Revelation Dates: August 1831 Revelation Places: Jackson County, Missouri; Banks of the Missouri River; Kirtland Ohio Section 60 - Historical Background: After being in Jackson County, Missouri for only 3 weeks, Joseph Smith and other church leaders had accomplished much, including holding a church conference, the settlement of newly arriving saints, identified the site of the New Jerusalem and dedicated the new temple site, dedicated the land for the inheritance of the saints, and received several new revelations. Now, the Lord asks Joseph and the leaders of the church to return to Kirtland, Ohio. Recap: The leaders of the church are instructed to return to Kirtland, Ohio. They are reprimanded for not preaching the gospel on their journey from Kirtland, because of the fear of wicked men. They are commanded to preach along the journey back, some by St. Louis and others by Cincinnati. Don't idle away time nor bury your talents. Section 61 - Historical Background: As Joseph and 10 others returned to Kirtland, they travelled the Missouri River by canoe. Near tragedy struck on day 3 when one canoe capsized and Sidney Rigdon nearly drowned. W. W. Phelps witnessed the destroyer upon the waters while the others heard the awful, satanic noises but did not witness it with their eyes. This greatly troubled the group and Joseph sought counsel from the Lord. Recap: The brethren are chastened for trying to return home too swiftly rather than preaching along the way. Sidney Gilbert and WW Phelps are excused to return immediately home [so they can fulfil their calling to purchase a printing press and transfer it to Independence]. In these last days, the waters are cursed by John the Beloved, and the land is blessed by the Lord. The saints are to journey by land unless the canal is available. Be of good cheer, I am in your midst. Section 62 - Historical Background: On the journey to Cincinnati, Joseph met some of the Elders on their way to Independence which was joyous to everyone. Recap: The Lord is watching the elders on their trek to Zion and is pleased with their testimonies. They are to continue to Zion and then return home, preaching along the way. Section 63 - Historical Background: Upon the return to Kirtland, Joseph, Sidney Rigdon and Oliver Cowdery were immediately engulfed by many questions by the saints and new converts. Joseph inquired of the Lord regarding the purchase of lands and many other concerns and questions. Recap: The wicked and rebellious in the church must repent and become humble or will otherwise be destroyed. Seek not for signs, for they only come by faith. Those guilty of sexual sin must repent or will not be worthy of the Spirit and be destroyed. The obedient will have God's Spirit. The saints are to assemble in Zion, but not in haste lest the inhabitants there become overwhelmed. The Lord prophesies the persecution that will come and war and bloodshed. The Morley farm should be sold and the money sent to Zion. Whitney should keep his store in Kirtland for now. Glorious times are to come, yet the wicked will be plucked from the church. God will not be mocked.

Revelation Dates: August 1-7, 1831 Revelation Places: Jackson County, Missouri Section 58 - Historical Background: In a previous revelation, contained in section 57, the Lord set up the prospect for a Zion society. To achieve the promises from a Zion society the saints were required to achieve sufficient righteousness. However, the Lord knew what would ultimately happen and tried to prepare the saints for the trials and harsh reality that would soon come upon them. Joseph Smith had recently arrived in Jackson County and received this revelation. Recap: After many great tribulations come many great blessings. The saints are laying the foundation for a future Zion society. They must be loyal citizens and obey the laws of the land. Members of the Lord's church must be diligent and anxiously engaged in good, without being compelled or commanded in every detail. Several church leaders are counselled and reprimanded. The saints are commanded to raise the needed funds to purchase lands round about (which unfortunately was not sufficiently obeyed); otherwise there will be bloodshed. A temple spot will be dedicated. Section 59 - Historical Background: As the saints poured into Jackson County from Ohio and elsewhere, they were anxious for counsel from the Lord in the building of Zion. With the convenience of the Prophet Joseph, many had questions for the Lord that could have been answered directly from the scriptures. Recap: Faithful saints will be blessed by the Lord, whether in life or in death. Love the Lord by obeying His commandments. The Lord emphasizes obedience to basic commandments, with special emphasis on the Sabbath day. Obey with cheerfulness and a glad heart. Nothing offends God more than disobedience and not confessing God's hand in all things.

