In this week's episode, we dive into the life of Hollywood's original “I'll do it my way” girl: Katharine Hepburn. From growing up in a fiercely progressive household (her mom was literally fighting for birth control while her dad was lecturing on public health) to reinventing herself as the pants wearing, ice-bath-taking, golf obsessed wellness influencer of 1930, Hepburn was never going to fit the studio mold. We unpack her rise from east coast tomboy to four time Oscar winner, the rumors, the reinventions, the romances (real and speculated), and the unapologetic independence that made her a legend. It's a story of privilege, pressure, feminism before we called it that, and the price of living life on your own terms in old Hollywood. History is just gossip, and this is Hepburn like you've never heard her.

Dr. Millie Hepburn is an Associate Professor in the Davis & Henley College of Nursing at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Upon meeting Millie, you quickly feel her energy and enthusiasm for her work in the healthcare field. With her many publications, grants, service work and projects in motion, it is her passion and leadership for cultivating understanding and curiosity for the next generation of nurses that is most impressive and prevalent. Her statement, “Diversity in nursing makes patient care safer” is the seed she plants with students each day, impacting nursing students to understand that who they will take care of may be a person from a culture with a native language, skin tone, and heritage much different than their own. Her office is filled with signs to build self efficacy with students, but also to build community among them. Dr. Hepburn's advanced degrees and vast experience speak for themselves, but it is her personal commitment to caring for others that is at her core. The youngest of 6 children, as a child she hoped to be a veterinarian, but scholarships weren't enough to fund becoming a vet. However, nursing school felt like the perfect fit for her and she never looked back. Working in various hospitals in both urban and rural environments, she continued to flourish in professional and academic arenas. Her curiosity and research extended beyond the walls of the traditional classroom and clinical settings to working with Native Americans and learning about their healing practices. In her interview she speaks candidly about her experience as a nurse and supervisor, but her real passion came when she began to impact students preparing for their professional practice. Her deep understanding of first-generation college students and the many challenges they juggle makes her the perfect candidate to work as the Associate Director with the accelerated students who are on the fast track to complete their nursing degree. Her firm but empathetic approach to their preparation is magical as she builds a community of inquisitive learners and focused practitioners. With a recent grant to purchase a virtual reality training system, she creates opportunities for students to immerse in diverse settings broadening their experience and preparation for their future in healthcare. She routinely seeks grants to support her students through their educational pursuits, as she knows first hand about the financial burdens of getting a college degree. In addition to her work preparing the next generation of nurses, she engages in research and serves on a variety of boards. Her focus is on stroke patients and promoting neurological care, but she is also deeply involved in supporting addiction programs and advocating for domestic violence victims.
Anna and Ben sit down to visit the third most successful film of 1972, the slapstick comedy "What's Up, Doc?" They discuss how the film compares to its obvious antecedents and whether Streisand's character is more manipulative and callous than either Hepburn in "Bringing Up Baby" or any of Groucho's schemers, and whether Bugs Bunny's life has to be endangered to justify his actions. Of course you know that this means war...

pWotD Episode 3091: Shohei Ohtani Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 331,536 views on Saturday, 18 October 2025 our article of the day is Shohei Ohtani.Shohei Ohtani (Japanese: 大谷 翔平, Hepburn: Ōtani Shōhei; pronounced [oːtaɲi ɕoːheː] (SHOW-hey oh-TAH-nee); born July 5, 1994) is a Japanese professional baseball designated hitter and pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Nicknamed "Shotime", he has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Angels and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Because of his elite contributions as a hitter and as a pitcher, a rarity as a two-way player, Ohtani's prime seasons have been considered among the greatest in baseball history, with some comparing them favorably to the early career of Babe Ruth.Considered early on as an elite two-way player, Ohtani was the first pick of the Fighters in the 2012 NPB draft. He played for the Fighters from 2013 through 2017 as a pitcher and an outfielder and won the 2016 Japan Series with them. The Fighters posted Ohtani to MLB after the 2017 season, and he signed with the Angels, soon winning the 2018 American League (AL) Rookie of the Year Award.Following an injury-plagued 2019 and 2020, Ohtani hit 46 home runs and struck out 156 batters en route to winning his first AL Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) in 2021, a statistically unprecedented two-way season that saw him bestowed with the Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award. In 2022, he became the first player in the modern era to qualify for both the hitting and pitching leaderboards in one season, finishing third in the AL with 219 strikeouts.Ohtani won his second AL MVP in 2023, leading the AL with 44 home runs while recording 10 wins as a pitcher. He was the first player to win multiple unanimous MVPs and the first Japanese-born player to win a league home run title. After the 2023 season, Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, the then-largest contract in professional sports history. Since 2023, Ohtani's jerseys have sold more than any other player in the U. S., Japan and worldwide. Unable to pitch in 2024 while recovering from a second elbow injury, Ohtani played as a DH for the Dodgers. He became the first player in MLB history to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season and was unanimously named the 2024 National League MVP. He won the 2024 World Series in his first MLB postseason appearance.Internationally, Ohtani represents Japan. At the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he won the MVP Award for the tournament following Japan's victory over the United States. The 2023 final was one of the most-watched baseball games in history, culminating with Ohtani striking out Angels teammate and U. S. captain Mike Trout on a full count, securing a 3–2 win and Japan's third title. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:24 UTC on Sunday, 19 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Shohei Ohtani on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Justin.

