Welcome to our new series, “The Beat Goes On,” where we will celebrate the work and enduring influence of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and the other writers whom we identify as “The Beats.” - that crop of artists who worked to expand our consciousness, exploring the hidden possibilities of post WW2 America in the 1950s - Other significant names to be explored: Diane Di Prima, Tuli Kupferberg, Ed Sanders, Delmore Schwarz, Anne Waldman, Carolyn Cassidy, and many others. We will also include jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, whose sinuous Bebop lines influenced the expansive prose of Kerouac and poetry of Ginsberg, and comedians like Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Brother Theodore and Dick Gregory with their scathing critique and unmasking of our nation's hypocrisy beneath the self-deceptive rhetoric of American exceptionalism.  And, then there are their artistic children like Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits and Lou Reed…. The list goes on.First off: we need to define that confusing term “beat”… Once the satirists were able to pin them down, the Beats and their devotees were labelled “Beatniks” (a cold war epithet) and put into a farcical box. This is where I, as a child, first became aware of them through the character of Maynard G. Krebs on the Dobie Gillis show. The child-like, pre-hippie with the dirty sweatshirt and goatee, indelibly played by Bob Denver, later of Gilligan fame. He was a gentle figure of fun, not to be taken seriously. But, the truth goes so much deeper. Kerouac defined Beat as short for “beatitude” - a state of grace, a codex for the maturing “peace and love” Baby Boom generation coming up - those in search of existence's deeper meaning beyond the consumerist and war-like American culture being offered as our only option.Well, boy, do we need them now! HENRY MILLER INTERVIEWOur inaugural offering is a 1964 interview with the writer Henry Miller, of TROPIC OF CANCER, TROPIC OF CAPRICORN, and THE ROSY CRUCIFIXION TRILOGY fame, among many others. This is an insightful, in depth look at a artist of gargantuan influence. Miller was interviewed by Audrey June Wood  in Minneapolis during a speaking tour; he considered this interview to be one of his best. Miller discourses on some of his favorite books and authors and the struggle of writing well. It was released on Smithsonian/ Folkways Records.Strictly speaking, Miller was not a Beat - he preceded them, and out lived many of them, making it to 88 in 1980, but he was their spiritual and artistic pathfinder.Living hand to mouth, on the edge, abroad in Paris, writing free form in a raw, explicit, semi-autobiographical manner, telling the truth about sex, love, art, and struggle - he set the artistic compass for the Beats - as Dostoevsky and Walt Whitman had done before him. They are all part of a chain - a chain of searchers, and we are fortunate to have these lights to guide us on our own personal journeys to self realization. Please enjoy…THE BEAT GOES ON.

Join us in conversation with renowned songstress and author, Adele Bertei, as we weave our way through the life and times of Sinead O'Connor, courage in the name of justice, and the healing power of song. Adele is an anti-disciplinary author, director, performer, and composer currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. She is the author of Peter and the Wolves (Smog Veil, 2020), Why Labelle Matters (University of Texas Press, 2021), Twist: Tales of a Queer Girlhood (ZE Books, 2023), and Universal Mother (Bloomsbury 33 1/3, 2025).   Bertei was an original member of the critically lauded Contortions, produced by Brian Eno on the seminal No New York LP. Reading prose and poetry, she opened for writers such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker among many others. Bertei acted in several underground films, including a lead role in Born In Flames by Lizzie Borden.   Bertei was lead singer in the Bloods –America's first openly queer band of women, and has performed and recorded as a backing vocalist and touring vocalist for artists such as Tears for Fears, Thomas Dolby, Culture Club, Whitney Houston, Sandra Bernhard and Sophie B. Hawkins among many others.   New York City's Museum of Modern Art recently acquired films of Bertei reading her poem The Ragazzi Manifesto in 1978, and The Offenders by Scott and Beth B., where Bertei plays the lead.   She has created and facilitated songwriting workshops for homeless youth at My Friend's Place in Hollywood, and as a member of Wayne Kramer's Jail Guitar Doors, teaching songwriting to the incarcerated at the Twin Towers facility in downtown LA, and at Century Women's Regional Center at Lynwood, the largest women's jail in the nation.   Her next book, No New York: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene, will be released in early 2026 by Faber & Faber UK.   Thanks to my producer and editor, Lucas Bakker @Iamlucasbakker- whose original music and soundtrack weave the Blue Medicine Journal podcast all together!

Ohjaaja Luca Guadagninon (mm. Call Me by Your Name, 2017) Queer -elokuva pohjaa William S. Burroughsin tekstiin. Toimittajana on Pauliina Grym.

