If you would like additional information, books, or if you would like to make a love donation; please visit us at https://www.walkinginpower.orgThe study of Revelation Chapters 2 and 3 focuses on the seven letters Christ addresses to seven literal churches, which Bern interprets as a chronological history of the Church Age and a type of the end-time church condition. Each letter follows a structured pattern: a commendation (praise), a rebuke (criticism), an admonition (exhortation to repent), and a promise for overcomers. Bern establishes the historical context by noting that man has repeatedly rejected God's provisions: Israel rejected the Father in favor of the Law, Judah rejected the Son (Jesus) for the counterfeit (Barabbas), and the early Christian Church, following Pentecost, began rejecting the Holy Spirit in favor of denominationalism and man-made systems, leading to the quenching of the Spirit's power.Bern then begins analyzing the first churches, highlighting their historical and doctrinal significance. Ephesusrepresents the Early Apostolic Church (a church of duty and works) that Christ rebukes for losing its "first love" and being "backsliden." Smyrna represents the persecuted church from the Apostolic Age up to Constantine; notably, Christ gives this church no rebuke, only encouragement to remain faithful amid suffering. Pergamum represents the Imperial State Church under Rome, where Christ says "Satan's throne is." This church is praised for holding fast to the faith but strongly rebuked for holding the false teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans (clergy controlling the laity), indicating a doctrinal compromise and a "licentious" condition due to the influence of paganism. The letter to Thyatira (the most complicated) begins the discussion of the influence of the "Jezebel spirit," representing a period where the church tolerated immorality and idolatry by mixing pagan practices with Christian doctrine.
Long a member of the Apostolic Church of God in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago, Darlene's faith has been a constant even as she experiences the inevitable ups and downs of life. At 71, Darlene's serene manner shines through and she peppers her conversation with thoughtful musings based on living a life of scripture. And a successful life it has been, despite an unsettling bout with breast cancer - happily married, blessed with a healthy child born in later life, and a “bonus” son; her career as an IRS agent and accountant fulfill her. Darlene's interests are varied. She is a lifelong learner full of curiosity about the world she lives in, and loves to travel to jazz festivals in this country and beyond. Conscious of the importance of physical activity and social endeavors, she also serves with the Women's Ministry and teaches at Children's Church. "Don't worry about anything, pray for everything - God will give me peace." - Darlene Norman
In this section, the creed asks us to declare our faith, our belief, and our trust in the church.
2025 marks the 1700th Anniversary of the formulation of the Council of Nicaea, which was a theological council to address theological issues in the churches around the world. The Council delivered to us a formulation of the Nicene Creed which is a summary of the New Testament priorities about the Christian faith. Through various Biblical passages, we are going to consider the points of the Nicene Creed hoping to discover the essential uniting truths of the Christian faith in order to make life decisions based upon Christian convictions that may challenge cultural interpretations and assumptions.
“We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.” Wait, we believe in the Catholic Church? I thought we were Protestant! The Nicene Creed echoes the language of almost every creed in church history using this wording to confess belief in the doctrine of the church. If we interpret the word “catholic” as speaking of an institution, we do have a problem. But the church was never an institution—it was always the assembly of the redeemed people. The word catholic means “universal”, the affirmation that in Christ, God has purchased a people for Himself. Our confession is that the church of Jesus is unified in the Gospel, global and diverse, and built on the foundation of the Apostles. Local churches are visible outposts of the universal church. In this light, we do believe in One, Holy, Universal, and Apostolic church made up of those who have believed and been baptized for the forgiveness of sin. This morning we will take a look at the doctrine of the church, and hopefully, come to realize the importance of participation in a local church for our spiritual well being.
