Zombieland Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Andrew Gordon and Tara Erickson as they dive into the 2009 cult classic Zombieland—a razor-sharp horror-comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Uncharted, Santa Clarita Diet). In a world overrun by zombies, we follow Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network, Adventureland), a cautious everyman turned survivor, as he teams up with the rugged and relentless Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson, The Messenger, The Wolf of Wall Street). Along the way, they encounter the street-smart Wichita (Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine, Nim's Island) and the mysterious Little Rock (Emma Stone, La La Land, Crazy, Stupid, Love), each bringing their own unique survival skills to the mix. Tara & Andrew break down the film's most iconic moments—from the memorable "Double Tap" rule and other quirky survival commandments to the nail-biting zombie encounters and Bill Murray's legendary cameo that continues to delight fans. They also explore how Zombieland masterfully blends humor with horror, making it a standout in the zombie genre. In Episode 160 of PopCultX, titled “More Brains: Zombies We Love”, Danny and Gabriel immerse themselves in all things zombie—from fast-moving flesh-eaters to slow, tension-building hordes. They dive into what makes zombies so terrifying, debating the classic horror trope of fast versus slow zombies and what their personal strategies would be if the world suddenly fell into a zombie apocalypse. The episode highlights their favorite zombie movies, including Return of the Living Dead with its punk rock vibes, Shaun of the Dead for its perfect blend of humor and horror, and Zombieland for its self-aware, refreshingly comedic take on the genre. They also explore unique concepts from World War Z's plague avoidance to The Santa Clarita Diet, where Drew Barrymore hilariously plays a suburban mom with a taste for brains. Danny and Gabriel brainstorm ways to reinvent the zombie trope, imagining zombies who look normal until they attack, and drawing inspiration from Max Brooks' The Extinction Parade, where vampires go to war with zombies over their food supply. Their lively discussion also touches on the emotional weight of killing loved ones turned zombies, and a playful comparison between the enduring appeal of zombies versus vampires. Tune in to hear their zombie apocalypse survival plans, thoughts on keeping the genre fresh, and some wild hypotheticals that will leave you both laughing and a little creeped out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcultx/support

I'm at the main TEDx event, sitting in the theater next to a lady who's captured my attention. Her name is Carrie, and she's impeccably dressed. I can't help but fixate on her outfit! So as I'm chatting with her, I compliment her on her dress. She thanks me and says she's a designer who makes custom dresses for her clients based on their unique measurements. In addition to wanting to get a tape measure and order a custom-made dress of my own from her right then and there, I have to ask her out of curiosity, “How did you get started in the fashion business?” “I believe the fashion industry has it wrong,” she responds. “It should be about role models, not runway models.” She feels fashion needs to highlight the humans wearing the clothes, instead of the clothes themselves. Not only does she go on to debut at New York Fashion Week with this campaign, she's also one of the first designers to feature a model in a wheelchair on the runway. She's challenging societal norms and giving voice to a segment that doesn't always have a voice and doing so in an industry that is set in its ways in certain aspects. As someone who identifies as a non-binary gay cowboy, my special guest today also highlights marginalized voices in his work. For caregivers of a multi-racial families, hair care can be stressful and overwhelming. How do you provide the best care for your daughter or know what products to use? If you've had these questions, or felt overwhelmed and defeated by this topic, we have good news. Tony Award Nominated Acress Shalita Grant from the shows NCIS: New Orleans and You most recently, joins our show to discuss her new brand, Four Naturals Hair and provides a TON of hope and insight for caregivers just like you! About Shalita... Shalita Grant was raised in Petersburg, Virginia and attended high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland where she was a YoungArts Winner in Theater and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. At 17, she received a scholarship to attend the Julliard School for her B.F.A. in Drama, graduating in 2010. She starred as Cassandra in "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" on Broadway, for which she earned a Tony Award nomination for Featured Actress in a Play and won the 2013 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Her TV credits Include, NCIS: New Orleans, Santa Clarita Diet, Search Party and You. In Shalita's words... My journey with Four Naturals started with a ponytail. As an actress with Type 4 hair, the tightest texture on the hair chart, I faced unique challenges while on NCIS New Orleans. My ever-changing ponytail concealed the damage I was chasing. I experienced traction alopecia in my second season and significant hair loss along my hairline in the third season, leading me to leave my job by the fourth season. I experienced a hard truth: No matter how much money you have or who you have access to, if you have type 4 hair, your options are limited to wigs and extensions, getting locs, or just cutting it all off. After quitting, I recognized my hair as my number one acting career problem and set out to solve it. In 2019, I began reading journals and