Welcome to Season 5, Episode 20! The Titanic sank over 110 years ago, but people are still fascinated with the disaster. This is especially true when there are new stories that come out about The RMS Titanic that are relatable or pique our curiosity. Hearing about the eight Chinese nationals who were on the Titanic as passengers and the six who survived is one of those moments where we learned something new, and we felt that we could relate to the story. But we wouldn't have known about this obscure bit of ignored history without the work of our guest, Steven Schwankert. Steven is an award-winning editor and author who seeks adventure and truth. His work researching and writing about the eight Chinese nationals and six survivors of the RMS Titanic resulted in both a documentary (completed by his creative partner Arthur Jones) as well as a new non-fiction book (completed by him)… both entitled The Six. In our conversation with Steven, we discuss his process of research, some of the narratives that came out of their discoveries, the treatment of the Chinese nationals who survived the disaster, the experience of providing closure for living relatives of these Chinese Nationals, seeking truth, and so much more. The Six book and documentary were both really informative engaging. If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. On April 15, 1912, one of the greatest disasters in modern nautical history took place. The RMS Titanic, one of the most celebrated ships of its era, struck an iceberg and sank on its inaugural voyage. While the story of the Titanic is well known, it has been exaggerated throughout the years, and there are many misconceptions about the ship and its sinking that have persisted to this day. Author, performer, podcaster, interviewer and host Nelson Aspen has covered a lot of ground in his highly prolific career, but he continues to return to one spot in particular, figuratively speaking: 41°43'32" N, 49°56'49" W...better known as the location of the most well known and intensely chronicled sea-faring vessel in history: White Star Line's RMS Titanic. For Nelson, his interest in the famed ship seems fated - He's felt a lifelong affinity with Titanic passenger, Milton Long! And Nelson shares Milton's story in a new historical fantasy/semi-autobiographical/reincarnation novel, Kindred Spirits: A Titanic Tale. We know that Milton met fellow passenger, Jack Thayer aboard Titanic. They were together as the ship went down. One lived. One perished. Is it a gay Titanic love story? Historical records point to the reality that a budding affection between the two men was developing at sea. As the ship met her fate, only women and children were permitted in lifeboats which were being sent into the water half full. Their only hope was to jump. Jack launched himself into the water and balanced on an overturned collapsable lifeboat for hours before his rescue. Milton slid down the now nearly vertical banister and was sucked beneath the ship where he died.Titanic and Milton remained with Jack for long after the tragic events of April 14, 1912. Nelson's book builds on a metaphysical premise that allows readers to examine a unique juxtaposition between the constraints of Edwardian morals and the life-affirming spirit of the contemporary LGBTQ community. We discuss the documentary 'Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries' which Nelson worked on with Alexandra Boyd, his co-host on the Titanic Talk podcast, which captures the extent of the impact the 1997 movie made on all who were involved with the production.Nelson shares his thoughts on why modern audiences continue to gravitate to the liner's ill-fated maiden voyage, his thoughts on collecting Titanic artifacts, why no single person or entity can shoulder the blame for the tragic event, plus where he's heading on his upcoming appearances and the latest installment in his semi-autobiographical series, Dancing Between The Raindrops! In recommendations--Fritz: Netflix Series, The ResidenceWeezy: The Dark Money Game on HBOPath Points of Interest:Nelson AspenKindred Spirits: A Titanic TaleNelson Aspen Amazon PageShip of DreamsTitanic Talk PodcastNelson Aspen on YouTubeNelson Aspen on InstagramNelson Aspen on XNelson Aspen on TikTokThe Residence-NetflixThe Dark Money GameDark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Meyer

Tällä historiallisella päivämäärällä RMS Titanic upposi sekä insuliinin käyttö diabeetikoilla yleistyi. Lisäksi Gunnar Bärlund voitti nyrkkeilyn Euroopan mestaruuden, Hillsboroughin stadiononnettomuus tapahtui sekä tuhkapilvi ilmestyi Euroopan taivaalle Islantilaisen tulivuoren purkauduttua.