Quien sabe ?" (WSB "Le temps des assassins")

It's time for our semi-regular round up of all the entertainments we've been sticking into our brains for the past few weeks (and no laughing at the word “semi” please, we're all grown ups). This time round there's quite an international flavour as we discuss Soviet masterpiece “Viy” (1967); 2 movies from South Korea in modern classic “Train to Busan” (2016) and the “Tucker & Dale…” reimagining “Handsome Guys” (2024); fantastic Norwegian comedy “Troll Hunter” (2010); and the breathtaking 1922 Danish/Swedish silent documentary “Häxan” (and it's William Burroughs narrated 1968 version, “Witchcraft Through the Ages”). We also cover hit podcast “Broken Veil” (2025), 1982's “The Slumber Party Massacre”; “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” and “The Book of the Witch” (both 2024). Plus there are honourable mentions for “Battle Beyond the Stars”; and the anthology shows “Tales of Unease” and “Armchair Thriller”. There should be no need to prep for this ep, but listeners beware, as here be (possible) spoilers and (definite) swearing. Join us!

The Chelsea Hotel sits at 222 West 23rd Street in Manhattan…since it was completed in 1884, the place has been a hangout for some very colourful characters…most were New York eccentrics and bohemians who needed a place to live…but it also attracted some famous people. At one point or another, it was home to sci-fi writer Arthur C. Clarke who wrote a big chunk of “2001: A Space Odyssey” in his room…later, Stanley Kubrick, the producer of the movie version of the book would stay there… Other long-term guests included photographer Robert Mapplethorpe stayed there…so did included beat writer Jack Kerouac, playwrights Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Sam Shepherd, actors Dennis Hopper, Uma Thurman, Elliott Gould, and Jane Fonda…plus, for extra colour, poets William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg—not to mention Andy Warhol and some of his crew. The Chelsea was also a favourite haunt of musicians…Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Tom Waits, Jim Morrison, Jeff Beck, Joni Mitchell, Alice Cooper, the guys in Pink Floyd, and many, many others. But the most notorious floor was floor 1…it was designated the “junkie floor,” the place where guests with drug problems were placed so that staff could keep an eye on things… This was where ex-Sex Pistol Sid Vicious and his American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen checked in…they were given room 100. It was in that room Nancy died…it looks like she was murdered...but by whom? ...Sid was charged with killing her, but did he?. This is “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…and this time, it's the wild story of the death of Nancy Spungen and the questions that still remain decades later…around whether Sid Vicious actually did it.

Tangier was a magnet for artists, writers, musicians, and political exiles throughout the mid-20th century, amongst them the writers Paul Bowles and William Burroughs   From 1924 to 1956 the city operated as an international zone under the joint administration of several European powers. This status created an environment of legal ambiguity, which, combined with the city's strategic location at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, made it a haven for those seeking escape from the constraints of conventional society   The zone had  a sense of lawlessness and freedom, attracting a diverse mix of expatriates, spies, smugglers, and avant-garde intellectuals. The city's permissive attitude towards drugs, homosexuality, and radical political thought made it a particularly alluring destination for members of the counterculture.   Composer and writer Paul Bowles, settled there and drew members of the Beat Generation to the city to be inspired, to complete their projects and to live the Moroccan dream. Few lived in human dialogue with the locals, operating rather as economically priveleged colonial bohemians    William Burroughs' time in Tangier in the 1950s deeply influenced his novel Naked Lunch. Burroughs saw the city as a place where the constraints of Western morality could be discarded in favor of a more experimental and uninhibited lifestyle.   He christened it THE INTERZONE   Although the Tnagier International Zone officially ceased to exist in 1956, its mythos lived on in literature, music, and the enduring image of Tangier as a place where the world's outsiders could find a home   Multimedia artist and curator Abdelaziz Taleb, director of The Arab Media Lab Project has taken a deep dive into the Interzone - both its reality and its myth, exploring the blurred line between the two.  He came to the Bureau to talk about it, the often untold influence of Moroccans on the Beats,  and the mystery of Tangier.   For more on Aziz and the Interzone Project and Here   #counterculture, #thebeatgeneration, #thebeats, #tangier, #thetangierinternationalzone, #thetangierinterzone, #interzone, #burroughs, #bowles, #williamburroughs, #paulbowles, #heroin, #nakedlunch, #thearabmediaproject, #allenginsberg, #jakckerouac,#mohammedchakri, #bryingyson, #brianjones, #joujouka,#morocco

