Inhabiting the delicate space between immersive ambient soundscapes and experimental fieldwork. For this week's Monday Is OK mixtape we welcome Zurich-based artist Philipp Stolberg, whose new album “The Dog Under the Lantern” (released his month), us a multimedia project exploring ambient, liminal spaces with cyanotype prints. The album focuses on themes of light and darkness, solitude and movement, wilderness and domestication through minimal, textured compositions. While Stolberg's roots lie in house music, this work concentrates on recycled church music and field recordings, influenced by artists like Nicolas Jaar, Fennesz, and Tim Hecker. The project represents “a deliberate exercise in minimalism, where each element serves a specific purpose.” Full interview: https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/philipp-stolberg-the-monday-is-ok-mix/

We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. Best known for albums like Radio Amor, Ravedeath 1972, Harmony in Ultraviolet, and his most recent project, No Highs, @TimHecker has always been interested in going beyond the superficialities of ambient — preferring to craft music that challenges, confuses, enthralls, and excites. His creative process reflects this, often including bleeding channels, feedbacking pieces, pitch shifting, noise, and distortion. His live shows, meanwhile, can be flooded with darkness or cloaked in fog. In this conversation, Tim and I discuss his musical philosophy and love of creative and artistic dissonance, and the inherent challenges in making music that isn't always easy. ++ Music: "Monotony" - Tim Hecker (2023) "In The Fog" - Tim Hecker (2011) "Chimeras" - Tim Hecker (2006) Follow AIR Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: https://airpodcast.substack.com/

What the H? Exactly. The award-winning* Lickers discuss some of their favorite records filed under the letter H. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2023, idiotic, introverted hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-third episode.

Today, we're talking about the latest film from director Brandon Cronenberg, Infinity Pool, another in a series of cinematic provocations from the son of acclaimed body-horror maestro David Cronenberg. While his works travel along similar roads -- the alienation of the self from the human body, how class intersects with violence -- the younger Cronenberg twists the visceral knife even further in parts, trafficking further in extremity and seeing how that further warps his film's reflections of humanity.   In Infinity Pool, that takes the form of a blood-soaked bacchanal on a mysterious island nation frequented by rich tourists, who can afford to literally get away with murder (by having a clone made of themselves to be executed in their stead). With the threat of consequence no longer looming over them, the characters of Infinity Pool sink into a (sometimes literal) orgy of depravity, as disorienting as it is compelling to watch.   Aiding in that dizzying psychedelia is the score by acclaimed experimental musician and producer Tim Hecker, who crafts a suitably disorienting, doomed sound constructed from crunchy samples and unexpected analog elements. He's a deeply thoughtful musician and theorist, as you'll hear, as we talk about building a "music ecology" for Infinity Pool's constructed setting, exploring the limits of the film's sonic nihilism, and more.   You can find Tim Hecker at his official website here.   Infinity Pool is currently playing in theaters. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.

Tim Hecker, one of the leading voices in experimental electronic music (sometimes referred to as "ambient") joins The Film Scorer Podcast! Tim and I primarily talk about his score to the new film Infinity Pool, a psychedelic, nasty ride with an equally wowing, disorienting score. Among the stranger aspects of the score is that Tim actually utilized the sounds of Mediterranean cicadas, spending hours trawling through YouTube for the perfect samples before eventually turning them into a sort of Baltic banjo in a Deliverance homage for the regressive, yet future-forward dystopian mythical island state on which the film takes place. We then get into, among other things, the problematic nature of the "ambient" genre label and our increasing disconnect with music. One note on this interview: after the introduction, it begins mid-conversation between Tim and I. Our pre-interview small talk started going too deep, so I felt the need to capture it and keep it going rather than abruptly stop it to start a more "formal" interview. You can find out more about Tim on his website. Infinity Pool is now available on demand and Tim's score, as well as many of his other works, is available digitally on all major platforms. Although the score is not available there, most of Tim's works are available directly through bandcamp.

On this new episode of Ghoul Pool we each discuss our thoughts on Brandon Cronenberg's long awaited, third feature length film Infinity Pool. Starring Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård with an excellent score by Tim Hecker. James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ghoulpool/support

