Ugh, this episode is so phony, so plastic. You think you know someone, and it turns out they're just some clone or automaton. It's so hard to meet REAL people anymore these days, you know?

It's May 1975, and Terrance Dicks' second book in three months. Will his increased writers' output affect his style, descriptive powers, wit, pizzazz? ... obviously not. This book is tremendous and actually an improvement over the TV serial in several spots. In the first half of the episode, Jason breaks down why this novelization is such an upgrade from TV, and why the mere act of opening the book brings a lump to his throat. In the second half, Jason is joined by a very old internet friend from the rec.arts.drwho days, Eric Gjovaag. Eric tells some wild stories about the old days of American Doctor Who fandom in the 1980s and '90s, and these are not to be missed. You can find Erc's own Wizard of Oz book and other Oz writings, as well as his long-running Oz homepage, and his Doctor Who fan club's page.

A new assistant, a face from the past and the return of an old enemy. Not the best start to the day for The Doctor. This week, Paddy and Tricia watch as The Doctor and his new assistant Jo come face to face with one of his old rivals who is about the subject the Earth to the Terror of the Autons.
The Brothers continue their journey through the first and last stories of every companion. This time, it's Jo Grant! We watched Terror Of The Autons and The Green Death and talked about all things Katy Manning. Enjoy!
It's a new season. The Doctor is still stuck on Earth and Sarah finds out Liz isn't coming back. Be sure to follow us on TikTok at @pulltoopen, and listen to this week's podcast to find out the prize for being our 1,000th follower! We all know there's a great future in plastics, but what about the past? The Randomizer brings us back to 1970s(-ish) Britain, where the Doctor is still in exile and those pesky store-window dummies are coming to life again. But retreading the same monster as last season's premiere isn't why we remember Terror of the Autons — it's the introduction of the Master that makes the story such a landmark. Roger Delgado nails the character's casual, murderous evil from minute one, which almost makes you forgive his inability to fully think through his diabolical plans. (Who knew summoning a plastic-controlling giant octopus from space might be a bad idea?) While Terror is notable for its many firsts, including the debuts of Katy Manning as Jo Grant and Richard Franklin as Mike Yates, does the story measure up to its ambition? Toss your troll doll by the fire, straighten your plastic daffodils, and come listen to find out. It's 1971 and Doctor Who is being reinvented for its 8th season! New companion! New recurring villain! New Autons! But what do Alex and Andy make of it? While there is much love for a particular stunt sequence and the horribly decorated interior of Rossini's grubby caravan, the pair struggle to like the story and reflect on why it might be that they've only watched it a few times. They have questions too. Boy, do they have questions! Why does Farrell merely 'not take to The Master' when he raised his arm to thump him? What would adults do with that troll doll? And why does The Master suddenly give up his entire plan?! Let's not even mention that Morse Code sequence. Along the way they make sidesteps into The Brothers and Blue Peter and as usual there's a jolly quiz, trips back into musical yesteryears courtesy of the Time-Space Visualiser, and for the first time the story is scored by the 'TARDISes out of 10' metric. So go make yourself a cup of coffee in your CSO kitchen and prepare to cosy up for some classic Who podcastery. Next Time: The Time Meddler
Former Doctor Who Magazine writer and long time Blue Peter editor Richard Marson (who has also written books on Doctor Who producers John Nathan-Turner and Verity Lambert) decided he'd rather chat to your host, Toby Hadoke, about his favourite things from Terror of the Autons. And it makes for a most illuminating chat that reveals much about the early days of fandom from someone at the coalface. Richard also takes us on a trip through the many highs of a story full of inventive death and teatime horror.
A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
Join Joe & Steven as they dive into the dayglow 70s of army mullets, satanic villains and slavish CSO! We love Jo and the Master, the Doctor is being a prick, and we discuss how this era salvaged and ensured the future of Doctor Who.
We left the Doctor almost literally hangin' on the telephone, but what else in in store for him, special guest Richard Marson and host Toby Hadoke as the Master's plan nears completion. Afterwards, Toby and Richard have a chat about some of the great figures in Doctor Who history whom Richard interviewed back in the day. But will they agree on the best things about this episode and the story as a whole? there's only one way to find out...
Killer policemen, killer daffodils and a killer doll - not-so-fantastic plastic is the cause of much mayhem in this episode of Doctor Who. But which particular manifestation of it will find favour with your host Toby Hadoke? He has to try to guess what his special guest - writer and producer Richard Marson - has chosen to eulogise about this particular episode of Doctor Who. The pair have a good old chinwag about the Terror of the Autons, and about Doctor Who's history and some of its key figures, but will it be quarries or quarrels at the end of the day...?
They're back! Autons are running amuck and now we have a new face in The Master making his debut and a new companion in Jo. Will plastic beat... uh... not plastic? Who knows! What's the scariest thing about Terror of the Autons, the multiple deaths-by-plastic, the amount of CSO, or the rather dated approach to animal welfare on display? You decide. Your host Toby Hadoke and his special guest, TV producer Richard Marson, are on hand to bring you their thoughts - Richard was around on first broadcast and so can provide a bit of context, and Toby is learning to love a story he has hitherto been somewhat ambivalent about. But that's the point really - now watch out for those clowns....
To tie in with this week's Blu-Ray release of Season 8, it's time to celebrate its opening story, which was a great big relaunch for Doctor Who. The first appearance of The Master, Jo Grant and Captain Yates, it also features the return of the Autons but an altogether more colourful palette than the muted tones for gritty old Season 7. Special guest Richard Marson -who pretty much was Doctor Who Magazine back in the day, but who has also written books about key figures in the series and has been the main man at Blue Peter - chats to Toby about the story and his role in the early years of fandom in a fascinating post-episode interview. So the format changes slightly for this instalment of Happy Times and Places, which is kind of appropriate when you think about it.

