In this episode, Bruce Mayhew, corporate trainer, keynote speaker, executive coach, and author, shares insights on manufacturing leadership, communication skills, and trust building for Operations Managers, Production Managers, Manufacturing Managers, and Shift Supervisors. You'll learn why traditional command-and-control leadership no longer works in today's plants — and how curiosity-driven leadership, authentic communication, and continuous improvement help manufacturing leaders close the skills gap, strengthen employee engagement, and drive real team performance. Bruce breaks down how everyday leadership behaviors directly impact culture, safety, accountability, and results — especially as manufacturing organizations face labor shortages, workforce challenges, and generational shifts on the shop floor. This conversation connects soft skills with operational excellence, showing leaders how to move from reaction to intention, from blame to curiosity, and from siloed management to connected leadership. 01:30 – As generational shifts place millennials in leadership roles, it can create tension between siloed leadership and collaborative, flatter manufacturing cultures. 03:49–Purpose and meaning drive effective leadership, stronger relationships, and healthier workplace culture. 06:12–Disconnects between executives and the shop floor weaken teamwork and long-term manufacturing performance. 07:19–Self-awareness and emotional intelligence enable leaders to adapt communication styles across manufacturing teams. 08:58–Respect on the shop floor comes from meeting people where they are, not talking down to them. 09:44–High performance in manufacturing is unlocked through meaningful conversations rather than top-down directives. 16:27–Transparency grows when leaders listen first and elevate frontline voices. 18:33- Shared pride in quality and reputation strengthens team identity and manufacturing excellence. 20:15–Curiosity-driven leadership replaces blame-focused problem solving with appreciative inquiry. 23:31–Positive exploration increases engagement by empowering teams instead of punishing them. 25:09 - Accountability works best when leaders replace interrogation with curiosity-based performance conversations. Lawrence returns for a wide-ranging conversation that blends chemistry, physics, and biology with a few surprises along the way. Beyond being a world-class chemist and humate specialist, he shares stories from his past as a motorcycle racer and glass artist, proving great science often comes from creative minds. This episode takes a deep dive into amino acids: how they are produced, how they function within the plant, and why so much of the industry conversation is driven by hype rather than complete science. Lawrence explains how properly formulated amino acids can help reduce nitrogen inputs, improve efficiency, and support plants under stress. We also explore the real role of carbon in fertility programs. Too many products remain plant-focused instead of feeding the soil microbes that drive nutrient availability. By mimicking natural photosynthetic exudates, EarthWorks liquid technologies help create bioavailability in the root zone, even in the challenging environments of golf courses and sports fields. As always, Lawrence delivers a thoughtful and engaging look at how plants truly function and what it takes to build healthier, more resilient turf.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

It's been more than half a century since the publication of Silent Spring by the scientist and creative writer Rachel Carson. The seminal volume caught the attention of U.S. presidents, artists and musicians, spurring the environmental movement and leading to the eventual ban of the toxic pesticide DDT. Joining the Mongabay Newscast is environmental writer and director of the creative writing program at Middlebury College, Megan Mayhew Bergman. She unpacks the impact of Carson's work, which came under public attack from chemical companies seeking to discredit her, and how, eventually, the truth broke through. "We don't change our minds usually based on data. We change our minds based on emotion, but historically, it's been pretty taboo for scientists to include emotion in the way that they write. And I feel like Carson risked that here in a way that was really powerful." Please take a minute to let us know what you think of our podcast, here. Image: Megan Mayhew Bergman. 1-15-2026: Wake Up Missouri with Randy Tobler, Stephanie Bell, John Marsh, and Producer Drake
One of the Missouri House's senior members has filed a bill that establishes provisions relating to autonomous vehicles. State Rep. Don Mayhew (R-Crocker) has filed House Bill 2208. Under his bill, you would be able to operate a fully autonomous vehicle on public roads if conditions are met involving the vehicle's certification and safety capabilities described in the bill. Before doing so, you would have to submit a law enforcement plan to the state Department of Public Safety (DPS), also described in the bill. Mayhew's bill states that the automated driving system of a vehicle is considered the driver of that vehicle for the purpose of complying with traffic laws. Mayhew joined Randy Tobler and Stephanie Bell live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri," telling listeners that he believes the bill will get to the Missouri House floor and he's hopeful of passage. He also says he's ridden in one of these autonomous vehicles in Phoenix and that he felt safe:
