Send us Fan MailOn today's show we travel down the road to Carlow University Pittsburgh's MFA in Creative Writing Program during its annual June residency at Trinity College, Dublin where we have been invited to interview novelist Caitriona Lally about her latest book, the memoir Home Economics. So grab that flat white, latte, tea and rasher sandwich and have a listen to Caitriona's fascinating account of balancing life as a cleaner in the housekeeping department of Trinity College with the life of a successful writer. Bold and thought-provoking, self-deprecating and soaked in Caitríona Lally's singular voice, her first memoir quietly but forcefully puzzles over personal/home economics, creativity and the true impact of 'success' and 'failure' on a writer's life.'Since I've had my first book published, I've earned more from cleaning than from writing. The home economics don't add up.'Between 2015 and 2021, Caitríona Lally published her first two novels, Eggshells and Wunderland. To buy her time to write during those years, she returned to the housekeeping department at Trinity College Dublin, a job she once held as a student. This begins a negotiation between the practical and creative demands of her life, further complicated when she becomes pregnant and almost impossible when the pandemic hits.Reviews for Home Economics"This is absolutely one to read about the reality of 'making it' as an artist, and how to live, make money and create."– AOIFE BARRY, THE JOURNAL"Hilarious, audacious, and deeply felt. An idiosyncratic hymn to the drudgery of life!"– SARA BAUME"I thought I'd be interested in Home Economics because I too work a manual job that pays a pittance, yet still provides more income than writing books. And yes, Lally is wonderfully insightful about the difficulties and advantages of such a life. But in the end it was her wit, her ever-curious and amused outlook on the daily trials and joys of life, that had me hooked. This book has that delicate quality of seeming simple while containing all the complexity of trying not simply to make a living, but to live."– LUCY SWEENEY BYRNE "A remarkable piece of writing ... As a fellow writer, I read the book with a profound sense of respect for what Caitríona has achieved, particularly given the difficult circumstances under which much of this work has been produced. Her account of sustaining a writing life alongside paid labour and motherhood is both unsparing and generous, and it resonated deeply with me ... There is something quietly bracing in encountering such a lucid account of a writing life, one that refuses myth-making while still allowing space for ambition, desire and joy ... This is a generous, intelligent and finely wrought book."– PATRICK HOLLOWAYLogo designed by Freya Sirr.Intro/outro music: Colm Mac Con Iomaire, 'Thou Shalt Not Carry' from The Hare's Corner, 2008, with thanks to Colm for permission to use it. Support the show

Over the past couple of weeks, headlines have described a tragic murder suicide involving a couple going through a divorce, once again framing it as a "contentious divorce." Let's be very clear about something: divorce did not cause what happened. Divorce does not cause murder. Domestic violence causes murder. That is why Susan Guthrie is doing this difficult but important solo episode. She walks through the patterns of abuse, the high risk indicators that change a situation entirely, why the moment of separation is so dangerous, and what a thoughtful, strategic exit actually looks like. This conversation moves from awareness to action, so if any part of what you hear feels familiar, you have something calm and structured to carry with you as you think through your next steps. Covered in this episode: Why the moment of separation is often the most dangerous time, and how understanding that allows you to move more thoughtfully and strategically. The high risk indicators to take seriously: strangulation, threats to kill, access to firearms, stalking, extreme jealousy or control, and statements like "if I can't have you, no one will." What a thoughtful, strategic exit actually looks like, from quiet planning and digital safety to building a small, trusted circle of support. Why your children and pets must be part of your safety plan from the very beginning. ⚠️ IMPORTANT: ACCESS TO A FIREARM SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES YOUR RISK If there is access to a firearm and you are leaving, you have to take that seriously. It significantly increases risk. This is where having professional guidance before you leave, and as you are making your plan, becomes critical. Find a domestic violence advocate Find a divorce coach who specializes in helping people experiencing domestic abuse or violence Meet with an attorney who understands the risks Include your children and your pets in your safety plan from the beginning Do not announce your plan before you are ready, as that can increase your risk This is not a time for informal arrangements. The structure of your plan will matter, and getting guidance early on and plotting your strategy so that it is fully developed can make a meaningful difference.   FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Safety First, A Practical Exit and Protection Plan for High-Risk Relationships Susan created a companion guide to go along with this episode. Can you remember what it was like to be a teenager? This week, author Olivia De Zilva joins us again to recall the feelings and stories that shaped us when we were young. As an ex-teenager and current writer for teens/young adults, Olivia has much wisdom to share about the whimsy and grittiness that characterise those formative years. Over the past few decades, what’s changed and what’s remained the same about books for young readers? What do teenagers really want to read? And how do authors express life’s messiness to younger audiences without being paternalistic? If you love YA or know somebody who does — check out Olivia De Zilva’s latest novel, Eggshell! It’s the current Amy & book of the month and we’d love to see you at our live book club over on YouTube on April 23 (7pm ACST). Are you using egg shells correctly in your garden and flowerbeds?Egg shells are one of the most commonly recommended organic ingredients for powering up garden soil and plants. And for good reason! Egg shells are rich in calcium, which happens to be a critical nutrient for strong plant cell walls. Calcium is also vital for overall plant health.Calcium also plays a critical role in the formation of fruit. In fact, when there is a lack of available calcium, common garden ailments like blossom end rot on tomatoes and peppers can be a big issue. For all of the reasons above, egg shells, which are made up of over 90% calcium carbonate, can certainly help provide calcium to your plants and the soil they grow in.But here's the issue – most gardeners don't use them in a way that maximizes their benefits. Today - Jim & Mary cover the best ways to use egg shells to give your plants and the soil the power it needs!

In this episode of What to Say and How to Say It, Shy Lewis and Nina Roesner continue their series on healing generational trauma using the Connection Steps. Many of us learned how to survive growing up—pushing down emotions, overfunctioning, or trying to fix everyone else. But God doesn't heal us by shaming our pain. He heals us by comforting it. Today we talk about how to move from survival mode to soothing, learning to become a safe place for your own heart while receiving God's comfort.   In this episode, you'll learn: Why many families pass down emotional neglect How trauma disrupts our ability to self-comfort The difference between validation and comfort Simple ways to regulate your emotions and nervous system How inviting God into your pain brings real healing Why learning to self-soothe helps break generational patterns   When we learn to receive God's comfort, we stop demanding others regulate us and start showing up in healthier ways for our marriages and families.

You feel it when your estranged (or formerly estranged) adult child is in the room. The conversation is surface-level. You second-guess everything. You remind yourself, "I have to be careful." "Walking on eggshells" is a common experience for parents of estranged adult children, especially during the reconciliation phase of estrangement. Parents might not know exactly why their child became distant, but they want to keep it from happening again.  Some parents feel afraid of making their child angry. They desperately want to avoid conflict, even while wishing for more closeness. They're caught between fear and longing. Almost all parents feel awkward after estrangement, as they embrace different skills and behaviors for the first time. The journey from "conscious incompetence" to "conscious competence" and beyond, can be long. Ongoing tension can be expected after estrangement, in the context of your personal history. And there may be no getting around that walking-on-eggshells feeling for a while. But parents who can recognize, understand, and tolerate it might have an easier time. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss a topic that is near and dear to Dr. White's heart - the relational dynamic between parents and grandparents. As a father of four children and a grandfather to 16 grandchildren, this is a topic where he is very well versed. Marriage and family are foundational institutions in God's created order of our world. And when those families break down, particularly when there are divides and discord between parents and grandparents, the younger generations are impacted in countless ways. Episode Links As Alexis mentioned at the top of the episode, many of the topics covered on the Church & Culture Podcast are inspired by blogs that Dr. White has written. For those new to the podcast, the Church & Culture Blog is where