visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more“I remember I got paid $20 for a gig, man,” says RUSTEE ALLEN, funk bassist extraordinaire, first introduced to the world via the transcendent soul staple FRESH by none other than Sly & the Family Stone. “I thought I made a ton of money!” he laughs. “I didn't even know you even got paid for playing,” agrees his good friend and fellow Bay Area legend LEVI SEACER JR., a guitarist who went from playing hardcore jazz in local clubs to touring the world with PRINCE and his New Power Generation. “That's how innocent I was about it… When I got my first check I'm like ‘What's this?'” Rustee was first spotted by the Sly camp as a youngster playing in support of local legend Johnny Talbot, much admired by all the top Bay Area funkateers at the time. Along with drummer WILLIE WILD, (who would later be part of the original lineup of Graham Central Station), Rustee was chosen to back up LITTLE SISTER, an offshoot of Sly's Fam featuring Vet Stone and piloted by Freddie Stone. Next thing Rustee knew, he was “auditioning” to join the Fam as a full-fledged member—in front of 30,000 people in Virginia! Soon after that, Rustee was in the studio for the Fresh sessions, laying down tunes in basically one take each. “The first takes are the best ones anyway,” says Rustee. As for Levi, he spent his youth gigging at spots like Earl's Solano Club in the East Bay, playing jazz with ladies such as Rosie Gaines and Sheila Escovedo. “Playing was like taking a glass of water,” says Levi. “Just natural.” His confidence and skill got him noticed by Don Cornelius of Soul Train fame, who put him to work. Then one day Levi stopped by an audition that Escovedo — now known as Sheila E — was holding for bass players. Though Levi was a guitar man, she asked him to take the gig once she had heard him play “A Love Bizarre” on the four-string. This of course put him in the same orbit as PRINCE himself— who would eventually bring him into the fold not only as a player, but also as writer and producer. Like Rustee, Levi had found himself thrust into the spotlight, breathing the rarefied air of an internationally acclaimed artist with a new band. Rustee's return to Aced Out is a pivotal moment for us, as he was our very first guest for our pilot episode just a little over four years ago. In this inspirational interview, Rustee and Levi describe what made Sly and Prince amazing bandleaders, and what it was really like within those soul circles. As well, Rustee describes why his mother told him he was her most adventurous child, and what it was like onstage and off during Sly's Lifetime Achievement Award performance at the 2006 Grammys, while Levi breaks down how Prince was like a “cool computer” and why every musician in Minneapolis hated the New Power Generation—at first, that is. If all that weren't enough, the purple brothas also bring a band in the studio to perform Rustee's single “You're the One!” Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted by Jay StoneExecutive Producer Scott SheppardWebsite and Graphics by 3chards Engineered by Grace Coleman at Different Fur Studios, San Francisco CA Video & Sound Editing + Interview Mix & Graphics by Nick “Waes” Carden for Off Hand Records, Oakland CA Video Production by Saboor BidarMusical Performance:TONY PROVIDENCE — drumsCARL WHEELER — keysMORGAN DAY – guitarCARL NORDE — vocalsLEVI SEACER JR. — guitar, vocalsRUSTEE ALLEN — bass, vocals Musical Performance Mix by Levi Seacer Jr.Rap verses by Corey the Greatan Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more

1992 - January: Nirvana “Nevermind”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2022 39:02

