"Antecedentes de la música drone" es el título del triple programa monográfico que se inicia con este espacio, y en el que presentaremos algunas manifestaciones musicales que pudieron influir en la aparición de un género (o, más bien, una práctica compositiva) caracterizado por la presencia de sonidos que se mantienen durante largos periodos de tiempo y que, en su caso, evolucionan muy lentamente. A menudo, esos sonidos estáticos ocupan el registro más grave y, sobre ese bordón o nota pedal (expresión que nos permitiría referirnos en nuestro idioma a esta práctica como "música pedal", prescindiendo de anglicismos), los parciales superiores que completan su espectro armónico van experimentando diferentes variaciones tímbricas, texturales, rítmicas, etc. Antes de abordar la escucha de ciertos usos precursores de estas técnicas compositivas, en el inicio de esta emisión repasamos algunas de las figuras más representativas en el ámbito de la llamada "drone music", al tiempo que presentamos algunos fragmentos representativos de su trabajo (y rememoramos también las apariciones de estos autores en pasadas ediciones de Ars Sonora -para los oyentes que deseen profundizar en sus respectivas creaciones a través del podcast de nuestro espacio-). Nombres como los de Phil Niblock (con piezas como "Poure", que nos acompaña en el inicio), La Monte Young o Alvin Lucier -fallecido el pasado 1 de diciembre- se entremezclan con los de compositoras tan reconocidas como Eliane Radigue (de quien presentamos un fragmento de "Koume"), Pauline Oliveros o Ellen Fulman (cuya "Bass Song" también recordamos), en una clara muestra de cómo las artistas mujeres han destacado especialmente en este terreno creativo. Tras ese panorama, dedicamos este primer capítulo del monográfico a presentar diferentes composiciones tradicionales procedentes del subcontinente indio. En ellas es frecuente el uso de una nota pedal que sirve como base de la interpretación musical. El instrumento encargado de esta función suele ser la tampura (también conocida en nuestro idioma como tambora), instrumento de cuerda pulsada de la misma familia de la vina, que está relacionada con la diosa Saraswati, patrona y musa de las Bellas Artes en el panteón hindú. Los ejemplos que escuchamos van desde la música carnática de Veenai Dhanammal (1867-1938) hasta el trabajo de los músicos de la compañía del bailarín Uday Shankar, hermano mayor de Ravi Shankar, el conocido virtuoso del sitar (cuya música también ofrecemos), pasando por la audición de otro resultado de la influencia de estos creadores en canciones de The Beatles como "Within You Without You", integrada en el disco "Sgt. Sanna Almajedi talks to composer and trombonist Peter Zummo, and Eve Essex, a musician who performs with alto saxophone, piccolo, voice and electronics. The music heard in this episode was recorded live during the fifth edition of Satellite at Bar Laika on March 12, 2019, featuring Zummo and Essex.  Peter Zummo is a composer and trombonist whose music encompasses both the contemporary-classical and vernacular genres. His work is informed by five decades of realizing the work of other composers, poets, bandleaders, choreographers, directors, and filmmakers. The way in which he maneuvers the contemporary trombone is genre non-conforming, and still finds a place in any genre.  Zummo worked closely with Arthur Russell, appearing on many of his recordings. He has also collaborated with Pauline Oliveros, Phil Niblock, and Yasunao Tone. His music has been released by Foom, Optimo Music, and Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Eve Essex is a Brooklyn-based musician who performs with alto saxophone, piccolo, voice and electronics, harnessing elements of classical, drone, free jazz, and distorted pop. She has performed as Das Audit (with guitarist Craig Kalpakjian), as well as in trios Hesper (with James K and Via App), and HEVM (with MV Carbon and Hunter Hunt-Hendrix). She has also collaborated extensively with Juan Antonio Olivares as installation/performance-art duo Essex Olivares. Her first solo album, Here Appear, was released by Soap Library (cassette) and Sky Walking (LP) in 2018. She also appears on Pan’s compilation Mono No Aware. Select solo performances include Artists Space, Outpost Artists Resources, Safe Gallery, and Meakusma Festival. Satellite is a monthly experimental music series curated by Sanna Almajedi.

Bio: Maria is a New York-based abstract turntablist and multidisciplinary artist from Peru by way of Houston, Texas. She has pioneered a singular style of improvisation on the turntable involving perfect and destroyed vinyl and styli. She is an author, a teacher, a DJ, and an outspoken critic of the institutions of fine art of which she finds herself, against all odds, a part-- this latter characteristic is amusingly exemplified in her recent work in painting, which she expands upon in this episode. Recording Notes: This interview was recorded at Cafe le Gamin in Maria’s rapidly gentrifying Greenpoint neighbourhood. We met for lunch while Maria was briefly home in New York between stints in Italy, Germany, Istanbul and the Rauschenberg Captiva Residency. The chance, or accident, so fundamental to Maria’s practice turns up here in the shape of the clatter of cutlery, the city’s drony din, and the cafe’s regular custom. I want to warmly welcome Cale Weir back to the pod, who joined me in producing the music for this episode. We worked from Maria’s autodidactic Masters Thesis, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable. Despite her kindly encouragement of our efforts, Maria may not totally approve of the results, nor of the liberties we took in attempting to execute her techniques (I cannot get away from my little digital modulators, and Cale was working with his antiquated CD-Js) but that we took her instructions in our new direction would seem to be in keeping with the spirit of her work. Truth be told, I just haven’t got the manual dexterity Maria has to grapple with the fragility of the turntable as instrument.