Revelation Dates: May – July 1831 Revelation Places: Ohio and Missouri Section 51 - Historical Background: As the many converts from New York came to Kirtland Ohio, Bishop Partridge had been assigned to organize and care for them according to the law of consecration, described in section 42. Needing assistance from the Lord, the bishop asked Joseph to seek further guidance from the Lord. Recap: The bishop is to appoint each family an appropriate portion of property according to his specific needs. Once appointed, a deed of ownership must be given him. A storehouse of money and goods should be kept by the bishop for the needs and wants of the people. Section 52 - Historical Background: A church conference was called in Kirtland which about 2,000 members attended. The events included ordaining several High Priests. During the conference, Joseph Smith rebuked evil spirits residing in 2 men. Recap: The next conference is announced to be held in Missouri, which must be consecrated for the faithful. 28 Elders are called on missions to Missouri, two by two. The Lord gives the pattern necessary to be a righteous missionary. Section 53 - Historical Background: After calling all the elders on missions in the previous section, Sidney Gilbert was not included. Hurt by this, Gilbert approached the Lord in prayer and then to Joseph for a revelation of what work he can do while the others went to Missouri. Recap: Sidney Gilbert's prayers have been heard. He is to forsake the world, become an Elder and preach repentance. He is to accompany Joseph Smith to Missouri. Section 54 - Historical Background: The saints from Colesville, New York contracted with Leman Copley to stay on his property. Copley was to consecrate his property to the church, but he apostatized and broke his covenant. Joseph sought counsel from the Lord. Recap: It would be better for those Saints who break covenants with the Lord to have been drowned in the sea. But those who honor their covenants will be rewarded. The saints are to flee Ohio and move to Missouri. Be patient in tribulation. Section 55 - Historical Background: William W. Phelps was converted through the Book of Mormon and sought a revelation from the Lord as to what work he should do. Recap: Phelps is commanded to be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost and be ordained an Elder to preach repentance. He is assigned to Missouri to assist Oliver Cowdery as printer. Section 56 - Historical Background: As Thomas B. Marsh was preparing to go to Missouri as commanded, his indolent companion, Ezra Thayre, was not enthusiastic. Joseph inquires what the Lord would have him do. Recap: Those who pretend to be saints but are rebellious will not be saved but will be cut off from the church. Marsh is given a new companion. All members are called to repentance. Section 57 - Historical Background: The focus of the saints was on gathering to Zion in Jackson County, Missouri. The town of Independence Missouri was a backward, frontier town of about 3,000 people. The Lord announces the place for Zion and the temple. Recap: The land of Missouri is appointed as the center place of Zion and the New Jerusalem. The exact place of the temple is appointed. The saints are to purchase all the regions of the land. Assignments are made to various church leaders. Speed is of the essence. Gathering saints will be granted land according to the law of consecration.

Revelation Dates: May 1831 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 49 - Historical Background: A man named Leman Copley was a recent convert from a religious group called the Shakers, or the Shaking Quakers. He was so excited about the gospel that he wanted to present it to his former church members located near Cleveland, Ohio. The founder of the Shakers was a woman named Ann Lee, who had once been involved in a miserable marriage. Much of her religion was built around her opposition to marriage and the relations that went with it. “Mother Lee” was regarded as the returned Christ, meat was forbidden to eat, baptism was unnecessary and a celibate life was required. Before sending missionaries to this group, Joseph asked the Lord how to approach the concepts of these people.    Recap: The Lord calls Sidney Rigdon and Parley P. Pratt to teach the Shakers, including Leman Copley, so Leman can convince his former congregation the truths of the Gospel. If they accept it, they shall be saved. Otherwise they shall be damned. The Lord specifies true gospel concepts to be taught: The Lord has not yet come the second time; Believe on Jesus Christ; Repent; Be Baptized and receive the Holy Ghost; Marriage is ordained of God; Meat is ordained for the use of man if not wasted; and Christ will return in the heavens – not as a woman or a man walking the earth. [Note: This missionary effort was completely rejected by the Shakers, and even Leman Copley abandoned the church, breaking promises and covenants he made previously.]  Section 50 - Historical Background: Numerous converts were flooding into the church, making it difficult to manage the many new branches spreading abroad. Especially troublesome were the perverted beliefs many converts brought into the church from their former religion. A false and lying spirit was beginning to infiltrate the church, including false visions, prophesies and manifestations of spiritual possession. Some church leaders became concerned and approached Joseph to inquire of the Lord. Together, they all knelt in prayer and Joseph received this revelation.  Recap: There are many false spirits in the world, intending to deceive the world and especially the saints. Within the church there are some hypocrites (pretenders) who have deceived some, but they will be detected and cut off. The Elders are to preach according to the Spirit of God – if by any other means it is not of God. If the Spirit they receive does not edify, it is a false spirit. That which is of God is light, to chase away the darkness. If one cannot discern whether the spirit be good or evil, ask God. If it is evil, humbly but firmly denounce that spirit.

