The Power of 3 has hit the road once again. Dave and Kenny made the trip down the M74/M6 to Manchester, for John Nathan-Turner Day, which was held at the Anthony Burgess Institute. They discuss Me and Him and Who, Stephen Wyatt's play about JNT and his partner Gary Downie, and speak with producer Gareth Kavanagh about it, as well as Stephen, actor Richard Unwin who plays JNT, and JNT's biographer Richard Marson. We also get the thoughts of Blue Peter's 42nd presenter Abby Cook - a Doctor Who fan, who just happens to come from Scotland!

There's no hiding the fact that John Nathan-Turner is one of the most controversial figures in the history of Doctor Who. As the show's producer from 1980-1989, he cast three Doctors, a host of companions, and became a fixture at conventions on both sides of the Atlantic. However, Richard Marson's biography revealed a darker side to John and his partner Gary Downie, as JNT suffered from an alcohol addiction in later life, when he struggled to find work. This struggle features in a play, Me and Him and Who, written by Stephen Wyatt - author of Paradise Towers and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy - which is being performed next week. Dave and Kenny discuss John and his legacy, and are joined by Stephen to talk about the John and Gary he knew. Find out more at https://www.fatsoma.com/e/7jir2f8n/me-and-him-and-who

Blue Peter was such a facet of BBC television for so many years. Although still on CBBC, the good ol' days come from when it was on BBC1. We wanted to celebrate the golden era of Blue Peter and talk to some folks involved with the programme! Peter Purves was a presenter Blue Peter from 1967-1978. His love and knowledge of the program is immense. We decided not to talk about Doctor Who but focus on his time on Blue Peter, talk about the good times and also the times that were frustrating. In another interview with speak with Gethin Jones. Gethin had been a Blue Peter presenter from 2005-2007. These two gentlemen did the same role at very different times. Peter was a presenter during the glorious 70's while Gethin was a presenter just as the series made a very serious change that would forever change the lineage of the program! What holds these two interviews together is Richard Marson. Richard had been working on the show for years with finally taking over the show in 2003. He knows Peter very well as well as Gethin, being that he hired Gethin! Richard is the one who interviews these brilliant men but also parts of Richard's story is weaved into the narrative too. Listening to Gethin's loves and respect to the legacy of Blue Peter is incredible just as it is heartbreaking to hear what happened to the show once Richard left. This episode has some downs but a lot of ups as we celebrate on of the greatest series the BBC ever made! If you have feedback or questions you would like to have read on the podcast or general inquiries, please contact us at feedback@fromthearchive.co.uk. We would love to hear from you! Life, Interrupted with Simon Thomas

Richard Marson maybe not a name many of you will know. For over thirty years, Richard has been an important figure within the TV industry. He's worked on some of the most recognizable programs in British television from Top of the Pops to the Paul Daniels Magic Show to Going Live. Richard is best known for the years he spent as a talented producer and then editor on the BBC his iconic children's show Blue Peter. Richard had it all, a brilliant career and a loving family. But in 2008, his life was interrupted by the unimaginable and any parent's worst nightmare. On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, Richard and his family woke up to discover that their fouteen year old son Rupert had taken his life. Just finding a reason to even carry on living was at times a daily battle. But over the past thirteen years, the color has slowly began to seep back into Richard's life. As someone who I've known for over twenty years as a friend and colleague, I can honestly say, Richard is a remarkable person. I have no doubt that his story will move you and encourage you, in equal measure. If you have been through life events similar to those described in this episode and you need someone to talk to, please contact The Samaritans, on 116 123 And if you'd like to share your thoughts with Simon, he'd love to hear from you: Twitter @SimonThomasSky

Former Doctor Who Magazine writer and long time Blue Peter editor Richard Marson (who has also written books on Doctor Who producers John Nathan-Turner and Verity Lambert) decided he'd rather chat to your host, Toby Hadoke, about his favourite things from Terror of the Autons. And it makes for a most illuminating chat that reveals much about the early days of fandom from someone at the coalface. Richard also takes us on a trip through the many highs of a story full of inventive death and teatime horror.

Afterwards, Toby and Richard have a chat about some of the great figures in Doctor Who history whom Richard interviewed back in the day. But will they agree on the best things about this episode and the story as a whole? there's only one way to find out...

Killer policemen, killer daffodils and a killer doll - not-so-fantastic plastic is the cause of much mayhem in this episode of Doctor Who. But which particular manifestation of it will find favour with your host Toby Hadoke? He has to try to guess what his special guest - writer and producer Richard Marson - has chosen to eulogise about this particular episode of Doctor Who. The pair have a good old chinwag about the Terror of the Autons, and about Doctor Who's history and some of its key figures, but will it be quarries or quarrels at the end of the day...?

What's the scariest thing about Terror of the Autons, the multiple deaths-by-plastic, the amount of CSO, or the rather dated approach to animal welfare on display? You decide. Your host Toby Hadoke and his special guest, TV producer Richard Marson, are on hand to bring you their thoughts - Richard was around on first broadcast and so can provide a bit of context, and Toby is learning to love a story he has hitherto been somewhat ambivalent about. To tie in with this week's Blu-Ray release of Season 8, it's time to celebrate its opening story, which was a great big relaunch for Doctor Who. The first appearance of The Master, Jo Grant and Captain Yates, it also features the return of the Autons but an altogether more colourful palette than the muted tones for gritty old Season 7. Special guest Richard Marson -who pretty much was Doctor Who Magazine back in the day, but who has also written books about key figures in the series and has been the main man at Blue Peter - chats to Toby about the story and his role in the early years of fandom in a fascinating post-episode interview. So the format changes slightly for this instalment of Happy Times and Places, which is kind of appropriate when you think about it.

