"Think Pachanga Boys' Time…but with soul." The register chimed loudly. He glanced up at the queue of customers steadily gathering and took a deep breath. It was going to be a long hot day. The shop was small and crowded, outside in the street it was scorching, the block was on fire in the midst of the summer and everyone and everything was looking for relief. He would be their answer… He wasn't sure how it had come to be this way, that he was the one to serve. Yet here he was… From time to time he'd have to check himself, check anything, check something. Then the chime would ring out again… The made ace, insanely brilliant Brian d'Souza aka Auntie Flo, releases ‘Aker The Lion God' on 31st October, a precursor to his upcoming album ‘In My Dreams (I'm A Bird and I'm Free)', out on 21 November. PRE-SAVE ALBUM ~ Inspired by field recordings from New Zealand and Brazil, the environmental sounds of a conch shell and a bassline influenced by Charanjit Singh's proto-acid house work is worked into some altogether more ethereal.
This weeks 'Alvorhythms' with Alvin C includes new music from Hologram Teen, Auntie Flo, an East Coast Love Affair remix of Joe Goddard, Skyrager and A Man Called Adam. A couple of tracks bought on Bandcamp, namely Glen Ricks and Alex Kassian, plus twelves from the shelves by Latyrx, Bang The Party, The Emperor Machine and Lazer Worshippers. For more info and tracklisting, visit: https://thefaceradio.com/alvorhythms,/Tune into new broadcasts of Alvorhythms, Wednesdays from 7 AM - 8 AM EST / Midday - 1 PM GMT.//Dig this show? Meet Florence Monde. Mwauluka is an 85-year-old woman popularly known here as Auntie Flo. She is the founder of the Limulunga la Makuwa craft women's club in Mongu district, Western Province, Zambia. Here, 10 women join up to weave mats, mattresses, hats, and baskets, as well as mould pots used as cooking pots, refrigerators, and water purifiers. These products are made from natural materials such as roots, grass, reeds, soil, and water obtained from the Barotse floodplains, which these women have dedicated their lives to protecting. They integrate these natural resources with plastics to craft bags, mattresses, pots, shopping bags, hats, and mats, among others. But Baita Chilemu, working with Auntie Flo, says having few women in leadership among the Barotse people and a lack of markets is a huge setback in their conservation efforts. The Barotse floodplain is a vast land area classified as a Ramsar site, with over 300 bird species and over 130 documented fish species. When flooded, it can reach over 550 000 hectares, acting as a sponge that slowly releases water to the nearby regions that receive low rainfall. But because of climate change, the Barotse loses about 1,500 mm of water annually from evaporation, which reduces the amount of water flowing in the lower Zambezi River system