Revelation Dates: March 8, 1831 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 46 - Historical Background: New converts were now pouring into Kirtland, Ohio. Many had preconceived ideas from their former churches how weekly services should be held. Joseph inquires of the Lord how He wants it done.  Recap: The elders attending the meeting should preside and conduct the meeting according to the Spirit. All people should be welcomed to attend, but only worthy members should partake of the sacrament. All members should seek earnestly the best gifts of the Spirit. Some of these gifts are to witness of Jesus Christ, having a believing heart, strong leadership, discernment, wisdom, knowledge, healing, faith, prophecy, and tongues. All gifts come from God for the benefit of mankind.  Section 47 - Historical Background: Up to this time, Oliver Cowdery had been acting as Church historian. Joseph Smith called John Whitmer to replace Oliver and John agreed to do it, but only if Joseph Smith received divine guidance from the Lord to call him to the work.  Recap: John Whitmer is called to be the recorder of church history and additionally to replace Sidney Rigdon to transcribe revelations and future revisions of the scriptures.  Section 48 - Historical Background: A large number of new converts were about to arrive from New York. A member named Leman Copley made a covenant allowing the arriving saints to occupy a piece of his land. Copley apostatized and broke his covenant, forcing these weary saints off of his land. Other saints were occupying a piece of land owned by Isaac Morley. Joseph inquired of the Lord how to acquire lands for the many incoming Saints.  Recap: Temporary quarters are necessary for the incoming Saints until the church moves west. If necessary, purchase or lease some land, but conserve funds for purchasing land in Zion. The Elders will be sent to Missouri and it will be revealed to them where Zion will be established and these lands should be purchased, laying the foundation for the City of Zion. The bishop will have the responsibility to assign properties to each family as their needs require.

Revelation Date: March 7, 1831 Revelation Place: Kirtland, Ohio Section 45 - Historical Background: The Lord was well aware of the perils that were pouring out upon the Saints. Joseph lamented, “Many false reports, lies, and foolish stories were published and circulated in every direction, to prevent people from investigating the work.” During these times of slander and abuse, the Lord provided revelations of comfort and peace, including section 45, which was received, as Joseph wrote, “to the joy of the Saints who had to struggle against every thing that prejudice and wickedness could invent.”. Recap: Addressed to the entire church, the Lord encourages the Saints to retain their repentance so they qualify for the mercy of forgiveness through the atonement. Soften your heart that the following revelations will be a light in the darkness. All of God's prophecies must be fulfilled, just as the destruction of the temple in old Jerusalem and the scattering of the Jews was fulfilled. There will be coming wars, commotions, fear, hate and desolating plagues that will cover the land. There will be earthquakes, desolations and warfare. The wicked will curse God and die, but the righteous will not be moved. Be not troubled because the promises to the righteous shall all be fulfilled. Christ's coming will cleanse the earth from evil. Gog and Magog will be destroyed. The Jews will see and accept Him as their Messiah. The righteous will be resurrected and Satan will be bound. The Lord prophesies of imminent war, probably the Civil War. Gather the Saints and assemble to the New Jerusalem – Zion, and sing the songs of everlasting joy.

Revelation Dates: February 1831 Revelation Place: Kirtland, Ohio Section 41 - Historical Background: Arriving in Kirtland Ohio, Joseph found many of the saints practicing “strange notions” brought with the new converts from their previous church backgrounds. As these false precepts and traditions were creeping in among the church, Joseph asked the Lord what to do. Recap: Blessed are they who follow God's commandments and cursed are those who don't. The Elders are to gather together and God will declare His law clarifying His will. Joseph is to receive housing and Edward Partridge is to be ordained a Bishop, the first bishop of the church, to administer full time the temporal affairs of the church.  Section 42 - Historical Background: The early members pooled their property in an attempt to mimic “all things in common” as described in Acts, also known as Christian Communism. This counterfeit to God's Law of Consecration became so contentious that Joseph approached the Lord to seek the true meaning of “all things in common.” This section became known as “The Law” and was one of the first revelations to be published.  Recap: The strength of God's church is in the obedience of its members. The first priority of the Elders is to do missionary work, two by two, as ordained by authority and then guided by the Sprit. Living the ten commandments is emphasized. The Law of Consecration is explained. Other laws of God are discussed, such as the law of work, healing, government, morality and judgement.  Section 43 - Historical Background: Shortly after Joseph arrives in Kirtland, a woman by the name of Hubble announced herself as a prophetess who impresses some of the Elders, including Sidney Rigdon. Joseph declares her an imposter but some remained impressed by her. Joseph approached the Lord concerning the discord.  Recap: The Lord reminds the church there is none other authorized to transmit the will of the Lord than Joseph until the Lord announces a successor. The Elders are to be obedient, teach and edify one another so they may be sent forth to preach in righteousness.  Section 44 - Historical Background: The church was rapidly growing and the Lord knew that great opposition was also rapidly growing. It was revealed to Joseph to prepare the saints for the upcoming crisis by assembling all the Elders in a conference for strength and instruction.          Recap: The Elders must be gathered from all areas to hold a June conference in Kirtland, where the Lord promises to pour out His spirit. Missionary work must be accelerated and many will be converted. These must be organized according to the laws of the land. Care must be given to those who are poor and needy.

