Earlier this year, Love Jones returned with the album, The Greatest Show on Earth, their first album since 2010, and Ben Daughtrey, Barry Thomas, and Jonathan Palmer discuss their journey to releasing the new album with Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak on Soundtrack Your Life. They also talk about their start as a band in 1990 and how they ended up in LA, where they would meeting the likes of director John Favreau and actor Vince Vaughn. Favreau and Vaughn who were making an indie-film called Swingers. The band contributed their song "Paid for Lovin'" to the soundtrack but the band was involved with more than just that song. Bassist Barry Thomas was a music consultant on the film, helping pick out songs for the soundtrack, and the band almost ended up in the film itself, since Favreau and Vaughn were such big fans of the band. Ben, Barry, and John share behind the scenes stories about Swingers, they also chat about jamming with producer/composer Jon Brion in the early 90s, and appearing in films like Since You've Been Gone and The Sweetest Thing. The Story That Beats Coronation Street (But Divides the Hosts) Stephen Wyatt returns after Paradise Towers to deliver a circus-themed finale to Season 25. Expanded from three parts to four at John Nathan Turner's request, this story follows the Doctor and Ace arriving at the psychic circus on the planet Seganax—except Ace hates circuses, and the Doctor seems unusually fascinated by performance, danger, and magic. It wins over behind-the-sofa panelists and pulls the highest ratings of McCoy's entire run (beating Coronation Street for the first time), yet one host finds it compelling while the other considers it nearly unwatchable. What makes the difference? Production Under Impossible Circumstances The asbestos discovery that plagued Silver Nemesis forced this finale into a makeshift tent rigged in the parking lot. The budget is visibly exhausted by this point, yet the production team managed to secure Jeffrey Durham (The Great Soprendo) as the first magic consultant since 1977 to coach McCoy in juggling. The explosion sequence near McCoy was supposed to be blown air with added effects—until last-minute testing showed it looked unconvincing, so they switched to live pyrotechnics without telling the lead actor. He didn't blink on set because he believed there wouldn't be a retake. The Doctor's Behavior: A Fundamental Divide One host sees a character temporarily set aside his usual competence for story purposes. The other sees the Doctor acting like a completely different person—gullible, clumsy, silly, and uncharacteristically unable to read situations. The proactive crime-fighter from Remembrance and The Happiness Patrol has vanished, replaced by someone who falls into obvious traps and does pratfalls. McCoy's physical comedy training makes the juggling work, but does the writing serve the character he's been becoming over the last three stories? The Satire Cuts Both Ways Whiz Kid represents fandom—earnest, excited, devoted to the circus's history. His reward is a cruel, unnecessary death played as harsh comedy. What's the point of making fun of fans, especially when the message seems to be that fans should be punished for their devotion? Meanwhile, the real family in the audience—who turn out to be the Gods of Ragnarok—are abstract divine beings demanding entertainment. Who is the story really criticizing? A Pantheon Problem The Gods of Ragnarok are named after Norse mythology's apocalypse, yet they look almost Egyptian with their eye-based design. They get referenced later in New Who (specifically with the Fifteenth Doctor), which raises the question: did this story earn that future callback, or does the massive concept introduced in Part Four feel tacked on? What does naming them after Ragnarok actually accomplish? Character Choices Captain Cook is largely despised—a manipulative bore whose presence never makes sense. Mags is the victim of a rushed werewolf transformation that doesn't commit to either wolf or cat form. Kingpin is confusingly established as the former circus leader, but the revelation lands without impact. Bellboy's name suggests something, but what? The food cart lady exists to expose hippies. Meanwhile, the Chief Clown—sinister, physically controlled, genuinely threatening—stands out as the most interesting antagonist, but even he doesn't quite fit the larger story. Does a Four-Part Circus Need to Be This Long? The production feels stretched, relying on repetitive moments (running through quarries, hiding in tents, escaping robots) that feel interchangeable by Part Three. Could this have been told in three parts? Would removing redundant sequences have tightened the narrative? Does the extended runtime serve the story, or does it expose the thinness of the plot? Production Highlights: Music: First original song for Doctor Who since The Gunfighters (1966). Performed by Rico Ross, who played Private Frost in Aliens. Magic Consultant: Jeffrey Durham (The Great Soprendo)—first since Talons of Weng Chiang (1977) Guest Star: Jessica Martin (Mags) returns to the role in Big Finish and will later play Queen Elizabeth in Voyage of the Damned Ratings: 5.0–5.3–4.8–6.6 (the finale pulls the highest numbers of McCoy's entire run) Coming Up Next: Friday (Patreon): Doctor Who: The Ultimate