool, navigated the seller's emotions, and helped turn a tense situation into a productive outcome. Then the panel dives into a deep and at times philosophical conversation about quality vs. quantity in card collecting. What is “quality”? Is it about condition, value, scarcity, or personal meaning? What happens when your lower-grade card has better eye appeal than a higher-graded one? Joe, John, Jeremy, and Layton all weigh in with personal anecdotes, including collecting regrets, consolidation strategies, and how beauty in the hobby is truly in the eye of the beholder. Thousands of years ago, ancient cultures across Europe built massive stone structures with extraordinary precision. Scottish engineer Alexander Thom discovered these sites all used the same exact unit of measurement: 2.72 feet, which he called the Megalithic Yard. This measurement appeared everywhere, from Stonehenge to the Scottish Isles, at sites separated by thousands of miles and built across thousands of years. These structures weren't just monuments - they were sophisticated machines that tracked celestial movements with astonishing accuracy. How did ancient people without writing or advanced tools achieve such mathematical precision? Why does this measurement connect to fundamental constants of the universe? And most puzzling: why did they suddenly stop building these structures? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B70KYVTJ1is&t=125s Sources: Bright Insight: You Won't Believe This Disturbing Gobekli Tepe Update • You Won't Believe This Disturbing Gob...
