Angela welcomes Patrick Holford who's discussing the importance of nourishing and protecting the brain for optimal health and performance. He delves into the intricate workings of the brain, emphasising the significance of omega-3 DHA, phospholipids, and B vitamins in maintaining brain health. He also highlights the role of homocysteine as a biomarker for various diseases, the impact of B vitamins on methylation, and why he believes the onset of Alzheimers may be something that we can do something about KEY TAKEAWAYS The brain is over 60% fat, with omega-3 DHA being a key component that attaches to phospholipids, essential for brain function and structure. Elevated homocysteine levels are linked to a range of conditions, including neurological disorders, heart disease, and cancer, making it a vital marker to monitor for overall health. B vitamins play a crucial role in the methylation process, which is necessary for incorporating omega-3 into the brain. Proper methylation is vital for cognitive function and overall brain health. Understanding how to change behaviours related to diet, lifestyle, and supplementation is crucial for preventing cognitive decline and reducing the risk of various diseases. BEST MOMENTS "Your brain currently has to be underperforming because you didn't know what it was that you need to optimally nourish your brain." "The recommendation for children is to eat fish twice a week. Less than 5% of children achieve even that." "I can't believe it's ignored. It's never on like a standard doctors or even like a pupil health check." "The single hardest bit is not finding out what is the problem, which we, of course, will do." In this episode, Rob Calder talks to Drs Caroline Copeland, Patrick Courtney and Paul Royall about their recent article assessing the time it would take for drones to deliver naloxone to people who are overdosing on opioids. The study team used NPSAD (National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths) data to map out overdoses in Teeside over recent years and then to predict how long it would have taken a drone to make the journey and deliver naloxone to a bystander who would then be able to administer it. They then compared this time with the time it takes ambulances to attend the scene. Along the way they discuss take off stations, weather, traffic congestion, no-fly zones and the importance of considering whether a drone will be destroyed along the way."The initial design we came up with was a sort of cargo transport box on top of the drone, whereby the drone lands and then the bystander can remove the naloxone home kit or naloxone nasal spray from the top of that transport holder. At that point we then follow the guidance and recommendations of the at home naloxone or nasal spray." - Paul RoyallOriginal article: An evaluation of naloxone transit for opioid overdose using drones: A case study using real-world coroner data. In this episode, Jay takes us down to Deadside, walks us through the Marrow Gates, and introduces us to Legion and his group of nasties. This episode is Jay's attempt at a Retro Wildlands-like monologue about the deeply atmospheric, and incredibly dark Shadow Man from 1998.Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those.Content WarningThis episode is a Retro Wildlands-like exploration of one of my favourite, extremely dark games. This episode contains some pretty grisly descriptions of some of the darkest areas of the game. This means that the episode is not for the ears of the innocent or those triggered by descriptions of horror and gore.As such, please listen responsibly.---From active timer battling to zombie slaying, Waffling Taylors covers video games and beyond. And this episode will see us going quite far into the beyond - the great beyond, that is.This episode of the Waffling Taylors was inspired by the Retro Wildlands podcast. I'm a big fan of Nomad's show, and think that you would be too - so go give it a listen (there's a link in the show notes). And if you haven't heard it yet, we had him on the show not too long back - here's a link to that. This episode is going to be another monologue from me (Jay), but don't worry, Squidge is still very much here. In fact, he edited this episode (as he does with every episode) and I can prove it:HONK!- SquidgeSo why is it just me this week? Firstly, Squidge is down with illness, but he'll be back very soon. I've also been wanting to tackle one of my favourite games in long form for a long time, and that game is Shadow Man. I discovered the Retro Wildlands podcast shortly after Nomad had released episode three (which was about Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past) and loved it from the off.I decided that Nomad's format would fit a monologue about Shadow Man perfectly, but I've no idea whether he will be interested in covering this game so I thought I would do it myself - Nomad, I'm more than happy for you to do a way better job that I have on this game.I actually love Shadow Man so much that I that I've written about it twice for our blog (and there will be links in the show notes): https://wafflingtaylors.rocks/2017/07/08/shadow-man-part-1-welcome-to-deadside/ https://wafflingtaylors.rocks/2017/07/22/shadow-man-part-2-keep-your-hair-on-michael/ But before we get started with the episode proper, I want to issue a warning: Because we're going to touch on some of the content in one of the darkest video games I've ever played, I ask that you please consider skipping this episode if you are easily offended, can be triggered by descriptions of violence or horror, or are listening with those who have innocent ears.I'm not going to cover some of the worst parts of the game's themes and story in this episode, but we'll certainly be dancing around them a little. If you choose to continue onward, I'll have Squidge put this sound: ALERT! before