Welcome to Dragons of Spring Dawning!  We finally learn something about Berem. It isn't pretty. Neither is the ‘break-up' between Tanis and Kit! Which Tanis initiates in the middle of the night while Kit is away. His reunion with the rest of the Companions is full of tension. The tension is further heightened when Tanis demands they all leave as soon as possible the next morning. After arguing with the Captain of the Maquesta, Tanis and Company sail out of Flotsam. Kit finds Tanis' break-up note as soon as she returns and handles that about how you'd expect her to. Tanis' and Kit's relationship issues are about to be everyone else's problem.  Content warning - N/A You can find us at: Jonathon - https://bsky.app/profile/falselogic.bsky.social Shivam - https://bsky.app/profile/shivambhatt.bsky.social Casual Magic w/ Shivam Bhatt - https://casualmagic.libsyn.com/ Shivam & Wheeler Love Magic - https://sites.libsyn.com/460224 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1147877956611082 Discord - https://discord.gg/MM7nEwgmZv We now have a Patreon for those who want to support the podcast! Diana Taylor: A practice where research and materiality meet. Presented by What's My Thesis? in partnership with DON'T LOOK Projects In this illuminating live conversation recorded at DON'T LOOK Projects, UK-based artist Diana Taylor joins host Javier Proenza (What's My Thesis?) for a deeply textured discussion around her first solo show in the United States, Flotsam and Jetsam. Organized by DON'T LOOK Projects in association with SLQS Gallery in London, the exhibition draws on Taylor's research-intensive practice, exploring time through the fusion of research and materiality. Her work employs a remix logic, echoing Sigmar Polke's 1980s period. Currently in a short-term fellowship at The Huntington, Taylor speaks about her practice-based research. Her PhD was in collaboration with the William Morris Gallery, where she focused on how historical craft, screen-printing, and reproducibility inform her contemporary approach to painting. With roots in both rural Wiltshire and Cyprus, Taylor's early exposure to English landscape painting, tapestry, and devotional patternwork creates a foundation for her ongoing material inquiries into time, collapse, and visual culture. The conversation explores: Taylor's use of screenprinting on raw and repurposed canvas as a method of layering digital and analog imagery The influence of William Morris, The Divine Comedy by Gustav Doré, Sigmar Polke and 1970s suburban interiors on her visual lexicon A meditation on contemporaneity—the feeling of living amidst overlapping temporalities in the age of the internet The metaphor of Flotsam and Jetsam as a conceptual frame for image overload, cultural debris, and the residue of civilization Her experimental use of digital tools—zooming, pixelation, low-res 3D scanning—not to perfect, but to fail productively. Collapsing binaries: nature and culture, craft and tech, chaos and control, digital noise and sacred relic Also discussed is Taylor's current work at The Huntington, where she's engaging with historical plant taxonomies, rare botanical prints, and Morris's medieval utopian socialism to produce a new body of work and a forthcoming article in The Journal of William Morris Studies. Flotsam and Jetsam is on view at DON'T LOOK Projects through August 30, 2025. Please email gallery@dontlookprojects.com to schedule a private viewing. Listen to this episode to uncover: Why Taylor considers pixelation and printed crochet as relics of maternal labor and digital memory How screenprinting becomes a form of archaeological gesture The relationship between digital overstimulation and visual stillness Why artists might choose ruin, repetition, or failure as aesthetic strategies in a culture obsessed with optimization Featured Institutions & Collaborators: The Huntington Library, William Morris Gallery, DON'T LOOK Projects, SLQS Gallery, What's My Thesis? Jon, Lizzy, Danny, and Jenn talk over how exactly to say Flotsam, and their favorite chapters as well. These chapters were good!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 25, 2025 is: flotsam • FLAHT-sum • noun Flotsam refers to the floating pieces that remain after a shipwreck, or more broadly to any floating debris or wreckage. It is also used figuratively to refer to miscellaneous or unimportant material, often in the phrase "flotsam and jetsam." // Driftwood and other flotsam washed onto the beach. // Their apartment was adorned with the flotsam and jetsam of thrift stores and yard sales. See the entry > Examples: "The Vancouver multidisciplinary artist and educator [Alex Tedlie-Stursberg] works in various mediums, using found objects and natural materials scavenged from the ocean's edge and the landscape of the city. Detritus and flotsam become parts of beautiful sculptures, tableaus and assemblages in this artist's hands." — Dana Gee, The Vancouver (British Columbia) Sun, 23 Nov. 2024 Did you know? English speakers started using flotsam, jetsam, and lagan as legal terms in the 16th and 17th centuries, with flotsam itself dating to the first years of the 17th. The three words were used to establish claims of ownership of the three types of seaborne, vessel-originated goods they named. Flotsam was anything from a shipwreck (the word comes from Anglo-French floter, meaning "to float"), and jetsam and lagan were items thrown overboard to reduce the cargo weight of a ship. Lagan was distinguished from jetsam by having a buoy attached so the goods could be found if they sank. In the 19th century, when flotsam and jetsam took on extended meanings, they developed synonymous applications and are today often paired, lagan having mostly been left at sea.

DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER, the debut album from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, was released on July 4, 1986, after being recorded in just a mere 2 weeks with a paltry $12,000 budget. In short, it is a bona fide, legendary, thrash masterpiece. And if you're reading this and thinking “Okay, FLOTSAM & JETSAM…why does that sound familiar?”, the reason is because the bass player for that band would later become Metallica's new bassist following the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton in late 1986. It is without question, a speed/power/thrash/heavy metal classic that is so steeped in 1986 vibes that we're actually surprised none of the album was featured on “Stranger Things”.   Learn the latest metal conspiracy theory regarding AJFA with a shocking twist nobody saw coming, discover a great new way to “get in shape” with the brand-new aerobic workout craze that's sweeping the nation, get ready to enjoy the “tang” and JOIN US for the only “first new album” featuring Jason Newsted with a killer bass mix as we take on DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. We are reunited with Tanis, Raistlin and the rest of the Companions who we last saw leaving Silvanesti. We meet up with them in Port Balifor tired and road weary. Raistlin's sleight-of-hand and magic ensures they eat and lodge for free. It also becomes the means by which the Companions raise enough funds to travel safely to Flotsam and book passage on a ship to Sancrist. We are also reunited with Sturm, who has not been as lucky as Tanis and Company. Instead, he is put on trial by accusations from Derek, and while he escapes with his life and a chance to save it, he is stripped of his father's armor. Mark interviews Cathy Rankin and Ken Mary about Cathy's new single "Now You've Gone." On October 29, 2024, Cathy Rankin released her debut single “Now You've Gone,” featuring renowned musicians David Ellefson (formerly of Megadeth) Ken Mary (formerly of Alice Cooper) and John Ronson. The emotional track, inspired by deeply personal experiences, reflects on themes of love, grief, and ultimately hope. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by the 2024 Novel Writing Storybundle - Only available until the end of November 2024.   In the interview, Mark, Cathy, and Ken talk about: Cathy's various family members who are musicians, her first exposure to music when she was young and how that impacted her creative life Getting into theatre, and acting, when she was little, but not having the confidence in music itself The first time Cathy had to perform a singing scene when she was acting in a film The difference between being a performing musician and being a live host Ken's background as a musician having toured with various different artists over the years How being the lead singer might be one of the more difficult positions to be in, since the majority of the audience focus is on them (rather than, for example, the drummer) The concept of the instrument choosing the musician rather than it being the other way around - and how that's the way it was for Ken and playing the drums How playing drums was never "work" for Ken no matter what type of band he was in The great producers that Ken has worked alongside over the years The way that Cathy and Ken first met and started to work together (When Jon Ronson asked Cathy to interview Ken about his most recent album) Cathy showing some of her poems to Ken and getting some feedback on the option to produce one of them into a song How everything in this production unfolded organically and the chemistry of Cathy and the musicians in producing the song The delightful lyrical and musical Easter Eggs that appear in the song The connection between Neil Peart's loss of his daughter and the loss of Cathy's nephew Christian and why the song is a tribute to both their memories What people who want to support the musical artists can do to help out   After the interview Mark reflects on three different things that came up in the conversation, including the magic of organic creativity, the concept of playing a character when on stage, and the value of art, music, poetry, and prose in expressing deep emotion