Next in our mixtape series comes with Prairie, the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs who has prepared a mix to submerge our minds into a semi-awake state, where senses are heightened and we experience sound and reality in a different way. Jacobs, with his Prairie output, has recently published a new album in Denovali Records "And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me", his second release on the experimental German label. With a sound that some have acquainted to a space between Bohren & der Club of Gore and Sunn O))), his releases are infused of a vivid cinematographic narrative. Sonic landscapes provided by layers of synths and instruments that remind us of the passing of time and the persistence of memory. "And the bird said", Jacobs says, "was inspired by the silence of the birds, the tone between a mother and her daughter, the Sandsnipe twins, constant wailing sirens... the memory of a Vangelis track". Composed in several locations from urban in the city, or in his studio Les Lacs and in the mountains of the French Cévennes, the producer integrates his various recording locations into his sound design, creating this ample and revealing sound, resembling the sights of vast fields in the early morning hours, when life is awaking surrounded by a layer of unknown mystery yet to be unveiled. Jacobs also works as a music consultant and as a curator of experimental and electronic music for various venues, events and festivals, among which the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (Bozar) and he is also the founder of Le Bureau Electronique, a platform dedicated to the promotion of leftfield music and arts in Belgium. This mixtape consists of various approaches to sound and music, where the artist has combined the different forms of production of the tracks in order to create a feeling of a narcotic or hypnagogic state: "It is a state I particularly enjoy, it enables surprising auditory connections and stimulates the imagination. I have chosen the tracks according to the connections they created with one another, like a cadavre-exquis – or how you can fall into a cascade of images or ideas just before you start dreaming". Tracklist (in order of appearance) Plastikman, Robert Ashley, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mt Gemini, Aymeric de Tapol, Francisco Lopez, Simon Fisher Turner, Lionel Marchetti, Kate Carr, Lawrence English, Niedowierzanie, Ernest Hoood
In this episode of The Reality Dysfunction, our dysfunctional gang talks with three term state of Michigan House representative Vanessa Guerra. Representative Guerra, (D-95th district) won the August 4, primary against four time incumbent Saginaw County Clerk Michael Hanley. Guerra won by a landslide 6000 votes in largely rural county in which Mexicans make up eight percent of the population. The gang has many questions for Guerra and she has lots of advice for young people (and old) about running for office and how and when to get involved. In addition to Rep. Guerra our usual dysfunctional crew of Alexandra Lozada (NY), Juan Carlos Vega (Washington DC), Rainer Delgado (MI), Daniel Soza (MI), Francisco Lopez, (CA), Carlos Hernandez (TX) and Ernesto Mireles (AZ). Also joining us for the podcast are Maria Zavala Paredes, Carolina Sanchez and Cecilia Olvera.
Welcome to episode 7 of Anechoic Chamber, free form audio from the margins of arts and culture. Our guest for this edition is Francisco López, who as of this recording is celebrating 40 years of what he has called sonogenic composition. Over this time, López has carved out an almost unparalleled reputation as a bioacoustic researcher and as a champion of sound's phenomenological, non-representational qualities, while being critical of conceptual uses for the same. Equally at home using sonic material from the rainforest or the factory, while also being equally adept at exploring the qualities of overwhelming noise or seductive silence, López remains one of the principal authorities on the extremes of sonic perception and how they inform all that lies in between. Though he is often noted for the supposed "novelty value" accorded to his rejection on the concert stage, this is only one aspect of a fully integrated philosophy of sound, which we hope to unveil in this broadcast. All compositions by the artist; available on the limited edition USB card album "A Bunch of Stuff 1980-2020: 40 Years of Sonogenic Composition" artist links: www.franciscolopez.net Anechoic Chamber links donate via PayPal: tbwb@protonmail.com all other inquiries: core@tbwb.net

This episode of The Reality Dysfunction is a wide ranging conversation on the relationship between the Xicano/Latino community and Biden, Obama and Trump. The question is are we even a consideration anymore in this presidential contest? Or, even more importantly, have we ever been a consideration to any party for any presidential election? In one corner we have the incumbent republicans and in the other is the challenging democrats. Are Latinos once again standing in limbo having to choose between the lesser of two evils? Come listen to our expert panel of Rainer Delgado, Alexandra Lozada, Francisco Lopez, Magda Sanchez and myself Ernesto Mireles. If anyone out there has ideas for podcast subjects or wants to be a part of that discussion hit us up at fightforxicanostudies@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter @ernestomireles.