The album that would bring grunge into the mainstream is Nevermind by Nirvana.  While it was Nirvana's second album, it would be their first on a major label.  It would also see the introduction of Dave Grohl to the band as drummer joining Krist Novoselic on bass, and the iconic and troubled Kurt Cobain who was front man, guitarist, and songwriter for the band.“Troubled” could be a good description of the album as well.  While more polished than their debut album, the songs exhibit a raw emotion, often dark, disturbed, or alienated, but also containing some humor and self-deprecation.  The tracks were more melodic than the first album as well, reflecting Cobain's influences - he was listening to groups like the Pixies and R.E.M. at the time that Nevermind was being recorded.  The album was a surprising success both commercially and critically.  It was nominated for three Grammy awards across two awards ceremonies.  It hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 list in the U.S., hit number 2 on the Australian charts, and number 7 on the British charts.Nevermind was released in September 1991, and friend of the show John Lynch is featuring it as our album pick for January 1992 when it was on top of the charts, knocking off Michael Jackson's Dangerous.  LithiumLithium is a drug used to fight depression and bi-polar disorder.  The lyrics discuss a person trying to fight loss of relationships, wide mood swings and feelings, deciding that he needs to find God before he kills himself.  The alteration between soft and loud sections would become known as emblematic of Nirvana's sound.   PollyThis dark song was inspired by the abduction, torture, and rape of a 14 year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington.   She escaped from her kidnapper at a gas station.  Cobain wrote the lyrics from the perspective of the perpetrator.  Former percussionist Chad Channing is the drummer on this piece.Something in the WayThis song was inspired by a four-month period of homelessness that Cobain experienced around his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington.  It is one of the few autobiographical songs Cobain wrote, as he more typically wrote lyrics inspired in stores from others.  It is featured in the 2022 film, “The Batman.” Come As You AreThis hit single almost resulted in a lawsuit from a band called “The Killing Joke” which had a very similar chord structure.  The lyrics are about the expectations people put on themselves and others, and it encourages people to be themselves.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy series “In Living Color”This comedy variety production from the Wayan brothers would introduce the world to sketches “Men on Film, “Homey the Clown,” and “Fire Marshal Bill” which launched Jim Carrey's career. STAFF PICKS:There's No Other Way by BlurWayne starts us off with London based Blur exhibiting the “Manchester” sound.  The song lyrics highlight the irritation the band felt at having to follow the Manchester trend at the behest of the record company.  “You've taken the fun out of everything.”   This song was Kurt Cobain's favorite song of the year from Britain.Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by George Michael and Elton JohnRob brings us George Michael's live cover of Elton John's 1974 hit.  John joins Michael on stage in the second half of the song during this performance in Chicago.  They had originally performed the duet for Live Aid, and Michael liked it so much that he incorporated the cover into his show.  The original version made it to number 2 in the U.S., and this cover made it to number 1.Diamonds and Pearls by Prince and the New Power GenerationBrian's staff pick is a love song.  It is also the title track to Prince's album with the backing band which was originally named on the 1990 film “Graffiti Bridge.”  The female voice in this song is performed by Rosie Gaines, who tragically suffered from an insulin overdose in 2009, and has experienced a number of diabetic issues over time.No Son of Mine by GenesisJohn Lynch features the final Genesis album with Phil Collins as lead singer, "We Can't Dance."  The lyrics discuss domestic violence.  It is about a man who is a monster to his family.  The song describes a child who runs away from an abusive family situation, and is rejected by his father when he attempts reconciliation later on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:New Recruit by Eric ClaptonThis instrumental track is from the motion picture "Rush."

Label: Paisley Park 18372Year: 1993Condition: MPrice: $11.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy. The B side is a live version of the Prince tune that Sinead O'Connor hit with in 1990, featuring vocals by Rosie Gaines. The A side is an irresistable hard-rock-funk track that would've been a big hit during Prince's peak years a decade earlier. I noticed that in iTunes I put this one in the Hard Rock/Metal category... and it definitely fits there, too! This single coincided with the release of a huge 3-CD Prince compilation set, and neither track was included on any other Prince album. Unless you have the money to spend on the huge Prince compilation, I'd say you're better off buying the 45, especially if you already have all of Prince's LPs and 45s, which the compilation set comprises.

Hippie Torrales becomes one of the most sought out DJ's in New Jersey as he really starts to become a well-known DJ because of Club Dock's in the late 1970's. His famous trick was to let two records mix for long periods without touching them. He is brought in to open the Famous Club Zanzibar in 1979 that was formerly known as Abe's Disco in Newark New Jersey. As his career spans into the 1980's he begins his remix career and helps make The Clark Sisters Song called "Sunshine" a huge hit through his remix. He later hooks up with another label called Music Village Recordings and produces a song that he wrote and sang on called "Your Gonna Miss Me When I am Gone" which went on to sell millions of copies overseas. He is responsible for helping Rosie Gaines have a huge house hit and tours the world and is still going strong today.

Dark Girls, the documentary feature has created a national and international sensation with the development of a movie that details the dynamics of color in the nation and world. This documentary was developed by D.Channsin Berry and Actor Bill Duke. After some great grassroots marketing which included showing the movie in cities around America, Africa, the Caribbean and England the response was incredible with over 11 million hits on the site and 140,000 Facebook friends to date. The movie premiered on Oprah's OWN network with over one million views on the introductory network showing in June 2013 clearly establishing itself as a brand in the American landscape. Director/Producer D.Channsin Berry is back with DARK GIRLS 2…Deep, Dark and Perfect Berry says… ”I'm concentrating more on the triumphs and the beauty on Dark and Light Skin Women and Girls. There will be still some stories of pain and heartache, because many Women and Young girls are still dealing with lack of self-esteem issues because of Colorism. The Big question is… How can Women and Girls get to the place of HEALING and become their higher selves? so, they make better decisions about their lives. So, the documentary film will feature REAL Women, Historians and other Professionals and their recommended procedures for moving past the pain. For example: Focusing on the here and now and not the past. Expressing your pain out loud. Making the decision to “let it go” through FORGIVENESS.” Dark Girls 2 Emotional, yes, Funny yes, Educational yes, Truthful yes…our plan is to give way to more deep rooted conversations, which could lead to healing and acceptance for women and men. Recently, Mr. Berry was on our show talking about DARK GIRLS 2…Deep, Dark and Perfect. During the conversation, Mr. Berry talked about: – Memories of our first meeting during the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival (September 2011) during the world premiere of the first Dark Girls – The story behind the first Dark Girls – Some of his background including knowind what he wanted to do with his life when he was nine years old – At an early age his love for music, television and film and making his first movie in the early 1970's – What did his parents and his grandmother instill in him – Having the same best friend since he was five years old – Some of the musical projects that he has been a part of – A great story about Prince, Chaka Chan and Rosie Gaines and winning a Grammy award for a song on a Nancy Wilson album – The story behind Dark Girls 2 including an emotional and game changing trip to Ghana – How he approached Dark Girls 2 differently than Dark Girls – An incredible story about him and Oprah Winfrey – Some reasons why some Black women use skin creams to lighten their skin – Black community reaction to Black women lightening their skin – The fashion industry and colorism – Ways that Black men support Black women more with the challenges Black women face – Being nervous in a good way about Dark Girls 2 – What would he like the take away for Black men and Black women after they watch Dark Girls 2 – How have the Dark Girls documentaries changed him – Some people that made Dark Girls 2 a reality To find out more information about DARK GIRLS 2…Deep, Dark And Perfect click here You can find out more about Mr. Berry via: Facebook Instagram Visit The Dr. Vibe Show™ at https://www.thedrvibeshow.com/ Please feel free to email The Dr. Vibe Show™ at dr.vibe@thedrvibeshow.com Please feel free to “Like” the “The Dr. Vibe Show” Facebook fan page here God bless, peace, be well and keep the faith, Dr. Vibe