We all know the story of the sinking of the RMS Titanic but something that's lesser known is what specific jewellery and other luxury items were on board the most opulent ship on earth when it sank to the bottom of the Atlantic. In the first two parts, Matthew and Alyce look closely at some of the insurance claims made after the disaster, which provide an insight into one particularly incredible (and huge!) personal collection which includes Bermese Rubies, Colombian Emeralds and a mysterious Pink Diamond that may have partly inspired Kate Winslet's necklace in the 1997 movie! www.courtville.ie Get social with Courtville, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok This podcast was produced for Courtville by Tape Deck

April 10, 1912. As the RMS Titanic pulls away from a crowded port on the south coast of England, it almost crashes. Just in time, it's able to turn off its engines and prevent a collision with a smaller ship. Four days later, though, a serious disaster will not be avoided, and the Titanic's first voyage will be her last. But during her brief life, the vessel is a microcosm of the Gilded world around her. How did this opulent luxury liner come to exist? And how did it foretell the dangers of wealth, technology, and arrogance that shaped the world around it, and the world we live in now? Special thanks to our guests, Susie Milar and Gareth Russell, author of The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era. **This episode originally aired April 4, 2022. In August 1994, Dik leads a dive to the bottom of the Atlantic - to explore an uncharted section of RMS Titanic. The mission is going off without a hitch, until their sub is knocked off course by a freak ocean current. Trapped within the wreckage, with dwindling oxygen supplies, Dik must think fast. One hundred and sixty minutes. That is all the time rescuers would have before the largest ship in the world slipped beneath the icy Atlantic. There was amazing heroism and astounding incompetence against the backdrop of the most advanced ship in history sinking by inches with luminaries from all over the world. It is a story of a network of wireless operators on land and sea who desperately sent messages back and forth across the dark frozen North Atlantic to mount a rescue mission. More than twenty-eight ships would be involved in the rescue of Titanic survivors along with four different countries. At the heart of the rescue are two young Marconi operators, Jack Phillips 25 and Harold Bride 22, tapping furiously and sending electromagnetic waves into the black night as the room they sat in slanted toward the icy depths and not stopping until the bone numbing water was around their ankles. Then they plunged into the water after coordinating the largest rescue operation the maritime world had ever seen and thereby saving 710 people by their efforts. The race to save the largest ship in the world from certain death would reveal both heroes and villains. It would begin at 11:40 PM on April 14, when the iceberg was struck and would end at 2:20 AM April 15, when her lights blinked out and left 1500 people thrashing in 25-degree water. Although the race to save Titanic survivors would stretch on beyond this, most people in the water would die, but the amazing thing is that of the 2229 people, 710 did not and this was the success of the Titanic rescue effort. We see the Titanic as a great tragedy but a third of the people were rescued and the only reason every man, woman, and child did not succumb to the cold depths is due to Jack Phillips and Harold McBride in an insulated telegraph room known as the Silent Room. These two men tapping out CQD and SOS distress codes while the ship took on water at the rate of 400 tons per minute from a three-hundred-foot gash would inaugurate the most extensive rescue operation in maritime history using the cutting-edge technology of the time, wireless. To talk about this race against time is frequent guest Bill Hazelgrove, author of the new book One Hundred and Sixty Minutes: The Race to Save the RMS Titanic.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Few maritime disasters have captured the public imagination like the RMS Titanic. Perhaps it's because of the relatively recent nature of its sinking, compared to the loss of the Mary Rose warship. The countless films, documentaries, and exhibitions probably help in prolonging fascination. New theories and reconstructions attempt to pin blame on one factor or another as the reason the ship sank. Ready to revisit one of history's greatest maritime mysteries with a glass of Old Smoky Moonshine in hand? Join us for the return of Drunk Conspiracies, featuring our special guest and my cousin of 24 years, Fallon D'Anna-Sheffer! We're not just catching up; we're diving headfirst into the captivating and tragic tale of the RMS Titanic. From its grand construction in Belfast to its infamous sinking, we explore the staggering costs behind the ship and the blockbuster movie, adding layers to our understanding and sparking lively debate.Ever wondered if the Titanic's demise was more than an unfortunate accident? Fallon and I explore some eyebrow-raising theories, like the infamous fire theory that might have weakened the hull, making the ship more vulnerable to the iceberg. And what about financier JP Morgan? Could he have orchestrated the disaster to eliminate business rivals? We also touch on the heroic survival story of Charles Joughin, the ship's head baker, who might owe his life to a drunken state. Expect plenty of twists and turns as we unravel these stories, challenging the conventional narrative we've all been taught. But that's not all—we're diving deep into conspiracies you might never have considered. Was the Titanic swapped with its sister ship, the Olympic, in a monumental insurance fraud? Did Captain Edward Smith play a controversial role in the disaster? And how about those lifeboats—why were they so few, and was it a ploy for aesthetic appeal or something more sinister? With a dash of humor and a splash of speculation, we even reminisce about Mythbusters tackling the age-old question: Could Jack have fit on the door with Rose? Tune in for a thought-provoking and spirited discussion that promises to offer a fresh perspective on one of history's most infamous disasters.
