This show originally aired 15 months ago, before the death of civil rights rights movement leader representative John Lewis on July 17, 2020. Laura caught up with Nate recently to ask him about his understanding of the legacy of Lewis with whom he worked on the award winning graphic novel the March trilogy. Watch this web exclusive at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow This week's episode:Far more than an escape, comics can pack a political punch, as does the work of this week's guests. First up, Mohammad Sabaaneh describes how he transposes his lived experience to the page, exposing the cruelties of Israeli occupation and celebrating popular resistance as the path forward. Then, Nate Powell uses his craft to break down a specifically American phenomenon – the creep of fascist aesthetics into our police and consumer choices. www.frontlinedefenders.org Season 2, Episode 1 FLD Intro: 00:00 - 02:51 Interview with Yara Hawari, Palestine: 02:51 - 12:48 Interview with William Amanzuru, Uganda: 12:48 - 26:36 Interview with Sara García Gross, El Salvador: 26:36 - 33:03 As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the globe, and communities seek to protect themselves however they can, governments are being challenged to respond. While the vast majority of governments have not done well in initial responses, some have been transparent, direct and engaged with their citizens – and the global community. Others, particularly those with authoritarian features or tendencies, are engaged in responding to the crisis that puts political and economic interests out front, crafting policy and decree accordingly. The declaration of emergency rule in too many countries only solidifies what was already there in practice, and leaves many people scared not only of the virus itself, but what may come next when life returns to what we now call normal. Human rights defenders are responding to these challenges, as they always do – by working hard, reaching out to their communities, identifying those who are struggling or are in need or who have been left out, and trying to help. They are calling out government abuse and excess and finding new ways to communicate with each other and the outside world to challenge power. Today, Front Line Defenders relaunches its ‘Rights on the Line’ podcast, to offer another platform for the voices, perspectives and experiences of human rights defenders at risk and leading struggles for the health, wellbeing and rights of their communities. In this episode, Front Line Defenders speaks to feminist activist Yara Hawari from Palestine about the consequences of the pandemic for a population under military occupation. Then we discuss government response in the context of the environment in Uganda with the founder of Friends of Zoka, William Amenzuru. Finally, we hear from Sara Garcia Gross from El Salvador, a leading women’s rights defender about the government’s response in the context of its dark past, the rampant violence against women in the country and the current dispute between the President and the opposition. What does an independent artist need to know to find success in the world of sync licensing? Michael Donaldson of 8DSync and 8sided.blog shares his experiences as an artist with sync placements spanning the past couple of decades.Michael Donaldson is best known in the music industry as Astralwerks/Virgin Records recording artist Q-Burns Abstract Message. Under this name, Michael wrote and produced four acclaimed albums and performed around the world. With Q-BAM songs licensed to the likes of Sex and the City, BMW, Spike Lee’s The 25th Hour, and the video game Test Drive 6, Michael fortuitously learned the ins-and-outs of music licensing. He used this knowledge to raise the licensing profile of Eighth Dimension Records, an influential label on the US electronic music scene that Michael co-founded in 1994. In 2011, Eighth Dimension transformed into 8DSync, allowing Michael to capitalize on his taste-making prowess, licensing expertise, and access to a distinctive and inspiring music catalog. He continues to expand his roles in music publishing, content licensing, and industry consultancy. Michael also writes about music’s place in the 21st century on his thought-provoking blog: www.8sided.blog For questions or information about Michael’s workshops, contact Michael at www.8sided.blog/about Michael Donaldson on LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/mdonaldson8dOther Linkswww.sync-club.comWarner Music Group Signs an Algorithm to a Record Deal https://tinyurl.com/y27e25jx

That was then… The benefits of doing the podcast are many but getting to meet so many cool people is the tops. Michael Donaldson is no exception. Whether learning about the current music scene or trading war stories from back in my days in the biz I could have gone on for hours. We tried to narrow it down to an hour but that was still not enough. It looks like Michael has a lot more is store for us so watch for follow up episodes as we work towards helping to expose more of what seems to be a much more vibrant music scene than I was to believe. Michael is not only an acclaimed artist, Q-Burns Abstract Message, label owner, 8D Industries, music publisher, 8D sync but also currently continues consult artists looking to make their way in the industry. Who better to advise than one who has been through the chaos? A lot has changed since the days I have worked and marketing artists and music. It was great to hear about all that is happening here in the Orlando scene. …This is Now One last thing before you go, long time denizens of the Orlando scene are no doubt familiar with the club nite Phat and Jazzy which Michael helped get off the ground. They will be celebrating their 25th anniversary May 11th at the Iron Cow in the Milk District and Michael himself will be spinning records and looking to connect. Be sure to say hello and thank him for helping to keep the scene alive. Rob CobleWhile your in the mood for some new music be sure to check out our Producer Carlos’ web site and show him some love.