Revelation Dates: December 1830-January 1831 Revelation Place: Fayette, New York Section 37 - Historical Background: Sidney Rigdon had been told earlier that new scriptures would be coming. As Joseph's scribe, they received the book of Moses. The Lord then interrupts the translation and commands that the headquarters of the church be moved from Fayette, New York to Ohio. Recap: Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are interrupted during the translation of the bible and the Book of Moses to focus on moving the church headquarters to Ohio. Each family is to choose for themselves according to their own best judgement.  Section 38 - Historical Background: The church holds its 3rd and last conference in Fayette, New York. As part of the conference, Joseph wanted to provide answers to the Saints' questions why the Lord was requiring them to sell their farms and homes and move to Ohio. Joseph asks the Lord and with Sidney Rigdon as scribe, he receives this revelation.  Recap: The Lord reminds the Saints that it is He, and not Joseph Smith, who leads His church. The Lord protects the righteous who will always overcome, and He chains the wicked who will be doomed. Fear not, for the plot of the wicked will fail. He enters into a covenant with the church to provide a land of promise and inheritance, as long as the saints are faithful and obedient. There must be unity among the saints, organize themselves and gather in Ohio for safety.  Section 39 - Historical Background: Immediately after the church conference in Fayette, a 40-year-long Baptist minister named James Covel was so moved that he committed to Joseph that he would obey any commandment given him. Joseph inquired of the Lord what He desired from Covel.  Recap: Only those who receive the Lord's church can receive Him. Now is the time to accept His Gospel, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost and embark in gathering the saints in Ohio. Preach with a loud voice, baptize and give them the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Section 40 - Historical Background: Despite the solemn promise and covenant to follow God's command (see section 39), James Covel deliberately refused and turned his back on the Lord and His saints. When Joseph learned of Covel's blatant rejection, he asked the Lord for instructions.    Recap: Though the original covenant and heart of James Covel was right before the Lord, the adversary destroyed his conviction and therefore by breaking his promise Covel lost everything the Lord had promised him. Joseph is not to concern himself with James Covel any longer for the Lord will deal with him.

Section 30 - Historical Background: Following the second conference of the Church at Fayette, the Lord provided revelations to several new converts who were anxious to know what God would have them do. This revelation was to three of the Whitmer brothers, David, Peter Jr. and John. Recap: David Whitmer, one of the three witnesses, is admonished for fearing man more than God and for not giving heed to the Spirit. Therefore he is to remain home and ponder upon his situation. Peter is called on a mission to the Lamanites with Oliver Cowdery, who will be the senior in the companionship. John was called on a mission to declare the gospel within the area and was counselled not to fear man. Section 31 - Historical Background: Thomas B Marsh was a recent convert from Massachusetts who was baptized in August 1830 by David Whitmer. In September he attended the conference in Fayette and received this personal revelation from Joseph. Recap: The Lord is pleased with the dedication of Thomas B Marsh and he is promised blessings for him and his family. He is called on a mission to people whose hearts will be opened by God. Branches of the church will be established by Thomas. He is not assigned to a specific area but is to follow the Spirit where to go and preach. Section 32 - Historical Background: Parley P Pratt was a former minister who read the Book of Mormon and knew it was true. He was baptized in early September, 1830. He immediately went to his brother Orson who immediately accepted the gospel. Within a month Parley received this revelation along with Ziba Peterson. Recap: Parley was called on a mission to the Lamanites along with Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer. Ziba Peterson was also called to join them. They are reassured that God will be in their midst. Section 33 - Historical Background: Ezra Thayre and Northrop Sweet were mediocre members and lacked in zeal, yet asked for this revelation pertaining to their purpose. Recap: Ezra and Northrop are called to preach. The Lord encourages them go forth and open their mouths. Faith, repentance, baptism by water and fire constitutes the rock of the restored church. They are to use the Book of Mormon as their manual. Section 34 - Historical Background: At the age of 19, Orson Pratt was introduced to the gospel by his brother Parley. He immediately embraced the doctrine and was baptized. He traveled to Fayette to meet the Prophet Joseph and received this revelation. Recap: Christ is a light which the wicked don't comprehend. Orson is called to preach to the wicked before Christ comes again, which will be quickly. Section 35 - Historical Background: Sidney Rigdon was a Baptist minister who became discouraged and moved to the Campbellite church. He was introduced to the Book of Mormon and after 2 weeks was baptized. After meeting Joseph he received this personal revelation, including the commandment to be Joseph's scribe. As a result of Sidney's fulfillment of this revelation, we have much of the recorded Doctrine and Covenants. Recap: Sidney Rigdon, like John the Baptist, has prepared the way for the Lord. God calls upon the weak and unlearned to respond to His call. The Lord testifies to Sidney of the prophetic calling of Joseph. Sidney is to watch over Joseph and support him. He is commanded to be Joseph's scribe and forsake him not. Section 36 - Historical Background: Edward Partridge arrived in Fayette with Sidney Rigdon and wanted to meet Joseph to decide for himself if he was a prophet. When Sidney introduced him the spirit immediately confirmed to Edward that Joseph was indeed a prophet of God. Edward desired immediate baptism but Joseph needed rest and baptized him the following day. Sidney asked Joseph for the Lord's guidance and the following revelation was given for Edward (see Section 35 for Sidney's revelation). Recap: Sidney Rigdon is instructed to lay hands upon Edward and confirm him a member and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost. Edward is then called to preach the Gospel, as are all those who desire to be sent forth with a singleness of heart.