In this episode, Smith and Mayhew explore one of the biggest hidden causes of stress, frustration and burnout in modern men: living out of alignment. When your actions, choices and habits don't match the man you want to become, life starts to feel heavy, noisy and exhausting. This episode marks a new chapter for the podcast, with a more honest, unfiltered approach to what it really takes to become a better man. We explore the idea that progress doesn't always come from doing more, but from letting go of outdated identities, unhelpful routines, people-pleasing, and the constant chase for “what's next”. It's a conversation about slowing down, raising standards, and building a life that actually fits who you are now. Jaimes Mayhew doesn't make “maps.” They make portals. In this short interview from IMMORTAL, Mayhew talks about queer and trans mapping as something way more alive than coordinates and gridlines: a practice built from trust, workshops, inside jokes, conflict, tenderness, and the radical act of imagining together. Their maps don't say “you are here.” They say: we could be elsewhere—if we build it.Mayhew's whole method is collective: start with a room full of people asking deceptively simple questions—What do we need? What do we desire? Who belongs?—then distill those answers into landscapes that refuse perfection. Because perfection is usually just the old world wearing a new wig.The big idea: utopia isn't a destination. It's a rehearsal. A group practice. A messy draft you revise with others. Over and over.Want the full deep-dive? By the end of his life, Billy Mayhew might well have wished he'd never written that damned song.Oh, it was a hit, all right — the only one the old Baltimore vaudeville piano man ever wrote — introduced to the world by 1930s radio superstar Kate Smith and later jazzed up by the great Fats Waller who got everyone humming the thing.Still, within months of the publication of “It's a Sin to Tell a Lie,” Billy and his wife and co-author Margaret Konig Mayhew were dragged into court with a demand that they share the song's mounting royalties. How the Song Came to BeBilly wrote “It's a Sin to Tell a Lie” in the early 1930s, but after five years of hoofing it around to pitch it in New York's Tin Pan Alley, he could find no one who wanted to publish it. According to later court documents, Mayhew was about to give up when in June 1935 he met Helen Meehan in the music department of the S.S. Kresge Company store in Baltimore. For nearly two decades by then, Meehan had been employed as a sheet music buyer, meaning she had contacts in the publishing world. Right away, Helen went to bat for Billy, reaching out to representatives of music houses. In early 1936 she landed the song with Broadway publisher Donaldson, Douglas and Gumble, Inc. (If that name rings a bell, it might be because we met the firm's founder Walter Donaldson back when we talked about his “My Blue Heaven” and again in the back story of his “Makin' Whoopee.”)When Donaldson published it, “It's a Sin to Tell a Lie” hit the big time. It was first recorded and released by Freddy Ellis and his orchestra, followed by Kate Smith and then Fats Waller. Dream come true. But before the year was out, Billy's dream took a nasty turn. The Court CaseIn the Circuit Court of Baltimore City in late July 1936, Helen Meehan sued him, claiming Billy Mayhew himself had done a bit of lying when he promised to give her 50 percent of the royalties if she got the song published. After a two-year court fight, a decree was issued in Meehan's favor, establishing her as a creditor for $7,163.10 (about $170,000 in today's dollars). This decision was affirmed on appeal the following spring. However, it appears only the lawyers profited from the case. While Helen Meehan successfully established her claim, she found it hard to collect. Her main obstacle was a representative of the song's publisher, which placed an attachment on Mayhew's royalties in New York as early as February 1937.In a desperate attempt to stop that payment, Meehan filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against the Mayhews, arguing that Billy and Margaret's failure was a “preferential transfer.” But the U.S. District Court didn't buy it, dismissing her petition and ruling that the publisher's claim was based on a lien established years earlier and therefore was not a fresh act of bankruptcy. The Last DecadeAfter that, we lose track of Helen, but Billy and Margaret Mayhew ended their days living and working at a brother-in-law's boarding house and “truck farm.” Today, incidentally, the farm — located on Bar Neck Road in Cornersville, in Maryland's Dorchester County — is listed on the state's Inventory of Historic Properties, all because of its association with the song.No more hit songs came from the couple, though they seem to have kept trying. For instance, the day after Christmas in 1940, Billy and Margaret filed copyright papers for a composition with an intriguing title: “Can't Do a Thing with My Heart.” Alas, we find no indication that it was ever published or recorded.Billy died Nov. 17, 1951, and Margaret died a month later. Both are buried in Baltimore's Oak Lawn Cemetery. The Song Lives OnThe Mayhews wrote the song as a waltz, and that's how Freddy Ellis's orchestra performed it in its first recording. The early performances — by Kate Smith, Ruth Etting, Vera Lynn, et al — played it straight (very straight). But then also came Flood hero Fats Waller, who never played anything straight. Fats kicked the tune into 4/4 and gave it his signature blend of stride piano and irreverent, satirical humor. For instance, while the ladies Kate, Ruth and Vera all loyally sang the Mayhews' original lyric “If you break my heart I'll die,” Fats ad libbed, “If you break my heart, I'll break your jaw!”From Fats forward, the song that originated as a sappy Tin Pan Alley ballad got its groove on, transforming into a high-energy (often comedic) jazz performance for everyone for the Ink Spots (1942) and Billie Holiday (1949) to Jimmy Rushing (1955) and Tony Bennett (1964) to Steve Goodman (1975) and John Denver (1998).Floodifying ItThis song has rattled around in the Floodisphere for decades but only recently did we decide to give it a spin. According to Lawrence Mayhew, the EarthWorks chemist, calcium is the most important nutrient in plant production. While that may be debated, Lawrence makes a strong case for why calcium deserves top billing in any fertility program. This episode begins with a discussion about ammonium sulfate and how it can release calcium from the soil colloid, making it more available to plants. Lawrence also explains how the presence of calcium in the soil triggers the release of root exudates, helping the element move into the plant. The conversation explores different calcium sources, such as various forms of limestone and gypsum, and how they behave differently in the soil. Lawrence dives into the redox chemistry of calcium, explaining its true function in the soil and why it does not directly affect pH the way many assume. The discussion wraps up with a look at how calcium operates within the plant and practical ways to improve calcium bioavailability. If you are a fan of soil chemistry and Biological Soil Management, this is a must-listen. Whether you are already a believer in the power of calcium or still skeptical, you will find this episode both informative and memorable.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