Dr. White releases two reflections each week about a wide assortment of topics related to the church's engagement with the modern world. If you aren't currently a subscriber, you can click HERE to subscribe now. For this week's podcast, there are three recent blogs that Dr. White has written that we'd suggest you to go back and read. They are: “A Vision for Grandparenting,” “Grandparent-to-Parent Mistakes” and “Parent-to-Grandparent Mistakes.” And again, this topic is so important because it's absolutely a part of the vision for family that is outlined in the Bible. Dr. White mentioned a book written by Paul and Diana Miller called A Guide to Great Grandparenting, which talked about this idea of a “family trinity.” When these relationships are healthy, you find that you have healthy and functional young people being raised. He also talked about a large national study on how parents can best pass on their faith to the next generation. You can read more about this in Handing Down the Faith: How Parents Pass their Religion on to the Next Generation written by Christian Smith and Amy Adamczyk. There are two articles that were applicable to today's conversation that we want to share with you: Rheana Murray, “‘Grandparenting on Eggshells,'” The Atlantic, November 26, 2025. Dr. Perri Klass, “5 Common Mistakes Grandparents Make, According to a Pediatrician,” The Washington Post, November 17, 2025. Finally, as mentioned this is a topic on which Dr. White has a lot of experience to draw from. And over the years at Mecklenburg Community Church, he's given many series that fall under the category of “Marriage & Family.” You can find those series gathered at Church & Culture HERE. In addition to the blog, we'd encourage you to check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Liz Sjaastad, author of the book You're Too Young to Understand. Believing that memoir offers both a pathway to understanding those different from us and to finding community, Liz shares her personal stories in writing and in speaking.   During her first act as an adult she balanced her way through a career in organization development, volunteering for mental health organizations, and having three babies. Her second act has been writing a book and raising teenagers with her husband. Her third act is still in its first draft.   You can find Liz in St. Paul, Minnesota, on a tennis court, pickleball court, or walking her dogs with her hubby. If not, she'll be in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area paddling and hiking about.   In my book review, I stated You're Too Young to Understand is a memoir by Liz Fiedorow Sjaastad. Her story outlines life with a schizophrenic mother and an alcoholic father from childhood and through the later years of her parents' lives. Because of her open nature, Liz gives readers a glimpse into a world of dysfunction and what it is like to live with those who suffer from mental illness and addiction.   What I loved most was that her stories, though often covering difficult topics, were funny, touching, and very real. Even with all that was going on, there was love, tenderness, happy times, and family togetherness. What could have been an indictment against her parents reads more like a story about family, what it means, and how to care for it even in the face of terrible odds.   I walked away understanding how difficult it can be to get someone the help they need, and how taboo mental illness and addiction still are in our society. I also love that Liz, despite all she went through as a child, found a way to live life to the fullest.   If you are looking for a story of love and hope, then look no further.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Liz Sjaastad Website: https://www.lizsjaastad.com/ IG: @lizsjaastad X: @LizSjaastad FB: @lsjaastad LinkedIn: @Liz Sjaastad   Purchase You're Too Young to Understand on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4nRUpu9 Ebook: https://amzn.to/3IyyBo4   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Natalie Lawrence is an author and illustrator who explores our relationship with the natural world, looking through multiple lenses - from the biological to the mythic and psychoanalytic. She completed a MSc and Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge, exploring the making and meanings of monstrous creatures in seventeenth century Europe. She published her first book as a teenager, Feathers and Eggshells, inspired by Hampstead Heath and the birds she was entranced by as a child, and published Planta Sapiens with Paco Calvo in 2022. She has also given a TedX talk, appeared on BBC Radio, and worked with installation artists.  In this chat, we talk about humans' fascination for monsters, how the walrus was originally conceived of as being a monster, the Hydra of Hamburg, cryptids as contemporary monsters and the ways in which our understanding of what is real and what exists has changed over the centuries.