articles from the world of Cosmetic Chemistry - absorbing everything there was to know about the three parts of the hair strand, hair porosity, cationic and anionic charge, and more. After reading, I understood that everything I was taught to do to care for my fragile, fickle type 4 hair was pure ritual! No wonder I could never solve my chronic issues with dryness and breakage. I then researched the hair practices and ingredients used by the people of India, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Greece and created the patent-pending Four Naturals Treatment. I combined hair science and plant medicine and solved my lifelong issues with dryness, breakage, lack of curl definition, lack of established hair routine, and heat damage. The first treatment, I couldn't quite believe my results - my hair felt softer, the color was richer, and it appeared thicker, and my hair felt heavier! However, by my third treatment, my hair was undeniably different. I had the best hair of my life! It was so easy to maintain, unbelievably soft and strong, and I could flat iron it without the heat damage requiring a Big Chop. So, I created Four Naturals Hair, and my mission is to make the lives of people with Type 4 hair better, easier, and more consistent. Best of all, because my treatment addresses the hair health concerns of people whose needs have been ignored for generations, it solves everyone else's health concerns. I see the Four Naturals Treatment as the beginning of a hair revolution. How To Connect With Shalita... Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor Jonathan Slavin, one of the stars of the play Home Front, which is about the obstacles facing a black naval officer and his white fiancee in post WW2 America and is currently playing at the Victory Theatre in Burbank, CA. Jonathan plays the couple's gay neighbor, who is also a veteran. Jonathan talks about working with the playwright Warren Leight, who based Jonathan's character on his uncle, and how he balanced bringing humor to the show without playing into wacky gay neighbor clichés. Jonathan also talks about his career in television, playing series regular roles on Dr. Ken, Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Union Square, and Santa Clarita Diet and guest roles on shows like Grace and Frankie, Pam & Tommy, Grey's Anatomy and Friends. He also reveals which appearance brings in the most residual cash and which show he gets recognized from most. Jonathan also talks about being out from the beginning of his career, whether things have changed for gay actors in that time, that time he got fired from a job for being too gay, going to a gay march in Washington DC when he was just 17 and why he's so glad the closet never called to him. Other topics include: how Dennis and Jonathan first met over 20 years ago, the one yes that changed his career, how he met his longtime husband Michael, working cleanup crew at an LA sex club, his most unfortunate haircut, his lifelong love of animals—he owns a pig!--and what it was like to go back at speak at the Methodist Prep School where he always felt so out of place.
Some more updates from Carolyn, and a re-release of a time-relevant episode: We've got a delightful mix of queer joy and cannibalism on the agenda with actors Liv Hewson and Jasmin Savoy (Yellowjackets on Showtime). First, we get all of our fangirling out of the way by asking about our favorite new show, as well as Scream, Santa Clarita Diet, and other projects these two talents have under their very gay belts. Then, we talk about their new podcast (Most Presents: The Homo Schedule) and what it means to spread queer joy. Also, we feel inspired to take a cue from our guests and bring a game into the ep, so get ready to play Gay Or Straight Agenda along with us! Finally, we end with a question from a listener who feels like they're out of love luck. Just in time for Valentine's Day. Diet NIMBY concludes with a travelogue. Ryan and Matt commute across the Santa Clarita Valley to visit locations used in the filming of "Santa Clarita Diet," finding themselves more enlightened by the sights of some stores and buildings while feeling underwhelmed at others used minimally despite other desirable locations more appropriate for whatever the show seemed to go for. Finally, they commune at the Westfield Valencia Town Center to give their final thoughts on the show and, as one of our hosts was upon departure while recording this episode, what parting words they have for a town he's resided in for roughly 20 years. Mars on Life cohost Sebastian Schug joins the Diet NIMBY team to talk about his experience watching Season One of "Santa Clarita Diet." The concept of identity – within the Santa Clarita Valley and identifying with the quirkiness of the Netflix series – is widely discussed, along with the city's cannabis business moratorium, subjecting one's life to the mundanity of small-town living and the vaguely direct (or directly vague?) references to the actual town prevalent throughout the entire season. At long last, Matt reads his dra-MATT-ic reading of his Daily Bruin review of "Santa Clarita Diet," followed by the most important question we need to ask ourselves: are we judging this show too harshly? This has been a stressful but rewarding experiment. We have no plans to continue on with Season Two of "Santa Clarita Diet" but fret not. There's one more special Diet NIMBY discussion coming soon. Time for some actual NIMBYism on full display in the latest episodes of "Santa Clarita Diet" on review here. Following our discussion about the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, we analyze the scrutiny on neighborhood safety easy for one to find in the Santa Clarita Valley. Another SCVism we uncover is the rise of hipsterism circa 2010: was it an unfinished