When the RMS Titanic launched in April of 1912, it was the pinnacle of luxury and the largest vessel to ever set sail. It was also an engineering marvel, as sophisticated as the most elegant hotels, and deemed incapable of sinking. But on its maiden voyage, in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic, the Titanic collided with a massive iceberg. Within minutes, the ship began to take on water, and the unthinkable began: the start of a shocking and tragic maritime disaster.Order your copy of the new American History Tellers book, The Hidden History of the White House, for behind-the-scenes stories of some of the most dramatic events in American history—set right inside the house where it happened.Listen to American History Tellers on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. RMS Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 claiming the lives of more than 1500 people. Just over 700 survived the disaster. The events surrounding the sinking of the luxury ocean liner, the identities of those on board, plus the stories of heroism and heartbreak on the night have generated global fascination in the vessel, which continues to this day. And that interest in Titanic has generated huge commercial appeal and revenue - for writers, film and documentary makers, museums and auction houses. We examine how some mysteries surrounding the doomed ship continue to spawn so many, varied business ventures around the world - and the ethical questions that arise from the continued fascination in the Titanic story. On the night of April 14th, 1912, whilst most of her passengers had retired for the night, the RMS Titanic - the largest and most lavish ocean liner of its time - glided smoothly through the dark, icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly, shortly before midnight, the ship's lookouts spotted a massive iceberg emerge from the blackness of its path. News of the ship's imminent danger quickly spreads amongst its crew, who try desperately to evade the disaster that was looming before them… But it was already far too late.We all know how the rest of the story goes... Cue the collision, cue the terror, and cue the subsequent sinking of the infamously “Unsinkable” ship.On the ocean floor, she now slept. That night, the Titanic claimed the lives of approximately 1500 people. One hundred and eleven years later…- She would claim five more. However, the survey also revealed significant deterioration, notably the loss of a key portion of the ship's bow railing, a prominent feature in media representations and the 1997 film *Titanic*. This railing, seen in place as recently as 2022, is now on the sea floor next to the ship. The survey, involving over 2 million high-resolution images and advanced mapping technologies, underscores the fragility of the Titanic wreck. RMS Titanic Inc. remains committed to preserving the ship's legacy while documenting its current condition. For more details, visit expedition.discovertitanic.com. John Hamer, a former IT professional turned geopolitical researcher, has spent over two decades uncovering the truth behind historical events often shrouded in deception. He has authored eight books, including the widely recognized The Falsification of History, which challenges mainstream narratives. Among his notable works - and the focus of this episode - are two books on the Titanic, where he presents compelling evidence that it was not the RMS Titanic but its sister ship, RMS Olympic, that sank in 1912. To talk about this race against time is frequent guest Bill Hazelgrove, author of the new book One Hundred and Sixty Minutes: The Race to Save the RMS Titanic.
"There is no danger that Titanic will sink. The boat is unsinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers." The sinking of the Titanic, on a freezing Sunday night in April 1912, claimed more than 1500 lives. But how this state-of-the-art ocean liner came to be is also a story full of drama, encapsulating the turn of the century's spirit of competition and drive for modernity. The booming financial world of the 1900s, rising immigration, the excitement of speed and steam, and an ever-growing transatlantic rivalry between Britain and the U.S. all played a part in the liner's inception. And from this era emerged three men who would shape the Titanic's journey: J.P. Morgan, an American titan of business; Thomas Ismay, the English magnate who owned the ship's parent company; and William Pirrie, a leading British shipbuilder. Between these three men and two pivotal cities - New York and Belfast - the origins of the disaster that defined a generation can be traced… Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the context behind the building of RMS Titanic. From the rivalries of the transatlantic liner industry, to the tensions surrounding the Irish Home Rule movement, the story of the “unsinkable” began in a tumultuous age. *The Rest Is History LIVE in 2024* Tom and Dominic are back onstage this summer, at Hampton Court Palace in London!
