Zdravo! Ta teden smo gostje v prvem slovenskem astronomskem podkastu, kjer v 42. epizodi govorimo bolj o Štoparcu kot o astronomiji, čeprav presenetljivo dolgo vztrajamo v vesolju.

Natalie welcomes renowned British writer Simon Brett, known for his mystery and crime thrillers, including the humorous whodunit "Bones Under the Beach Hut." Simon shares insights into his writing process, the inspiration behind his characters, and his own experiences as a beach hut owner in Littlehampton. The conversation explores the quirks of beach hut communities, the challenges of writing, and the joy of creating engaging characters. Simon also discusses his latest book, "A Messy Murder," which explores themes of decluttering and personal struggles. KEY TAKEAWAYS Background of Simon Brett: Simon Brett is a prolific British author known for his mystery and crime thrillers, having published over a hundred books since 1975. He has also written humorous works and was awarded an OBE for his contributions to literature. Inspiration for "Bones Under the Beach Hut": The book was inspired by the beach hut community in Littlehampton, where the author became a beach hut owner after writing the novel. The setting allowed for a humorous exploration of the quirks and dynamics within beach hut associations. Character Development: The characters Carol and Jude in the Feathering series reflect different aspects of the author's personality. Carol is portrayed as self-conscious and anxious, while Jude is more laid-back and adventurous, creating ongoing conflict and depth in their interactions. Writing Process: The author emphasises the psychological challenges of writing, including feelings of self-doubt and the struggle to maintain momentum. He likens the writing process to carpentry or Lego, where structuring the plot is essential before allowing characters to take over. Latest Work - "A Messy Murder": This book features a declutterer as the main character and addresses more serious themes such as mental illness and bereavement. The inspiration came from a real-life declutterer who shared intriguing stories, leading to the creation of a new series. BEST MOMENTS "I thought, oh, that'd be a really good background for... a crime novel about a beach hut." "It sounded like a body in the library or somebody, you know, decluttering and accidentally stumbling upon a body." "I mean, the prices of beach huts are just amazing... If you're shrewd, it's a good way of investing." EPISODE RESOURCES A Messy Murder (The Decluttering mysteries Book 4) - Kindle edition by Brett, Simon. We are very pleased to bring you author Micheal Bradley, as he talks his latest book "Dead Air." Born and raised in southern New Jersey, Michael Bradley spent eight years in radio broadcasting in New Jersey and West Virginia, including the Marconi award winning WVAQ in Morgantown. He has been “up and down the dial,” working as an on air radio personality, promotions director and even program director – all of them jobs that provided a wealth of fond, enduring, and, sometimes, scandalous moments. Some of them make it into his suspense novels. Particularly into his first, the supernatural thriller Sirens in the Night (2015), which was called a “smart, terrifying, heartbreaking” and “compelling read,” and his third, Dead Air (2020), a “phenomenal read” that will “make you look over your shoulder the moment night falls.” Michael's day job as an IT professional has taken him on frequent travels throughout the US and Europe. On his travels he's met many people from diverse backgrounds, and he is grateful to all of them, as many of their quirks and habits also make it into his novels, albeit in clandestine and anonymous ways. ? When he isn't on the road, working, or writing, Michael hits the waterways in his kayak, paddling creeks, streams, and rivers all over Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. Or he reads to get inspired by writers such as P.D. James, Raymond Chandler, Leslies Charteris, Simon Brett, Terry Pratchett, and Ian Fleming. Michael is a member of Pennwriters, Mystery Writers of America, and International Thriller Writers. Inside "DEAD AIR": Three can keep a secret, but only if two are dead. No one knows that better than Kaitlyn Ashe, who has been running from a childhood secret her whole life. Until now. ? Crowned the top rated radio DJ in Philadelphia, she is finally ready to settle down with her lawyer fiancée and a whole new set of friends who know nothing about her past. When she suddenly receives anonymous letters threatening her, she realizes that someone out there knows. But who? Isn't her secret buried with the dead? ? When the threats reveal murderous intent, Kaitlyn has no choice but to trust Detective Rodney Shapiro as her life spirals toward a reunion in the one place she'd hoped to never visit again: The Shallows. ? From the Philadelphia skyline to the rural suburbs of New Jersey, Dead Air weaves a suspenseful tale of past misdeeds and present murderous instincts as Kaitlyn plays a game of cat and mouse with a mysterious killer who stops at nothing to get revenge.
In this episode, the final of series 2, I explore how technology tools can boost your efficiency. I identify five invaluable tools that have helped me be more productive over the past year. The first tool I have discovered is Calendly, a diary management website that helps me to set up meetings with other people seamlessly, ideal for schools. Calendly allows me to set up various types of meeting online that I then send to people via a link that lets them book a meeting directly into my diary. The second tool, Canva, a simple to use graphic design platform, allows me to create engaging social media images, PowerPoint presentations and short brochures. The third tool, SmarterQueue, is a social media scheduler that helps me schedule content on LinkedIn and Twitter, and is particularly good for evergreen content such as promotion for alumni magazine articles that don't date. The fourth tool, Trello, is a project management tool that is incredibly useful for defining workflow. Finally the fifth tool, Bonjoro, is a platform that allows me to send video messages. This is an effective way of relaying information to people without text-heavy emails, ideal for keeping in touch with with major gift prospects between meetings.I close the episode by briefly covering tools that help with the creation of this podcast including Zencastr, Descript and Buzzsprout.Episode HighlightsIntroducing the need for efficiency tools (01:57)Efficiency tool 1: Calendly (03:35)Efficiency tool 2: Canva (05:40)Efficiency tool 3: SmarterQueue (06:46)Efficiency tool 4: Trello (08:37)Efficiency tool 5: Bonjoro (10:05)References and resourcesTool 1: Calendly: www.calendly.com Tool 2: Canva: www.canva.com Tool 3: SmarterQueue: www.smarterqueue.com Tool 4: Trello: www.trello.com Tool 5: Bonjoro: www.bonjoro.comBonus podcast tools: Zencastr: www.zencastr.com Descript: www.descript.com Buzzsprout: www.buzzsprout.com With thanks to Simon Brett and Matt Barber for their invaluable in help bringing Series 2 of The Independent School Podcast to you.Explore the rest of Series 2: www.consultjuliet.co.uk/podcast Sign up to Juliet Corbett's newsletter at www.consultjuliet.co.uk/signup to find out about upcoming School Fundraising Q&A sessionsFind out more about Juliet Corbett's work and discover a host of free resources at www.consultjuliet.co.ukThank you so much for listening to The Independent School Podcast.
