Episode 122 Pulpit and the Pyre: The Murder of Dawn Hacheney – Part 1 When a house fire claims the life of Dawn Hacheney the day after Christmas 1997, investigators initially conclude it was a tragic accident. A bedroom filled with Christmas gifts, portable propane cylinders, a space heater, and an elevated level of Benadryl appear to support a devastating—but explainable—chain of events. But as a fire protection engineer, April isn't content to stop at the official explanation. In Part One of this new series, we examine the fire scene, the science behind the original accidental-fire theory, and the unusual beliefs of the charismatic church community surrounding Dawn and her husband, youth pastor Nick Hacheney. Along the way, we explore authority, discernment, and how deeply held beliefs can shape the way people interpret tragedy. Five years would pass before everything investigators thought they knew about Dawn's death would be turned upside down. Wright welcomes Reverend Kevin T. Taylor—affectionately known as “RevKev”—for a conversation about calling, leadership, change, and spiritual reinvention.Rev. Taylor shares how God shaped his journey from growing up in the church and accepting the call to preach at seventeen to serving as both a pastor and a corporate executive. These two worlds became the foundation for his book, A Charge to Keep: Immutable Leadership Lessons from the C-Suite to the Pulpit.Drawing from lived experience, Rev. Taylor explains why reaching a position of leadership can be easier than remaining faithful and effective once you are there. He also discusses the loneliness leaders experience, the importance of documenting decisions, and the wisdom of casting vision generously while budgeting conservatively. The conversation explores how leaders can guide people through change without becoming discouraged by resistance. Rev. Taylor explains that opposition does not necessarily mean the vision is wrong—people may simply be grieving what was as they prepare to embrace what will be.You'll also hear an encouraging message about wilderness seasons, the cost of the anointing, lifelong learning, and the necessity of reinventing ourselves without compromising our God-given calling. In This EpisodeHow Rev. Send us Fan MailYour words can encourage, heal, inspire, and build—but they can also discourage, divide, and destroy. In this episode of Gospel Unfiltered, host Cornell Bunting explores the biblical importance of the words we speak over ourselves, our children, our relationships, our health, our purpose, and our future. This conversation examines what people really mean when they say, “Speak it into existence,” while making an important biblical distinction: believers are called to speak God's truth, pray in faith, act in obedience, and trust God with the outcome.Through Scripture and personal reflection, Cornell discusses the power of the tongue, the danger of gossip, the importance of speaking life over young people, and why faith-filled words must always be supported by wisdom, preparation, responsibility, and action. This episode will challenge you to examine your daily language and ask:Are my words producing life, fear, faith, healing, or destruction?Join us as we go Beyond the Pulpit for honest conversations, real stories, and Kingdom truth.New episodes air every Friday. Competency Cancels Fear: From Pulpit to Bureau — An FBI Agent's Guide to Fearless LivingWhat happens when you take a small-town Baptist pastor who's never held a gun and hand him a badge for the FBI? You get 24 years of stories that sound made up — teenage prostitutes, gang members, terrorists, SWAT raids — and a man who never lost sight of the fact that he was still, first and foremost, a shepherd. In this episode, Michael sits down with Eric Robinson — former pastor, 24-year FBI veteran, and SWAT operator — for a conversation that goes far beyond cop stories. Eric unpacks the concept that changed how he thinks about fear entirely: competency cancels fear. Not the absence of danger — the presence of preparation. They talk about:* Why Eric's headaches disappeared the day he left ministry for the FBI — and what his body was trying to tell him* The danger of carrying everyone else's burdens without anyone to carry yours* What "the flinch test" taught Eric about welcoming people the church often turns away* Why judgment on your face costs you influence later* The SWAT practice of "after action reviews" — and how it's a model every man could use in marriage, parenting, and recovery* Owning your mistakes before anyone calls you out on them, and why that's a mark of strength, not weakness* Redefining masculinity through the person of Jesus — kindness, availability, and truth spoken in love, not condemnationWhether you've never met an FBI agent or you've never sat with your own failures long enough to learn from them, this episode will challenge you to stop running from fear and start preparing for it.Eric's book, releasing this October, tells the full story — find out more at http://preachertobreacher.com.#IntentionalGuyPodcast#CompetencyCancelsFear#FromPulpitToBreacher#FBIAgent#SWATTeam#ChristianMasculinity#FaithAndCourage#MenOfFaith#BiblicalManhood#AfterActionReview#OwnYourMistakes#FearlessLiving#PastorToAgent#IronSharpensIron#ChristianMenPodcast
