Good Morning, Coming down from Yorkshire to London I usually walk through Marchmont Street. I often stop and look up at a Blue Plaque over a shop that was once a hairdressers. It's where Kenneth Williams spent the first part of his life. I worked with him in the late 1970's when I was a young producer with a missionary society. We were looking at new ways of getting the Christian faith to resonate with young people. I'd heard somewhere that the Ayatollah Khomeini, then exiled in Paris, was flooding Iran with messages on audio cassettes to topple the Shah. It may seem quite a leap but it prompted me to wonder if we too could use cassettes to reach out to the next generation. So we hired four famous comedians to retell the life and parables of Jesus . Soon we were in the studio with Derek Nimmo, Dora Bryan, Thora Hird and - Kenneth Williams recording a sparkling script by Jenny Robertson. Yesterday marked the Centenary of Kenneth Williams' birth – one of Radio 4's famous voices who knew the power of comedy to shock, to scandalise and to deflate the pompous. But he was also a sensitive man who prayed at the end of each day out of the depths of his own tortured soul. He excelled in recording these cassettes and captured the way Jesus himself used stories to cut the powerful down to size, especially religious ones. One of Jesus' amusing stories was told against the hypocrisy of the judgmental - of two men, one with a plank shooting out of his eye trying to pick a spec out of the other's – a comic sketch worthy of Basil Fawlty berating a hapless hotel guest! The paradox of humour is that comedy can pack a serious punch which is why the powerful, especially dictators hate being made fun of. Nor can they tolerate the freedom the media give to voice such protest. 50 years on, Iran's latest Ayatollah, while recognising the role media played in bringing them to power , now appears to be tightly controlling the internet, in what is widely seen as an attempt to stem the flow of information about a government crackdown on protesters. Memories of Kenneth Williams today make me nostalgic for a more spacious world where the freedom to speak out and even to make fun of each other were the signs of safer times. Kenneth Williams – rest in peace and in the memory of our laughter.
In this special edition of Rosebud, we celebrate the late, great, self-proclaimed cult that is Kenneth Williams - on what would have been his 100th birthday. Julian Fellowes, the creator and writer of Downton Abbey, Gosford Park, The Gilded Age - among other brilliant television series and movies - is our guest today. You'll know Julian's work - because he is one of the most popular, and prolific, screenwriters of our times. What you may not know is that he and Gyles lived under the same roof as toddlers, and shared a bath on a number of occasions; Gyles's family rented the basement flat from the Fellowes family in the early 50s, and the boys played together and have known each other ever since. So this is a friendly conversation filled with warmth, intelligence, humour and great stories. Julian tells Gyles about his family, his first night at boarding school, and his days as a Debs' Delight at Cambridge. He talks about his somewhat unpopular decision to become an actor, and meeting and marrying his wife, Emma. This is a brilliant edition of Rosebud, thank you so much to Julian Fellowes for his time, energy and fabulous conversation. We're back this Sunday, with a special edition to celebrate the late, great Kenneth Williams. And we're releasing a special royal edition of More Rosebud on Tuesday next week, with Gyles reading from his diaries.Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube here. Join The Rosebud Family here. In this third podcast of our series, we look at The Scandal Magazine from the 5th radio series. The three amigos consider this to be one of the finest of the radio half hours, discuss the unusual appearance of guest star John Vere in this fifth series episode and consider the brilliant voices provided by Hattie Jacques who is in top form in this episode as both Miss Pugh and ‘Mabel under the table'. The trio also look at the roles of Kenneth Williams, and his excellent portrayal of both the taxi driver and the judge and consider how risqué this episode must have been in the 1950s. Finally, the team consider, in detail, which edition of Blabbermouth publications they will be in if they visit the Bag of Nuts after recording the episode. Congrats to Emmett Johnson, who was B1G RB of the Year and a first-team All-B1G player…it's too bad he's all alone in those honors (except Kenneth Williams being 2nd team All-B1G as a kick returner) No other Husker was named to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd team honor for offense or defense…who is to blame? On this episode of Generation Red: A Husker Podcast, the boys look back on the hard-fought win over Northwestern, which featured a spectacular kickoff return for a TD by Kenneth Williams that ended up being the difference in the game. Emmett Johnson was the workhorse on offense, and per usual, the referees missed calls, and made weird calls, which enabled the Wildcats to erase a two-score deficit in the 3rd quarter. After a fantastic drive engineered by Dylan Raiola, the Big Red scored the go ahead touchdown with 2:44 to play. Northwestern had a chance to convert on 4th down deep in Husker territory, and for one, the good guys didn't draw the short straw on the final defensive play, and went on to become bowl eligible in October for the first time since 2016. Join Coach, Justin, Scott and Ken as they recap the game, and then turn their attention to the big time night contest coming up next week in Memorial Stadium against the 23rd-ranked USC Trojans. #Nebraska #Huskers #Football #Northwestern #USC Want to grab some GenRed Merch? The latest Monday Night Therapy opened with relief and cautious optimism as Minnie and Fred celebrated Nebraska's sixth win, putting the Huskers at 6–2 and bowl eligible for the first time in years. Despite the milestone, fans remain divided—some thrilled with progress, others frustrated by “ugly wins.” Minnie and Fred agreed that injuries, inconsistent offensive line play, and lingering mistakes have made this season a grind, but one worth appreciating. They reviewed recent games, noting impressive wins over Cincinnati, Michigan State, Maryland, and Northwestern, and the lone disappointment at Minnesota, which they blamed on poor preparation and coaching. Special teams earned praise—especially Kenneth Williams, whose 95-yard kick return sealed the Northwestern victory and earned him Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. Running back Emmett Johnson's 124-yard game also drew admiration, cementing him as one of the Big Ten's top rushers. Looking ahead to the blackout game vs. USC, Minnie and Fred predicted a high-scoring shootout, emphasizing Nebraska's home-field advantage and USC's injuries. The episode closed on a hopeful note—Nebraska may not be perfect, but the team is improving, the fan base is re-energized, and the bowl drought is finally over. Go Big Red.