Adventure (1989 stage production with John Pertwee—the clearest footage available on YouTube). Following Wednesday (Main Feed): Colin Baker retrospective (hiatus episode). Dwight Stones is on the cover of the June 14, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated, and he joins Past Our Prime to take us back to one of the most electric moments of his remarkable career. That cover came on the heels of a world record in the high jump — a performance that announced to the world that Stones wasn't just a great athlete, he was an event. Being on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1976 wasn't just an honor, it was a cultural moment. In an era before social media, before highlight reels and YouTube, that cover was how America met its sports heroes, and Stones understood exactly what it meant. He had arrived — not just as a world-class jumper, but as a personality, a presence, and a star. What made Stones different from every other high jumper of his era was that he understood something most track and field athletes never figured out — the competition didn't start when the bar went up, it started the moment he walked into the stadium. He studied Muhammad Ali the way a film student studies Scorsese, borrowing Ali's gift for psychological warfare and applying it to the high jump pit. He talked, he taunted, he performed, and he made sure that every opponent in the building knew he was there and that beating him was going to cost them something mentally before it cost them anything physically. He even pioneered a new kind of dual role in the sport, competing in a meet and simultaneously serving as an analyst — giving new meaning to the idea of a dual meet and blurring the line between athlete and broadcaster in a way nobody had ever done before. Stones first discovered the Fosbury Flop as a young athlete and never looked back, and the man who invented it — Dick Fosbury — became not just a technical influence but a mentor and a genuine friend. Fosbury changed the sport forever when he went over the bar backwards at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and Stones was among the first generation to fully embrace and master the technique. He'll tell us what it meant to have Fosbury in his corner and how a revolutionary way of clearing a bar became the foundation of everything Stones built his career on. It was more than a technique — it was a philosophy about seeing the world differently than everyone else, which suited Dwight Stones just fine. Then there are the two bronze medals — separated by four years and a lifetime of emotion. The first, at the 1972 Munich Olympics, was a stunning achievement for the youngest member of the American team, a teenager who had no business being on that podium and got there anyway through sheer talent and nerve. The second, at the 1976 Montreal Games, is a different story entirely — one that still irks him to this day. Stones joins Scott, Marc, and Bill on Past Our Prime to talk about both medals, the world record, the showmanship, the mind games, and what it felt like to be young, fearless, and on top of the world in the summer of 1976 — with his face on the cover of the greatest sports magazine that ever existed to prove it. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. [Special Release: This episode is being released simultaneously on the main feed and Patreon for immediacy.] BREAKING NEWS: The Future of Doctor Who Takes a Dramatic Turn Just hours before recording, the BBC made a major announcement that affects Doctor Who's direction for years to come. RTD and Bad Wolf are parting ways with the BBC. The Christmas special is canceled. New production arrangements are being sought. John and Jim process what this means for fandom, for the show's creative identity, and for the possibility of a true fresh start. One host sees this as inevitable reckoning; the other worries about what gets lost in transition. Both discuss how long the darkness might last—and whether that's actually a bad thing. Season 25: Taking Stock of Four Stories After racing through Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis, Happiness Patrol, and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Jim and John pause to rank what they've just watched. Best episode? That's clear. Worst episode? They disagree—and don't let ratings alone settle it. Best villain, best companion, best guest star, best monster, funniest moment, best overall moment—each category sparks different reactions. What makes a story work, even when individual elements fail? When does spectacle overwhelm character? Why does one host adore a story the other found painful? Nemesis of the Daleks: The First Dalek Comic in Ages A four-part comic strip featuring the Doctor's oldest enemies—and a character that may or may not have survived. The art improves significantly from recent strips. The scope feels genuinely cinematic with the Dalek Death Wheel. But here's the question: did the ending rush a story that deserved more room to breathe? John appreciates the scale; Jim wishes the narrative had time to match it. Both wonder if this Dalek adversary will return. Music & Memory TARDIS "The Psychic Circus" by Christopher Guard (who played Bellboy) is a curiosity—an actual song written specifically about an episode, not the show itself. Peter Davison's final