and forging connections. Clips from "Now You've Gone" have been used with permission. "Now You've Gone" is performed by: Cathy Rankin - Vocals, Lyrics Ken Mary - Drums/Percussion David Ellefson - Bass John Bronson - Guitar Produced and Mixed by Ken Mary/Sonic Phish Studios with contribution by Thomas Laufenberg   Links of Interest: Now You've Gone (YouTube) Cathy Rankin (Website) Instagram Facebook YouTube TikTok Twitter (X) Ken Mary Instagram Facebook YouTube Twitter (X) Superhero (Band) Merchandise from Deko Entertainment Storybundle.com/writing EP 388 - Unconditional Boundaries with Andy Lidstone EP 387- Rambling Reflections From The Disappointing Aftermath One Hand Screaming: 20 Haunting Years Books2Read Link Shop Local (Canadian Indie Bookstore Lookup) Mark's Stark Reflections on Writing & Publishing Newsletter (Signup) Buy Mark a Coffee Patreon for Stark Reflections How to Access Patreon RSS Feeds An Author's Guide to Working With Bookstores and Libraries The Relaxed Author Buy eBook Direct Buy Audiobook Direct Publishing Pitfalls for Authors An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City Lover's Moon Hex and the City Only Monsters in the Building The Canadian Mounted: A Trivia Guide to Planes, Trains and Automobiles Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard   One look and listen at Cathy Rankin and her stellar high notes, and you know she was born to entertain. Whether on stage, on camera, or in any crowd, Rankin brings a strong female voice to her music on every level. Never one to take a backseat, this force-to-be-reckoned-with doesn't just move fans with her powerful vocals, but also proudly reps the girls while holding her own with the guys. And, in Cathy's case, it's not just any ordinary "guys" that are part of her project, its renowned rockers David Ellefson, bassist (Kings of Thrash, Dieth, formerly of Megadeth), Ken Mary, Drummer/Composer/Producer (Flotsam and Jetsam, Great White, Fifth Angel, formerly of Alice Cooper and House of Lords), and guitarist John Bronson. This formidable line-up is on display on her new single, "Now You've Gone," with more music arriving soon. Cathy's natural inclination for music and performance was evident from an early age when she vowed she would be a singer and actor, and her dream never wavered. Her grandfather first influenced her love of music. An accomplished professional big band musician, he played saxophone, clarinet, flute, piccolo and piano, primarily by ear, practicing in his music room with Cathy paying close attention. This exposure, along with her grandmother, one of the first female violinists in the Scottsdale Symphony, and guidance from her big sister who played drums in the popular 80s metal band, Whiskey Blu, formed the musical foundation that would be a lifelong passion for this songstress. While Cathy's influences were wide-ranging, her original work is deeply rooted in classic rock woven with elements of blues, a touch of prog and at times even country, taking listeners on a journey reminiscent of the iconic frontwomen that defined female rock, such as Nicks, Wilson and Benatar. As a member of popular cover bands, Superhero and Daisy Train, Cathy spent years performing full time for thousands of audiences on countless stages, from Superbowl Fanfest, to corporate events, festivals and the Vegas Strip. Cathy is also co-host of the Metal Hall of Fame with Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show, Trunk Nation), and host of the annual Bubba Bash honoring Neil Peart. And through in-depth interviews with award-winning artists such as John Waite, Geoff Tate, Lita Ford, KIX, Winger, Fifth Angel, and more, Cathy has been able to share that education and inspiration with countless other passionate music fans. Ken K. Mary is an American musician who has worked as a drummer, producer, engineer, and record executive on over thirty-five albums. He has worked in genres from heavy rock to choral music. Mary is best known for his work with acts such as Accept, Fifth Angel, Chastain, TKO, Impellitteri, House of Lords, Bonfire and Alice Cooper, and is currently the drummer of Flotsam and Jetsam and Jack Russell's Great White   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0
