RadioA1A LIVE Sessions, Phil Stanley Take a listen to his first two albums: "Broadside" and "Everything Causes Cancer in California," both are a raucous sonic attack brought on by the lifestyles he traipsed through in America's Music City: Nashville, TN. "I hated that city, so I left," Phil bemoans. "Nashville just bastardized everything I was trying to do, made everything too complicated and too desperate. So I left," he continued. He says his style has always been folk music. Whether electric or not, each one of his songs is a folk song. But now he can do them on his terms, exploring the depths of his years-long traveling companion- an acoustic guitar named 'Bert.'"It had never appeared much on my previous works but now I can really dig into it. There's a tremendous depth, something brooding and heavy, like a big stone cathedral; it just seems to paint a more detailed image for my songs. It's also done wonders for my voice, I really wanted to move away from the nasal rasp of the past albums and now I have, I don't have to shout over a loud electric band."His new songs are taking a mellow edge- probably due to his recent transplant to the Florida Keys. They are softer and adorned with brighter colors. Phil says his next album, tentatively titled, 'Winter' will be out by the end of the year. A mixture of his rolling fingerstyle playing, reminiscent of his love for English folk, and this new wave of whatever effect the warmer weather of the islands will bring...