Each post features a fictional roundtable discussion with prominent artists, writers, and thinkers, examining what "youth" means from different perspectives. The café itself is depicted as a timeless and ever-changing space, adapting to each era's aesthetic and ideas. The consistent thread is the exploration of youth as not just a stage of life but a potent force for change, creativity, and self-discovery, with implications that extend far beyond the chronological period of being young.Main Themes and Ideas:Youth as a Transformative Force:Revolution and Rebellion: Many of the figures view youth as inherently linked to challenging the status quo. Elvis Presley equates youth with rebellion, "shaking things up," and breaking free from societal constraints. Similarly, the Romantic poets saw youth as a time for revolution and dreaming, as Shelley declares: “...youth became sacred—a time for rebellion, for dreaming of what the world could be.” The Beat Generation echoes this with Ginsberg's idea that youth involves "refusing to accept" the world as it is and using one's voice to challenge it. Maya Angelou also emphasizes youth as "the vanguard of change" and its role in the civil rights movement.Innovation and Creation: Ezra Pound emphasizes youth as a force for action and innovation, stating, "Youth is not a time for dreaming; it is a time for action.” This is later seen in Diane di Prima's view of youth as "creation" and the "spark that lights the fire." The slam poets in a later installment describe youth as "a storm, unpolished, untamed," a creative force needing to be expressed.Self-Discovery and Identity: Many speakers highlight youth as a time for exploring one's identity. Billy Joel sees youth as "figuring out who you are." H.D. views youth as "an inward motion—a retreat into the self" where one uncovers one's true nature. Even the TikTok generation is described as a space for "self-expression," where Alok says, “We don't need perfection; we need connection. Youth is the ‘FYP' of the soul.”Youth as a Feeling or State of Mind, Not Just an Age:Timelessness: Many figures move beyond a purely chronological definition of youth. Katy Perry says, "...it's about keeping that spark, no matter your age." Billy Joel says it's "a feeling, and music keeps that feeling alive." Keats calls it the "truest form of self" that stays with us as we age.The "Younger Self": The idea of a "Younger Self" is a recurring motif throughout the series. It represents a core part of an individual that embodies youthful traits like curiosity, passion, and a refusal to settle. Ginsberg describes the younger self as “the part of you that keeps searching, keeps seeing, keeps feeling”. The final note of the Romantics' discussion is a toast “to the Younger Self—not as an immature adult, not as a fleeting stage, but as the eternal fire within.”Connection to the Eternal: Yeats suggests youth is a "thread that binds us to the eternal," and that even as the body ages, the spirit remains connected to its younger self.Divergent Perspectives on the Nature of Youth:Skepticism and Challenges: While many see youth as positive, some voices offer counterpoints. T.S. Eliot describes youth as "a shadow," a period of "missed opportunities." William Burroughs views youth as "chaos," "a virus," and something that is consumed by the world. Joan Didion observes that much of the counterculture is "performance," though still meaningful. The Need for Growth and Balance: James Baldwin emphasizes that youth must "grow, learn, listen," and that while the counterculture aspired to freedom, they had to be cognizant of it for all people. Wordsworth warns against idealizing youth too much, noting it's but one stage in the growth of the human spirit. The Importance of Action: Pound notes that youth is wasted if spent "on longing and self-pity." He implores young people to "make it new" by creating and innovating and is an idea picked up by others later. The Role of Art and Expression:Music as a Time Machine: The musical epilogue shows how music is seen as a way to encapsulate and evoke the feeling of youth, with Billy Joel stating “Music is like a time machine—it takes you back to those moments..."Poetry as a Form of Revolution and Self-Expression: The posts feature various forms of poetry, from Romantic odes to Beat-era howls to the raw energy of slam poetry. The poetry itself is presented as a medium for youth to challenge norms and express their feelings. The slam poets see themselves "rewriting the world in the spaces we split." Amanda Gorman describes youth as a "lighthouse," using poetry to "shine a light."Modern Mediums as a Tool for Youth: TikTok is portrayed as a way for the modern generation to express itself, with its short, impactful videos. Lila's take in particular is about authenticity and capturing moments in time. The Legacy of Past Generations:The Ongoing Conversation: The recurring café setting illustrates that the conversation about youth is ongoing. The ghosts of the Romantic poets watch the Early Moderns and murmur their own insights, and then similar interactions can be seen between other groups. Each generation builds upon or challenges the ideas of those who came before.Carrying the Essence of Youth Forward: Even figures who have moved beyond their youth, such as Yeats, suggest that they still carry the "essence" of their younger selves, thus making youth a continuing factor in the development of their wisdom and purpose.Key Quotes:Elvis Presley: “Youth? Man, youth is rebellion. It's shaking things up—literally… It gave kids a voice, a way to say, ‘I'm here, and I ain't gonna sit still.'”Billy Joel: “Youth isn't just a stage in life. It's a feeling, and music keeps that feeling alive.”Garth Brooks: “For me, youth is about connection… It's about finding your people, your tribe, the ones who make you feel like you belong.”T.S. Eliot: “Youth is not a promise of becoming; it is the burden of what one might fail to become.”H.D.: “Youth is an inward motion—a retreat into the self, a peeling away of the layers imposed by society.”Ezra Pound: “Youth is not a time for dreaming; it is a time for action.”Jack Kerouac: “Youth, man—it's not something you grow out of. Justin Kuritzkes is the very talented writer behind Challengers, the Luca Guadagnino love triangle topping all sorts of end-of-year lists right now. The film is a tennis drama that declared game-set-and-match with critics and audiences alike on release in April, becoming a pop culture sensation in ways usually reserved for franchise films. Steeped in the messy wants and desires of three complicated characters, it's the sort of film that doesn't often dominate discourse. But that didn't stop Challengers becoming a phenomenon whose influence altered fashion, music, memes and more in 2024.Which for most writers would be enough achievement for one year thank you very much. But Justin's 2024 didn't end there. Queer – also directed by Guadagnino – is a William Burroughs adaptation that hit cinemas this month. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee – an American expatriate living in 1950s Mexico City who becomes obsessed with a younger man and goes on a quest into the jungle in search of unlocking drug-induced telepathic communication. Both films bear the hallmarks of a storyteller insistent upon bringing deeply nuanced explorations of flawed people searching for connection into multiplexes. In the double-bill episode you're about to hear, breaking down in spoiler-filled detail both acclaimed films, we discuss the overlaps between Challengers' carnal chaos and Charli XCX's Brat Summer, and what both say about this moment in the culture. We get into the tragic real-life death of Burroughs' partner, killed by the famed author in an supposed accidental shooting, that lends uncomfortable context to the story of Queer (and that Justin threaded into the movie). And you'll also hear his thoughts on whether both of these films could be a bellwether moment for movies. In a year that saw franchise after franchise struggle for critical applause and box office might, does the success of a movie like Challengers suggest that an appetite might be growing again for original stories? Now there's an exciting thought to carry into 2025.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In this episode of Spirit Box, I spoke with Vic Hyland, musician, teacher, and author, about creativity, NLP, and music's connection to magic. We delve into Vic's book 'Music Magic and NLP' wherein Vic shared his insights into the "cut-up" technique—a method popularised by David Bowie and William S. Burroughs—that involves rearranging words and phrases to unlock creative flow. This approach, Vic explains, extends beyond music and can spark ideas in all kinds of fields by tapping into the subconscious and reshaping our perceptions. We also discussed "sliding door moments," those pivotal life junctures where a single event can change everything, often guided by a mix of art, intention, and subconscious forces. Vic shared examples from music, showing how songs and symbols sometimes act as "hyper sigils"—shaping reality in unexpected ways. This led us to explore creativity's link to manifestation and consciousness. While I'm somewhat skeptical about manifesting through thoughts alone, Vic and I agreed on the importance of engaging the subconscious meaningfully. He emphasized that true creativity requires shifting between “gears” of consciousness, balancing conscious effort with subconscious flow. In the Plus show, we delved into the deeper purpose of creativity, beyond entertainment or self-expression. For both of us, art, music, and storytelling aren't just about creating; they're about transforming consciousness, connecting people, and deepening our understanding of the world. Vic illustrated this beautifully, noting that creativity was once about gathering together, changing perspectives, and tapping into something magical that logic alone can't touch. In a world increasingly skeptical of the mystical, it was refreshing to reflect on the power of art to reconnect us with wonder and a sense of the unseen. https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/09/26/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-2-drugstore-cowboy-1989/ We found DRUGSTORE COWBOY, Gus Van Sant's second feature, beautiful, imaginative and moving; a film that gets better with each viewing. We discuss Matt Dillon, so extraordinarily good looking and yet also so very believable as a ‘regular guy'; Tom Waits was the original casting and we talk about what Dillon brings to the role, his choices, and another possible connection to Van Sant, how he is also drawn to the marginal, the outsider; we talk about the experimental montages, clearly influenced by Anthony Balch's Fires Open Fire (1963) which evoke a subjective state of mind, usually drug fuelled, but which also act as a structuring device and help make the film aesthetically cohesive. We discuss continuities: time-lapse photography, Super8 filming, the Pacific Northwest, subject matter of marginals, outsiders, small time crims, junkies. We both agree that we don't like William Burroughs in the film, even though he was much praised upon its release. We discuss how Van Sant's second feature is an announcement of a major American director with a distinctive voice, a very particular style, a visual vernacular, a contiguous world from film to film, peopled by recurring figures, a darkly comic tone