It has often been said that interior design would be a great job if it wasn't for the clients. They can be unappreciative, indecisive, and unreasonable even when their project is on track and bellicose, belligerent, and litigious when things go wrong. In fact, the designer-client relationship which often begins as a love affair can sometimes end tragically in the bitterest of divorces. But is there really such a thing an awkward client, or are any problems just down to poor communications? What can make a good client turn bad? And how can designers effectively manage this most important and sensitive of relationships? Jeff and Susie are joined by Simon Mayhew from Txtured and James Roberts from James Roberts Interiors to answer these and other questions in front of a live audience of designers at the Design Central North West event at Capesthorne Hall in Cheshire. In this episode, Mayhew explores one of Marcus Aurelius' most powerful Stoic teachings: “You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you think, say, and do.” Far from being morbid, this reminder is about perspective, presence, and taking ownership of the time you have. It's a call to stop wasting energy on stress, overthinking, and procrastination, and instead focus on the things you can control - the things that actually matter. When your values, actions, and goals don't match, the result is second-guessing, guilt, and a constant feeling of not being good enough. The good news? With clarity, courage, and a willingness to put in boundaries, you can start living congruently and stop letting fear or people-pleasing run the show. Back by popular demand, we welcome Mr. Lawrence Mayhew—chemist and humic substance specialist—to talk about the biology of thatch. Thatch is the result of an imbalance in the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio within the soil profile, often caused by the overuse of synthetic nitrogen. It can restrict air and water movement through the turf, fails to provide a usable carbon food source for microbes, and does not support a strong playing surface.Lawrence begins our conversation with a review of what constitutes a good humic acid and why these substances are so important. However, the core focus of this podcast is the biology of thatch in turf systems and how we can biologically digest long-chained, ligneous carbon material into a usable carbon form known as humus. He breaks down the three stages of thatch—the green, brown, and dark carbon layers commonly found in turf systems. The dark carbon layer is the most beneficial and can only be achieved through microbial digestion and the production of specific enzymes critical to this process. As always, it's a fascinating discussion packed with valuable information for anyone growing grass or cultivating any horticultural product. The chemistry, physics, and biology behind thatch digestion are complex, but with the right biological system in place, the turf industry is witnessing a shift away from mechanical aerification toward a natural process. The result: a healthier environment and a significantly easier life for turf managers.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with co-editors and poets, Connor Lafortune and Lindsay Mayhew about their anthology, A Thousand Tiny Awakenings. A Thousand Tiny Awakenings (Latitude 46, 2025) is a collection of poems and creative non-fiction that explores the creative voice of those eighteen to thirty years of age. A new generation with a desire to dismantle the restrictive systems that define the past, but not their future. A Thousand Tiny Awakenings offers a glimpse into how a new generation perceives the world and how they use their own power to shape the future. Connor Lafortune is from Dokis First Nation on Robinson Huron Treaty territory of 1850 in Northeastern Ontario. He works primarily in Life Promotion, harm-reduction, mental health, and Indigenous education. He completed his Bachelor's Degree at Nipissing University with a Double Honors Major in Indigenous Studies and Gender Equality and Social Justice. He is currently in the Masters in Indigenous Relations at Laurentian University. Connor is Anishinaabek, Queer, and Francophone; he uses his understanding of the world to shape his creations as a writer, spoken word poet, and musician. Connor often combines the written word with traditional Indigenous beadwork and sewing to recreate the stories of colonization, showcase resilience, and imagine a new future. He recently released a single in collaboration with Juno Award winner G.R. Gritt titled “Qui crie au loup? ft. Connor Lafortune.” Above all else, Connor is an activist, a shkaabewis (helper), and a compassionate human being. Lindsay Mayhew (she/her) is a spoken word poet and author from Sudbury, Ontario. She is a recent English Literature Master's graduate from the University of Guelph. Lindsay is the multi-year champion of Wordstock Sudbury's poetry slam, a runner up in the 2024 Womxn of the World poetry slam, and she has featured in events across Ontario, including the YWCA, JAYU Canada, Nuit Blanche, and Wordstock Literary Festival. Lindsay's written work can be found in the Literary Review of Canada, Moria, and multiple editions of Sulphur. Her work combines art and theory to voice feminist futures and human rights advocacy.