In one of the most exhaustive, scripture based presentations on the Atonement, respected gospel scholar W. Cleon Skousen opens our understanding of the majesty and breadth of Jesus' sacrifice and how we can apply the principles of the Atonement in our lives. As stated by Elder Bruce R. McConkie, "The doctrine of the Atonement embraces, sustains, supports, and gives life and force to all other gospel doctrines. It is the foundation upon which all truth rests..." So what is the meaning of the Atonement? And why is the Atonement even necessary? At the young age of 17, Brother Skousen embarks on his mission to England with these questions in mind. With the guidance of his mission president, Apostle John A. Widtsoe, and after decades of scriptural study, he discovers the answers to these profound questions. Presented in a simple and beautiful manner, Dr. Skousen lays out the findings of his lifelong search in this popular address given at a mission conference in Dallas, Texas. He presents the answers to the Meaning of the Atonement, why it is necessary, the source of God's power and the key to understanding how the Atonement can become a reality in your own personal life and why it is so vital to your personal salvation and exaltation.

Section 29 - Historical Background:  After Joseph and Emma arrived in Fayette from Harmony, the saints were anxious for the upcoming second conference of the church. Many of the new members had questions. Six elders were in the presence of Joseph when he received this new magnificent revelation. This was not a revelation of simple concepts like received in previous revelations, but was instead a complex, layer upon layer, doctrinal and apocalyptic revelation. Recap: It is through Christ's mercy that our sins are atoned. The elect - or foreordained - of Christ will be gathered in America for safety. There will be a day of tribulation and desolation prior to Christ's second coming. Many great signs in heaven and earth will precede His coming. Terrible plagues will pour down on the gentiles to humble them unto repentance, otherwise they will be burned by fire. At the end of the millennium, after the resurrection of all the dead, wickedness will return again and the earth will be consumed and become a new, paradisical earth. These doctrines are given in response to questions in the minds of the six elders present. All of God's commands are spiritual. Satan rebelled against God by attempting to destroy our agency and was therefore cast down, spending his days tempting God's children to prevent them from returning to God. They who resist temptation and believe in Christ will be raised in immortality unto eternal life.

