Show Notes: Sri Kaza is a former McKinsey partner and the author of Unconvention, A Small Business Strategy Guide. Sri explains why he left McKinsey after nearly a decade of working with large corporations, to start working with small businesses. Around 12 years ago he decided to pursue entrepreneurship and independence. He worked for Tor Hagen at Viking Cruises, who was a former McKinsey partner, and Sri was impressed by Tor's ability to allow his vision to take risks and drive decision-making. This inspired Sri to look more broadly at entrepreneurship. The Tax Credit Company After working with Hagen, Sri joined a new entrepreneurial venture, the Tax Credit Co., which focused on small businesses with less than 100 or 500 employees. His focus was operationalizing their work opportunity tax credit business, helping them access the government credits they simply were not aware of. Sri's company spent a significant amount of time and money acquiring customers, focusing on providing value and helping them navigate the complex world of tax credits. Explaining The Work Opportunity Tax Credit Sri explains how The Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows small businesses to claim tax credits up to 2000 dollars for hiring individuals on government assistance or from unique districts with socio-economic issues. Sri talks about the scale of tax credit opportunities available as well as the potential for fraud and exploitation. To build a scalable back end, Sri drew from his McKinsey experience and suggests thinking about the business from the perspective of the small business owner and providing guidance on where the big problems are. Small Business Lending Sri shared examples from his most recent role as CEO of ForwardLine Financial, a small business lender about being informative and helping businesses research their problems. This approach helped both the small business clients and Sri's company scale up well; but many of their clients' business faced challenges during the COVID pandemic and a third of their customers did not survive the pandemic. Sri then developed a framework for building business cases and understanding the strategies of small firms, helping them apply funds and succeed. It was this experience that inspired the concept of his book. Agility and Speed of Decision-Making Incorporating agility and speed of decision making into a small business framework is crucial for success. Small business owners have the advantage of knowing their customers day-to-day and making decisions quickly. This is different from CEOs of big companies, who have to make decisions based on government restrictions. Sri explains that, during the post-COVID period, many businesses didn't wait to set up their standards for their in-store experience. They adjusted their offerings based on customer preferences, even in states with more freedom. For example, in Florida and Texas, businesses with a large number of operations struggled and saw higher revenue declines on average than some California cities. Business owners in these states didn't wait for the government to dictate their practices, but instead understood their customers' concerns and did their own research. This allowed them to make decisions quickly and reflect their customers' preferences, which helped them stay in better shape than chains that were waiting for national rules. The Importance of Purpose and Pride for Small Businesses Sri discusses the concept of purpose in small businesses, comparing it to the concept of Shokunin, or craftsmanship. Sri talks about his time in Japan and what he learned from small businesses there. He found that these businesses focused on their craft rather than profit or growth. He later realized that purpose allows individuals to choose their return on investment and pursue their passions. Individuals often leave consulting to pursue independence, not to make more money. They value the freedoms they gain from doing so. When making decisions, it's crucial not to compromise on their purpose, as it's powerful and doesn't have to follow the path of larger corporations. Pricing for Small Businesses Sri discusses the concept of raising prices for small businesses, which can be a challenge. He explains that there is more to understanding customer value than just price, and that small businesses should be conscious of the benefits they are sharing. He suggests that small businesses should not solely focus on profit but also on what they are trying to accomplish. He lays out pricing principles in his book to help small businesses understand how to calculate pricing and be conscious of the driving factors behind it that may not simply be profit. Plans for the Future Sri's personal plans for his book include becoming a coach or consultant to small businesses, launching a nonprofit foundation, and having an impact on 30 million entrepreneurs in the country. He believes that these entrepreneurs are challenged and need advice from people who have practical experience. He plans to create a nonprofit foundation and help build tools and reach a wider distribution. They talk about: How faith and political ideology collide and sometimes collapse The moment Tim stopped playing the political game Why voluntarism and Christianity go hand in hand What inspired his latest album The State's Just a Mafia Using music as a tool for truth, protest, and worship The role of small churches, AI, and hopeful universalism in shaping his worldview This conversation moves from heavy to hopeful, with honest reflections on war, government, discipleship, and how modern politics often feels more like pro wrestling than public service. Whether you're deep into Christian anarchism or just starting to question what you've always believed, this episode offers a refreshing mix of conviction, creativity, and clarity.

Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader My guest: Sam Lessin is a Partner at Slow Ventures, with prior experience as Vice President of Product Management at Facebook and CEO of Drop.io. His career highlights include serving as a key executive at Facebook, leading product management efforts, and successfully co-founding Fin. His current role at Slow Ventures involves investing in innovative startups across various sectors, showcasing his expertise in entrepreneurship and venture capital. Notes: Key Learnings The 4:30 AM Advantage – Sam's father would be at his desk by 4:30 AM every day, saying, "It's easy to look smart if you have a several-hour head start on everyone else." Early work creates compounding advantages over time. Either Be Early or Be Late, Don't Be On Time – Father's wisdom about timing and seasons. Start your career super early to get ahead, or strategically wait and come in later. Timing matters more than perfect preparation. Joy as the Ultimate Competitive Advantage – "I just don't think that in the long run, angry people win." Look for joyful people in hiring and partnerships because joy is sustainable while anger burns out. Type Two Fun Builds Resilience – Type 1 fun is enjoyable while doing it (rollercoaster). Type 2 fun "completely sucks while you're doing it, but there's joy on the other side" (climbing mountains, marathons). Entrepreneurs need Type 2 fun experiences. Practice Voluntary Hardship – Sam ran a sub-3-hour marathon and got a pilot's license not for love of activities, but for "practice moments" of perseverance. Creates evidence that you can handle business adversity. Right Person, Right Opportunity, Right Time – Don't ask "is this a great person?" Ask, "Is it the right person at the right moment?" Success requires all three elements to align, not just talent. Write Publicly for Intellectual Receipts – "If you can't write the check, write me the thesis and timestamp it." Writing creates accountability, proves thinking ability, and builds reputation over time. Nobody Knows What They're Doing – Working at Bain taught Sam that even prestigious companies "have no idea what you're doing." This is liberating—you can figure it out too. Big Things Take Time (Slow Ventures Philosophy) – Most success isn't quick wins. Venmo took "so many turns of the crank." Be patient finding the right wind, then sail fast when you catch it. Embrace Being Wrong Most of the Time – Seed investing means "you're mostly wrong, you mostly lose money." Success comes from being very right occasionally, not being right consistently. The Solana 2000x Return Story – Put in $400K, returned 2000x to LPs. Success came from the intersection of thesis (looking for "Ethereum killer") and relationships (following Raj Gokal through multiple startups). Use Humor and Authenticity as Filters – Slow Ventures website looks like a law firm in tuxedos "on purpose." If you don't think it's funny, "you're not who we want to invest in." Writing Pushes Away Wrong People – "I really like to be not liked by the people I don't want to work with." Authentic writing attracts the right people and repels the wrong ones. Manufacturing Hardship for Privileged Kids – "Tiger Dad" sports culture might be a misguided attempt to create necessary adversity for wealthy children who lack natural hardships. I loved the throughline of this whole conversation being about his dad, working exceptionally hard, and having joy and excitement for the journey. Maybe it was the near-death experiences that his dad had that led to that mindset. Regardless, it's something we can all learn from. We want to be around optimistic people who have joy and love for what they're doing… Nobody knows what they're doing. We're all figuring it out as we go. You'll never learn unless you go out and do the thing. Figure it out as you go. Just get started. And iterate. Learn. Try again. And keep going. Advice from Sam – Write publicly. You don't know what you think until you get your thoughts out of your head onto the page. And if you publish them, you have a record of the journey. Also, you might attract someone to work with. That is how Jack Raines (guest on episode #539) caught Sam's attention, and now they work together. Useful Quotes: "It's easy to look smart if you have a several-hour head start on everyone else." "I just don't think that in the long run, angry people win." "Either be early or be late, don't be on time." "The right question is, is it the right person at the right moment?" "Writing is thinking. If you can't write, you can't think." "I feel like a tenured professor of capitalism—responsible to make a lot of money over the long term by being very right every once in a while with permission to be wrong all the time." "One of the most insulting things you can call someone is a market participant." "The beauty of the internet is so big. The right people find you." "Big things take time." "Life's short. Is this really what you're spending your time on?" Apply to be part of my next Learning Leader Circle.