You’ve probably heard that gentrification changes neighborhoods for the worse: first come the hipsters and then the bankers. Soon, the neighborhood is overrun with dog spas and wine bars, and the original residents are nowhere in sight. But what does the science say? And, is there anything good about gentrification? We speak to Prof. Lance Freeman, Asst. Prof. Rachel Meltzer and Nicole Mader to find out. Check out the transcript right here: http://bit.ly/2VQJsgp UPDATE 10/23/18: An earlier version of this episode misstated number of calls in our 311 analysis as "over 900,000." While the analysis started with over 900,000 calls, the number of calls over 6 years was a bit over 600,000. We've updated the episode to reflect that. Selected references: Lance’s study on displacement in gentrifying neighborhoodsRachel’s studies on jobs and businesses in gentrifying neighborhoods Nicole’s study on what’s happening with public schools with gentrification This study by NYU’s Furman study which has all sorts of stats on gentrifying neighborhoodsCredits: This episode was produced by Meryl Horn and Kaitlyn Sawrey with help from Wendy Zukerman, along with Rose Rimler and Odelia Rubin. We’re edited by Blythe Terrell. Fact checking by Michelle Harris. Mix and sound design by Emma Munger. Music by Emma Munger and Bobby Lord. A huge thanks to Kurtis Melby who helped us with the 311 call analysis. For this episode we also spoke to Associate Professor Japonica Brown-Saracino, Professor Elvin Wyly, Associate Professor T. William Lester, Assistant Professor Stacey Sutton, Amy Collado, Assistant Professor Francis Pearman, Dr Miriam Zuk and, Lorena Lopez. A big thanks to Francisco Lopez, Amber Davis, the Zukerman fam and Joseph Lavelle Wilson.
Bio: Maria is a New York-based abstract turntablist and multidisciplinary artist from Peru by way of Houston, Texas. She has pioneered a singular style of improvisation on the turntable involving perfect and destroyed vinyl and styli. She is an author, a teacher, a DJ, and an outspoken critic of the institutions of fine art of which she finds herself, against all odds, a part-- this latter characteristic is amusingly exemplified in her recent work in painting, which she expands upon in this episode. Recording Notes: This interview was recorded at Cafe le Gamin in Maria’s rapidly gentrifying Greenpoint neighbourhood. We met for lunch while Maria was briefly home in New York between stints in Italy, Germany, Istanbul and the Rauschenberg Captiva Residency. The chance, or accident, so fundamental to Maria’s practice turns up here in the shape of the clatter of cutlery, the city’s drony din, and the cafe’s regular custom. I want to warmly welcome Cale Weir back to the pod, who joined me in producing the music for this episode. We worked from Maria’s autodidactic Masters Thesis, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable. Despite her kindly encouragement of our efforts, Maria may not totally approve of the results, nor of the liberties we took in attempting to execute her techniques (I cannot get away from my little digital modulators, and Cale was working with his antiquated CD-Js) but that we took her instructions in our new direction would seem to be in keeping with the spirit of her work. Truth be told, I just haven’t got the manual dexterity Maria has to grapple with the fragility of the turntable as instrument. In this interview, I sat down with filmmaker and former human rights attorney Michèle Stephenson. She tells us about her migration journey as a Haitian-Panamanian woman and the family dynamics she experienced growing up. Michèle shares her unconventional path toward filmmaking and co-founding the Brooklyn based Rada Film Group with her husband Joe Brewster. Michèle emphasizes the need to complicate narratives as a filmmaker of color and to question those who consider themselves allies. As she says, “Practicing the art form is a statement of resistance itself." And that, “I want the stories that I tell to be disruptive.” Adding, “The statement at the end of the story has got to somehow disrupt the system.” Michèle also acknowledges that “I want the process to be as important as the end product, as the end of the story itself.” And that, “I think by taking a critical look at ourselves and our subjects… we are complicating our humanity.” She mentions how “Transformation and impact happens in process.” Adding that “The world works in a circular way, not in a linear fashion.” Please enjoy Part 1 and Part 2 will be released later this month. Finally - the second half of the pilot episode for Sounds Curious! We split the pilot in two halves after hitting some serious technical difficulties - necessitating a complete upgrade of studio hardware and software halfway through an episode... FUN! Anyone who works with the arts and technology understands why we're sometimes reluctant to upgrade.... Anyway, lots of fun in this second half of the pilot. More musical tracks, including "Like Lisa" (check out the track on the banshee media soundcloud page, or over at http://www.reneetcoulombe.com) A big thank you to the folks over at http://www.aporee.org/maps, and radio aporee, for hosting so many incredible field recordings that we are addicted to! Today's is by Jeremy Hegge, and is called "Leaving our microphones by a waterhole at night" and was recorded at Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa. Recording made during the 'Sonic Mmabolela' residency organized by Francisco Lopez and James Webb. My apologies for mis-stating that it was Mozambique in the episode - did too much listening today and got a bit confused, my extreme bad. More information about this and all our episodes can be found at http://www.bansheemedia.com and look for the podcast page. We try and get show notes up within a few days of each episode. A big shout out to Pauline Oliveros, and to Deep Listeners everywhere, for all you do!

It wasn’t the big names we have all hear about in books that were now exploring, or re-exploring the country, no it would be miners looking for that next bonanza of silver or religious figures expiring to convert the natives. Ibarra’s uncle had already made in big, now it would be his turn. Exploring northern Mexico he would establish a new region, Nueva Vizcaya along with new mines, as well as creating new towns. Next onto the scene came Fray Agustin Rodriquez, Juan de Santa Maria and Francisco Lopez. They would give their lives for what they believed in. Don Antonio Espejo and Padre Bernardino Beltran along with soldiers and native servants headed out to follow in their footsteps. Their journey, for the most part, crossed the path of many friendly Indian tribes and witnessed many established pueblos. The Spanish were introducing themselves to the natives of Arizona and New Mexico.

Have you considered telling the people you lead about the mistakes you’ve made? On this show, why you lead better when you share your mistakes. “Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.” -Dale Carnegie Here are the benefits to talking about your mistakes with others: You get people’s attention. You open the door for people to be more willing to accept coaching. You give people a realistic path of what it looks like to learn how to lead. It reminds you what it was like to learn that skill in the first place. It keeps you humble. Two words of caution: Make sure you share real mistakes you’ve made. Sadly, not every organization values this kind of transparency. Be smart about the politics where you are.
