Today we are joined by fan favorite Ondine Achampong, a World and European medalist for Great Britain who was a favorite to make the Paris Olympic team before an ACL injury took her out of contention just three months before the Games. Ondine shocked the gymnastics world last season when she worked her way into Cal's beam lineup around 10 months after tearing her ACL—an injury that takes most gymnasts at least a year to recover from. Now, heading into her sophomore season, she's ready to take on an even bigger role for a young and relatively inexperienced Cal team.In this episode, Ondine shares more about her recovery journey, how she handled the uncertainty of the offseason with so many changes, what led her to stay at Cal, and whether a return to elite gymnastics might be in her future.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo, Sammy S, Fabio B, & Kerry H!

Today, we're excited to be joined by Jennifer Williams — an elite gymnast from Sweden, a 2025 European Beam and Floor finalist, and an incoming freshman at Stanford University.Unfortunately, just a few days after we recorded this interview, Jennifer partially ruptured her PCL, a ligament in her knee. As a result, her elite season has sadly come to an end, and her NCAA season is now uncertain, depending on how her recovery progresses. This obviously wasn't the way we planned to start the episode, but we wanted to share that important update, especially since the interview includes discussions about her goals and plans for the remainder of the season. That said, we're still thrilled to share this conversation with you. We've been longtime fans of Jennifer's beautiful gymnastics, and this interview offers great insight into her journey so far — including highlights from her 2025 season, why she chose Stanford, and her ambitions to compete at the LA 2028 Olympics.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo & Sammy S!

You already know — we're huge Michigan fans, so we are especially excited about today's guest. Joining us is the brand new head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn.Maile has been a key part of the Michigan coaching staff for the past seven seasons — six as an assistant coach and one as a volunteer assistant. Before that, she was a gymnast at the University of Oklahoma, where she was an All-American on vault and floor, a two-time Big 12 vault champion, the NCAA runner-up on floor in 2014, and a member of two national championship-winning teams — including Oklahoma's very first NCAA title. After her competitive career, she transitioned into coaching, helping guide the Sooners to their third NCAA championship as a student assistant. My favorite fun fact about Maile (that I will say at every opportunity that I get) is that, to our knowledge, she is the only person to win an NCAA title as an athlete and a coach. She helped Oklahoma win its first title when she was an athlete in 2014 and then of course she helped Michigan win its first title as a coach in 2021. Now, she steps into the head coaching role following the legendary Bev Plocki, who led the program for 36 seasons. Maile joins us to talk about her vision for Michigan gymnastics as she leads the team into a brand-new era — right as the program enters its 50th year.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Lauren D, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M, kcmojojojo & Sammy S!

Michael #1: pyx - optimized backend for uv via John Hagen (thanks again) I'll be interviewing Charlie in 9 days on Talk Python → Sign up (get notified) of the livestream here. Not a PyPI replacement, more of a middleware layer to make it better, faster, stronger. pyx is a paid service, with maybe a free option eventually. Brian #2: Litestar is worth a look James Bennett Michael brought up Litestar in episode 444 when talking about rewriting TalkPython in Quart James brings up scaling - Litestar is easy to split an app into multiple files Not using pydantic - You can use pydantic with Litestar, but you don't have to. Maybe attrs is right for you instead. Michael brought up Litestar seems like a “more batteries included” option. Somewhere between FastAPI and Django. Brian #3: Django remake migrations Suggested by Bruno Alla on BlueSky In response to a migrations topic last week django-remake-migrations is a tool to help you with migrations and the docs do a great job of describing the problem way better than I did last week “The built-in squashmigrations command is great, but it only work on a single app at a time, which means that you need to run it for each app in your project. On a project with enough cross-apps dependencies, it can be tricky to run.” “This command aims at solving this problem, by recreating all the migration files in the whole project, from scratch, and mark them as applied by using the replaces attribute.” Also of note The package was created with Copier Michael brought up Copier in 2021 in episode 219 It has a nice comparison table with CookieCutter and Yoeman One difference from CookieCutter is yml vs json. I'm actually not a huge fan of handwriting either. But I guess I'd rather hand write yml. So I'm thinking of trying Copier with my future project template needs. Michael #4: django-chronos Django middleware that shows you how fast your pages load, right in your browser. Displays request timing and query counts for your views and middleware. Times middleware, view, and total per request (CPU and DB). Extras Brian: Test & Code 238: So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish after 10 years, this is the goodbye episode Michael: Auto-activate Python virtual environment for any project with a venv directory in your shell (macOS/Linux): See gist. Giselle was one of the athletes in the class of 2027 who stood out to us because she improved so much in just one year. It's pretty remarkable when you scroll through her Instagram and see the difference from one year ago to now — it's fair to say she had quite the glow-up!Last year, Giselle was training at a gym in Indiana, competing level 9, and didn't have the cleanest gymnastics. So, she packed her bags and moved to Ohio, hoping to take her gymnastics to the next level and get recruited. This year, at Level 10 Nationals, she finished 4th on vault with a beautifully stuck Yurchenko 1.5, 10th on floor, and 7th all-around — a performance that definitely caught the attention of some of the top programs in the country. This week we are joined by Addi Doan, an incoming freshman at Texas Woman's University. Addi reached out wanting to share her recruiting experience with our listeners because she overcame significant adversity to get where she is today. She wants the future generation to know that you don't need a long Level 10 or elite resume to receive interest from college coaches.Prior to June 15, Addi suffered an ankle injury that limited her during her Level 9 season in 2022. Then she sustained a vestibular concussion and experienced severe complications, which kept her out of the gym for six months. As a result, she only competed in one Level 10 meet before her recruiting period began on June 15, 2023. Despite not having a lengthy résumé of accolades and experience, Addi still attracted interest from several Division I schools—not only because they saw her potential, but because they recognized her determination as she worked to come back from the concussion. In December 2023, about a year after the concussion, Addi committed to a Division I school on a scholarship. However, that scholarship was later pulled due to a shoulder injury. She joins us to talk about that experience — the highs and lows — and what ultimately led her to Texas Woman's University.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Claudia, Siona, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Lauren D, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B,, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D, Caroline M & Greg T!