Section 27 - Historical Background: It had been four months since the organization of the church and the saints had been partaking of the sacrament using bread and wine. After the baptism of Emma Smith along with others, a meeting was held for the confirmation to take place followed by the partaking of the sacrament. However, there was no wine available for the sacrament so Joseph set out to obtain some. He had not gone far when he was met by a Heavenly messenger who gave him this revelation directly from the Savior.    Recap: The emblems used in the Lord's sacrament can be something other than bread and wine as long as they are partaken with an eye single to the glory of God and done in remembrance of the body and blood of Christ.  Section 28 - Historical Background: August of 1830 was a challenging time for both Joseph and Emma. The lies and persecution toward Joseph in Harmony reached the heart of Emma's father who now refused any further refuge for Joseph and Emma. Harsh persecution forced Joseph and Emma to flee Harmony and move into the residence of the Whitmer's home in Fayette. No sooner had they arrived when they learned that Hyrum Page, one of the eight witnesses, had claimed to be receiving revelations through a certain stone. Some members, including Oliver Cowdery, had been deceived by these claims. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received this revelation, directed to the deceived Oliver Cowdery.  Recap: The Lord declares that only His appointed prophet has the keys to receive revelation for His church, for all things must be done in order. He commands Oliver Cowdery to remedy the deceit which has spread due to the stone used by Hiram Page, and to counsel with Hiram privately. Section 23 - Historical Background: Shortly after the organization of the church, probably between April 6 to 11, 1830, Joseph was approached by five faithful men desiring to know their respective duties in the new church. These five individuals included Joseph's father, Joseph Smith Sr, two brothers, Hyrum and Samuel Smith, Oliver Cowdery and Joseph Knight, Sr. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received this revelation. Recap: Oliver Cowdery was addressed first and warned against pride; urged to witness to others the truth; Hyrum was called to strengthen the church; Samuel was to work within the church for strengthening the members but not yet to preach outside the church; Joseph Knight Sr was also called to serve in the Kingdom forever and pray vocally and encouraged to join the church and take up his cross. Section 24 - Historical Background: Immediately following the organization of the church, persecution came quickly and became intense. Joseph was harassed with arrests and had to evade mobs for safety. Joseph had begun to receive revelations concerning the book of Genesis which is recorded in the Pearl of Great Price, book of Moses. During these times of persecution and revelation, Joseph received the following revelation. Recap: Joseph is encouraged to magnify his office and to be patient in his afflictions; he is to seek safety among the members of the church; Oliver Cowdery is to be diligent in declaring the gospel, thinking nothing of himself, and he will receive strength. Section 25 - Historical Background: The persecutions spewing against her husband Joseph had been a great trial for Emma Smith. Her uncle was a minister responsible for much of the persecution against Joseph, especially during the translation of the plates. This persecution drove Joseph and Emma from Harmony to Fayette, NY. Arrested and nearly mobbed several times, Joseph had to constantly flee. During this time, Emma had been faithful and supportive despite trials and hardships. Never had Emma seen the Gold Plates yet she didn't complain. Now, however, Mary Whitmore had the privilege of seeing the plates. Feeling slighted, the Lord gave Emma this strengthening and comforting revelation calling Emma an “elect lady.” Recap: Emma is forgiven for her sins and is called an elect lady; she is to be Joseph's scribe and to compile a hymnbook for the members. All members are called to beware of pride and to keep the commandments. Section 26 - Historical Background: During the weeks since the publication of the Book of Mormon, Samuel Smith had been diligently trying to get people to buy the sacred book. Since there was nothing but hostility around Palmyra, he went 15 miles to the town of Mendon. Finally he returned home with all but 2 of the original books. He gave one of the books to a widow and the other went to a respected minister John Green. Reverend Green read the book, believed it and eagerly passed it on to Phineas Young and then to Brigham Young and Heber C Kimball, all reading and finding belief and conversion. This resulted in the uniting of converts and a strong branch of the church near Mendon. Meanwhile, Joseph, Oliver and John Whitmer were in Harmony wondering what they could do to exert themselves, and the following short revelation was given. Recap: The Lord tells Joseph, Oliver and John Whitmer to get involved in 4 things, namely the fervent study of the scriptures, the organization of the branch in Colesville, perform the essential work on their farmland and then to prepare for the next church conference. The importance of common consent is given.

Section 20 - Historical Background: Following the first vision to the young boy Joseph Smith, God gradually proceeded to work towards the establishment of his church. The angel Moroni was sent to Joseph, then to the hidden gold plates to be translated and published as the Book of Mormon; the Aaronic Priesthood was restored followed by the Melchizedek priesthood. This section lays the foundation for the setting up of the governing laws of the Kingdom of God in these latter days. Recap: The precise day is given when the organization of the church is to occur; the names of the first 2 elders are announced; duties of the members of the church and of the quorums of the priesthood; specific wording of the baptismal and sacrament prayers are given. Section 21 - Historical Background: In fulfillment of God's commandment (see section 20), on April 6, 1830, the leaders of the church met together at the home of Peter Whitmer Sr to organize and establish the church in accordance to the laws of the nation. Six men were required to sign the corporate papers to give the church official status in the state of New York. The log cabin was crowded with families and friends who all raised their hands in approval of Joseph Smith as the first Elder of the Church and Oliver Cowdery as the second, and both as presiding officers. After these formalities were completed and the papers signed, the people traveled 6 miles to Seneca Lake. Those who desired to become members of the church were baptized. After returning to the Whitmer home in Fayette, this revelation was received. Recap: Records need to be maintained in the church; Joseph Smith will be called a seer, translator, prophet, apostle and elder of the church. Members of the church should look to the prophet for direction as if given by the Lord Himself; Oliver Cowdery to serve under Joseph to preach the gospel to the world. Section 22 - Historical Background: Previous to the official organization of the church, people had been baptized for the remission of sins. Now it was required to be baptized again, this time as members of God's church. Some people objected to needing baptism again. To resolve the confusion, Joseph received this revelation. Recap: All unauthorized covenants, including baptism, are null and void and “availeth him nothing” but must be done as authorized by God. The very reason for the restoration of the Gospel was to replace the “dead works” and unauthorized and obsolete ordinances of the past.