It was another low scoring first half with Nebraska leading, 7-6----then Kenneth Williams returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half for a TD---another TD made it 21-6…but Northwestern somehow got this game tied at 21-all Then, a terrible INT by Dylan Raiola…a big INT by Javin Wright…and a long drive with 4 3rd down conversions helped the Huskers to a much-needed 28-21 win and a guaranteed bowl game. This week on the Overreaction Show, Greg, Hoss, and Jake will discuss and break down Saturday's 28-21 win over the Northwestern Wildcats. As has been the Huskers' modus operandi in conference play, it was not a pretty game. It was, in fact, ugly. But as we have also seen most of this season (the exception being Minnesota, really), there were glimpses of some really stellar individual performances. Kenneth Williams had a return that would have had Lyell Bremser on his feet. Emmett Johnson continued to showcase his abilities. And the defense did just enough to help secure Nebraska's second-straight bowl-eligible season. The Huskers are 6-2. They are 3-2 in conference play and begin their Pac 12 swing next week with the USC Trojans at home followed by a trip to the Rose Bowl to face UCLA. If we've learned anything from the Big Ten in 2025 it's that anything is possible.
Michael Sheen is an award-winning actor. After finding his love for the stage with the West Glamorgan Youth theatre as a teenager, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He spent the 1990s making a name for himself as a stage actor, shining in the classics from Romeo and Juliet to Peer Gynt as well as in 20th century masterpieces such as Look Back in Anger and Amadeus, receiving several Olivier Award nominations along the way.A relocation to the US in the early 2000s with his then partner, the actress Kate Beckinsale, and their young daughter Lily prompted a move into films. His breakthrough came in 2003 when he portrayed Tony Blair in a Stephen Frears film called The Deal. It was the beginning of what became an unlikely specialism: morphing into real people from recent history: Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, Chris Tarrant, and Prince Andrew – with two more outings as Tony Blair thrown in for good measure.Michael was born in Newport, South Wales, in February 1969, the eldest of two children to Meyrick and Irene. He grew up in Port Talbot from the age of eight and considers it his hometown. His first love was football, and he was spotted as youngster by an Arsenal talent scout to play for their youth team. His parents decided against moving the family to London and he turned to acting instead and graduated from RADA in 1991.Alongside the classic dramas, his range extends to appearing in fantasy and science fiction films such as The Twilight Saga and Tron: Legacy. Michael has said that the most meaningful project to him was a modern restaging of the passion play in Port Talbot in 2011, which involved the participation of a thousand local people, because it opened his eyes to the difficulties many of them were experiencing. He has since used his own money to fund the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and set up an organisation which supports community groups. Reel Britannia - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism. Episode 178 - Carry On Cruising (1962) "During the War I did Arctic runs that would've made HMS Ulysses look like a trip to Brighton. Without getting a scratch! Two days on a simple cruise with you lot and look at me!" The sixth installment in the beloved Carry On franchise, 1962's Carry On Cruising holds a special place in the series' history. Not only did it take the familiar brand of British seaside humour to the high seas, but it was also the very first Carry On film to be shot and presented in glorious Eastmancolor. This transition to a vibrant palette marked a significant step forward for the series, elevating its visual appeal and setting a new standard for the films that would follow. However, the production was not without its own undercurrents of drama, and the final product received a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike, cementing its status as a unique and much-debated entry in the Carry On canon. All aboard the SS Happy Wanderer for what is, in theory, a relaxing cruise. Captain Crowther, played by the eternally exasperated Sid James, is hoping for one last, quiet trip before a swanky promotion. His hopes are, naturally, torpedoed within minutes. His crack team of sailors has been replaced by a collection of Britain's finest bumblers, seemingly sourced from a village fete raffle. There's Kenneth Williams as the First Officer, whose vocabulary is more expansive than the Atlantic itself, yet possesses the practical seamanship of a goldfish. Kenneth Connor is the ship's doctor, a man more interested in diagnosing a case of love-at-first-sight with a passenger than any actual ailments. And let's not forget Lance Percival as the chef, a culinary genius who discovers his arch-nemesis is the gentle rocking of the boat. What follows is less a luxury cruise and more a floating slapstick convention, now presented in dazzling colour for the very first time. This and previous episodes can be found everywhere you download your podcasts Bonus content available at: patreon.com/ReelBritanniaPodcast Follow us on Twitter @rbritanniapod Thanks for listening Scott and Steven
