Italian one-day cycling race, and one of the five monuments
POPULARITY
Matej Mohorič has built his reputation on his grit, determination and pioneering descents. He was pedaling in the super tuck on his way to winning the U23 World Championship in 2013... and later used a new innovation - the dropper post - to his first monument win, securing the 2022 Milan San-Remo title. His interview in the aftermath of his third Tour de France victory this year, united a peloton in admiration. Few had the ability to express the challenges Matej had faced in professional cycling but every single pro understood the feelings he expressed. In this conversation with Bobby and Jens we catch up with Matej shortly before his family holiday! Bobby and Jens is a Shocked Giraffe production for Velo. Filippo Ganna is utterly unique in the men's peloton. At the time of recording Filippo was just a week short of his 27th birthday yet he has a palmares that is remarkable in its breadth and scale - he's won six stages at the Giro d'Italia - including five straight time trial stages… and a mountainous breakaway. He's the reigning hour record holder, yet finished second at this years' Milan San Remo. He spoke to us just before winning his first week-long stage race at the Tour of Wallonie as he prepares for the Cycling Super World Championships in Glasgow and La Vuelta…. Where he'll be looking to add to his six track world titles and his two world time trial titles… and did we mention he's also a reigning Olympic champion? Filippo speaks to us of the brotherhood of cycling, his plans for the future in the sport and shares his thoughts about life on the road. Bobby and Jens is a Shocked Giraffe production for Velo. This episode was produced by Mark Payne and edited by Kirk Warner.
Mathieu van der Poel is a superstar in the sport and he has had a great season despite no result from the Tour de France 2023 but he won Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo earlier in the year. But will he be able to be the world champion on the road for the first time in his career?

With every race season the age of the professional rider entering the WorldTour peloton is getting younger and younger but at the same time, the demands are getting higher with a packed racing schedule as well as the level of professionalism ever increasing. So, we caught up with two legends of the peloton, Fabian Cancellara & Axel Merckx to discuss this in more detail and how their two teams fit into this landscape, namely Tudor Procycling and the renowned Axeon Hermans Berman. To do this, presenters Jonty Camp and Phil Gale are joined by Axel Merckx, owner of Axeon Hagens Berman cycling team, as well as two of his riders, Darren Rafferty & Michael Garrison, to tell us what it's like to be part of one of the most illustrious feeder teams on the circuit. We then head off to the start of Milan San Remo where we speak with Fabian Cancellara about his Tudor Pro Cycling project and their plans for the future. Whilst there we pose questions to team CEO Raphael Meyer, about what makes a WorldTour team, the logistics and nurturing of the talent. We then speak to Tom Bohli who is a star rider on the Tudor Pro Cycling team about his journey through the WorldTour peloton. New for this season is our Riders Diary feature, in the first episode, we have Michael Schär from AG2R CITROËN TEAM. He sends us an audio diary of the days leading up to and after Paris-Roubaix sharing details about his prep, how to attack the cobbles as well as some stories from inside the heart of the Queen of the Classics. Be sure to follow our different social media channels to stay up to date with everything happening here at BMC, as well as catch content from behind the scenes with our different Teams and Athletes. While Mathieu van der Poel recently secured his first Paris-Roubaix victory, the great Fabian Cancellara won the last of his three cobbles just over a decade ago. Though the fundamentals remain the same, road bike tech has come a long way in the meantime. Spartacus won aboard a Trek Domane 6-Series – an endurance road bike designed specifically to tame cobbles. The Flying Dutchman, on the other hand, rode a Canyon Aeroad CFR – the same aero road bike he recently piloted to victory in Milan-San Remo, with only a few minor modifications. With that in mind, devoted road bike nerds, Jack Luke, Simon von Bromley and Ashley Quinlan, sat down to compare the two bikes and discuss the major leaps in Roubaix-winning tech of the past 10 years. In our third round of Arrivée podcasts of the 2023 season, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap the action from a fast - historically fast - & frenetic Paris-Roubaix. After his victory in Milan-Sanremo three weeks ago, Mathieu van der Poel looked like the hot favourite - but could his long-time rival Wout Van Aert turn it into a Sunday in Hell for the Dutchman? Lionel was on the ground to find out, & we discuss the main talking points here. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. In our second round of Arrivée podcasts of the 2023 season, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe get together to serve up their hot takes after a memorable edition of the Tour of Flanders. Could Mathieu van der Poel repeat his Milan-Sanremo heroics and thereby equal the career record of three Flanders wins? Would the home favourite Wout Van Aert finally add his name to the roll of honour of Vlaanderens Mooiste? What if Tadej Pogačar thwarted them both? After the usual weekly news round-up, we discuss the latest Pogcineration of Paris-Nice and the Roglication of Tirreno-Adriatico. What do these two results mean for the Grand Tour season and, in particular, Jonas Vingegaard's chances of retaining his Tour de France crown? In the final part of the episode, we also look ahead to Milan-Sanremo, by many estimates the most boring Monument of the season and by Daniel's the best. G and Luke are back with their first episode of their new season — and their first Watts Occurring as part of Crowd Network! There's Paris-Nice and Tirreno Adriatico to catch up on but, for the first time in years, neither has raced either of the classic early-season WorldTour races. The boys divulge why, reflect on their off-seasons and look ahead to Milan-San Remo. See you next week for Luke's lowdown from the longest one-day race of the year.
