Revelation Dates: December 27, 1832 – January 3, 1833 Revelation Place: Kirtland, Ohio Section 88 - Historical Background: Just 2 days after receiving section 87, containing the prophecies of war and terrible destruction, the Lord sends this new revelation (or series of revelations) containing words of peace. Joseph refers this revelation as an olive leaf. About a year earlier, in section 71, Joseph and Sidney were told to expound the mysteries of the scriptures. Now, in this revelation, Joseph and 10 other elders gathered in the Whitney store in Kirtland, and were instructed to organize a school of the prophets and also a house of God. Recap, verses 1-126 received December 27-28, 1832: The Lord is pleased with these brethren and promises them the Second Comforter. All things are governed by the light of Christ. Men's obedience to Christ will determine which kingdom of glory they will inherit. Death is part of the merciful plan of God, so each spirit can be glorified to its proper and appropriate level, and then quicken the body accordingly in a resurrected state, to abide in their particular kingdom of glory. The heavens themselves reflect the majesty of God. Stay close to God and draw near to Him, praying for direction on a continuous basis. Sanctify yourselves. The Lord will hasten His work in His own time. The Lord commands the saints to assemble, sanctify themselves and teach one another. Various teaching subjects are given to prepare them for the mission He has for them. Signs of the last days are given, along with a commandment to preach and warn others. When Christ returns, the valiant saints will be caught up to meet him, along with the righteous who have died previously. Subsequent angels will then sound their trumps as various events occur until the Judgement day. Each thousand years of mortality will be viewed correspondently, revealing all the acts of mankind. Ultimately, Satan will be bound and expelled. The saints are to seek learning, organize themselves and establish a school of the prophets and establish a house of God. Needful qualities of member's righteousness are listed. Recap, verses 127-141 received January 3, 1833: The organization of the school of the prophets is given. Not all should talk at once, but a teacher should be appointed and order kept. All who attend must be worthy saints. They are to commence in prayer for the Spirit so the school may become a sanctuary and then the sacrament is to be administered.  

