“I wish there was a culture of thinking about preconception before you're ready to start.” - Emily MarsonToo often, fertility conversations don't start until someone is already struggling to conceive. Unfortunately, by that time, many of our patients are already carrying years of stress, inflammation, disrupted sleep, nutrient depletion, hormone dysregulation, chronic pain, metabolic issues, and the wear and tear of pushing hard for a very long time. That moment of recognition can make the process become intensely stressful almost immediately.To offer our patients the best possible outcome, we have to reframe fertility as a process of creating the healthiest possible environment for conception and pregnancy, not a switch we can flip the moment we want to conceive. Especially for women navigating endometriosis, PCOS, recurrent pregnancy loss, IVF, or perimenopausal fertility, there's often a deep sense of urgency and pressure around fixing the problem. But properly supporting fertility requires slowing down enough to look at how all our body's systems interact over time. And while IVF can absolutely be an important and necessary tool, there's often a huge opportunity to better support the body before and during that process instead of only focusing on stimulation protocols and lab numbers.In this episode, I'm joined by Emily Marson, licensed acupuncturist and founder of Aphrodite Fertility Acupuncture in San Diego, for a conversation about integrative fertility care and how acupuncture can support both natural conception and IVF outcomes. Episode 88: Una Marson In this episode, we meet Una Marson, a Jamaican writer, journalist, and radio producer, who shared her talents and voice in poetry, plays, and on the BBC, after her ambition took her to London in the 1930s. She described as the first Black feminist to speak out against racism and sexism in Britain. We know little about her life post-1945, when she returned to Jamaica and continued writing poetry and fighting discrimination – but a recent rediscovery in the UK has led to a TV documentary and a library named in her honor. She became the first Black producer at the BBC with her show Calling the West Indies, which connected West Indian migrants with family and loved ones during the turbulent wartime years. To mark the 90th anniversary of the BBC World Service, we trace the development of the Caribbean Service. Its beginnings go back to the early 1940s when the BBC's first black producer, Una Marson was employed. She created Caribbean Voices, which gave future Nobel laureates such as Derek Walcott their first international platform. In 1969, one of the UK's best known newsreaders, Sir Trevor McDonald, left Trinidad to join the BBC Caribbean Service as a producer. He reflects on its legacy. When his six-year-old daughter was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Tom Whitehead was determined to do whatever it took to save her life. In 2012, Emily Whitehead became the first patient enrolled in a clinical trial of a new immunotherapy treatment known as CAR T, which would ultimately turn her immune system into a powerful weapon against cancer. A decade later, this cancer treatment is now widely used and has gone on to save hundreds of lives. Dr, Marson is a Professor at UCSF and the Director of the Gladstone-UCSF Institute of Genomic Immunology. His lab focuses on adapting CRISPR genome editing techniques to human immune cells in order to understand the genetic programs controlling immune cell function and to manipulate T cells to generate cell-based therapies for a wide range of diseases, including cancer.