Rosie was introduced to the public in 1990 as the new vocalist and keyboard player on Prince's Nude tour. The first time we heard her on a Prince album, was on Graffiti Bridge. She was also a member of The NPG in the movie (by the same name) and she performed and wrote on the Diamonds And Pearls album. In 1992, after the Diamonds And Pearls tour, Rosie decided it was time for her to go solo again. Rosie also played in a band called The Oasis and A Touch of Class, before joining The Curtis Ohlson Band (with Levi Seacer Jr. on guitar). Levi called Rosie one day and asked her to come to Minneapolis to sing a demo of a song for The Pointer Sisters. While she was doing the demo, Prince came in the studio and asked her to join his band The New Power Generation. Prince often referred to Rosie as his "...lion in my pocket and her name is Rosie G.", and his "Secret Weapon".

Here’s an old Manchester mixtape that was always in the car stereo. I’m a little fuzzy on when it was finished, probably mid summer 1997 guessing from the tunes in the mix. Following the double update 1.1 / 1.2, I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio and cut up a new set of tracks.I’m still quite proud of this session. The tunes are great: a beautiful summer mix of the classic Sueno Latino, Masters At Work’s groove-bound rework of Brand New Heavies’ Sometimes, fat funky remixes of Shola Ama, Ultra Nate and MK’s Always. The Rosie Gaines track reminds me of DJing at Via Fossa because one of the bouncers always requested it, and in this mix it kicks in beautifully to Sandy B’s much-sampled You Make The World Go Around. We even end with a bit of early euro trance...With this being another studio mix, all the tracks are edited and mixed perfectly. Another labour of love, making the most of weekends and down time in the studio.Update 2.0 – studio mix - Spring / Summer 971 Sueño Latino - Sueño Latino - Express Of Sound Groove Bass Mix2 Mary J Blige - Love Is All We Need - Mark's Needy Vocal3 MC Lyte - Cold Rock A Party - Mousse T Club4 Brand New Heavies - Sometimes - MAW Smooth Mix5 Ultra Nate - Free - RIP Up North Dub6 Shola Ama - You Might Need Somebody - Ill-In-Ton's Club Mix7 Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close - Mentor Orig8 Sandy B - Make The World Go Around - Deep Dish 9 MK - Always - Visnadi's Extended Real Love Mix10 Club 69 - Let Me Be Your Underwear - Vocal Club Mix11 Brown/Bollard - Turn Me Sweeter - Bootleg W/L12 Duke - So In Love With You - Full Intention Remix13 DJ Quicksilver - Bellissima - Original 12" Cut14 Lost Tribe - The Distant Voices EP: Gamemaster58.1MB | 128kbps | AAC fileGeek speak:I remember beat-matching and recording all the vinyl on to a Nicam video before loading it into Studer’s Dyaxsis software. I’m not sure why, maybe the video was simply the easiest way to get the tunes onto the computer. Vinyl turntables were removed from the com prod studio just before I started working at Key 103 - in fact the station had recently relocated to Castlefield and the new studios only had turntables in the one production studio that Stu Allen used. Somewhere along the line I made a mistake and the first half of the mix is in mono. I can’t remember how this happened but by the time I’d noticed - which was when I was working on track 9, MK’s Always - it was too late. I’d already completed so much, it would have been a mammoth task to start again from scratch. The mono tracks aren’t too noticeable because parts were mastered with some stereo effects and there’s a wicked point in the MK track where the stereo kicks back in. Simple, but really effective. Enjoy!