Now live at the Blur Podcasts, the Paris-born multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ - Blazers! One of our absolute favorites, Blazers grew up surrounded by music, getting his first DJ gigs in Parisian bars before his majority. As one of the hottest French producers, Blazers has released several EPs on labels such as GLBDOM, Sounds of Lava Lava, Berlin House Music, Sengiley Wax and many others. His track ‘Side2Side' catched the attention of British labels, which led his music to be played multiple times on BBC Radio 1, receiving support from the likes of Damian Lazarus, Greg Wilson, Auntie Flo, Mousse T to mention a few. His music is filled with house inspirations from Kerri Chandler, the funk and groove of Roy Ayers and the melodies of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Carried by warm and catchy basses, his tracks oscillate between musical genres to offer an original and always danceable mix. For these reasons and many more he's our guest for the 109th edition of the Blur Podcasts, which is now live on our Soundcloud, Youtube and Apple Podcasts pages. "The mix was recorded in a random house on the Hollywood hills, and the premise was to bring the good vibes into it." Dancers can always be sure of one thing with Moscoman, a certain unpredictability and energy will always define the music he serves up. As well as having a background in indie and rock, he plays house, acid, techno, dark disco, synth, all from a more alternative angle. For that reason, he is a regular at wide-ranging but iconic places like Space in Miami, Panorama Bar, Glastonbury and Pacha Ibiza. Next to all this, Moscoman continues to focus on building his Disco Halal label and brand into a real family. It is a place where artists like Simple Symmetry, Red Axes, Trikk and Auntie Flo have all freely expressed themselves. Like Moscoman's own approach to music, it is an unrestricted label that never fails to subvert and surprise.
Health & wellness is a complicated issue, and so is the butthole, but fortunately this is an issue that combines both those things. This is an episode of enema recipes - from coffee to dish soap to cocaine, and all points in between, and we're going to have a whole lot of fun with this until Auntie Flo shows up. Also apparently Lemon is a boomer for the first half of this episode? Gross. This week, The F Plus takes a handful of Debbie Downers.
Where else but @weheardwonders will you find Queen Bey mingling with yer Auntie Flo and a former Goat Girl? Yep - praise Bey! - Beyoncé is back with the first taster from her eagerly-anticipated follow-up to Lemonade. But is it any good? We also share our thoughts on Auntie Flo & Sarathy Korwar's minimal electronica-Indian classical synthesis, Wax Machine's psychedelic paean to Springtime, Naima Bock's green-fingered progressive folk, and a “sexy, happy song” from MUNA. The first third of March's TSOR has a beautiful melancholy about it. Kicking-off with our current label release from Dee Montero - ‘Athena' (taken from the Odisea EP - a project that marks his return to the Renaissance label for the first time in 13 years!), it segues into the haunting ‘Episode' from Woe who hails from Montreal, a city fast becoming a hot-bed for some of the best electronic music producers on the planet, and Namito's hair-raising ‘Relentless'. The mix then goes through its customary gear shift with Sasha-championed Sentre; Milio's acid-tinged ‘Never Say Never' and the seminal Dixon edit of Revenge's Auntie Flo rework, before Dee returns with his EP title track, ‘Odisea', stunningly remixed by Man Power and Raxon drops the techno bass-bomb ‘2121'. Finally, we preview our next release from the hotly-tipped Forgotten Notes, whose ‘Resurrect' contains a production masterclass of a breakdown. Today we talk about a topic that is typically taken as taboo… Menstruation. Otherwise known as periods or riding the crimson wave. Those of us with a uterus have - or have had - a visit from Auntie Flo. We typically greet period time with chocolate, heating pads, and resentment. How can we move past the cultural and societal shame around periods and gain a greater sense of acceptance and fulfillment regarding our ever-changing bodies? In this episode, I chat with Cassandra Wilder from Goddess Ceremony about menstrual cycles. She shares her knowledge on how the menstrual cycle affects those of us who have it and steps we can take to sync our cycle with the phases of the moon. A true student of world music, specifically scenes across West Africa, Auntie Flo’s music is an always authentic distillation of afro drums and rhythms. His latest album was the finest example of that and featured collaborators from Senegal, Cuba and London who all added a true sense of character to his meticulous production. The tracks ranged from broken beat to string laced soul and featured found sounds from Moroccan markets and bustling townships that took you on a truly global adventure. His mix, of course, travels just as far and wide and plays out like an audio diary that tells a thousand stories. There's gorgeous instrumental fair setting the scene and sojourns into heavy drums that’ll have you in a trance psychedelic melting pots of intoxicating synths and wind instruments and steamy and menace, it takes you places you’ll likely never have been before.

Welcome to the Hot Air Podcast for the Ransom Note. This time around I caught up with an artist who I’ve been following for some time now, but every time I hear some new output there’s always something there that’s fresh and surprising. Brian De Souza, better known as Auntie Flo, hails from Glasgow, and the city’s rich electronic music history is deeply engrained in his psyche. Originally embarking on a path rooted in house and techno, Brian quickly expanded his musical horizons to incorporate sounds and textures from all corners of the globe, pushing this broader pallet in his productions, and also via his long running club night Highlife. With a new album having just dropped on Brownswood, I stopped by his north London flat for broad ranging chat in his kitchen over a nice cup of coffee. We delved deep into his formative years growing up in Glasgow and talked about the process of putting the album together, but we started off with some surprising alternative meanings for his artist name. Listen to the podcast, brought to you courtesy of Rode microphones whom without this would never have been possible...

In 2017, Glasgow based label Huntleys + Palmers celebrates ten years in action. In that time, Andrew Thomson has ensured it became a fertile musical breeding ground and an impossible to pin down outlet that offers up anything from afro to techno to bass music. Auntie Flo, SOPHIE and Alejandro Paz have all emerged from the Glasgow based stable and have put out music that plays with off kilter rhythms. Andrew's curatorial ear has also made the parties of the same name just as unpredictable, and before it closed he was also a programmer at London’s legendary Plastic People. The mix he has served up here under the Huntleys + Palmers moniker, takes a typically widescreen view and includes “tracks that I've been playing for a while and expect I'll continue to play in years to come.” Starting steady and worldly with dub and deep cosmic grooves, it grows more twisted with wiry electronics and frazzled synths before pulling back again, then repeating the cycle. Multi Culti is full of life, an elaborate project which has sky rocketed, blossoming with musical heritage and a new wave of artists. Red Axes, Clarian, Auntie Flo, Nicola Cruz, Manfredas and many more have all appeared on the imprint. Thomas von Party and Dreems first founded the record label back in 2013, unaware of the course it might take. The two are both independent producers and dj's in their own right, however, together they offer something else entirely. We are delighted to be able to welcome the pair to contribute to our Ransom Note mix series, a duo who need very little introduction.