story, "The Caves of Androzani," offers stunning supporting characters and a presidency subplot that overshadows the main narrative. One host loves it unreservedly; the other would only revisit select scenes. What Doctor Who Needs Now With RTD out and the show facing a complete reset, Jim and John discuss what a new showrunner should do. Forget continuity complications? Embrace them? How long should the silence last? Should the next Doctor arrive on screen with no explanation, like Eccleston did? Can a complete reboot work? Should there even be a TARDIS anymore? These aren't answered so much as explored—and the conversation suggests the wilderness years ahead might be exactly what the franchise needs. It's the 25th anniversary of Doctor Who, and for the occasion the BBC has assembled Nazis, Cybermen, time-traveling aristocrats, and a mysterious statue made of something that shouldn't exist. Add a comet, multiple centuries, and the Doctor's increasingly cryptic hints about his own past, and you've got an episode that John and Jim can't quite agree on. Production Under Pressure John Nathan Turner wanted this as the season opener for maximum impact, but the Summer Olympics threw everything into chaos. More trouble: they found asbestos in the studio. No interior TARDIS scenes meant everything had to go on location—Windsor Castle (well, a substitute), 17th-century England, and actual museums. The budget request for a proper 25th-anniversary celebration? Denied by BBC One's controller, who wasn't even a fan of the show. Tensions on set ran high, mirroring Colin Baker's era. The Idea That Started It All Kevin Clark walked into pitch meetings with no idea what to pitch. Sat down with JNT and Andrew Cartmell, and when asked what he had, he said: "Doctor Who is God." (They asked him to leave God out of it.) His concept became a story about a cosmic object, living space metal, and something called Validium. The Cybermen? Added last-minute by JNT as a twist to make it the anniversary story. Guest Stars and Hidden Layers Fiona Walker returns nearly 25 years after "The Keys of Marinus." Leslie French, who once auditioned to play the First Doctor, appears as a mathematician. Anton Differing took the Nazi role mainly to catch Wimbledon on London television. A celebrated jazz musician leads the band and gets screen time. The behind-the-sofa consensus: this beats Happiness Patrol. The Cybermen get one final classic appearance before the costumes literally fall apart (they were taped together and spray-painted silver). Where the Story Divides One host sees excellent location work, great chemistry between the leads, well-choreographed action, and "good bonkers" energy. The other finds forced humor, a clumsy attempt to deepen the Doctor's mystery, misogynistic moments, and stereotypical American characters that undermine the tone. The final scene—with Ace asking a question and the Doctor refusing to answer—creates genuine friction neither host expected. An Anniversary That Isn't Quite One For a 25th-anniversary episode, it's surprisingly light on callbacks. The real tribute to Doctor Who's past is the Cybermen themselves—silver, returning, and defeated in ways that feel... almost accidental? Multiple plot threads intersect (the Nazis, the magical artifact, the time-jumping aristocrat, the alien invaders), and whether they mesh or clash depends entirely on your tolerance for chaotic storytelling. Coming Up Next: Monday (Patreon Early): Patreon Exclusive 174 with music, Memory TARDIS, and three-part comic "Invaders from Gantac" by Alan Grant. Following Wednesday (Main Feed): Season 25 finale with "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy" (four parts). John promises it's "right up his alley." On this loaded episode of Champs Corner, Shelton and Steven Harris welcome Florida Gators legend and Super Bowl champion Kevin Carter for an unforgettable conversation packed with football stories, leadership lessons and pure Gator gold. Kevin takes fans inside the glory days of 90s Florida football under Steve Spurrier, sharing incredible stories about the culture, toughness and championship mindset that built the Gators into a powerhouse. From wild stories about legendary strength coach Rich Tuten to what made those teams special, Carter paints a vivid picture of an era every Gator fan reveres. The conversation dives into his remarkable NFL career, including stories from “The Greatest Show on Turf,” playing alongside Marshall Faulk, sacking legends like Brett Favre and Troy Aikman, and what it took to win a Super Bowl. Carter also shares powerful behind-the-scenes lessons from Hall of Famers, life after football, and a message every young athlete needs to hear about making memories and maximizing moments. The show wraps with Kevin giving his thoughts on the current state of Florida football, why he believes the Gators are building toward something special, and why the standard of greatness still matters in Gainesville. Championship stories. Gator nostalgia. NFL legends. Life lessons. This one was special. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Come one, come all to the Psychic Circus — where the audience kills, the clowns are robots, and the Doctor may be only one striped scarf away from becoming one himself. This week, Pull To Open tackles The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, a late-McCoy oddity that somehow manages to be creepy, funny, ambitious, and weirdly relevant all at once. Is the Chief Clown an all-time villain? Are the Gods of Ragnarok a brilliant meta-commentary or a giant last-minute shrug? And most importantly: is the Doctor, in fact, a hippie? Earlier this week, Pennsylvania’s resident rodent Punxatawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. According to my calendar, we were already slated for six more weeks of winter prior to the official arrival of spring! For sports fans, there are just a few days left until the end of traditional football season. We’ll discuss the big game coming up on Sunday in just a bit. Pro football (like the other major sports) has slowly stretched-out its regular season. The NFL went from 14 games to 16 back in 1978. A 17th regular season game became a reality after the franchise owners wisely trimmed the pre-season from a ludicrously long four games down to three in 2021. It isn’t a secret that the NFL owners now want to expand to an 18th regular season game in a few years. They are reportedly offering to cut the preseason from three meaningless games to two. However, the NFL has telegraphed a desire to have each of the league’s 32 teams play one international game per year after expanding to 18 games. The NFL doesn’t do anything without a keen eye on profits. They have calculated the value of international television rights and global merchandising. It apparently makes financial sense. On Thursday, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees named to the NFL Hall-of-Fame! Saints fans are rejoicing today knowing that the greatest player in franchise history was voted into the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame Thursday in his first year of eligibility. Drew Brees received only two major college scholarship offers coming out of high school in Austin, Texas. After three terrific seasons as the starting quarterback at Purdue, Brees also excelled in the classroom by earning a degree in Industrial Management. It’s hard to believe that the (cough) 6′ Drew Brees was not a first round NFL selection in 2001. He was drafted on the first pick of the second round by the San Diego Chargers. Did you know that Drew Brees spent his first five NFL seasons playing for the Chargers? Fortunately for New Orleans Saints fans, Drew Brees was acquired by Louisiana’s Black and Gold team in 2006. His arrival in the Crescent City coincided with the hiring of offensive-minded first-year head coach Sean Payton. The Saints’ new dynamic duo provided a much-needed shot of optimism into the region following the devastation caused by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints eventually won the Saints’ first and only Super Bowl title on February 7, 2010 with a 31-17 win over Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts. Has it really been 16 years since that game was played? Brees and the Saints should have earned a second Super Bowl appearance at the end of the 2018 season. The NFC Championship game played in New Orleans featured the all-time worst “non-call” by NFL referees on a quite obvious pass interference penalty late in overtime. The visiting Los Angeles Rams won 26-23 but lost to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots two weeks later in the NFL title game. After a 21-year NFL career, Drew Brees retired at the end of the 2020 season. The Saints legend set numerous NFL passing records including his incredible 54-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass. Drew Brees was an intense leader on the football field, an inspiring community leader off the field and is a proud father of four children. He has invested in several business ventures following his retirement from pro football. Brees also returned to television in 2025 to cover regional NFL games for FOX Sports. Only 1.5% of NFL players will ever be inducted into the Hall-of-Fame. Drew Brees deserved this honor and was voted-in during his first year of eligibility! Why is there even Pro Bowl game anymore? I don’t know. The NFL’s Pro Bowl game was played on Tuesday night. If I had known about it, it wouldn’t have mattered. My wife and I were fixated on the final night of the Westminster Dog Show (won by Penny the incredlble Doberman Pinscher). The top canines provided more compelling viewing than the NFL’s cringeworthy post-season fare. Tuesday night’s NFL Pro Bowl drew an embarrassing 1.9 million viewers. That is down from last year’s slightly-less embarrassing 4.7 million Pro Bowl viewers. Historically, the Pro Bowl game would pit the NFL’s most talented players from the teams which had been eliminated from playoff competition. The game (played in full pads and helmets) was held from 1980 and for more than three decades in lovely Honolulu, Hawaii on the weekend prior to the NFL’s title game. That tropical setting was once considered a big enticement for players to participate and bring their families along for a week-long vacation. Those of us watching on television at home could enjoy a mental warm-up watching football being played in the toasty sunshine featuring nearby beaches. Not anymore. Football players who are making millions of dollars per year don’t seem to value a fully-paid vacation week in Hawaii like they once did. In 