revolution or a failed revolution from the start? There's also some missing digit trauma (indeed), more bad screenwriting to pluck apart and some of the most troupe-y, "Star Trek" style dialogue to ever pop up on this bizarre series. More SCVisms are abound in this latest installment of Diet NIMBY. Is narcissism synonymous with being a zombie, or is it a basic evolutionary trait? Learn our answers and more as Matt and Ryan talk about Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy Dan blackmailing Joel, a story note with hints of the famous L.A. County Deputy gangs covered across SoCal media (read Cerise Castle's intrepid reporting about it in KnockLA). Our cohosts also talk about this show's namesake NIMBYism in the San Fernando Valley and its middle class status compared to Santa Clarita's alleged middle class status. Want to be regional? Switch the watermelon eating competition for the famous chili cook-offs. Overthinking about "Santa Clarita Diet" led the guys to sharing their localized writing pen collections, wannabe teenage gangsters and grilling. Trauma reveals itself as Ryan and Matt review episodes three and four of "Santa Clarita Diet." Abby's status as a SCV high school student goes under the microscope, the quirks of neighborhood safety in an age of Nextdoor is scrutinized, the power of SCV educators like the show's Principal Novak is called into question and our cohosts dive into the show's portrayal of the region's geography. Do not worry, not all of our episodes will keep being this long.* Social media: Mars on Life: @marsonlifeshow on Twitter and Instagram Ryan Mancini: @mancinira (Twitter) and @manciniryan (Instagram) Matt Fernandez: @matt_fern (Twitter) and @thewoodseyninja (Instagram) Artwork by Zachary Erberich (@zacharyerberichart) "Spider Eyes" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ *See Episode 4. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mars-on-life-show/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mars-on-life-show/support
Welcome to Diet NIMBY. Santa Clarita Valley residents Ryan Mancini and Matt Fernandez provide culturally concise commentary about the 2017 Netflix series "Santa Clarita Diet." This miniseries will take a look at the inside humor within a show based on an expansive, thematically "small" town and where the series converges with the stereotypes, caricatures and idiosyncrasies one can find visiting the region and meeting its people. Ryan and Matt share some of their own experiences, as they will through the next four episodes as they dissect Season One two episodes as a time. Is this a comedy horror? Does the series demand its overwhelmingly positive reviews? Does Timothy Olyphant pull off being a comedic actor? How meta does the series get when addressing SCV's darker open secrets? All will be explained, discussed, exasperated and revealed in this deliberately short-lived series. Beware all ye who enter. Ever heard of "Santa Clarita Diet"? The Netflix series has the attention of Mars on Life cohosts Ryan Mancini and Matt Fernandez as they analyze and over-analyze this short-lived but popular bite of the streaming age. In short, does the show live up to the standards of the region it is set in and what is its worth in a strange age for TV-land? This spinoff miniseries premieres Oct. 1 as part of our Halloween lineup, be sure to tune in wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Coiro concluded by saying She-Hulk's plot is "really about getting to know the characters" and letting viewers see the moments that they never get to explore in plot-driven stories. "So we tease Titania," she continued. "She will come back but she doesn't need to come back immediately, and that way we get to really get to know our characters." Adam Rose has lived the acting life in Hollywood since he was 9-years old, making his debut opposite Robin Williams and Julie Kavner in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. With over 55 tinsel-town projects to date he's played roles on the sets of luminary directors and actors with credits that include The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet, Supernatural, Merry Happy Whatever, and so many more. He's worked with Matthew Broderick, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, and Anna Paquin, to name a few. As a writer, Adam sold his first pilot, PISSED, to Warner Bros. His short film, QUEEN, which he wrote and directed, screened at over 50 film festivals and won several awards. But back in 2009, he intuitively knew that social media would change how the world consumes content forever. At a time when most of his celebrity peers turned their noses up to anything "online," Adam began cultivating fans outside of his Hollywood projects. Today, Adam has amassed an enormous social media following, with over 3.7 million followers on TikTok and nearly half a million on Instagram, not to mention his growing YouTube. He's one of the most beloved creators with A-list brand deals, known for his viral comedy sketches, dances, and "lovely" wife, a character he plays opposite himself. In this episode, Adam and I unpack the question, "What drives the other: Does the traditional career drive a social following, or does a social following drive your traditional career?" It's an interesting debate. We dive into the story of digital identity and the famous blue cardigan that his fans are obsessed with, and how his community reacts to his content. Adam shares his content strategy, secrets to creativity, production schedule, and a typical day in his life. The whole episode is like a hug in your ear, full of warmth, comedy, and advice. *** This episode of LEAVE YOUR MARK is brought to you by Ever/Body, a New-York based cosmetic dermatology business that exists to thoughtfully support every body along their beauty journey.