Our next stop in our exploration of all things Brigadier and UNIT is a pair of alien invasion stories with good parts and... well, yeah, both have more than their fair share of bad parts. Allison very much continues to have Luke Rattigan thoughts. But "Terror Of The Autons" might be the more disappointing entry here, especially when something that is both sequel to "Spearhead From Space" and introduction for the Master should have plenty of awesomeness to spare. We dive into why the story doesn't work as well as it ought to, plus Alasdair busts out another classic Who history lesson.

"I am usually referred to as the Master." Or some very slight variation thereof. Terror of the Autons is a story where a bloomin' cockernee is masquerading as an Italian, a Time Lord as an astral Mr Benn, Autons as an army of Frank Sidebottoms, and the man himself as BT's most sackable employee. Yet the Master can't muster the energy to think up an even vaguely misdirecting pseudonym. Plenty of imagination elsewhere though with unfriendly neighbourhood Bobbies, dolls that are a bit too clingy, armchairs that give you a hug, a phone you can really get tied up on and gift daffs you really shouldn't look in the mouth. Can the grumpy Doctor, scatty Jo, and a Maxi full of UNIT defeat the Master and the Nestene Unconvincingness? And did Jim and Martin find all this plastic fantastic or as flat as Old Ma Farrel's CSO kitchen? Find out here.

The deus ex machina trope has been explored and adapted more times in science fiction media that we could count. When Doctor Who writer Robert Holmes developed the Nestene Consciousness for “Spearhead from Space”, he paired the concept of a non-corporeal sentient being with the god-in-the-machine premise in the form of the Autons, and the Whovian world would never be the same. Not left to rest on his laurels, however, Holmes was by no means finished, and in the next appearance […]