That summer, she visited Iowa State, Arizona State and NC State, ultimately committing to Arizona State.About two months later, Fisher switched her commitment to Iowa State, where she signed in November 2024. A few months ago, she was released from her national letter of intent with Iowa State and signed with North Carolina — which had actually been her top choice from the beginning.Fisher's recruiting story is unique in that she changed her mind a few times, but ultimately ended up where she felt she was meant to be. We're back with another Recruit Reflection, and we're especially excited about this one because it's the first time we're featuring someone who went through the recruiting process but ultimately decided to step away from gymnastics to focus on academics. This week, we're joined by Leah Fontaine, a member of the Class of 2025 from Capital Gymnastics. Fontaine was a Level 10 gymnast for six years and spent time on the elite track during her younger years. She had dreamed of competing in college gymnastics for as long as she could remember and took six official visits when the recruiting period began. However, around that time, she began dealing with an ankle injury and faced the challenge of recovering while maintaining the interest of college coaches. After much reflection, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the sport to focus on her future. Georgetown University was one of the schools Fontaine had been interested in, although it doesn't have a gymnastics program. She was only able to consider it seriously after stepping away from gymnastics. Since leaving club gymnastics, she has embraced new opportunities — including starting a nonprofit organization and participating in high school gymnastics during her senior year. Now preparing to start her college journey at Georgetown this fall, Fontaine joins us to reflect on her unique recruiting experience and what lies ahead.Thank you to our monthly Patreon supporters: Lee B, Cookiemaster, Christa, Happy Girl, Erica S, Semflam, Amy C, Maria L, Becca S, Cathleen R, Faith, Kerry M, M, Derek H, Martin, Sharon B, Randee B, MSU, Kimberly G, Robert H, Lela M, Mara L, Jenna A, Alex M, Mama T, Kelsey, Lidia, Maria P, Alicia O, Cristina K, Bethany J, Diane J, Kentiemac, Marni S, Betny T, Emily C, Cathy D, Lisa T, Libby C, Thiago, Taryn M, Dana B, Jamie S, Chuck C, Je_GL, Kaitlin, Susan P, Katertot, Mallory D, LFC_Hokie, Ella, Debbie, Megan F, Kay, Diane J, Julie B,, Austin K, Jane, Sarah, Amy, Stephen S, Johanna T, Alison S, Kristina T, Abigail W, Becky, Ola S, Jennifer K, Kate M, Naomi S, Claudia, Siona, Erin L, Sarah A, Kennedy B, Thomas B, Lauren D, Kihika N, Beth C, Amy, Renee PM, Ryan V, Brandon H, Tyler, Hayley B, Ben S, Kate & Landon, Danielle, ALittleUnderRotated, Dana C, Amy C, Grace, Pat G , Lexi G, Laura N, Kathy, Katie A, Ruby B, Katie E, Róisín, Becca, Megan J, Emily D, Britton, Ry Shep, Reyna G, Catherine, William A, MB, MJ L, Jackson G, Brittany A, Stella, Ulo F, Noah C, Melissa H, Alexis, William M, Trish, Susie, Leslie G, Catherine B, Karlin, Laura L, Katy S, J'nia G, Kathy M, Kathy S, Okcaro, Caroline P, JD B, Cookiecutter, Ailish D, Wil D & BCAll Things Scoreboard Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/all-things-scoreboard-introducing-ncaa-gymnastics-new/id1508390381?i=1000685173734

