Mark Niethammer preaches on distractions. In today's world, distractions are constant and often unavoidable. But how often do they keep us from doing what truly matters? We're called to choose what's better in each moment—to be fully present, attentive to the joys, sorrows, and needs of those around us. It's easy to tune people out, to let lesser things consume our time, and to miss the opportunity to truly connect with others. One of the greatest distractions is believing that God's word is for others, but not for us personally. Preaching texts: Luke 10:38-42

For our last episode of the series, Stefani Blackwell and I go through eight different topics that (although sticky) didn't warrant a full episode. Many of these topics are more about personal preference as a parent as opposed to moral issues, so we simply share about how we have handled them in our homes without giving straight opinions on a "right" way to do them. Now that we have larger families (and older kids), we take many preferential things less seriously than we did when our kids were younger and that is a big relief! We also discuss that these topics are so much easier to handle when you are in a good place in your marriage. We give a few helpful hints, but encourage you to check out the marriage series I did last spring on The Better Part. Check out all episodes beginning "marriage," for MUCH more marriage discussion.

This week, Pastor Will talks about the story of Mary and Martha, another all too familiar passage from Luke's Gospel. Listen as we try to discern the 'one thing' God is calling us to do as individuals and a church.Scripture references: Amos 8:1-12; Psalm 52; Luke 10:38-42“WE FALL DOWN” -- CCLI Song # 2437367 | Chris Tomlin | © 1998 Rising Springs Music; Vamos Publishing; worshiptogether.com songs | For use solely with the SongSelect® Terms of Use. Luke tells this seemingly simple story of Jesus' interaction with his dear friends Martha and Mary. Martha welcomes Jesus and sets about rushing around with meal preparations— a breathless hospitality with no time for anything, except building frustration, anger, jealousy, and self-martyrdom. All the while, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus— a “right-hearted” disciple, soaking in the teaching of Jesus. Martha comes to Jesus, seeking his aid to get Mary to help her in the kitchen. Many have taken Jesus' words to Martha as critical of her loving service and hospitality. One wonders whether Martha— and her fellow servants in the Church— have been overlooked in their concerns. Were Jesus' words a critique of serving per se or were they words of healing for a harried, distracted server? The “answer” is “the one thing needful.” Note: The painting associated with this podcast (visible on the Epiclesis website podcast page) is "Christ in the House of Martha and Mary" (detail) by Vermeer.

Jesus calls us to the better part—not more activity, but deeper presence. In a noisy world, abiding begins with attention and love without hurry.
Today, we meet Martha and Mary at their home with Jesus as their guest. The two present to us two different ways of living our lives here on earth. We know that our stay here on earth is a preparation to be with God for eternity. Martha felt harassed and anxious about her working compounded by being alone without Mary not realizing she could be helping her. She asked Jesus for help. But the Lord helped her realize that Mary was fine listening to Him. He pointed out that Mary was agitated because she was missing something essential which was what Mary was doing, namely, her awareness of being with Jesus and listening to Him. That was the only thing necessary, that she in her concern shown in preparing to be hospitable with the Lord, she was not praying like her sister was.
