Welcome back to Nerd Legion's 1980s Fantasy Marathon! This week we tackle one of the most infamous sword-and-sorcery B-movies ever made: Deathstalker (1983). Produced by Roger Corman and loaded with bizarre editing, random plot “twists,” and way too much sleazy exploitation, Deathstalker has gone down in history as one of the strangest and most uncomfortable entries in '80s fantasy cinema. In this episode we break down:⚔️ Why Deathstalker feels more like softcore than sword-and-sorcery⚔️ The nonsensical “plot” and awkward tournament arc⚔️ Garbage Yoda, the magical trans operation, and our favorite bad effects⚔️ How this film made money — and why people kept watching Is Deathstalker the worst fantasy movie of the 1980s, or just so-bad-it's-good cult cinema? Join us for our breakdown, commentary, and plenty of laughs as we continue our marathon through the weirdest corners of '80s fantasy.
This next movie pick comes from VHS Strikes Back Patreon Matt Bates, and he's chosen a gritty, bloody, and proudly British cult favourite: Dog Soldiers (2002). Directed by Neil Marshall in his feature debut, this film has become a fan-favourite among horror and action enthusiasts alike, thanks to its blend of pitch-black humour, practical effects, and relentless werewolf mayhem. It's a howling good time—and an ambitious low-budget thriller that punches well above its weight.Shot on a modest budget of around £2 million, Dog Soldiers was filmed almost entirely in Luxembourg, standing in for the Scottish Highlands. Neil Marshall, previously known for his editing work, wrote the script and directed the film with a scrappy indie spirit. The movie faced its share of production hurdles—tight schedules, unpredictable weather, and the ever-present challenge of doing creature effects on a budget. Instead of CGI, Marshall opted for practical werewolf suits, a choice that helped cement the film's cult status. Despite limited theatrical release, it became a sleeper hit on home video and has since earned a reputation as one of the best werewolf films of the modern era, launching Marshall's directing career and paving the way for his later hits like The Descent and Doomsday.Check out Matt's YouTube channel here. But when night falls, the hunt begins. Now, cut off from command, outgunned, and outnumbered, a ragtag squad must face a nightmare that doesn't sleep, doesn't reason… and definitely doesn't bleed. From the director of The Descent comes a relentless, blood-soaked battle for survival. This time, the enemy isn't human… it's hungry. Dog Soldiers - lock, load, and pray for daylight.Fun FactsNo CGI Werewolves – The film proudly used practical effects and full-body creature suits instead of CGI, giving the werewolves a more physical and grounded presence.Filmed in Luxembourg – Although set in the Scottish Highlands, the movie was shot in Luxembourg due to funding and tax incentive reasons.Delayed U.S. Release - Although released in the UK in 2002, Dog Soldiers didn't hit U.S. theaters or DVD shelves until 2005, building anticipation through word-of-mouth.Cult Status – The film was a festival favourite, winning the Audience Award at the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film.Practical Explosions – All explosions and gunfire effects were done live on set, giving the action scenes a visceral, old-school war movie feel.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

This goes as well as you expect it to...We're talking F1, training dragons, Vanessa Kirby, Ballerina and coin the term "New Dadcore" and Vanessa Kirby again. All music by the FFL team...
In this short solo episode- recorded a few days after the passing of Val Kilmer- I talked about the Ron Howard fantasy film, 'Willow'. A film which- I'll be honest- I'm quite critical of, epecially when comparing this to The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars (but don't worry, I have nothing but praise for this film's leads of Warwick Davis, Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer, who all deliver top-tier work).
This week I'm delighted to be joined by Em, host of film history podcast Verbal Diorama, for a conversation on the (David Bowie-starring!!!) fantasy classic, 'Labyrinth'. And we have much to discuss...

We kick off our review of every 1980s sword and sorcery movie, with Hawk the Slayer, a cult-classic British fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel from 1980. With charmingly terrible dialogue and special effects, this movie provides an unabashed good time with cheesy and tropey moments. Clearly inspired and derivative of Star Wars and pulp fantasy of the era, Hawk the Slayer still provides some unique moments and solid pacing. While no masterpiece, viewers should still find this film to be an incredibly fun viewing experience filled with lords of the dance, fully automatic crossbows, and glowing bouncy ball magic. Throughout the season on Thursdays, Harmon and Tice will mege trending fantasy topics with hard hitting analysis from their film study. All of this is an effort to make you a smarter and better fantasy manager. For the first episode, Harmon discusses the growing trend of NFL offenses using heavier formations with more TEs and less WRs. Tice explains why this is a reaction to the way defenses have shifted over the years. Both believe this shift could help raise the floor of TEs in fantasy and maximize target opportunities for top end WRs.In the second segment, Tice shares what he's nerding out about heading into Week 1 and dissects two run games that are not being talked about enough. It's #ScottSeptember baby as this episode (which Paul, Kieran and I recorded back in mid-December 2022) kicks off a run of Ridley Scott 1980s episode. Today's film is 'Legend', the director's 1985 fanasy film starring a pre-'Top Gun' Tom Crusie and so you can expect talk of 'Lord of the Rings', Game of Throne, director's cuts of films (a Scott staple), as well as misadventures in laundry. Enjoy!

But ALWAYS grounds for debate and good old fashioned chat. A whole episode's worth, at that! So give yourself over to the casting agents of the Drunkast squadron (this isn't a Drunkast but, ya know) and let them re-envision, in front your eyes, Thundercats, The Breakfast Club and The A-Team. You remind me of the pod…the pod with the geeks. Paul and Arlo fall down the rabbit hole of another Geek Challenge, this time pitting Jim Henson's 1986 cult classic Labyrinth against Jan Švankmajer's 1988 headtrip Alice. Henson's film finds Jennifer Connelly dancing with David Bowie and a variety of Muppets as she attempts to rescue her baby brother, while Švankmajer's finds Kristýna Kohoutová assailed by a variety of bizarre stop-motion creations and a taxidermied rabbit. It should be obvious who picked which movie. Topics of discussion include codpieces, sellouts, practical effects, and weird sex, among others.