Cary Grant month continues as we discuss THE quintessential screwball comedy, Bringing Up Baby. Howard Hawks directed the 1938 film which stars Cary Grant as engaged paleontologist David Huxley, who is trying to score a one million dollar grant for his museum when he crosses paths with Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn), a wonderfully chaotic disruption to his plans. From a missing intercostal clavicle to a leopard named Baby (played by a charming cat named Neissa), Grant and Hepburn are delightful in this very funny classic. To read more about Neissa the leopard and her handler Olga Celeste, click here.
In this episode, I'm joined by Jeanna and David Hepburn, who share their remarkable story of healing, redemption, and love. For years, David wrestled with the pull of pornography, the burden of guilt, and 20 years spent away from God. Ultimately, God gave Him a miracle as great as "parting the waters of the Red Sea". In another state, Jeana walked her own path of heartache, learning to trust God in the consequence of others' choices. Though they were not together during those difficult years, each discovered the peace and restoration found in the atonement of Jesus Christ. In God's perfect timing, their separate journeys of healing ultimately brought them to each other. Today, their marriage is built on understanding, grace, and faith.Their story is a beautiful reminder that it's never too late for God's healing to change us, bring us back to Him, and even create new beginnings. This conversation is filled with honesty, hope, and the assurance that no matter where we've been, Christ can make us whole again.Connect with Shiree at shireebest.com Join the "Just Love Them" Facebook groupEmail Shiree at imlivinginjoy@gmail.com

Emotions play a crucial role in our overall mental health, acting as both messengers and influencers of our psychological well-being. Positive emotions like joy, gratitude, and love can enhance mental resilience, foster strong social connections, and improve our ability to cope with stress. But on the flip side, the more challenging emotions such as sadness, anger, jealousy or anxiety, if persistent and unaddressed, can contribute to mental health issues and illness. Understanding and managing our emotions has a positive impact on our wellbeing. By recognizing and processing our emotions, we are better equipped to deal with life's challenges, manage strong feelings, achieve better emotional balance, enhance our mental clarity, and improve our overall quality of life. But how do we learn to manage our emotions more effectively? For many we can feel at the mercy of our feelings, unaware that by drawing from simple techniques from within, we can help mitigate their intensity and reduce overwhelm. This is where Dr Emma Hepburn comes in. An award winning clinical psychologist, lecturer, author and illustrator, Dr Emma has written and illustrated the books ‘A Toolkit For Happiness', ‘A Toolkit For Modern Life' and most recently ‘A Toolkit for Your Emotions - 45 Ways To Feel Better'. Dr Emma Hepburn is also one of the most well-known psychologists on Instagram as @thepsychologymum and has won numerous awards for her contribution to mental health awareness. Dr Emma talks to The Happier Life Project host Gabby about how emotions are made and where they come from. She shares how emotional habits are created and what it means to be on the emotional roller coaster of life, with all of its loop the loops. Dr Emma also explains how our past history and experiences influence our brain and body to create an emotional response; and ways we can objectively step back to review if how we are feeling is more of an echo from the past, rather than an appropriate response to the present. Dr Emma reveals some of her favourite tools to manage more difficult emotions and suggests ways we might break emotional patterns that are not helpful to us. The expert psychologist also explains why we should never feel ashamed of our emotions and how we can positively influence others towards the feel good feelings too. 'A Toolkit for Your Emotions' helps readers to navigate and understand their emotions effectively. Taking a deep dive into how we feel, Dr Emma explains all the tools we need to intercept and redirect challenging emotions by offering practical strategies, exercises, and insights. Each topic is illustrated with Dr Emma's well-loved illustrations to make them accessible, meaningful and memorable. *Note this episode is a repeat broadcast To download the free My Possible Self App: https://mypossibleself.app.link/podcast To follow My Possible Self on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mypossibleself To purchase 'A Toolkit For Your Emotions' on amazon: https://amzn.eu/d/aXJOfnI To follow Dr Emma Hepburn on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepsychologymum

We at Hate Expectations love when our friends bring episode ideas to us. Indeed, when our many time returning guest, Jane Hutchins, suggested The African Queen, we leapt at the chance to plunge into the classic C.S. Forester novel (1935) and its beloved John Huston directed film (1951). Who could resist nautical adventure through the heart of the jungles of Africa? Or Bogart and Hepburn heating up the screen? Seems like a no-brainer. You'll have to listen in to see how we felt: whether we ultimately were swept away by its charms or wanted to torpedo it. Either way, I can promise we enjoyed the journey of discussing it all with Jane.

https://notesonfilm1.com/2025/07/02/thinking-aloud-about-film-ritrovato-round-up-2025-with-pamela-hutchinson/ For this year's Ritrovato Round-Up we are joined by the witty, incisive and all-around fabulous Pamela Hutchinson, editor of the Silent London website, author of two marvellous BFI Classic monographs (The Red Shoes, Pandora's Box), producer of the Weekly Film Bulletin for Sight and Sound and one of the jurors for Ritrovato's DVD Awards since 2018. In the discussion that follows we touch on all the strands of the festival, praise Cecilia Cenciarelli for her programming, Mariann Lewinsky for her illuminating introductions and Ehsan Khoshbakht for his superb programme notes on Lewis Milestone. We touch on the Willi Forst and Nordic Noir programmes, so popular José couldn't get into any of them. We have a lively debate on Molly Haskell's Hepburn programme, agree on our love of Naruse, discuss how Comencini's Delitto de amore highlights issues of class and made us want to see more Comencini films and delight in the early cinema and silent cinema strands. Sumitra Peries' Gehenu Lamai (The Girls) is a film we all adored. We touch on memorable experiences, such as watching Coline Serrault introduce Trois hommes et un couffin at the Piazza Maggiore, or the incredible response to Chaplin's The Gold Rush, the impact of Silvana Mangano in Bitter Rice, the intensity of the colour in Duel in the Sun, or the spontaneous applause for Shirley MacLaine in Artists and Models.
Hepburn dazzles, Grant simmers, and Stewart steals a kiss — but we're asking what the movie does to its strongest character. Wit, weddings, and one quietly devastating rewatch.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Guys, the Giro is underway and that can only mean one thing; it's time for me to wheel out that classic old LITP story of the time I rode the Team Time Trial at the 2014 Giro with the Greenedge boys and we only went and bloody won it!...What do you mean I bring it up every year? Seriously, though, this is one of my favourite episodes we've ever made. I know some of you will have heard it before when it was first released during lockdown, but there's a lot of new listeners in the Pelo now who may not have heard me catching up with Orica Greenedge's ‘Class Of ‘14' Giro squad who took the win in the opening TTT in Belfast at the 2014 Giro d'Italia. This is a monster ep, with amazing stories from Svein ‘Sveino' Tuft, ‘Cam-a-carzi' Meyer, Michael ‘Bling' Matthews, Michael ‘Heppy' Hepburn, Pieter ‘Weendog' Weening, Brett ‘Burt' Lancaster, Matt ‘Whitey' White, and - of course - my old mate Luke ‘Durbo' Durbridge. What a line up?! I absolutely loved relistening to this, and reliving the memories from over 10 years ago. This was one of my best days on the bike, surrounded by an amazing group of guys who I'm still good mates with today. It's the first rest day of the 2025 Giro today, so this should keep you excited before the racing kicks off again in Italy tomorrow. Sit back, relax, and enjoy; I hope you love it. Cheers, Mitch