From the 17th century, it has been a place on the edge, beyond the normal disciplines of government, a city of refuge and excitements where sex is cheap, drugs are plentiful and where the outcasts of the world can breathe easily. The golden years of Tangier began after World War I and barely survived World War II. Among those who sought sanctuary in or inspiration from this legendary city were Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Paul and Jane Bowles, Ronnie Kray, the unhappy Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton, Tennessee Williams, Joe Orton, Cecil Beaton and Truman Capote. It is this 'last resort of the living dead, alive but not madly kicking' which Iain Finlayson explores in his witty, enthralling book. Eamonn Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity (Hardback) For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary LIMITLESS, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity. This isn't 'biohacking,' it's science: a well-founded strategic approach to extending lifespan while improving our physical, cognitive and emotional health, making each decade better than the one before. With Outlive's practical advice and roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before. Stuart Monsters, Inc. Lovable Sulley (John Goodman) and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are the top scare team at MONSTERS, INC., the scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. When a little girl named Boo wanders into their world, it's the monsters who are scared silly, and it's up to Sulley and Mike to keep her out of sight and get her back home.

This week: I talk about the essence of truth in our modern, often deceptive world. I reflect on the instinctive human pursuit of truth, discussing how critical thinking is more vital than ever in navigating misinformation. I also explore the complexities of truth in the context of AI and the collective unconscious. I share my current reading list, which includes works on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as a biography of William Burroughs. I also muse on my recent decision to read the entire Bible. I wrap up with thoughts on letter writing, inspired by Hunter S. Thompson's prolific correspondence. Tune in for a philosophical journey through the quest for truth and the art of discernment.

Three years ago, at age 66, the Belgium-born writer and critic Lucy Sante—known for her award-winning essays, criticism, and books, including Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York (1991)—announced to a few dozen close friends that she was transitioning to womanhood. This news came following nearly four decades of publishing her work under the byline Luc Sante. In her new memoir, I Heard Her Call My Name (Penguin Press), which she discusses at length on this episode of Time Sensitive, Sante writes about the first six months of her recent transition, the decades-long silence that preceded it, and various piercing moments from her life that led up to it. She is also the author of books such as Nineteen Reservoirs (2022), The Other Paris (2015), and Folk Photography (2009), and her writing has appeared in publications including The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Artforum, and Vanity Fair. Across all of her work, Sante brings a searing, no-nonsense clarity and a photographic eye for detail. Also on this episode, Sante talks about why she thinks of the 1960s as “a kind of magic time,” her life-transforming literary journey, and her decision to open the floodgates of her womanhood.Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:[3:49] Lucy Sante[3:49] I Heard Her Call My Name[3:49] The Factory of Facts[6:27] Nineteen Reservoirs[6:27] Low Life[9:28] Histories of the Transgender Child[9:28] Jules Gill-Peterson[22:11] Tintin[24:07] Terry Southern[24:07] Writers in Revolt[24:07] Alexander Trocchi's Caine's Book[24:07] Allen Ginsberg's “Howl” [24:07] Peter Orlovsky[24:07] William Burroughs's Naked Lunch[24:07] Curzio Malapart's Kaputt[29:05] The New York Review of Books[34:23] Folk Photography[36:55] The Other Paris[38:04] Walker Evans[38:04] Robert Frank[46:10] Maybe People Would Be the Times[49:52] “The Invention of the Blues”[51:41] The Velvet Underground[51:41] Lou Reed[51:41] Andrew Wylie

The other is virtually unknown these days. For a period of time, William Burroughs and Brion Gysin shared what they called "The Third Mind," a collaborative process which saw both figures egging each other on to greater heights of inspiration and creativity. But what helped them during this process? Magic of course. Emerging in the conformist 1950s, the Beat subculture pushed back against corporatism and consumerism in favor of a contemplatively nonconformist lifestyle focused on art, poetry, jazz and “kicks.” The small circle of young writers at the core of this lit-erary movement—Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Neal Cassady—were all heavily influenced by the improvisation, illumination. and imagination they found in cannabis.  Among their most acclaimed and lasting works are Kerouac's generation-defining novel On the Road and Ginsberg's epic poem Howl. On this episode, Martin Torloff—author of Bop Apocalypse: Jazz, Race, the Beats and Drugs—explains just how central cannabis was as a creative tool for the Beats as they sought to bust through the conventions of both literature and society. And how along the way, they founded LeMar, America's first cannabis legalization organization.