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Fissure is a piece of electronic music that incorporates synths, electric guitars, flute and drum samples, and a field recording of two icebergs colliding off Antarctica. I was drawn toward this particular field recording because of the intense and very dense rhythms produced by the two icebergs as they clatter off one another. I immediately started to imagine this cacophony emerging within a dense drone piece, the shuddering delay of synths and guitars giving rise to the almighty clattering of ice.  "I wanted to conjure up a sense of both space and dread, so drew on the musical structures and techniques of electronic composers such as Fennesz and Tim Hecker, carving out sonic space only to fill it with highly processed instruments and granular effects that decay certain pitches into the fuzz of white noise. The icebergs themselves come into the piece at around the halfway point. The music builds in intensity, then suddenly drops away for a second, and the icebergs finally appear alongside a distorted bass line. Initially I present the field recording as I found it - or a portion of it at least - and then later slow it down and remove a large selection of frequencies, making it less intense as the piece winds down into silence."   Colliding icebergs reimagined by Christopher McAteer. Part of the Polar Sounds project, a collaboration between Cities and Memory, the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). I'm still swamped with work, especially now that the semester has begun. New episodes will arrive later this fall. Until then, here is another bonus mix. It's probably my favorite mix I've ever done, made for Secret Thirteen, originally published in December 2014. S13 founder Justinas Mikulskis writes: “Secret Thirteen 139” is a picturesque and unique mix composed by Joseph Sannicandro. This mix is like a truly precious musical treasure every die-hard music lover could be searching for ages. In this over 1 hour long musical mosaic Joseph connects 55 pieces by his beloved and inspirational artists such as Tim Hecker, Vladislav Delay, Jon Hassell, Giuseppe Ielasi, Hue, Nicola Ratti, Machinefabriek, Klaus Schulze, MB, Steve Roden and many others, to form a complex, but at the same time a delightful soundscape. The opening and closing recordings by his The New Objective project tightly binds the overall mix's concept and mood. The mix radiates a strange musical luminosity, which guides the mind and the soul to the pure infinite satisfaction even when it is played in complete darkness. Divine ambiance, unexpected twists between music genres, fluid melodies and harmonious and thoughtful attitude to even the smallest details bring this mix to another dimension, a dimension where the nature meets man and his fundamental desire to perceive cosmos. As Joseph whispered, the mix could stand in parallel with Giuseppe Penone's metaphorical sculpture “The Hidden Life Within“. And it's quite a good example, because both, mix and sculpture, are based on the magical and fantastic groundwork, also the form, which could not be replicated. In the beginning we asked Joseph to interpret the outer space theme with his mix through his own perspective, but in the end the recording expanded into a much deeper, more metaphysical exploration of the whole universe with all it's phenomenons and wonders. Please, take a moment to read Joseph's keen comment about the mix. Zero Hour, as you may remember, was one of the organizations that launched the impactful Youth Climate March in July of 2018. Elsa attends classes at Howard University, She has been honored by Grist Magazine one their Top 50 Fixers for 2019. For this Hottest On Record, we have Jim Santo- a man with a guitar and a plan who has been rambling through the NYC music scene for the past 4 decades, playing in bands that one would call power pop, post-punk, art rock, no wave and chamber pop. Santo, primarily guitarist extraordinaire, is also a composer. His latest design is an amazing textural and avant garde instrumental opus called The Siberian Traps/An Extinction Fable, just on his long standing Dive Records. The album, his first homespun production, finds influence in a number of post-rock & electronic artists -- Fennesz, Tim Hecker, GAS, Abul Mogard, Facs, Kelly Lee Owens, Cate LeBon, etc. As well as timbres and tones of the outside world. Says Jim, “At that time, I wasn't thinking about an album, let alone an instrumental concept album about human extinction! i had made some offhand remarks about making an album about the end of the world, and had registered a domain name for an imaginary band called The Siberian Traps**, but that was the extent of it.”But as it did for many, the pandemic came along and changed everything. His neighborhood in Queens was the epicenter of the first terrifying explosion of COVID-19 in America. Most of the album was recorded in the early days of the lockdown, which is directly expressed in particular songs on the album, including his offered track, “Humanity.”

Looking back over the last six years of mixes, the piano has been the featured instrument in many of the the tracks.  I guess it goes all the way back to Ambient #1 : Music for Airports.  The piano is a perfect instrument for the contemplative, ambient music in the mixes found here. As far as I can tell, I've done four mixes devoted exclusively to the piano.  They are... 1) Piano Mix 2) Piano Mix 2007 3) Antique Sunlight 4) pno 2010 This fifth installment, "asleep at the piano," is very similar to the others.  Although this one may be a bit more ambient in nature. I was happy to squeeze in two tracks related to Harry Towel, the man behind the brilliant net label Audio Gourmet.  The first by Talvihorros is from the 2011 Audio Gourmet release "Just a Moment" which you can find here...Just a Moment.  The other cut is from Harry's recording artist guise, Spheruleus.  The track, Blueprint, is from his album on Tessellate Recordings called Cyanometry.  You can find that one here...Cyanometry at Bandcamp.  You can find some of Harry's excellent mixes on Mixcloud here...Spheruleus on Mixcloud and here...Groundingsounds on Mixcloud.