For many of us, our festive viewing includes the groundbreaking 1984 BBC television adaptation of The Box Of Delights. This has enthralled viewers for 35 years. We have decided that we needed to celebrate this milestone by having a conversation with the director of this incredible serial, Renny Rye. Take a listen as we talk with Renny about his career and how he got connected with The Box of Delights. It’s a fun conversation that spans not only that series but some of his other work too. We are also happy to finally bring everyone the second part of our interview with Richard Marson. If you recall way back to Episode 10, we talked with Richard about the his documentary, Tales of Television Centre but this time we talk about what it actually was like to work within BBC Television Centre and how fun and how difficult it could be working there. This is a great conversation with some really smart analysis on how the BBC works. Sprinkled into the episode is some clips from the missing 1971 Boxing Day edition of The Golden Shot. Clips include Bob Monkhouse, Alfie Bass, Stephen Lewis, and a performance from Mary Hopkin.  These are some wonderful archive clips that haven’t been heard in nearly 50 years! BBC Television Centre has a place in many of hearts that adore British television. When news came about its closure, it upset many that the BBC would leave such an iconic location. Directed by Richard Marson, Tales of Television Centre, brought together a wide spectrum of people who worked most of their careers there to bring us some of the warmest memories of our “concrete donut”. We talk with Richard about the making of this documentary and what it was like making it, creating the tone of the piece and an insight on what the BBC wanted to name it just prior to transmission! David Kitchen's back! Well, if you heard our '21 Replacements For 12' episode on February 1, you'd know that, but this is the first time in 2017 that Rob sits down to discuss Doctor Who with Dave on the flagship edition of the show. During today's episode, they cover: – Listener emails from John Hole and 'Kazza' which cover Children of the Dogstar; Chocky; casting a female Doctor; and whether Rob and Dave are 50th Anniversary deniers. - Errors Department: paper with the corners cut off to make it look futuristic is a Battlestar Galactica thing, not a Babylon 5 thing. Rob's mistake. - What Doctor Who music has stood out for you, and why? Nu Who or classic series, we want to hear it all from you. No pun intended. Email us -- hello@theDWshow.net -- or tell us on our Facebook or Twitter. - Doctor Who Series 10: we have a release date; Missy's return and will this be her final hurrah?; the Ice Warriors return with an all-new version but will this be a great or dodgy Gatiss episode; Dave's Pearl Mackie conspiracy theory. - Doctor Who Series 11: production has been pushed back, so we won't see it in April of 2018 as many had been expecting after we 'reset the clock' this year. - Doctor Who news: Vale, John Hurt; Big Finish sale perhaps prefaces the retirement of CDs 51 - 125 as physical media and Big Finish chat in general - what are Rob and Dave buying and why?; the essay book Hating to Love (which we interviewed JR Southall about on an earlier episode), has been released - and Dave and Rob each have a copy; future Watching Books releases. - Dave's adventures in the UK: meeting the Blue Box Podcast & Diddly Dum podcast crews; are podcasts replacing Doctor Who clubs in the modern day?; visiting Doctor Who locations in the UK. - Totally Tasteless: The Life of John Nathan-Turner by Richard Marson. - What are we watching beyond Doctor Who? Dave cites The Goldbergs and Riverdale while Rob opts for the Santa Clarita Diet. - Some more quick thoughts on Series 10 of Doctor Who before we go.

First came BAFTA winning Educating Yorkshire, then Educating Essex. So why not adapt their documentary skills to filming children, thought production company Twofour That's how the returning CBBC series Our School was born. The first series was set in Conyers School in Teeside. The current series shows life in Greenwood Academy in Castle Vale, Birmingham. Kez Margrie, CBBC's executive producer, says she hopes the series will help make the transition from primary school to “big” school easier. That's not to say that it's all smiles and laughter during the series. Some storylines show some of the children finding the jump to secondary school hard, with one boy, Isaac, having sessions with the school's youth worker, Sean. Executive producer Richard Marson says they thought carefully before deciding what to show from their conversations. And what about having cameras and the production team all over the school? And then having the results shown on television? Performing arts teacher and series narrator Trevor Evans advises the school thought long and hard about all aspects of what doing the series could bring - positive and negative. Our School doesn't just see the children growing up, but also the production team. One of the best things, Richard says, was being able to take some of the team from the first series onto the second, with researchers moving to assistant producer roles and even producing episodes. *This podcast was recorded in a public space and therefore some audio is not to our usual standards.*

The upcoming book "JN-T: The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan-Turner" is quite possibly the most controversial account of the behind-the-scenes world of Doctor Who ever published, delving into the, at times, seedy side of the life of the long time producer of Doctor Who. It also covers, with astonishing detail, the trials and tribulations that occurred during the making of the programme in the 1980s when the BBC were increasingly trying to kill it. We present an interview with the book's author, Richard Marson, who explains the amount of work that went into researching the biography, as well as discuss his own experiences and opinions on the man who was responsible for Doctor Who for an entire decade.