Friday, 31 July 2026 But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.' Matthew 21:38 “The ‘also, agronomists', having seen the son, they said in themselves, ‘This, he is, the heir. You come, we should kill him, and we should retain the ‘inheritance, his'.'” (CG) In the previous verse, Jesus said to the leaders, while still telling them the details of the parable, “Afterward, also, he sent to them the ‘son, his', saying, ‘They will be in-turned of the ‘son, mine'.” As noted, the normally recognized translation of the word entrepó in that verse is a positive state, like respect or reverence. This is something that should cause an immediate difficulty for those who know the outcome of the parable and what it is pointing to. The word signifies an in-turning. This can be positive or negative. The housemaster would be quite naïve to assume that those who had already killed his other servants would act favorably toward his son. Rather than respecting him, he would fully expect them to be ashamed of him and respond accordingly. Despite that, he sent him anyway. Having done so, it next says, “The ‘also, agronomists', having seen the son, they said in themselves, ‘This, he is, the heir.'” Almost all translations here say “But.” As if the response of the laborers is somehow a surprising new detail in the ongoing narrative. The word de is similar to the Hebrew prefix v', and. Translations will often translate v' as but, then, moreover, etc., based on a presupposition about what the text is saying. Those translations may carry the correct intent, or they may not. As such, it is best to leave it as “and.” Likewise, the Greek de means also (as in continuance). Saying “but” is a presupposition that may or may not rightly translate de. In this case, depending on how the previous verse is rendered, it may be incorrect. Saying “also” or “and” gives the right sense. In this case, the housemaster knew they would not respect his son, and that is just what happened. His appearance is recognized. He is obviously the son of the housemaster. When Jesus came, it was obvious that He was who He claimed to be. They were told explicitly who He was, and He did everything according to Scripture to prove that it was so. The evidence was overwhelming. To this day, because of the recorded words of Scripture, that remains true. All a person needs to do is to read the Old Testament, compare what it says in the New Testament, and they will agree that the intent of the writers is that Jesus is the promised Messiah. This may not be believed, but it is undeniable that this is the intent. Understanding the parallel, it next says, “You come, we should kill him.” Understanding the favorable position of the son in relation to the inheritance, they determine to kill him as well. The parable is given by Jesus. Jesus is God incarnate. Because this is true, it would be ridiculous for Jesus to say that the servants would receive Him favorably and then continue the parable with these words. It would demonstrate a complete inconsistency in the words of the parable, and in the Person who is speaking the words, to make a comparison to God while knowing that the comparison is faulty. Despite knowing that the son would be rejected, the house master sent his son. With the agronomists deciding to kill him, they next give the reason for doing so, saying, “and we should retain the ‘inheritance, his'.” Because of the obvious difficulty presented in the previous verse, the Pulpit commentary says of these words – “It would have been a wild and ignorant scheme of the husbandmen to consider that by murdering the heir they could obtain and hold possession of the vineyard. Here the parable bursts from the allegorical form, and becomes history and prophecy.” Rather, the whole parable parallels the historical nature of Jesus' words. God foreknew that when He sent His Son into the nation of Israel while under the Law of Moses, the leaders would kill Him. Despite knowing in advance that it was so, He sent Him anyway. Life application: This parable, like the other parables given by Jesus, is given to show exacting truths about what God is doing in redemptive history. It would make no sense for Jesus to present a parable that didn't match what would be borne out in literal history. If Jesus' intent in the previous verse was for the laborers to show respect, esteem, or honor to the son, there are other words in the New Testament that would reflect that sentiment. Instead, He purposefully chose a word that carries a dual sense to reveal the fact that, despite His foreknowledge of what would occur, He still sent Jesus to accomplish the work intended for Him, including being rejected by Israel's leaders and being crucified. This reveals the very heart of God for the people of the world. It also reveals the determination of Jesus, who had already said several times that He would be treated shamefully and killed by those in Jerusalem. Despite all that was to come upon Him, He faithfully and resolutely went forward to do what needed to be done to restore us to God. Lord God, thank You for what You have done for us in the sending of Jesus. The cross of Christ is truly the most precious symbol of love and reconciliation that could ever be. May we only boast in what He has done, never attempting to set aside the grace poured out on us there. Yes, may our hope rest in Jesus alone. Amen.

