This and many other themes are touched on in the latest episode of Unqualified Observers. Come join Kelham and Thomas in this fun look at the vampire romance from 2013, "Only Lovers Left Alive." See what Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and the late greats Anton Yelchin and John Hurt have to offer in this hauntingly beautiful and deliberately paced film. “I'M NOT AN ANIMAL! I'M A HUMAN BEING!”As you may already know, we lost one of the great ones this year. In honor of David Lynch, we decided to go back to one of the earlier films in his career, The Elephant Man from 1980, starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, a critical and commercial success in what would have been David Lynch's second film and put a lot of eyes on his future, incredibly influential body of work. However, despite Lynch being Austin's favorite director of all time, he has never seen The Elephant Man! Well, on this episode, we fix that. The Elephant Man is not known to be an incredibly surreal film, but we discuss the various similarities and signature iconography Lynch can't help but include in all his films, including The Elephant Man. We talk about the use of dreams, the use of sound, and how his sense of humor shines through in a film that more linear than his other body of work.We also talk about how the film approaches the topic of how society treats an outcast with a deformity/disability. It's not uncommon for the Academy to pay attention to this genre of film, but something about The Elephant Man is very different. What might be contrived and cliche in other films feels deeply moving in this one. How does The Elephant Man stand out and distinguish itself from “Oscar bait“ films? We also talk about the way the film was made and how the film differs from the reality of life for Joseph Merrick, the real life person who lived with this condition that lead people to refer to him as The Elephant Man. How does David Lynch go from making a surrealist art film, Eraserhead, to a narratively linear biopic that tugs on the heart? How does comedy legend Mel Brooks go from making Blazing Saddles to producing The Elephant Man? How did a babysitter get her boyfriend nominated for an Oscar? How did this movie invent an entirely new category the Academy had to pay attention to? We talk about all of this and more! This episode was very special for us and took a little bit of time to brew. With the changes in technology one would think more films would be more accessible to view at our convenience, but in fact that not the case for some films that are culturally significant like The Elephant Man. As of recording the episode we couldn't find the film digitally streaming/renting anywhere, but with luck we did manage to find the film on DVD at a reasonable price. After watching the film we might actually spring for that premium Criterion Collection version, because this film really is that special. In fact, the late John Hurt said in the making of documentary “If anyone isn't moved by the end of the film, I don't think I'd want that person in my life.“ We hope you enjoy this episode and seek the film out yourself, or hit us up about a potential screening!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

An episode all about cognitive dissonance. Ever feel like there are two yous in the same head? The one that cares about the planet, and the one that doesn't act like it does? And that having two yous makes at least one of your yous freak out? You (and you) are not alone. Welcome to cognitive dissonance. As Walt Whitman wrote: you contain multitudes. It's a feature, not a bug, of being alive. Humans, it turns out, are very good at thinking conflicting things at the same time.  This helps us get through the day, but means we're as likely to run away from scary facts we don't like - eg, the state of planet Earth - as to take meaningful action. It's as bad for our politics as it is for getting our heads around climate change. What's to be done? In this episode, Dave chats all things cognitive dissonance and more with the brilliant Sarah Stein Lubrano. Sarah's an author, podcaster and academic whose work is at the intersection of psychology, politics, and cognitive science. Her new book, Don't Talk About Politics: How to change 21st century minds, is out in mid-May. Let me know your thoughts on the show - hello@yourbrainonclimate.com. Please rate, review and subscribe, and share the show on socials. Please consider chucking this humble indie podcaster a few quid at www.patreon.com/yourbrainonclimate. Owl noises = references: 23:52 - Joseph Henrich coined the term WEIRD & wrote a book about it. 32:30 - Excellent article on Kristin Laurin's work studying bans. 42:44 - Deep organising, via the legend that was Jane McAlevey. 49:29 - Google Deepmind founder Mustafa Suleyman's terrifying book, the Coming Wave. 52:35 - critical theory and social pathology.Clips in this episode are from the (er) 1984 film of 1984, starring Robert Burton and John Hurt. The show is hosted and produced by me, Dave Powell, who you can find @powellds on Bluesky and X/Twitter, although I don't use the latter any more. Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! But of course, with David Lynch telling the story, there is so much more to it than what lies on the surface.