MANY OF US AMERICANS CARE FOR THE TEMPORAL NEEDS OF OUR BODY, BUT NEGLECT TO CARE FOR THE ONE THING NEEDFUL, THAT IS, THE NEED TO CARE FOR OUR SOUL. ALL OF US AS AMERICANS KNOW WE ARE DYING, AND THUS WE PREPARE FOR OUR DEATH, BY SAVING FOR OUR RETIREMENT, ETC. , AND MAYBE A SUDDEN DEATH WITH LIFE INSURANCE, AND WE CARE FOR OUR TEMPORAL NEEDS BY EATING HEALTHY, EXERCISE, ETC. BUT THE QUESTION IS, WHAT ARE WE DOING TO CARE FOR OUR SOUL, FOR OUR SOUL IS IMMORTAL, IT IS NOT GOING TO DIE, BUT WHEN IT DEPARTS FROM OUR BODY OUR BODY IS CONSIDERED DEAD. SO THEN WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR SOUL?OUR UPCOMING TEMPORAL DEATH OF OUR BODY IS A SIGN THAT OUR SOUL WILL EXPERIENCE ETERNAL DEATH IF WE HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THE ANTIDOTE OF BREAKING GOD'S COMMANDMENT. AND THUS THE QUESTION THAT WE AS JOHN Q. PUBLIC ASK, IS, WHY IS OUR BODY DYING?WOULD IT NOT BE THE SAME REASON WHY ADAM DIED: HE BROKE A COMMANDMENT. THUS WOULD NOT THAT BE WHY WE AS AMERICANS ARE DYING, WE HAVE BROKEN A COMMANDMENT. SO IT APPEARS THAT WE AS AMERICANS ARE BORN INTO THIS WORLD ON DEATH ROW. SO OUR BODY DYING, IS SIMPLY A WARNING TO US THAT WE ARE UNDER THE JUDGMENT OF GOD, BUT THE QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE ANTIDOTE TO DEATH, IF BREAKING A COMMANDMENT OF GOD LEADS TO ETERNAL DEATH. WE AS JOHN Q. PUBLIC OF AMERICA BEING THE SIMPLE PEOPLE WE ARE SAY TO OURSELVES, THE ANTIDOTE TO DEATH WOULD BE THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IS CAUSING DEATH, AND THEREFORE WHAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF BREAKING A COMMANDMENT BUT NOT BREAKING A COMMANDMENT. BUT IF ALL OF US AMERICANS BREAK GOD'S COMMANDMENTS, WAS THERE EVER A MAN THAT DID NOT BREAK GOD'S COMMANDMENTS?ANSWER?2Cor. 5: [21] For he(JESUS' FATHER hath made him(JESUS) to be sin for us, who knew no sin( KEPT HIS FATHER'S COMMANDMENTS PERFECTLY)WHY?(IN ORDER) that we might be made the righteousness(PERFECT OBEDIENCE OF JESUS) of God in him.THEREFORE HOW DOW WE OBTAIN THE ONE THING NEEDFUL FOR OUR SOUL. WE AGONIZE TO OBTAIN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD BY FAITH BEFORE WE DIE PHYSICALLY AND THAT WILL BE THE ANTIDOTE TO ETERNAL DEATH. GEORGE WHITEFIELD IN THIS SERMON EHORTS US AS FOLLOWS:The care of the soul is the one thing needful, because “without it, you cannot avoid a state of eternal misery, which will be aggravated, rather than alleviated by all your present enjoyments.”Nothing can be more evident from the word of the God of truth. It there plainly appears to be a determined case, which leaves no room for a more favorable conjecture or hope. “The wicked shall be turned into hell, even all the nations that forget God,” Psalm 9:17. “They shall go away into everlasting punishment, Matt. 25:46, into a state where they shall in vain seek death, and death shall flee from them. Oh! brethren, it is a certain, but an awful truth, that your souls will be thinking and immortal beings, even in spite of themselves. They may indeed torment, but they cannot destroy themselves. They can no more suspend their power of thought and perception, than a mirror its property of reflecting rays that fall off its surface. Do you suspect the contrary? Make the trial immediately. Command your minds to create from thinking but for one quarter of an hour, or for half that time, and exclude every idea and every reflection. Can you succeed in that attempt? Or rather, does not thought press in with a more sensible violence on that resistance; as an anxious desire to sleep, makes us so much the more wakeful. Thus will thought follow you beyond the grave, thus will it, as an unwelcome guest, force itself upon you, when it can serve only to perplex and distress the mind. It will for ever upbraid you, that notwithstanding all the kind expostulations of God and man, notwithstanding all the keen remonstrances of conscience, and the pleadings of the blood of Christ, you have gone on in your folly, till heaven is lost, and damnation incurred; and all, for what for a shadow and a dream?

What if we suddenly lost access to the Bible and all the supplementary Biblical resources we've come to rely on? How much would remain in our hearts? All throughout the Bible, there is a reminder from God to store His Word in our hearts. Have we obeyed this crucial commandment? Despite our unlimited access, we've deprioritized a steady, daily consumption and meditation of God's Word. God doesn't have to send a "famine" as Amos warned Israel about, because we've silenced God on our own. As advanced and accomplished as we are in every category... as much attention as we give our physical and mental health... as eager as we are to chase after goals and success - we have ignored our Spiritual health and as a result, we are worse off spiritually, mentally, and physically. If we don't take care of our souls, our bodies and minds will suffer too. However healthy we may be, if we starve our spirits, we will struggle mightily. Truly, one thing is more necessary than other discipline. Listen as we spotlight the importance of healthy Spiritual habits, and the consequences for taking God's Word for granted.

Luke tells this seemingly simple story of Jesus' interaction with his dear friends Martha and Mary. Martha welcomes Jesus and sets about rushing around with meal preparations— a breathless hospitality with no time for anything, except building frustration, anger, jealousy, and self-martyrdom. All the while, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus— a “right-hearted” disciple, soaking in the teaching of Jesus. Martha comes to Jesus, seeking his aid to get Mary to help her in the kitchen. Many have taken Jesus' words to Martha as critical of her loving service and hospitality. One wonders whether Martha— and her fellow servants in the Church— have been overlooked in their concerns. Were Jesus' words a critique of serving per se or were they words of healing for a harried, distracted server? The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence… In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. I do therefore invite my fellow- citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.