Section 19 - Historical Background: After the completion of the translation of the gold plates, Joseph returned to Palmyra to hire a publisher to print the manuscript, but was rejected by publishers in both Palmyra and Rochester. However, in August, 1829, Martin Harris was able to convince Grandin to publish the book but only after Martin securred the printing with one of his farms. Joseph instructed Oliver Cowdery to make 2 copies of the manuscript, one to hold under security and the other to be presented to the publisher. Oliver gradually brought only 26 pages each day for the printer to typeset. Meanwhile, Joseph returned to Harmony to be with Emma. However, in the midst of the printing process in Palmyra, everything came to a sudden stop when Grandin became frightened. He discovered the people of Palmyra had made a pact among themselves to boycott purchasing the book altogether. Without sales, Grandin would not get paid. Under these dire circumstances, Hyrum pleaded with Joseph to return to Palmyra and seek direction from the Lord. This revelation is the result, directed most particularly to Martin Harris. Recap: Every person must repent or suffer, which suffering is endless. The Lord then explains the meaning of “endless suffering” and “eternal punishment.” He then describes how terrible the suffering will be unless they repent, in which case they need not suffer at all because Christ has already suffered for the repentant. The Lord then directs Martin Harris to teach repentance and not the deeper doctrines as of yet; do not covet, pray vocally and remain humble. He then directs Martin to pay the printer's debt of $3,000 so the Book of Mormon can be published, and finally to rejoice and sing Hosanna, for the Lord has come!

Section 12 - Historical Background: Joseph Knight, a successful farmer living in Fayette, New York, was a loyal friend and former employer of Joseph Smith. Knowing Joseph Smith was translating the gold plates while in Harmony, Pennsylvania, Knight brought down a wagon of supplies to help Joseph and Emma. While there, he asked for a personal revelation, probably through the Urim and Thummim. Recap: The Lord confirms His divinity. Those who labor in His vineyard will be blessed and find salvation. Joseph Knight is counselled to be humble, loving, faithful and charitable.  Section 13 – Historical Background: While translating the plates, Joseph and Oliver were impressed with the subject of baptism which was frequently discussed in the record. Wondering what to do about their own baptism, they asked upon the Lord. As a result, a Heavenly manifestation opened before them as John the Baptist appeared and conferred the Aaronic priesthood upon Joseph and Oliver. Having this new authority, Joseph and Oliver baptized one another. Recap: John the Baptist confers the Aaronic Priesthood upon Joseph and Oliver, giving them authority to baptize into Christ's church. Sections 14-16 – Historical Background: After receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood from Peter, James and John, believed to have occurred in early June, 1829, the persecution in Harmony became severe. Joseph was instructed by the Lord to flee with Emma to Fayette, New York where the Whitmer family offered to share their small and modest home with them. Three of the Whitmer sons, David, John and Peter Jr, asked for personal revelations from Joseph. Recap: The Lord declares the divinity of these blessings, coming from God and not from Joseph. Counsel given to labor in the vineyard, keep God's commandments and preach repentance. All were asked to endure to the end. Unfortunately, Peter was the only one who remained loyal to the Lord. Section 17 – Historical Background: During the translation of the plates, it was learned that the Lord would establish the truthfulness of the record by three witnesses (see 2 Nephi 27:12 and Ether 5:4). Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer and Martin Harris all desired to be given the privilege of seeing the Gold Plates. Joseph inquired of the Lord concerning this, through the Urim and Thummim. Recap: Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer and Martin Harris are promised that if they have adequate faith, they will be allowed to not only see the Gold Plates, but also the breastplate, the sword of Laban, the Urim and Thummim, and the Liahona. They are commanded to use this witness to testify to the world of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and its translation by the gift and power of God.

