It's been five years since Simon Gerrans retired from professional cycling.  2018 was his last season. Gerrans says it was a big transition leaving elite cycling. He says it forced him find a new purpose in his life, goals, and new ambitions. He says it wasn't easy so it forced him to stay busy. At first he did an internship at Goldman Sachs and currently he finds himself running "The Service Course," and doing some commentary on the Tour de France.Gerrans grew up on a farm. It was the great Phil Anderson who helped, coached, and mentored him in the beginning of his cycling journey. He would leave for Europe at 19 years old to race for a small Italian amateur team. He would eventually end up in France. He turned pro in 2005 and wound up living in Monaco. Gerrans rode for teams like AG2R Prevoyance, Credit Agricole, Cervelo Test Team, Sky Pro Cycling, Orica GreenEDGE, Orica-Scott to BMC Racing Team. The wins in his career are plenty so I'm only going to mention a few. He won two stages in the Tour, one in the Giro, and one in the Vuelta. Classics? No problem, he won Milan San Remo and Liege Bastogne Liege. I think his most underrated win is his victory in the Melbourne to Warrnambool race in 2003.At 43 years old Gerrans has a young family, he's back in Australia, and he's more than content with his legacy amongst the greats of cycling.

In the final episode of the Life in the Peloton for this year, Mitch Docker is back on the other side of the mic with his friend and former Orica-Scott teammate Svein Tuft asking the questions. Find out about Mitch's school days and how he completed a year's worth of art coursework in a couple of days, his early racing days and how he got started on the road to the World Tour with the Drapac development team. We started working with Mitch at the start of the year, when Lionel Birnie interviewed him outside a busy bar in Girona for The Cycling Podcast. That episode can be found here (https://audioboom.com/posts/7483671-a-trip-to-girona-to-meet-mitch-docker) and together with this one provide the perfect bookends to the season. We're delighted to confirm that Life in the Peloton will return to The Cycling Podcast in 2021. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. I watched a fascinating documentary called Eat. Race. Win. that follows the cycling team Orica-Scott and their personal chef as they make their way through one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Long time coming but the pod is back. And back to cycling basics it is. Why live in Europe? How does the team structure work? Can you eat whatever you want because you ride everyday? Plus coffee rides, style checks, luft, nature stops and doping. Just some of the topics we cover as my brother, Kirk, gets behind the mic, asking Michael Hepburn and myself all those simple but niggling questions any non-cyclist might wonder about life as a professional cyclist. Kirk is a TV producer in Australia, who has produced shows like You Can’t Ask That and Demolition Man, and was previously also on screen on the show The Hungry Beast. Michael Hepburn has been my team mate on Orica-Scott for the last 6 years, where it has been a pleasure to grow with him in the early part of his potentially long career. Both Heppy and I spend a lot of time together in both Girona, Andorra and racing on the road, so it was interesting to be able to answer a few questions from someone who is outside the cycling bubble.

Orica-Scott fordeler holdets stjernestøv ud over årets tre Grand Tours. Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

Rachel Neylan is a Professional Cyclist who’s a part of the Orica-Scott team, she’s an Olympian, a silver medalist at the World Championships and a very driven and fascinating human being. Rachel Came to my house just before Christmas after reaching out to say she listened to the podcast on Twitter. She’d even post #podsie photos of her training rides when she was in Rio in the lead up to last year’s Olympics. So she came around to my house and we had a chat - a chat that was so engaging, that I didn’t end up talking to her about the biggest thing to happen in the previous year, going to Rio. Occasionally as an interviewer I get so caught up in the conversation that the ground we are covering is so engaging that it’s sometimes as good a story as the thing that they’re really known for. I texted Rachel afterwards to apologize and she responded that it was in fact a relief to not have to talk about Rio again. Reason being it was a quite emotional journey that she’d covered many times - which involves talking about the death of her Father at the start of 2016. For whatever reason, we didn’t go there but when the chat was over I didn’t feel I’d missed out on getting an authentic connection with Rachel at all. If you’d like to know in greater detail about Rachel’s path to the Olympics there’s a great SBS article which you can read.So come to our humble apartment in Bronte, the first time I’ve had an Olympian in this house, I still get a thrill meeting athletes of that calibre. This is a cup of tea at my kitchen table with Rachel Neylan. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
