This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo. In this month's Chronicles Sveino and I have gone for probably our deepest dive yet - back to where we first got to know each other, taking a look at the formation of Australia's first ever World Tour cycling team, GreenEDGE. Most of you will know the team - which is now known as Jayco Alula, already, and many of you may remember those first few years and big wins. These days it's easy to take it for granted but when this team arrived in Europe it was fresh and very new, and it delivered right from the start - taking out thirty races, including Milan San Remo with Simon Gerrans in its first year of existence! As well as performing on the road the team had an amazing presence with guys like Dan Jones working to create the image of a real Australian team, and having a lot of fun along the way with a few unconventional ideas - like that infamous ‘Call Me Maybe' video from 2012. For myself as an Australian being part of a team like GreenEdge was huge. It was as close as you could come outside of the World Championships to racing for Australia. The team represented a country and a culture, and for the international riders on the team like Sveino it was a chance to be brought in to the Aussie way and to be a part of a really special team. As riders we had both experienced the team from the inside, and it played a huge role in our careers, so for this episode we wanted to really get behind the scenes and understand how the team was built, what was the idea behind it, and how and why it worked the way it did. We wanted to cover all angles and hear about the parts that even we didn't see or understand at the time. We were lucky to get hold of the son of the founder and the man who helped make it all work, Andrew Ryan, as well as head DS Matt White, star riders Simon Gerrans and Daryl Impey and our good mate Luke Durbridge who is now in his thirteenth pro season with the team. On top of all of that we spoke to the man behind bringing a lot of that fun hardworking (occasionally pie-eating) Australian culture videographer Dan Jones. Of course, Sveino and I also chip in with our own stories and experiences riding for and being a part of the team. This is a really special episode for myself and for Sveino. GreenEDGE formed a huge part of our racing career and there are so many memories there that this was a real gift to be able to record. We both really hope that it comes through to you guys and you take the time to give it a listen, it's a big one but it's a good one! Cheers! Mitch
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The Melbourne to Warrnambool is a race like no other. It may not get a huge press outside of Australia, but the 129-year-old event truly is an iconic race. Starting off as a handicap back in 1895 the race route has never included any major climbs, instead it is a race that is shaped by its brutal length and frequent crosswinds. In years gone by it was the biggest race of the year for generations of domestic Australian professionals, in recent years it has been a direct stepping-stone to the professional world for riders like Cam Scott and Jensen Plowright. In this edition of Life in the Peloton we get stuck in to all the things that make this great race so special. I tracked down and spoke to some absolute legends of the race; Tim Decker, Peter ‘Bulldog' Besanko and Simon Gerrans. There was so much great stuff that came out of what these three very different riders had to say about the race. We covered some of Bulldog's wild stories from a much different era in the handicap events in the seventies and eighties – when the riders used to do the three hundred kilometres on three (yes three) bidons! Tim explained how he was probably the last of a generation of riders who used to prepare specifically for the event, and what the race meant to him. While Gerro – who turned pro off the back of beating some top Euro pros at the race in the early 2000s explains what an impact winning the race can have even now. But that isn't all! Not content with never having done the race myself, I managed to get ‘hands on' in this year's edition behind the wheel of a team car as DS for Team Duda, a local Melbourne outfit. It was a great day out in the team car (my first one behind the wheel!) and it finally gave me a great taste of what this race really is about. The passion and the history of this race really comes across from everyone I spoke to for this pod, and I just love some of the stories that came out. It really is epic stuff. It may not be a Monument in the context of the big five European Classics, but I think that it is a race that has earned the title: The Aussie Monument.
It's been five years since Simon Gerrans retired from professional cycling. 2018 was his last season. Gerrans says it was a big transition leaving elite cycling. He says it forced him find a new purpose in his life, goals, and new ambitions. He says it wasn't easy so it forced him to stay busy. At first he did an internship at Goldman Sachs and currently he finds himself running "The Service Course," and doing some commentary on the Tour de France.Gerrans grew up on a farm. It was the great Phil Anderson who helped, coached, and mentored him in the beginning of his cycling journey. He would leave for Europe at 19 years old to race for a small Italian amateur team. He would eventually end up in France. He turned pro in 2005 and wound up living in Monaco. Gerrans rode for teams like AG2R Prevoyance, Credit Agricole, Cervelo Test Team, Sky Pro Cycling, Orica GreenEDGE, Orica-Scott to BMC Racing Team. The wins in his career are plenty so I'm only going to mention a few. He won two stages in the Tour, one in the Giro, and one in the Vuelta. Classics? No problem, he won Milan San Remo and Liege Bastogne Liege. I think his most underrated win is his victory in the Melbourne to Warrnambool race in 2003.At 43 years old Gerrans has a young family, he's back in Australia, and he's more than content with his legacy amongst the greats of cycling.