2023, the Pro Bowl morphed into today’s goofy assortment of skills challenges and a 7-on-7 flag football game. The venue was also scaled down. This year’s game was played on Tuesday night in a 4,000-seat convention center arena in San Francisco. In case you cared, the NFC All-Stars rallied for a (cough) thrilling 66-52 flag football win over the AFC All-Stars. Zzz. The NFL’s championship game kicks-off Sunday at 5:30 PM CST on NBC This year’s season finale pits the AFC’s New England Patriots against the NFC Seattle Seahawks. Before the 2025 NFL season kicked-off, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas had last year’s champion Philadelphia Eagles plus the AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills as the most likely teams to reach the championship game. Seattle and New England were significantly further down that list. Both teams missed the playoffs after the 2024 season. The Seahawks at least finished 10-7, but New England was a dismal 4-13 just one year ago. Only the 1999 St. Louis Rams had won just four games in a season (going 4-12) prior to returning the following year to win the NFL title. Rams’ quarterback Kurt Warner’s led the “Greatest Show on Turf” to an NFL championship. What caused such a terrific turnaround for this year’s New England Patriots? Last season’s 4-13 record by New England resulted in the team firing head coach Jerod Mayo. Former Patriots’ linebacker Mike Vrabel was given the chance to coach his former team beginning this season. Adding a talented coach like Vrabel certainly helped, but it doesn’t fully explain the Patriots’ turnaround story this season. The coach would replace 13 of the 22 starting players from last season. Every one of New England’s 11 NFL draft selections last spring made the cut and is still playing on the team as of this week. Add several financially prudent free agent signings, and the New England Patriots entered this season with a new team and a winning attitude. Coach Vrabel wanted “tough” minded players as he evaluate players being drafted or signed via free agency. A three-time NFL champion as a linebacker, Mike Vrabel played for legendary coach Bill Belichick and alongside quarterback Tom Brady for several years. He saw what type of mindset won titles in New England over the past quarter century. The Patriots steamrolled to a 14-3 record and won the AFC East title during the regular season. They beat the Houston Texans 28-16 in the divisional round and downed the #1 playoff seed Denver Broncos 10-7 in the AFC championship to earn a title shot this week. Seattle Seahawks traded their Pro Bowl quarterback and still improved in 2025 Gino Smith had been Seattle’s starting quarterback for two seasons through the end of the 2024 campaign. Smith had been named to the NFL’s Pro Bowl for two consecutive years. Surprisingly, the Seahawks traded Gino Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders during the offseason and were left without a starting quarterback. Seattle then hit the free agent jackpot by signing journeyman Sam Darnold to a three-year contract. Darnold is playing for his fifth NFL team in eight seasons and struggled for his first six years in the league. His breakout 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings helped Sam Darnold gain a more permanent home in Seattle. The Seahawks’ stingy defense was rated #1 in the NFL allowing just 17 points per game in leading Seattle to a sterling 14-3 regular season. The Seattle offense also scored 28 points per game which was eighth best in the league. Coach Mike MacDonald was a successful high school football player who suffered a serious injury in his final game. He attended the University of Georgia and didn’t play football. However, he started coaching a high school football team while still in college. A summa cum laude graduate in Finance, Mike MacDonald jumped into coaching upon graduating from college. He would eventually become the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. The youthful 38-year old coach then accepted the head coaching job in Seattle two years ago. The Seahawks, like their head coach, play fundamentally sound football and rely on their top-rated defense to win games. You won’t find many familiar stars in this Sunday’s NFL title game Can you name the starting running backs for either Seattle or New England? I can’t. America is going to get a chance to learn a lot about these two unheralded competitors and their coaches on Sunday night in Santa Clara, California. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots quietly did the weekly work to climb the standings and finish with identical 14-3 regular season marks. The two starting quarterbacks aren’t flashy but both passed for more than 4,000 yards in the regular season. New England’s Drake Maye tossed 31 touchdowns but only had eight intercepted. Seattle’s Sam Darnold had 25 touchdowns but was picked-off 14 times (third highest in the NFL this year). These two teams have identical season records, great defenses, and effective quarterbacks. The biggest surprise to me is that New England is considered a 4 ½ point underdog in Sunday’s game. Enjoy watching those very expensive $8 million per 30-second commercials and, perhaps, the game itself! The post It’s Football Friday! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.
