Patriotism, the Pulpit, and the Pendulum: Where Do We Stand? In this conclusion to our series on patriotism and the church, we tackle the big questions: Does patriotism belong in the church? What does healthy patriotism look like? And must you be patriotic to be a good Christian? From personal stories to biblical reflections—including a powerful look at Jeremiah 29—we explore how gratitude, love for country, and allegiance to Christ can coexist. The conversation isn't always comfortable, but it's honest, thoughtful, and rooted in a gospel-centered worldview.Whether you've been nodding along or wrestling with what we've said, we invite you to lean in for one last roundtable as we seek to live faithfully in our nation without losing sight of our higher calling. The IRS has ruled that it would not be a violation of a church's tax exempt status if it were to openly endorse a specific political candidate — by name. But just because you CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean that you SHOULD do something.
This week, a court ruling overturned the 1954 Johnson Amendment which prohibited nonprofits from endorsing or opposing candidates if they want to remain tax-exempt. Dr. Jonny sees this as a major win for podcasts like Pushback, for free speech, and for the body of Christ in America! However, It is only a huge win if we utilize the pulpit, our influence, our love, our courage and the spiritual insight given to His ministers!

Title: Preaching for Life: Kevin Sanders on Clarity and Conviction In this episode, Kevin Sanders joins Mike Neglia for a focused and practical conversation on the art and discipline of preaching. Together, they explore what it means to preach with clarity, conviction, and care. Kevin shares how his theological training, personal experiences, and missionary years in the Philippines have shaped his approach to preaching. The conversation touches on the challenge of crafting a clear main point, addressing sensitive topics without being crass, and maintaining pastoral integrity in the pulpit.Mike and Kevin also reflect on the legacy of Dr Jim Shaddix, the importance of sermon focus, and how preachers can continue to grow in both skill and spiritual depth. This episode offers both encouragement and instruction for anyone committed to the ministry of biblical proclamation.Topics Covered Include:Developing and maintaining clarity in sermon structurePreaching difficult or delicate topics with sensitivity and faithfulnessUsing technology (like PowerPoint) without letting it dominate the messageThe impact of mentors and theological education on preachingAvoiding crudeness while remaining biblically honestThe importance of continual growth and reflection in preachingGuest Bio:Kevin Sanders is the pastor of Apollo Heights Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas, and the author of Preaching for Life: A Pastor's Journey of Biblical Proclamation. Originally from Pinson, Alabama, Kevin sensed a call to ministry as a teenager, eventually earning a Master of Divinity and serving for over a decade as a missionary to college students in the Philippines. Since returning to the US, he has devoted himself to pastoral ministry, with a particular focus on expository preaching, pastoral integrity, and helping others grow in their preaching craft. His new book Preaching for Life draws from his personal story, theological training, and years of preaching to offer wisdom and encouragement for preachers at every stage.Resources Mentioned:Preaching for Life by Kevin Sanders https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F597P9CM?ref_=pe_93986420_774957520Power in the Pulpit by Jim Shaddix and Jerry Vines : https://www.jerryvines.com/store/books/power-in-the-pulpit/Expositional Leadership: Shepherding God's People from the Pulpit By R. Daily Study: What holds most Christians in business back from maximal success is this nagging question in the back of their mind: Is pursuing money okay? This uncertainty has them charging less money than they should or wanting to give their products and services away for free. Due to worldly and churchly pressures, we are inundated with messages that say making money is bad, from Hollywood to the Pulpit. They see the pursuit of profit in business as a necessary evil at best, and at worst they see pursuing profit as taking from society and the poor. There are very few things that the world and the church agree on, and it seems like that they both have deemed pursuing profit as bad. However, this thought process will hold you back from fulfilling what God has called you to do in business. Upon coming out as transgender in 1999, she was reputed to be the first “transsexual” ordained as clergy in the Anglican Communion (although she regards that designation as rightwing hyperbole).

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE PULPIT: 6/8 Righteous Strife: How Warring Religious Nationalists Forged Lincoln's Union Hardcover – by Richard Carwardine (Author) 1867 The first major account of the American Civil War to give full weight to the central role played by religion, reframing the conflict through Abraham Lincoln's contentious appeals to faith-based nationalism How did slavery figure in God's plan? Was it the providential role of government to abolish this sin and build a righteous nation? Or did such a mission amount to “religious tyranny” and “pulpit politics,” in an effort to strip the southern states of their God-given rights? In 1861, in an already fracturing nation, the tensions surrounding this moral quandary cracked the United States in half, and even formed rifts within the North itself, where anti slavery religious nationalists butted heads with conservative religious nationalists over their visions for America's future. At the center of this melee stood Abraham Lincoln, who would turn to his own faith for guidance, proclaiming more days of national fasting and thanksgiving than any other president before or since. These pauses for spiritual reflection provided the inspirational rhetoric and ideological fuel that sustained the war.