After a career that saw him earn a pair of monuments, a World Championship silver medal and stage wins in all three grand tours... you could be forgiven for thinking Simon Gerrans would be enjoying a restful retirement. Instead, the man simply known as 'Gerro' is busier than ever. He tells Bobby and Jens about how his motocross failings and famous neighbour set him on the path to the peloton, reminds Jens about an untimely train and reveals all about his new business. Bobby and Jens is a Shocked Giraffe production for Velonews. This episode was edited by Tim Mossa and produced by Mark Payne

What better way to delve into Australian Simon Clarke's (Israel Premier Tech) breakaway Stage 5 win than with his former coach and mentor Dave Sanders. Sanders has coached and mentored some of Australia's finest road cyclists including Cadel Evans and Simon Gerrans and was the head coach at the Victorian Institute of Sport for more than 20 years. Sanders talks to our hosts Mike, Matilda and Lee (who somehow lost his shirt for this episode) about Simon's journey to his historic win, the tactics discussed between the two beforehand “safest place is up the road,”, and how Simon was feeling post-win on one of the most unforgiving cobbled stages of the tour. Of course, the trio kicks off the episode with an analysis of the last couple of days of racing, and their predictions for how the teams must work together in the stages ahead if anyone is to have a shot at reigning back the almighty Tadej Pogačar - can he be caught or is it too late already?
Rapha presents Talking Luft! This week I've got Aussie former professional cyclist, and commentator Simon Gerrans on Talking Luft – brother to Andy Gerrans, Pro team Osteopath, who I had on the podcast last week talking about life as a staff member on a World Tour team. For those not familiar with Simon, he had a hugely successful 14 year career – winning stages in all 3 Grand Tours as well as wearing the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France and taking out multiple one day classics such a Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo. Simon's no stranger to the podcast, I had him on for an in-depth chat about his career way back in 2017, when he was in his 13th year pro. Head back and listen to that to hear more about Simon. But for now, we're Talking Luft. We chat caps & where Luft originated from. We get into the serious stuff like shaving legs post retirement, old team kit, Gravel bikes, the atmosphere at Amstel Gold Race, cyclocross racers, Fassa Bortolo kit, a Vuelta war story, the epic 2006 Tour de France and so much more! Gerro's so easy to chat to, and always has a great story to tell. I hope you love the listen as much as I did. Stay tuned next week for an episode dedicated to the art of breakaway – the Breakaway Theory with Taco Van der Hoorn, Steve Cummings, Ben Healy and Tim DeClercq. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Have you ever wondered how you get a job on a Pro Cycling Team as a staff member? Or who the people are who work behind the scenes? What qualifications do they have? What is a Soigneur compared to a Physiotherapist or to an Osteopath? Well I sat down with Andrew Gerrans, or Andy as I know him, the brother to well-known retired pro cyclist Simon Gerrans. Andy is a veteran in the cycling world, not as a cyclist, but as an Osteopath. He's worked in pro teams for more than 10 years, and like all the other staff, can be a jack of all trades at times, moulding into the routine and getting the job done, often outside of his trained skill set, on the rigorous day to day grind of World Tour racing. But his path into the World Tour wasn't as straight forward as you might think and I was keen to hear how he eventually came to work in cycling & ask him about keeping a job in the sport and the day to day life of a pro team staff member. After a few brief periods trying a job in cycling while studying Osteo in 2005, Andy decided to take the more ‘traditional pathway' for a university graduate and set up his own practice in his hometown of Mansfield in country Victoria, Australia. In 2013, realising he was looking for more, he sold his practice and took off on a soul-searching backpacking trip around the world. While visiting his brother, Simon, in Europe in June, he was asked to put his Osteo skills to good use and help him prepare for the upcoming Tour de France. It turned out GreenEdge was also looking for a therapist to join them for the month of July. And then in August… And September. And soon Andy's solo trip was cut short. Andy is now working with Israel Premier Tech after a long stint at GreenEdge and has not only made a life for himself as