Playlist: Seven Steps to Heaven Miles Davis (trompet), Ron Carter (bas), Anthony Williams, Frank Butler (drums), Herbie Hancock, Victor Feldman (piano), George Coleman (tenorsax), Nefertiti Miles Davis (trompet), Wayne Shorter (tenorsax), Tony Williams (drums), Ron Carter (bas), Herbie Hancock (piano) Boplicity Miles Davi (trompet), Lee Konitz (altsax), Gerry Mulligan (baritonsax), John Lewis (piano), Kenny Clark (drums), Nelson Boyd (bas)J.J. (drums), John Scofield (gitaar), Robert Irving III (keyboards), Round Midnight Miles Davis (trompet), John Coltrane (tenorsax), Cannonball Adderly (altsax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bas), Philly Jo Jones (drums) Jam Session Miles Davis (trompet), Michel Legrand (piano), Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Kenny Garrett (sax), Mark Rivett (gitaar), Alphonse Mouzon, Harvey Mason (drums), Benny Reitveld (bas) Een paar bespiegelingen…

Episode 19: Pete Christlieb is a legendary saxophonist whose powerful sound and fearless improvisation continue to shape both jazz and commercial music. He rose to international prominence as a longtime featured soloist with the Doc Severinsen–led Tonight Show Band, where his commanding tenor voice and electrifying presence became instantly recognizable. Christlieb's recording legacy includes some of the most iconic saxophone moments in popular music, including his lyrical solo on “Deacon Blues” by Steely Dan and his elegant playing on “Unforgettable” by Natalie Cole. Equally respected in the jazz world for his collaborations with Warne Marsh and Chet Baker, Christlieb continues to perform and inspire, embodying a rare blend of virtuosity, soul, and authenticity that resonates across generations.►about Pete Christlieb: https://petechristlieb.com/?utm_source=chatgpt.com►Key Moments:0:00 - Introductions1:47: Drag racing, Valley College (Los Angeles), First road gig with Si Zentner6:00: The art of playing dance music9:01: Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Ray Brown…16:50: Las Vegas, Jerry Gray, Tex Beneke, Peggy Lee, Lou Levy26:00: Cannonball Adderley30:30: Louie Bellson, Woody Herman31:50: Tom Scott, Glenn Campbell Show, and Marty Paich…34:24: “Play horn, get check”41:20: Snooky Young, The Tonight Show…, and Steely Dan44:45: “Deacon's Blues”51:13: Warne Marsh collaboration1:00: Violin to saxophone…1:05:35: Saxophone sounds…Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt…1:13:35: The pinnacle is the next gig, payola, and back to the Warne Marsh collaboration, back to Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show…1:26:00 New chapter of life in Washington1:28:00 Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Michael Brecker, and woodwind doubling…1:37:00 Closing graitude►Follow John Daversa Online:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johndaversa/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnDaversaMusic/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/johndaversamusicWebsite: http://www.johndaversa.com ►CreditsHost and Producer: John DaversaVideo Capture: Yang YangAudio Capture: Yang YangVideo and Audio Editing: Izzi GuzmanGraphic Design: Izzi GuzmanRecorded in Coral Gables, FL, November 18, 2024Support the show►CreditsHost and Producer: John DaversaVideo: Max Nierlich Audio: Dudley MerriamAdditional Audio: Jake SondermanVideo and Audio Editing: Yang YangIzzi Guzman: Graphic DesignRecorded in Miami, FL►Music"The John Daversa Podcast""Moonlight Muse""Junk Wagon" All compositions composed and arranged by John DaversaDaversafications Publications (ASCAP)

Before Kind of Blue, a 21-year-old Miles Davis was already reshaping jazz with Birth of the Cool. In this episode, we explore how Miles teamed up with arranger Gil Evans and a chamber-like nonet to craft a sound full of singable melodies, tightly arranged horns, and forward-thinking restraint. With French horn in the mix, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis' arranging touch, and Lee Konitz's lyrical solos, we unpack why this album – recorded in 1949-1950 and released years later – still lives up to its name.ABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.

Gerry Mulligan (born April 6, 1927) is possibly the best known baritone saxophonist in jazz, but he has also recorded on soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet and piano. He is a prolific composer and arranger, contributing scores to the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool nonet, the Claude Thornhill and Stan Kenton bands, and his own Concert Jazz Band in the early 60s and 80s. His innovative piano-less quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker was the accidental result of the piano having been put into storage at the club where the group made its debut, and the group's spare, lyrical, contrapuntal style immediately became emblematic of the west coast jazz style.

Una biografía coral' de Julia Balckburn (Libros del Kultrum) escuchamos a 'Lady Day' en grabaciones de finales de los años 30 principios de los 40 ('All of me', 'Until the real thing comes along', 'Me, myself an I', 'You go to my head', 'Night and day), de su disco de 1957 'Songs for distingué lovers' ('I didn´t know what time it was', 'Day in, day out') y del disco de 1959 'Lady in satin' ('For heaven´s sake', 'You don´t know what love is', 'You´ve changed', 'I´m a fool to want you'). Send us your thoughts! The members of all-star family jazz band The 3 Cohens — featuring Anat Cohen (clarinet), Avishai Cohen (trumpet) and Yuval Cohen (soprano saxophone) — have always taken time out from their ever-burgeoning careers as soloists and bandleaders to reconvene for music-making together. The siblings developed a deep musical bond growing up in Tel Aviv, with improvising together becoming second nature for them. The 3 Cohens recorded four studio albums over a decade: 2003's One, 2007's Braid, 2011's Family and 2013's Tightrope, with the last three released by Anzic Records, the indie label founded by Anat with kindred-spirit producer-collaborator Oded Lev-Ari. DownBeat put The 3 Cohens — with Anat the middle child to the elder Yuval and younger Avishai — on the cover of its January 2012 issue, hailing the trio's “chemistry, alchemy, telepathy.” Ten years on from that milestone, the 3 Cohens reunited for a live collaboration with Germany's lauded WDR Big Band (a Köln-based ensemble that has been performing jazz on West German Radio since 1957); the program showcased tailormade arrangements by Lev-Ari of compositions by himself and each member of The 3 Cohens, as well as two of their favorite classics: Gerry Mulligan's “Festive Minor” and the Louis Armstrong hit “Tiger Rag.” The performance was recorded for a very special live album, Interaction. To start off what is certain to be an interesting new year, Mike and Pat look at leader dates by the deepest of the regularly-used saxophones, the baritone. All four leaders are specialists on the unwieldly horn, though some do dabble in doubling from day to day. Two are composers and one has a crush on that greatest and most irascible of bassists, Charles Mingus. Serge Chaloff – BLUE SERGE; Fred Ho – MONKEY: PART ONE & TWO; Gerry Mulligan – AGE OF STEAM; Pepper Adams – PLAYS THE COMPOSITIONS OF CHARLES MINGUS.