Animated Films from the Edge

Welcome to this week's episode of The Video Store Podcast . This week, I'm focusing on animated movies that lean into darker themes and mature storytelling. These aren't your typical Saturday morning cartoons or Disney films. They're imaginative, ambitious, and not afraid to explore the more complicated corners of life.Let's dive into the four films I'm recommending this week.1. Watership Down (1978)This adaptation of Richard Adams' novel is often remembered for its striking animation and unflinching depiction of survival. On the surface, it's a story about rabbits searching for a safe place to call home, but the film works on deeper levels, touching on themes like leadership, sacrifice, and the brutal realities of nature.Director Martin Rosen made the choice to stay true to the novel's tone, which makes this film stand out from other animated projects of the time. The voice cast is strong, John Hurt as Hazel and Richard Briers as Fiver bring a lot of emotion to their roles. The animation is hand-drawn, with detailed backgrounds that create a world that feels both beautiful and dangerous.2. The Last Unicorn (1982)Based on Peter S. Beagle's novel, The Last Unicorn has a dreamlike quality that sets it apart from other animated films of its time. It tells the story of a unicorn searching for her lost kind, encountering both friends and enemies along the way. While the animation was produced by Rankin/Bass, the actual work was done by a Japanese studio that would later become Studio Ghibli, which might explain the film's unique visual style. This voice cast is great. Mia Farrow voices the Unicorn, Jeff Bridges plays Prince Lir, and Christopher Lee is unforgettable as King Haggard. Lee was reportedly a huge fan of the book and even brought his own copy to recording sessions to ensure his performance stayed faithful to the source material. The soundtrack, provided by the band America, gives the movie a melancholy, almost folk-like feel that complements its tone.3. The Secret of NIMH (1982)Don Bluth made his directorial debut with this adaptation of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. The film tells the story of a widowed field mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who must save her home and sick child with the help of highly intelligent rats. What makes The Secret of NIMH stand out is how dark and detailed it is. Bluth and his team left Disney to make this film because they wanted to push the boundaries of animation, and it shows. The level of detail in the animation is stunning, especially in the rats' lair, which feels alive with glowing lights and intricate designs. The score by Jerry Goldsmith is sweeping and dramatic, which matches the film's high stakes. And while it's technically a kids' movie, it doesn't shy away from mature themes like death, ethics, and the consequences of human interference with nature.4. Heavy Metal (1981)If you're into sci-fi, fantasy, or anthology storytelling, Heavy Metal is one to check out. It's based on the magazine of the same name and features multiple stories connected by a mysterious glowing orb called the Loc-Nar. The animation is bold, with an unapologetically adult tone. Even though I saw it as a kid, I think this one is definitely not for kids. What's interesting about Heavy Metal is how it pulls from different art styles, with each segment feeling distinct. The soundtrack is packed with rock and heavy metal tracks from bands like DEVO, Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Journey, giving it a unique energy. Each of these films pushes the boundaries of what animated storytelling can do, whether through their themes, visual style, or just their ambition. They're all worth watching if you're looking for something that goes beyond the typical animated fare. That's it for this week's episode of The Video Store Podcast. Thanks for listening, and let me know what you think of these recommendations. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Voila!Erin and Brennan violently clash with this week's vexing political tragedy and turn to a vaudevillian veteran in a Guy Fox mask for solutions for voracity. Blood, bombs, and Shakespeare with a verbose soundtrack to boot! We have John Hurt, Stephen Fry, Natalie Portman, Stephen Rea, and Hugo Weaving all being the epic actors that they are in this 1984 inspired story of "V" vanquishing virulent vermin. Our only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