a World Tour Osteopath living in Europe but, very much like his older brother, an impressive reputation within the world we call top level cycling. I knew it would be great to have Andy on the podcast to give some perspective into what it's like working for a World Tour team, & hear the ins and outs of finding (& keeping) a job in the sport. It was great hearing his insight into just how differing and dynamic the staff roles are. I hope you enjoy the chat. Stay tuned next week for Talking Luft with Simon Gerrans! In this episode of Kilometre 0, we tell the story of one of the longest-running teams in the peloton. The AG2R-Citroën team is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Vincent Lavenu's team started life as Chazal, sponsored by a charcuterie producer, in 1992 and rode the Tour de France for the first time in 1993, with former Vuelta winner Eric Caritoux and future Tour stage winner Jaan Kirsipuu in the line-up. Later the team was sponsored by the supermarket chain Casino and insurance firm AG2R came on board as a co-sponsor in 1998 before taking over as title sponsors in 2000. Arguably the team's most successful years, certainly in the Tour de France, were when Romain Bardet was riding in their colours. In this episode we hear from AG2R riders past and present, including Simon Gerrans, Larry Warbasse, Oliver Naesen and Aurelien Paret-Peintre, and discover there's more to the team than their now trademark brown shorts. Day D minus 1 here in France and Christophe Mallet & Dave McKenzie preview the race upon us, and we have Simon Gerrans popping in.
We are back for 2017, and what a way to start with Simon Gerrans. We all know him as an assassin on the bike, a winning machine, where it sometimes feels like he is winning more races than he is losing. But what I wanted to find out, was when did that switch get turned on for him, from being a rider who can win, to a rider who is expected to win. I get inside that cool calm collected mind of his that when inside the final few hundred meters of a race can make unbelievable race winning decisions. To finish off, hang in there after the music at the end for the first live feed segment podcast I have done, not very successfully but it's a bit of fun anyway.
Val and Faith kick off this pre-Invasion Day show with an excerpt from Paul Keating's Redfern speech and David Bowie's Let's Dance. We share our first bike moments for the year before taking a look at news in the bike riding world including; Simon Gerrans fourth win of the Santos Tour Down Under, Tyler Farrar finishing a stage on a spectator's bike, Bridie O'Donnell's brilliant world hour record, and disturbing incidents involving riders in both Melbourne and Sydney. We move on to talk about Spinlister, the peer-to-peer bike sharing site Faith recently tried, and proposed changes to legislation in NSW and how they effect cyclists.the program finished with a list of events including those listed at BikeFun, The Squeaky Wheel and melbourne Bike Rave.
There’s plenty of history being rewritten of late in road cycling circles, but with former Australian Institute of Sport rider Scott McGrory recently demystifying the ‘legend’ that is – or was – Charlie Walsh, the annals of Australian track cycling are also getting a thorough workout. In this week’s Cycling Central podcast, we – that being Al Hinds, Phil Gomes and Anthony Tan – speak to Jonathan Lovelock, author of ‘The Human Cost Of Gold Medals’, published today on the CyclingTips website, which follows up from the fallout created by McGrory’s nervy but stirring retrospective. We also get on the blower to Kevin Tabotta, performance director at Cycling Australia, to review the Cyclones’ medal tally-topping haul following the track world championships in Cali, Colombia, and ask what we can expect down the (pun alert!) track (at least we warned you!) as we move inexorably closer to the 2016 Games in Rio. The 72nd edition of the ‘Race to the Sun’, Paris-Nice, begins this Sunday. With no prologue, no time trial, and no hilltop finish it’s a surprisingly open parcours that could favour a puncheur like Simon Gerrans or Sylvain Chavanel or GC contender like Richie Porte or Tejay van Garderen; the only certainty, it seems, is that the cycling world will be watching. Aside from Strade Bianche and Roma Maxima also on this weekend there’s the Australian MTB championships – yes, we know, it’s only March and you’re already glued to the couch! – so Al and Tanny defer to the Wisdom of Phil, who guides us through the contenders hoping to book themselves a seat to Glasgow for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Ye up for that, laddies and lassies? If yoos say aye then press ‘play’!