and after any of the particularly grisly descriptions that I've decided to include in this monologue. I'll also warn you in advance and aim to give a "skip ahead x seconds to get around this bit" style of warning.I ask that you please listen to this episode responsibly. Background InfoSo what is Shadow Man?Aside from the spooky meme of a shadowy person who haunts people's sleep, near-sleep, and hallucinations, it is also a game which came out in 1998 - originally for the N64. It was then ported to the PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast (in that order) in 1999; making it a game for both the 5th and 6th generations of video game consoles. It was developed by Acclaim Studios Teeside, a UK-based arm of Acclaim based in Teeside (in the North of England), and is based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name. One thing to note is that the character of Shadow Man in the game is very different to the original Valiant Comics) run of the character. However, after the game came out, Acclaim bought Valiant Comics and started putting out stories based on the video game version of the Shadow Man character.I'm greatly reducing the history and importance of the original Shadow Man character here so definitely go read up on him after listening to this episode. If it was ported to three different formats back in the day, then which was the best one? It's my opinion that the Dreamcast version is the best. Mostly because it was the most powerful home console that the game was ported to. Because it was the last of the ports, the developers could put the most effort into the audio-visual quality of the game - combining the massive areas of the N64 version, and the high-quality skins and music from the PC version. However, because it was originally an N64 game which was ported to the Dreamcast, the controls are really quite bad - but we'll talk about that in a moment. When Acclaim went belly up in 2004, the rights to the game were left in a sort of limbo. But in 2013, Nightdive announced that they had bought the rights and put the PC version up on GoG. This version came with a large number of quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes, and some extras that were never included in the original PC release - this included things like a downloadable version of the soundtrack and a scanned strategy guide.Full Show NotesA full transcript of this "raw with Jay" episode is available over in the full show notes - because there are loads of books you can read, and some web-based resources for you to consume.Let us know on Twitter, Facebook, leave a comment on the show notes or try our brand-new contact page. And have you left us a rating or review? First half of the Twitter Space Phone In after an incredibly disappointing afternoon on Teeside.Caity confirms that we are not Leicester, Uncle Ron locks himself in a toilet before suggesting that Bilic should go, we start to vote what Chinese dishes Greg should have for his takeaway tonight and Jack calls in from the US with some fabulous quotes worthy of Winston Churchill who Jack also suggests we should re-animate as next manager. Neil questions the lack of continuity and the impact that the lack of stability has had, Paul comes in and explains that it can all be summed up in one word – apathy be it with the club, the board and now the manager. Rich comes on and agrees and adds to Paul's comments and both of them take Pete's well intended binary poll and rip up the rules – again! Rich asks what the atmosphere was like in the away end so we end part one taking Mals call live from the A1 and then the A19 (too much detail – possibly) to let us know. We could be heading for a shortage of carbon dioxide.  Yes, you read that right, despite carbon emissions hitting record levels in 2022, CO2 for use in the food and drink industry is in short supply. CO2 is used all across the sector, soft drink production of course, but also meat processing, brewing, baking, and many many others But with the soaring price of natural gas, dwindling supply, and the shutdowns of CO2 plants in Cheshire and Teeside, there are fears that major shortages are just around the corner. We have been here before. Significant CO2 scarcity in 2018 sent shockwaves through the industry. But could we be facing an even worse situation this time around?   Prices of CO2 are already rocketing, so what can the industry do to prepare itself? As part two of our Saturday double bill, our Chris Wynn was joined by Stephen Jackson of Boro Podcast - Tw12th Man - to look ahead to Sunderland's first trip to the Riverside since February 2018, as Middlesbrough legend Tony Mowbray returns to his old stomping grounds with the Red & White army in tow! What's the crack? Been a while hasn't it…How have our southern cousins been the past few years? Have they missed us at all? What are the thoughts on Teeside about Sunderland's recent appointment of Mogga? He's quite well liked down there, so will he get a good reception from the home crowd? Chris has a quick rummage about the history of our regional neighbours, and gets Stephen's thoughts on what exactly these games are; Is it a derby? Do they care? Do we care? Are we both pretending we don't care because we don't know if the other one actually does? How is Chris Wilder managing at the Riverside - are the Boro fans content or are things looking a bit dicey for him currently? What do the lads think would be a fair result, are there any nerves ahead of this one? All this and more! ICYMI: as mentioned above we also have a nice little reaction pod covering SAFC's transfer dealings from our Gav and Craig, which should be sat just behind the pod you're listening to now, if you fancy a bit more Lads chatter before the game! Enjoy your weekend and Ha'way the Lads! #SAFC #EFLChampionship #EFL Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