The Autons are back, which means we all finally get what we've been asking for: more stories centering around plastics factories! Eric and Dan have a lengthy conversation about Twin Peaks before jumping into a discussion of the Master, the surprisingly diverse uses for blue screens, and the reinforcing of gender and racial stereotypes. Plus a special guest appearance by Dan's loud dogs! ### Outro Music: "Hanging on the Telephone" -- Blondie
In this installment, Shana and Daniel confront Jo Grant in her first adventure, Terror of the Autons, which has some really horrendous CSO in service of a demonic doll. Also: Mike Yates makes eyes at Jo, The Doctor sort of gets along with the Brig and UNIT, and innovative uses for Bunsen burners are found. Not least, Daniel and Shana coin the term: "Daffodil Bukkake." Oh, and some loser with a funky beard makes his first appearance. Main Topic: Terror of the Autons. Daffod-evils. Demon poo baby. More with working titles. A random Family Feud reference. "The Great Robert Holmes." Just someone to hand you your test tubes. Yates as a Ken doll. The introduction of the Classic Master. Bloodless efficiency. "Fifty Shades of Purple." Bowler-hat Time Lord. Shana's introduction to the Delgado Master. Deconstructing the Master's plan in Autons. Death By Daffodil Bukkake. Moffat's favorite thing. The role of plastic in society. Talking about Demon Poo Baby. The Master's obsession with the Doctor. Shana wants to cosplay Demon Poo Baby. The infamous cocoa scene. The Adventures of HAVOC. The Autons are only in two stories. Re-pilot. "The Master is Always Up to Something Stupid, The Doctor Gets to Be Badass, Unit Does its Action Thing, and Jo Grant Wears a Short Skirt." Petwee's Lisp. Character dynamics. Daniel says "y'know" a bunch. Jo's relationship to the Doctor. The uniqueness of the Pertwee Era. The Doctor/Brig relationship. Comparison to Series 8 and Danny Pink. The Doctor and War. Chaotic Good and Lawful Good. Bureaucracy. The Tissue Compression Eliminator. Adventures in Lab Safety. Lived-in-um-ness. "Doctor Rogers." Rocker Mullet Jo Grant. Airheady Jo Grant. Wrapping Up. Like I said, Jo is definitely not a scientist. This week Kiyan and Dylan being season 8 with Terror of the Autons, featuring the first appearance of The Master! Third Doctor, Brigadier, and JoFinally, The Master is in the house and he's brought his cuddly dolls with him. We also cast judgement on the latest biscuit craze.'The Doctor is still trapped on earth and unable to use the tardis, but the Time Lords are still looking out for him. They send warning that The Master has arrived, and The Doctor soon discovers that the evil Time Lord is working alongside the Nestene and its lethal Autons. Once again, the Earth is in terrible danger. Can The Doctor and his new assistant Jo Grant save it before it's too late and the terror of the Autons is revealed?'Written By: Robert HolmesDirected By: Barry Letts
Michael and Shelby finally get Jeremy to see Jo Grant's very first story. Will he like Jo, and will he enjoy the story. We share our thoughts about Jon Pertwee's fifth story.
A stage hypnotist and a factory worker employ a team of mime artists to run their own radio station whilst taking part in a bus tour for a group of artificial florists with abnormally large heads. Clearly this contravenes all the laws of, erm…sense, so U.N.I.T. is called in to put a stop to it. The Doctor can't take part though because he's confused by a window and challenged some clowns to a fist fight. Not to worry, the clumsy work experience girl has just brought the Brigadier a damp plank of wood, just what he needs to defeat the Sparkly Fingers of Death…
A random selection ℅ The Wheel of Who, The Master's first outing 'Terror of the Autons.' Gin was spilled, and Sen goes off on a bit of diversion, but mostly we stick to the plot.
We return to the Third Doctor's Era after reviewing Doctor Who Series Three (2007) to witness the Master's first story in 'The Terror of the Autons'. Katy Manning makes her first appearance as Jo Grant in this story. Plus, we give our best regards to Alan Siler and the WHOLanta convention team on what may be the final WHOLanta.