Finally, in September, 1828, they were returned to Joseph after nearly 3 months of sorrow and repentance. Recap: Joseph is reprimanded by Moroni for allowing these sacred records to come into the hands of wicked men. Joseph is commanded not to retranslate the Book of Lehi, but, in order to thwart the evil design of Satan, he is to translate in its place the plates of Nephi, which is another record of Lehi and his family provided by the Lord who knew in advance the evil plan of the adversary. Section 11 – Historical Background: While Joseph and Oliver were working on the translation, brother Hyrum sought to receive council from Joseph regarding his desire to travel as a missionary to spread the message of the restored Gospel. Recap: Hyrum is commended for his desire to preach, but is counselled to wait a little while longer until he has learned more of the doctrine, for the Book of Mormon translation to be completed, and to be strengthened in his surety of the doctrine. With Martin Harris back in Palmyra and his wife Emma busy with household chores, Joseph awaited divine intervention. The Lord answered his prayers with the arrival of Oliver Cowdery, a young schoolteacher boarding in the Smith's home in Palmyra. After his own personal confirmation of the Lord's work, Oliver joined Joseph in Harmony Pennsylvania and began to assist as scribe. Oliver asked Joseph for a personal revelation from the Lord and received it as recorded in Section 6.      Recap:  Oliver receives counsel from the Lord to be diligent, to ask God for his needs and to seek wisdom, not riches. Oliver has a gift as a communicator, like Aaron's gift, and is to preach repentance. The Lord reminds Oliver of his personal conversion experience, which no one else knew up to this time, and to always look unto Christ.  Section 7 - Historical Background: As Joseph was translating 1 Nephi 14, he came to a vision of the latter days by Nephi but was commanded not to record it all because the Lord will command the Apostle John to record the remainder of this vision. Joseph and Oliver discussed John and his whereabouts, disagreeing on whether John tarried in the flesh or had died. Joseph petitioned the Lord on the matter and received section 7. Recap: The Lord reveals the conversation He will have in mortality with Apostles Peter and John, granting unto them their desires. Peter will desire to come speedily to Christ, whereas John will desire to tarry in the flesh until Christ's second coming. Section 8 – Historical Background: As Joseph's physical and emotional fatigue from translation became apparent, Oliver asked if he could help by doing some of the translation. After inquiring of the Lord, the answer came in section 8. Recap: God explains how prayers are answered. Oliver has the gift of revelation along with the gift of Aaron (communicator). God will grant other gifts of the Spirit if asked for in faith, for without faith nothing can be done. Section 9 – Historical Background: As Oliver attempts to translate, he finds that he cannot and becomes frustrated. The Lord provides comforting admonishment in section 9. Recap: Oliver is counselled to continue as a scribe for Joseph rather than attempt to translate for now; to be patient and not murmur, but be expedient in the work of translation. There are other records Oliver will be asked to translate [but due to the Church coming under condemnation -see section 84:54-58- this opportunity to translate never emerged].

In September, 1828, Moroni returns the Urim and Thummim and the Gold Plates to a very humble Joseph, who resumes the translation. Recap: Joseph is reprimanded for fearing man more than God, and is counselled that the works of God cannot be frustrated by men. Joseph's father receives a blessing through revelation outlining the marvelous work about to come forth and the need for the faithful to commit to serving the Lord. Guilt-ridden Martin Harris also asks for a blessing through revelation, hoping he can be one of the three witnesses to the Gold Plates. Revelation given on 11/01/1831 at a Church Conference, held in Hiram, Ohio Historical Background: By the fall of 1831, Joseph and Emma were staying with the Johnson family in Hyrum, Ohio. Many revelations had already been received from the Lord through the prophet Joseph Smith yet time had not allowed for their copying and distribution. Missionaries urgently needed copies of these revelations to take on their missions. The Lord instructed the saints to procure a printing press for this purpose and required Joseph to do 2 things: - First, he was directed to receive a revelation dictated by the Lord as a Preface to this compilation of revelations; - Secondly, he was directed to gather an assembly of the saints to review and approve the compilation as a book of scripture, to be used to direct and govern the Lord's church. At this conference of November 1, 1831, the Lord dictated Section 1 of this compilation, called the Book of Commandments and later changed to the Doctrine and Covenants. Recap of D & C 1: These revelations are a voice of warning from the Lord and will go out to all people to repent and prepare for the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. These proclamations will go to the ends of the earth by the weak and simple to kings and rulers. The Lord's only true and living church upon the face of the earth is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Therefore, search these revelations for whether spoken by the Lord or by His servants the prophets, it is the same.