We recommend watching the video version of this episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Create the Tour YOU Want in Morocco"When you're the type of traveller, particularly to Morocco, who would like to get past the overwhelm and uncertainties of crafting your own trip around the country and take a guided tour instead, it's easy to then get bombarded by the various discount trips, package deals without a lot of detail, rushed itineraries and tightly controlled schedules. There are better ways to see Morocco, in a safe, comfortable, relaxed and personalized way, without the crowds, or waiting around for all 47 passengers to board the bus. Destination Morocco specializes in private and small group tours. We love being able to dart past the big groups waiting in line at the group entrance and instead head straight inside. We always partner with small, family-run riads, the type that only have an 8 or 12-person capacity, and only default to a hotel when that's the sole option (a rare occasion). We get you that table at a hidden gem restaurant, the one that only locals know about. Because it's your own local guide who's taking you there. Explore the medina at your own pace, add a museum to a rainy afternoon, or make that extra stop at the argan oil cooperative or an unexpected winery along the way.Destination Morocco has a new promotions magazine coming out soon, with many beautiful images, background info on Morocco's diverse cities, options for immersive cultural experiences and sample itineraries. Today I'm talking about mistakes people make when planning Hawaii Vacations. And why you should think twice before doing this all online. Through my years of experience, I've learned that travelers naturally come from distinct travel types. Here's how I carefully tune into their preferences to create memorable, personalized vacations rather than standard one-click Hawaii vacations.  Cookie-Cutter Hawaii Vacation Packages on Sites like Expedia all Look the SAME! Cookie-Cutter Hawaii Vacation Packages There are a lot of cookie-cutter Hawaii bundles online. Does this sound familiar? You want to come to Hawaii. The internet is a direct link to booking platforms such as Expedia and Travelocity, with Costco being another major player. Bingo. You're on the way to Hawaii....WHOOOT! - so convenient, right? You place your items into the shopping cart by clicking through the website. Within 10 minutes, you can have your booking confirmed. You believe that your choice is perfect. And maybe it is. But what ifit isn't? But how will you know? Let's dive in. You found me, so I trust you have good research skill sets. Your effort to locate me proves you've searched thoroughly.  If your Hawaii vacation doesn't meet your exact needs it becomes your only opportunity to experience it. The majority of visitors here are either starting their journey or experiencing their first trip. After mastering the process of traveling to Hawaii you can manage the trip by yourself. I strongly recommend that you proceed with this approach. Knowing this destination turns repeat visits into an enjoyable experience. If you can afford it. Because obviously, budget is a concern.  Big Online Travel Site Hawaii Vacation Packages Today I want to discuss some of these travel package types. These airline big-box travel sites present attractive vacation packages. These travel sites attract customers by setting appealing prices. And inconvenient flight times. And getting you to the wrong airport. Countless times people have reached out to me because they planned trips from Oahu to the Big Island. Travelers made the mistake of believing the Big Island was Oahu. Things like this. Rookie mistakes. The travelers ended up much farther from the beach than they believed they were. The hotel details provided were not as precise as they believed. The outcome failed to deliver everything they expected.  Woman Making Mistake Booking the Wrong Airport! Pro tip- Hold Up - Don't book your airfare first! A common way people choose Hawaii Vacation Packages is by spotting a great airfare deal. They purchase their air tickets without knowing that finding their preferred lodging will be very difficult. And how expensive it is. Travelers find themselves paying substantially more than they initially anticipated. So don't do that. Hacker Tip: This travel advice originates from my previous recommendations. Always evaluate your entire travel plan before finalizing your airfare booking. Huh? No all Inclusive's? Customization of your vacation experience is something I'm emphasizing directly to you because it truly holds significant importance. Over the years, I've come to realize that while a one-size-fits-all solution works well for some travelers, it simply doesn't resonate with everyone. That's why I focus on tailoring each trip to the individual. At the same time, our website offers 'all-inclusive' Hawaii vacation packages—mainly because many people specifically request them. However, even those packages can be customized to better fit your personal travel style and needs I typically manage to persuade people away from them because they don't really fit their needs. We do not offer all-inclusive hotels and resorts in Hawaii, they just don't exist. Hawaii's not an all-inclusive type of place. It's an à la carte type of place. Listen to my podcast from three or four weeks ago where I compare all-inclusive Hawaii vacations to traditional à la carte Hawaii vaca...