We've crawled out of Halloween Humpfest but the creeping dread continues for just a little bit longer because it's time for another discussion in our overarching director topic for 2024. Yes, it is still a “dreary Year of von Trier” and what shit-hole year it's been. Heading down the final stretch, it's safe to say that the overall feeling of dread may bleed into the following year but we will be done with Lars von Trier, at least, until he gets around to making the third of his USA-Land of Opportunity trilogy. Today, we discuss the first of that trilogy and our introduction to Grace Mulligan in von Trier's twisted take on American Folklore with his 2003 film “DOGVILLE” and it has a hell of cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Stellan Skarsgård, Cloe Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall, James Caan and that's only half of them. John Hurt narrates a tale of Grace who is on the run from mobsters and cops. She stumbles upon a strange tiny town. The town is skeptical but they give her a chance to be part of the village if she proves herself helpful by doing labor for each member of the town. When the heat turns up and questions continue they may need a little bit more from Grace to justify her presence. Then a little more. Just a little more. If this all becomes too much can Grace escape? We see the clues along the way (dude is reading “Tom Sawyer”) but when it's all said and done, can glowing optimism make space for a sense of justice? All this within a minimal set design in which walls only exist within the minds of the characters. You know who made this movie so you should have specific expectations. That's right. Call the in-laws. It's movie night. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1979 protopunk science-fiction horror masterpiece, Alien – directed by Ridley Scott; written by Dan O'Bannon; story by Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett; starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.Alien is the ultimate sci-fi horror mashup that revolutionized the two genres and created a pop-culture sensation. It has all the thematic elements of cyberpunk – MUTHER, the AI-computer that controls the ship and only parcels out information on the need-to-know basis to the expendable crew; ASH, the evil android that is jeopardizing the safety of the crew because he's following orders from the Company – WEYLAND-YUTANI, the evil multi-national corporation that wants the xenomorph for their bio-weapons division – to the design of the bio-mechanical planetoid that pulses with xenomorphic dread. If cosmic horror is defined as “the terror of the unknowable and incomprehensible”, then ALIEN fits it like a glove. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! Forever the creative soul, Michael Hutchence was born to be more than just a lead singer of an international rock band. From the early days, Michael embraced the theatrical possibilities of music video and was at the forefront in ensuring INXS songs captured a visual vibrancy and vitality. As such, in today's episode we dive deep into the critical performances that shaped and piqued Michael's acting urges commencing in 1982 when Michael joined forces with iconic Cold Chisel songwriter, Don Walker in contributing to the seminal 1982 Australian film Freedom with two tracks and one video, notably Speed Kills that showcases a 21 year old Michael. The next 4 years were committed to INXS' global ascent via albums Shabooh Shabaah, The Swing and Listen Like Thieves, plus the relentless touring attached to these triumvirate recordings. So, it took till 1986 for Michael to clear his schedule when the opportunity came up to star in Richard Lowenstein's Dogs in Space came up. A movie that embraced the punk leanings of shared living suburbia amidst musical graft, this iconic art house movie has endured and influenced generations of fans and filmmakers over 38 years, despite its middling box office performance at the time. Fast forward 4 years later post the juggernaut albums and tours that were Kick and X, Michael scratched a lifelong itch portraying famed British poet Percy Shelly, by joining Bridget Fonda, John Hurt, Jason Patric and Raul Julia in legendary Hollywood Director Roger Corman's last ever picture “Frankenstein Unbound”. A true passion piece and one that Michael embraced with unyielding commitment and joy. Finally, Michael portrayed a Record Executive mogul in the underwhelming indie feature “Limp” that despite its problems, aroused the attention of both Michael Douglas' and Quentin Tarantino's production companies with speculation of future projects in the offing. Unfortunately, Michael's untimely passing thwarted what may have led a promising acting career into a burgeoning one. What is known, Michael possessed a charisma, a stare and a glare amidst an inner drive and creativity to succeed and express. One can only imagine what more he could have achieved in this space.