In 2011 Brian d'Souza released his first EP on Glasgow based record label Huntleys & Palmers, this was to be the debut of Auntie Flo. Some five years later his musical progression has evolved substantially. Last year saw him release the critically acclaimed 'Theory Of Flo' accompanied by a brand new live show. His sounds sees him dabble between the crossovers of world music, dance and balearic obscurity. He captures a sun kissed sound which you would certainly not associate with the bleak and rainy forecast which so often swamps Glasgow. He steps up to deliver us over an hour of percussion, exclusives, earthly samples and beyond: a real treat.

This week’s podcast shines light on Esa (Williams) also known as Mervin Granger. Although his mother land is South Africa, and he was one of Glasgow’s underground key figures, he’s currently located in London. As an integral part of the Auntie Flo live set up, he has played at Europe's leading venues and festivals including Fabric, Razzmatazz, Sub Club, Plastic People, and Snafu. Be sure to check his contributions to Huntleys + Palmers sister label Highlife and keep an eye for al upcoming releases. The mix is an interesting, storytelling affair heading off through some African ambience, playful and melodic house and plenty of other left of centre grooves. It is a mix where each new track sounds wholly different than the last, but with an underlying sense of worldly rhythm the thing that ties it all together. This, then, is a personal glimpse into he world of Esa and his crew, and one that makes for absorbing listening.
The latest edition of the Meet the Locals podcast comes from a relative newcomer to the DC underground house music scene. Originally hailing from Scotland, Doktor D can be found spinning regularly at various venues in DC. Over to Doktor D for more info about the mix: "For my DC House Grooves mix I really tried to pay homage to the ethos of House music in Washington, DC; but with a twist that reflects more of me as a DJ. This meant working with deeper shades of House music which retain the funkier DC associated with the nation’s capital. I also wanted to showcase some European tracks which share a similar ethos but often very different routes and influences. Being from the UK, I especially wanted to showcase some up and coming British talent. So look out for tracks by Fort Romeau and Auntie Flo as well as an innovative remix of Marc Poppcke’s “Inner Conflict” by Last Day on Earth’s Thermal Bear. In terms of adding a personal touch, I made a concerted effort to occasionally shift the onus of the mix to a more Tech-edged sound. I think that breaking genre barriers is a great way of playing a wider of selection of music to your audience and introducing your crowd to different, often new, sounds. That’s enough from me though; I hope that you enjoy my mix!" You can catch Doktor D at his monthly night "Silicon Based Lifeform" at Dr. Clock's Nowhere Bar, and also at the regular nights "Blueprint" and "Prescription" at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club. You can catch him next at Dr. Clock's Nowhere Bar on Feb 18 2015. SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/doktore-d Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/djdoktord

Take a deep breath and breathe in the colourful, ambient electronica of Matthias Zimmermann’s Clash mix. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed. German producer Zimmermann makes synth-led electronica with a subtle hip hop wash that hits somewhere between charmingly eccentric electro and early Warp bleep-house, all of it pretty delicious. For his Clash mix, Zimmerman breaks out a host of excellent names, including Daniel Avery, DJ T., Martyn, Daphni and Auntie Flo, but there’s a hidden method to his selections. Firstly, consider the words of Zimmermann’s record label, Sound Pellegrino “All tracks on Matthias Zimmermann’s releases have first names and constitute the population of an Isla we’re gradually exploring with him.” And here’s Zimmermann’s explanation of his mix: “The mix puts the listener in the position of being marooned on the ISLA. It describes the plot in different phases: - shipwreck - blurred perception of the environment - alien impressions - realization of the dramatic situation - starting to brace oneself - exploration - being captivated by peerless purity - looking out for shelter - building a makeshift home - hunting for food - struggle in the wilderness - growing desperation . . . - escape” So there you have it. A desert island drama told through the medium of contemporary electronica – a concept we fully approve of. But whether you get on board with the shipwreck vibe or not, it still makes for damn fine listening. Matthias Zimmermann’s ‘Botanica Dub’ EP is out now on Sound Pellegrino.