Using insurance for physical therapy might feel like a smart move until you see the price you're paying in time, money, and results.   When Dr. Andrew Fix sat in on a client's post-op appointment, he didn't expect the orthopedic surgeon to describe their own physical therapy department as “a factory.” But that offhand comment revealed something bigger: a system that's become overloaded, rushed, and driven by insurance reimbursement instead of patient outcomes. So why are so many people still choosing in-network care? And what are they actually getting for their money?   In this episode, Dr. Fix breaks down how insurance is shaping the way physical therapy is delivered and how those choices affect real people. He explains why high-volume clinics are the norm, how reimbursement cuts are pushing providers to see more patients in less time, and why many people end up with surprise bills despite thinking their care is “covered.”   This is a conversation about time, trust, and the true cost of healthcare. If you've ever felt confused by your insurance or unsure whether cash-pay care is worth it, this episode gives you a clearer way to think about your options.   Quotes “The clinic is so crowded with clients and the schedule of the therapist is so full with people every day that the clients don't get a very personalized and individualized experience.” (03:48 | Dr. Andrew Fix)  “The orthopedic office has their own physical therapy department, but the physicians, because they don't like the quality of the experience that clients are receiving downstairs... they're choosing to refer their clients elsewhere, where it takes money out of their practice's pocket.” (04:46 | Dr. Andrew Fix)  “Every year, we as consumers, you as consumers, pay more for health insurance... but then, every year, it seems like your insurance is covering less and less and less.” (06:19 | Dr. Andrew Fix) “I can absolutely promise you that it is not necessarily cheaper to go to an in-network place versus an out-of-network or cash pay style office.” (10:01 | Dr. Andrew Fix)  “We get to spend so much more time with the client that we can oftentimes achieve the same or typically a better outcome in a fewer number of sessions... you get back that one finite resource that none of us have enough of, and that's time.” (14:04 | Dr. Andrew Fix)    Links SideKick Tool: https://bit.ly/4a6CqJS   Movemate:

Thanks to Alyx for this week's suggestion, the cookie cutter shark! Further reading: If You Give a Shark a Cookie The business end of the cookie cutter shark: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to learn about a little shark suggested by Alyx, but first let's learn about something else that might be related to the shark. In the 1970s, the U.S. Navy started having trouble with the navigation of their submarines. The Ohio-class submarine had what was called a sonar dome that was filled with oil, and the oil helped transmit sound. But repeatedly the subs would lose navigation abilities, and investigations turned up strange chunks removed from the electric cables, the oil lines, the sound probes, and the sonar dome itself—anywhere made of rubber that was soft enough for what looked like a hole saw to damage. The Navy thought they were dealing with a state-of-the-art weapon. The United States and the former Soviet Union were bitter enemies, so the Navy thought the USSR had invented a technologically sophisticated underwater stealth drone of some kind that could damage the subs and leave no trace—nothing but circular chunks removed from the sonar dome and its components. Thirty submarines were damaged before the Navy figured out the cause. It wasn't a super-secret weapon at all. It was just a little fish called the cookie-cutter shark. The cookie cutter shark doesn't look very scary. It only grows 22 inches long at most, or 56 cm, and is brown in color. It has lots of very sharp evenly spaced teeth on its lower jaw, but compared to a great white shark, it's nothing to worry about. But somehow it was able to disable 30 of the world's most advanced submarines at the time. That's because of how the cookie cutter shark eats, which is also how it gets its name. It picks a target fish or some other animal, such as a whale or a seal, or possibly the sonar dome of an Ohio-class submarine, and sneaks up to it. It's just a little fish and its coloration helps it blend in with its surroundings, so most animals barely notice it. It has lips that act like a suction cup, so quick as a wink it sticks itself to the animal, bites down, and spins around. In moments it's cut a circular chunk out of the animal's side like a horrible cookie, which it swallows, and by the time the animal even realizes it's hurt, the cookie cutter shark is long gone. The shark used to be called the cigar shark because of its shape. It wasn't until 1971 that experts realized how the cookie cutter shark eats. Until then the circular wounds on fish and whales and other animals were thought to be from lamprey bites or from some kind of parasite. The cookie cutter shark does have teeth in its upper jaw but they're much smaller than the lower teeth. When it sheds its lower teeth to replace them, instead of shedding just one tooth, it sheds them all at once. Like most sharks, it swallows its old teeth so it can reuse the calcium to grow new teeth. The shark also has photophores on the underside of its body that glow greenish, which is a common way that some fish escape predators from below. A big fish looking up toward the surface of the water high above it sees a lot of light shining down from the sun, so a fish with a glowing underside just blends in. But in the case of the cookie cutter shark, it has a strip of skin on its underside without photophores, and from below that strip shows up. It's a sort of collar that's actually darker brown than the rest of the fish. It looks, in fact, like a tiny fish silhouetted against the surface. The would-be predator fish approaches, expecting an easy meal. Instead, the cookie cutter shark darts around and takes a big bite out of the fish, then takes off. It's a remarkably fast swimmer, but most of the time it hangs almost motionless in the water waiting for another animal to approach.