Milan San Remo is the longest and the first Monument of the year. As per the norm, this year has a whole host of potential winners from Mathieu van der Poel to Tom Pidcock or even Tadej Pogacar so there is much to speculate about before the race.
Randy and Dean Warren discuss the latest in professional cycling. Dean just has returned from a vacation trip and he and Randy talk about how well Tadaj Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Primož Roglič (Team Jumbo-Visma) each win three stages and the overall at Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico. These races will be followed by the first monument of the season, Milan-Sanremo.

Rapha presents Talking Luft! We're back with Talking Luft, and I'm chatting with a well-known name in Aussie cycling, you might not have heard his name for a while but you'll definitely know it. He's one of only two Australians to win the Italian monument Milan-San Remo, and he's a former teammate of mine, I'm talking of course about Matt Goss. A born and bred Tasmanian, Gossy started his career on the track, and was a bronze medallist in the team pursuit at the World Championships in L.A. in 2005, before making the transition to the road and making his professional debut with Bjarne Riis at Team CSC in 2007. Throughout his career, he rode for other big teams including HTC Columbia, GreenEDGE, and MTN-Qhubeka. He is a two-time stage winner in the Giro d'Italia, and a Tour de France stage winner as part of the GreenEDGE TTT win in 2013. He's also an all-around good bloke and I'm stoked I got the chance to chat with him as part of The Race Communique at this year's TDU. He gave us his insight into the race's sprint stages, we also tested his knowledge on things like Tasmanian beers and past winners of Milan-San Remo, and quizzed him in true Talking Luft fashion. Enjoy the listen guys! Cheers, Mitch
Alpecin-Deceuninck will officially be a world tour team despite spending the last few seasons dominating plenty of one-day races and picking up many grand tour stages along the way. Mathieu van der Poel is still the star attraction and he will hope to surge in the Monuments and even win the elusive Milan-San Remo and Paris Roubaix.
In the 2nd part of my interview with Freddie Rodriguez we start where we left off at, coming off the Poggio in Milan San Remo in 2002. We dig into what he was thinking, feeling, and his positioning to set him up for the sprint. From there we talk about Ghent Wevelgem, his first ride in Paris Roubaix, and whether he did anything special to his bike for that race. Eventually we touch on him leaving Domo Farm Frites. Why he ended up riding for Vini Calderola and the Aqua & Sapone to the Lotto teams. Freddie eventually had enough of Europe and decided with having kids it was time to head home. That adventure brought Rock Racing, Team Exergy and his final team Jelly Belly.
Rapha presents Talking Luft! This week I've got Aussie former professional cyclist, and commentator Simon Gerrans on Talking Luft – brother to Andy Gerrans, Pro team Osteopath, who I had on the podcast last week talking about life as a staff member on a World Tour team. For those not familiar with Simon, he had a hugely successful 14 year career – winning stages in all 3 Grand Tours as well as wearing the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France and taking out multiple one day classics such a Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo. Simon's no stranger to the podcast, I had him on for an in-depth chat about his career way back in 2017, when he was in his 13th year pro. Head back and listen to that to hear more about Simon. But for now, we're Talking Luft. We chat caps & where Luft originated from. We get into the serious stuff like shaving legs post retirement, old team kit, Gravel bikes, the atmosphere at Amstel Gold Race, cyclocross racers, Fassa Bortolo kit, a Vuelta war story, the epic 2006 Tour de France and so much more! Gerro's so easy to chat to, and always has a great story to tell. I hope you love the listen as much as I did. Stay tuned next week for an episode dedicated to the art of breakaway – the Breakaway Theory with Taco Van der Hoorn, Steve Cummings, Ben Healy and Tim DeClercq. The Cycling Podcast Féminin returns to review the spring Classics campaign. Rose Manley and Orla Chennaoui are joined by Lionel Birnie as they each select their outstanding moments of the spring. Annemiek van Vleuten bookended her spring with victories in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Liège-Bastogne-Liège but she was outfoxed in several of the other classics. It was a spring of two halves for SD Worx, Trek-Segafredo found ways to win with Elisa Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini and Paris-Roubaix has evolved from a fledgling event to a full-blown Classic in the space of six months and two editions. Plus, we discuss the possibility of a women's edition of Milan-Sanremo being added to the calendar – although that should actually be re-added... Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Photo: Zac Williams Christmas is here. And by that I mean: it's Cobbled Classics' season. If you've listened to the podcast you'll have heard me bang on about the cobbled classics, Belgium, and especially the brutally beautiful Paris-Roubaix. It's no secret that these races were a passion of mine throughout my career and being on the other side of the fence hasn't changed that one bit. Every year I have loved catching up with my good mate Luke (Durbo) Durbridge, from Team Bike-Exchange, on the podcast mid-classics to debrief the races that have been, preview the coming classics & generally chat about Belgium during this racing period. This year was no different, except that I'm back in Australia & more keen than ever to hear about racing from someone inside the peloton. I caught up with Durbo the day after Tour of Flanders, and he recounts the less than ideal travel schedule that a lot of riders embark upon the night of a brutal 270km. We take a look back at the Spring classics, from Milan-San Remo through to Tour of Flanders. We chat about the amazing crowds lining the cobbles to the incredible speed of the bunch, and talk some massive power numbers that are being put out in these races. We then answer your listener questions – from after race parties to cobble-specific equipment, to the ‘Spring Classics Rider', to recon & recovery between races and what the single thing is that will win or lose you the bike race. I could chat all day about the classics, especially with Durbo. This was a good laugh & great insight into the new level of racing up there in Flanders. Enjoy the listen and stay tuned for a special Talking Luft 3.0 with Durbo next week. I want to dedicate this episode to Richard Moore. A huge loss in the cycling and journalism community. Will miss you mate. Matej Mohorič was not the strongest climber or the fastest sprinter at Milan-San Remo. But he was strong enough to bridge the the front group over the decision final Poggio climb. And then, as his race will forever be remember, he dropped his dropper post and the best cyclists in the world on the technical descent and then held off his chasers on the flat 2.2km run-in to the finish. In this episode, Jim Cotton and Ben Delaney analyze Mohorič's power numbers at each critical section in comparison to those of Mathieu van der Poel. This power analysis comes courtesy VeloNews training columnist Zach Nehr. Jim and Ben also discuss Mohorič's tactics at the decisive points of the race, and talk about the specifics of the dropper post he used, how he used it, and whether we will see others using the technology in future races.
John talks daydreaming and what a helpful tool it can be in dialing up motivation. Patrick says goodbye to former teammate Jay LaPlante and talks about last weekend's winner of Milan-San Remo, Matej Mohoric and his secret weapon. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe are back to discuss the racing in Spain and Belgium. At the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya – or should that be Volta Down Under – Australian riders took the opening three stages and in Belgium we saw the World Cycle Path Championships, otherwise known as the Minerva Classic Brugge-De Panne. Daniel asks the key question – would you prioritise watching the race that takes place amid the gently rolling hills and verdant beauty of Catalonia, or on the semi-urban Belgian coastline? That might not be the exact wording but it was certainly a loaded question. We also look back at Milan-Sanremo and Matej Mohorič's use of mountain bike tech – the dropper seat post – to help him tackle the descent of the Poggio. This year's race did not disappoint with so many big names in contention. The longest race of the season somehow manages incredible action in the last two climbs. The big surprise, "The Other Slovenian". Will we see a new piece of technology banned from road cycling? Perhaps.
Spoiler alert: This is our post-race analysis of Milan-Sanremo so if you're yet to watch the race and don't want to know the result save this episode until you've seen the action. This is the first episode of Arrivée, our new post-race analysis show covering the Classics season. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the 113th edition of Milan-Sanremo, the first Monument of the 2022 season. Who won it and more importantly how did they do it? We unpick the major incidents from the longest one-day race on the World Tour calendar. We'll follow up with any unresolved storylines and take a deeper dive, cover the opening days of the Volta a Catalunya and Classic Brugge De Panne, and look ahead to the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and Gent-Wevelgem in our regular episode later this week. The second of this week's episodes looks ahead to Milan-Sanremo and asks whether Tadej Pogačar can become the first grand tour champion since Vincenzo Nibali to win La Primavera. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss dominance and whether Pogačar is on course to 'complete' cycling. Winning Milan-Sanremo, a race that can be won by sprinters, climbers and attackers, would be his third Monument victory in under a year but other teams, notably Jumbo-Visma and Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, will have plenty to say about that. This week on the CyclingTips podcast... We discuss Paris-Nice, especially the fantastic final stage, and Tirreno-Adriatico and look ahead to Milan-Sanremo on Saturday. Plus, Lorena Wiebes seems unbeatable in a sprint after her performance at Ronde van Drenthe. For this week's Nerd Nugget, James is excited to test an $800 road bike.
In the first of two episodes this week, Richard, Lionel and Daniel look back at Paris-Nice and Tirreno Adriatico, the stage races in France and Italy respectively won by the Slovenian superstars, Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar. Roglič's performance in the ‘Race to the Sun' ended up throwing up as many questions as answers, though in the end he did win – and that, as Lionel points out, is the crucial fact. In Italy, Pogačar continued his utterly dominant start to the season with a performance that only really suggested one question – what can Pogačar not win? Whether he will win Milan-Sanremo is the question we will turn to in the other episode due out later this week as we preview the first monument of the season.