Phil Haslanger has spent decades straddling two worlds that don't always trust each other: journalism and the church. In this episode of The UpWords Podcast, host John Terrill sits down with the longtime Capital Times editor turned ordained pastor for an in-person conversation recorded at Upper House in Madison, Wisconsin, as part of a summer series spotlighting local leaders whose faith shapes their public work.Over a 35-year career at The Capital Times, Phil worked as a reporter, city editor, editorial page editor, and managing editor before entering ordained ministry with the United Church of Christ in 2007. He talks about growing up in an almost entirely white Marinette, Wisconsin, how his image of God has shifted from "someone at a control panel" to what he calls "the force of love in the universe," and what a career built on journalistic skepticism taught him about pastoral care. The conversation also covers Phil's work building an interfaith network of Fitchburg-area churches, his award-winning advocacy against domestic violence, the line between prophetic public witness and partisan politics, and where he sees both progress and failure in how the American press covers religion — including a candid take on AI's growing and risky role in newsrooms.ABOUT OUR GUESTPhil Haslanger has spent his career — and his second career — straddling two worlds: journalism and ministry. A UW–Madison graduate (BA in sociology, 1971; MA in journalism, 1973), he spent 35 years at The Capital Times in Madison as a reporter, city editor, editorial page editor, and managing editor, and for years wrote a column on the intersection of faith and politics.Phil grew up Catholic in Marinette, Wisconsin, and briefly considered the priesthood before coming to UW–Madison to study sociology. In 2000, he and his wife left the Catholic Church for the United Church of Christ; he entered the UCC's lay pastor program, was ordained in 2007, and served for a decade as pastor of Memorial United Church of Christ in Fitchburg before retiring in 2017. He later served as a parish associate at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison, retiring again in 2024.He was inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Association's Hall of Fame in 2021, named a distinguished alumnus of the UW–Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2022, and received the Governor's Council on Domestic Abuse's annual justice award in 2015 for mobilizing local faith communities to support victims of domestic violence. What does ministry look like when your pulpit is a newspaper column? In this episode of Tiny Pulpit Talks, Rev. T. J. FitzGerald sits down with Rev. Mara Richards Bim — pastor, spiritual director, and journalist — for a conversation about practicing faith outside the sanctuary. Mara traces her path from founding a Dallas theater company, to seminary, to breaking some of the most consequential immigration stories in North Texas. Along the way, she and TJ find the thread connecting the minister and the reporter: the discipline of sitting with hard things and refusing to look away. They talk about: Cry Havoc Theater, and how interview-based storytelling led to journalism Writing for Baptist News Global as a Clemons Fellow Tracing attempted property purchases in Hutchins, Texas, back to the federal government The movement of detained people through Dallas Love Field — and why that story hasn't gained the same traction What clergy witnessed together on the front lines in Minneapolis Covering CPAC, and the toll of bearing witness to hate Why spiritual care has to include care for the body Faith voices in the public square, and reclaiming ground from Christian nationalism How any calling — not just ministry — can be a place where your faith shows up About Rev. Mara Richards Bim: Rev. Mara Richards Bim is a pastor, writer and spiritual director. Mara graduated from SMU's Perkins School of Theology in 2024 with a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction. After graduation, she served as the Program Director at Faith Commons. Mara was ordained to the Gospel Ministry by Royal Lane in 2025. Previously, Mara had a 20-year career as an award-winning theatre artist. She founded the nationally acclaimed Cry Havoc Theater Company which operated in Dallas from 2014-2023. In 2020 Mara received the Holloway Family Foundation's Visionary Leadership Award and in 2021 she was named one of D Magazine's "78 Women Changing the Face of Dallas." Mara is a Clemons Fellow at Baptist News Global where she regularly writes about the intersection of religion and politics, focusing on the threats posed by Christian fascism. She serves on the Leadership Council of Texas Impact and is also an active volunteer with Christians Against Christian Nationalism. She is the first Justice & Advocacy Fellow in the newly-launched Prophetic Leadership Program at Royal Lane. Mara and her family reside in Plano, Texas. In this homily The Rev. Dr. James E. Taylor, Rector of St.George Episcopal Church, discusses the meaning of the parable of the weeds in today's Gospel. He says that weeds are a reality of life. Weeds serve as a distraction and keep us from growing our faith. Through this parable Jesus isoffering guidance on how to live in a complex world. God is about loving others and that should be what we are about also. To live in optimism and hope is to live the life of the Holy Spirit.Send comments to: musingsonfaith@gmail.com.

In this week's summertime rerun, Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye discuss the (still) hot topic of women in ministry within the Church. Throughout Christian history, with the increased institutionalization of the Church came very set patterns of misogyny. And certain passages of Scripture have been used to fuel both sides of this debate as to what role women can and should take within the Church. Episode Links Dr. White has written several blogs that may serve as helpful additions to today's conversation, such as a blog titled “Beth Moore in the Pulpit,” in which he explores the complementarian vs. egalitarian views held by many within the Church. And one of the most foundational things Dr. White laid out was to follow “The Biblical Model of Leadership.” The conversation also touched on Jesus and how He viewed women. Check out this blog simply titled “Sexism” to explore more about this. Also mentioned was the letter of I Timothy in the New Testament and how that has impacted many churches' views on women in ministry. Dr. White mentioned that a good book on this is The Message of 1 Timothy & Titus by John R.W. Stott. And at the beginning of the discussion you heard Alexis mention a conversation that took place in a Christianity Today podcast titled “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.” While the entire podcast had a lot to contribute to the topic of women in the Church, Episode 13 in particular includes an insightful interview with the CEO of CT, Tim Dalrymple. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode. “What's Buggin' You” segment for Thursday 7-16-26
I've got an extremely busy week down in Mobile, Alabama, and so I'm re-sharing the John MacArthur memorial podcast I did last July after he passed away. I begin with a few memories of running into MacArthur's writing and preaching, followed by a clip of what may have been his shortest exposition ever: Hebrews 13:3. I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. Follow and/or message me on Twitter/X (@chinaadventures) where I post (among other things) daily reminders to pray for China. You can also email me @ bfwesten at gmail dot com. In this homily The Rev. Dr. James E. Taylor, Rector of St.George Episcopal Church, discusses the parable of the sower in today's Gospel.