PopaHALLics #142 "Aren't You Somebody?"We know the face, but not the name, whether that's members of the Eagles (biography "Life in the Fast Lane") or comedian Martin Short being mistaken for a waiter (memoir "I Must Say"). This 2014 memoir is funny, heartfelt, and chock full of celebrities (from buddies like Steve Martin to cringey encounters with Sinatra, Hepburn, and Tony Bennett). It's surprisingly poignant, as Short recounts the loss of a beloved brother and his parents by age 20 and his wife Nancy's battle with cancer. The memoir was published seven years before "Only Murders in the Building" would make Short a TV star again.Music:PopaHALLics #142 Playlist (Eagles) features the California band's hits as well as music from Neneh Cherry (memoir "A Thousand Threads") and her talented family. Like everyone else on the Left, I grew up wanting to exist in the rarified air of NPR. It was, to me, like the green light at the end of Daisy's dock in The Great Gatsby: the place you don't belong but the only place you want to be.I was thrilled when NPR invited me to the studio in 2012 for an interview. I even took a picture of the parking lot—anything with NPR on it.I'd finally made it, ma—top of the world.I woke up with Morning Edition and spent the afternoon with All Things Considered. It required no effort at all. It was always on every time I got into my car and drove somewhere, and in Los Angeles, everyone drove everywhere.Long before controversial CEO Katherine Maher was hired at NPR, listeners were already dropping like flies. Any honest person knows that NPR changed dramatically. Even my sister, a die-hard Democrat, joked with me in 2020 that she had to stop listening because every episode seemed to be about a “transgender migrant crossing the border for an abortion in Texas.”Maher's testimony at the “Anti-American Airwaves: Accountability for the Heads of NPR and PBS” will be seen by most on the Left as something along the lines of the House of Unamerican Activities in the 1950s and for similar reasons. Here, in the most viral exchange, Rep Gill even brings up Marxism.Like this moment, this hearing will be shape-shifted into a story that paints them as the victims and their side as the side standing up for free speech. The truth? They abandoned objectivity long ago, if they ever had it at all. I used to think they did. I was a faithful believer in people I thought had our best interests at heart. It took me years to understand why the Republicans have been complaining about them since their inception.Maher is a stunner, even at her age, with her platinum blonde bob and Hepburn cheekbones. She's probably not used to being dragged before a tribunal and made to answer for how NPR has abused the public's trust. But abuse it, they have. She might not also be aware that this is a revolution. No, heads didn't roll, but the 2024 election was a triumph of the people, by the people, and for the people—a revolution made possible only by Donald Trump's alliance with Big Tech and Elon Musk especially. To the Left, in their delusional fever dreams, they are the oppressed side. They're the #resistance like back when German tanks rolled into Paris. But they're not. They never were. They were always the empire. How do I know? Because I was one of them. I was an enthusiastic participant in the movement that would overtake much of American society, grow its power with the rise of the internet, and spread its fundamentalism like a fungus, one that is now killing its host.A revolution because there was no other option.A revolution because the kids were at risk.A revolution because this isn't a country that likes to be ruled over by an elite, out of touch aristocracy and never has. This film was a passion project for George Cukor and Katharine Hepburn. RKO let them do it, but the studio was sorry, when the movie confused audiences in 1935, and made no money. It has attained a bit of a cult following since. Hepburn and her father, Miracle on 34th Street’s Edmund Gwynn are fleeing trouble, and Sylvia dons a male disguise to help her dad. They meet con man Cary Grant, and hilarity and awkward moments of gender identity ensue. Shelly Brisbin with Nathan Alderman, Randy Dotinga and Micheline Maynard.

In the late 1940s, as the country was moving to the right and there was pressure on Hollywood to do the same, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and John Huston all protested HUAC in ways that damaged their public personas and their ability to work in Hollywood. Hepburn's outspokenness resulted in headlines branding her a "Red" and, allegedly, audiences stoning her films. Bogart and Huston were prominent members of the Committee For the First Amendment, a group of Hollywood stars who came to Washington to support the Hollywood Ten -- and lived to regret it. With their career futures uncertain, the trio collaborated on the most difficult film any of them would ever make, The African Queen.
