Matt Waldman delivers a solo RSP Cast with pre-NFL Combine thoughts on 52 running backs from the 2023 NFL Draft class.  Topics Why is Bijan Robinson entering the NFL at the perfect time for his skills? Which backs' draft capitals could wind up running backward and which back is literally running backward? Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Curvilinear Movement with RB Bijan Robinson (Texas)

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary illustrates how Texas running back Bijan Robinson of the 2023 NFL Draft class uses curvilinear movement to efficiently defeat two angles of pursuit at the same time.  What Is Curvilinear Movement? Imagine a motorcyclist or speedskater taking a curve at a high speed. Their bodies (and in the biker's case, the machine) bend into the curve. This movement helps the individual change direction without losing as much speed as they would with a turn requiring a sharp angle. There are two facets of curvilinear behavior we observe: How dramatic the bend in the curve is (movement). How fast the individual's movement is when working that bend (speed). When a football player can execute curvilinear movement with speed, these skills add a dangerous weapon to his athletic arsenal as a ballcarrier, pass rusher, route runner, or pursuing defender. Why Is Curvilinear Movement Valuable? Changes of direction along a curve are subtler to track than changing direction at a hard angle. As mentioned earlier, curvilinear movement is often more efficient for the individual executing it to maintain his speed. Hard-angle changes of direction require the individual to slow down, gather his base of gravity in a more dramatic fashion, and then turn. As a ballcarrier, this act of slowing down to gather steps allows pursuit more time to make up ground. There are changes of direction at hard angles that are more sudden, but the stress on the body makes it more difficult to execute when approaching the turn at a high rate of speed. SBNation's Mark Schofield returns to Matt Waldman's RSP Cast for a little break from football with part two of our scouting the warriors in George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. This week, we seed the combatants in a 16-team and 18-team tourney. The NFL playoffs are around the corner, draft season is on its way, and as Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell has figured out by injecting tug of war into his team's practices, sometimes you have to switch things up to keep things fresh. This week, Mark Schofield and I scout the warriors from the Game of Thrones universe. We chose the 18 best warriors from the television version of the story who the audience actually saw in a fight. Last week, we graded the warriors on specific categories. This week, we're assigning seeds and creating tourney brackets. Next week, we'll be breaking down specific matchups and how we think they'd fare. We'll be continuing this until we arrive at the winners of our mock tourneys. There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam. He's a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He's also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats. Unlike Dwain McFarland, whose work delves into the statistical process, Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary illustrates how Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson of the 2022 NFL Draft class uses a footwork technique called the hip shift to defeat off-coverage near the top of his stem.  What Is A Hip Shift? A footwork technique, a hip shift is a series of three moves used in combination to earn a favorable position on a defender, usually when that defender is playing coverage directly over the top of the receiver. Also commonly known as a "duck walk," the hip shift begins with a push in the opposite direction of the eventual break path as a setup for a crossover move. For example, if the receiver intends to break to the left, here's the order of the moves for a hip shift: A hard step/plant to the left. The very next step moves immediately to the right (known as a rebound step). The final step is a crossover to the left. You can think of the sequence as 1) A plant step in direction X. 2) A rebound step in direction Y. 3) A final crossover step back to direct X. Most defensive backs are trained to anticipate that the first move a receiver makes is setting up a final move in the opposite direction. This a natural 1-2 rhythm sequence that opponents anticipate. The hip shift works well because it's a 1-2-3 rhythm sequence that throws off the defender's anticipation of the 1-2 style of moves. The hip shift is most effective against defenders playing off the receiver. If the defender is playing directly over the receiver, the hip shift at a high rate of speed can shake the defender in the wrong direction. If the defender is playing over the receiver but he's shaded to the side where the receiver is breaking his route, the receiver will often slow his pace to set up the hip shift and this often throws off the rhythm of the coverage and moves the defender out of position. A hip shift is one of 10 footwork techniques the Rookie Scouting Portfolio defines and tracks for evaluating wide receiver performance. Many of these techniques are used in combination to earn separation against coverage, depending on the position of the defender and the route. What A Hip Shift Looks Like with New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson My colleague from Fantasy Astronauts did a nice job of capturing a hip shift from Garrett Wilson two weeks ago. Wilson executes the moves with additional upper body movement and a fast pace so it's nice to see this slowed down and the final yellow arrow with a zig-zagging stem approximating the initial plant, the rebound step, and the final crossover. https://twitter.com/JetPackGalileo/status/1600254520671420416 Whether you call it a hip shift, a duck walk, or a slinky series of moves, it's a common technique that you'll see top receivers use against off-coverage. SBNation's Mark Schofield returns to Matt Waldman's RSP Cast for a little break from football with a conversation about scouting the warriors in George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. We chose the 18 best warriors from the television version of the story who the audience actually saw in a fight and graded the top three in these categories: Most Powerful Most Agile Most Technically Skilled Most Versatile Most Cunning/Crafty Most Stamina Toughest Bravest In the coming weeks, we'll do shows that announce the seedings of a tournament and project how the tournament would play out. Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: The In-Set and the Peek Techniques with Stanford WR Michael Wilson

Matt Waldman's RSP Cast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2022

Matt Waldman defines the basics of the In-Set and the Peek Techniques in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from Stanford NFL Draft Prospect, WR Michael Wilson What Is An In-Set? A technique during the stem of a route, an in-set is a wide receiver's movement that leans inside. The purpose of the technique is to manipulate the coverage into thinking that the receiver is beginning a break to the inside when he's actually preparing to break outside. Receivers typically perform this technique after they've placed a defender in a trailing position during the stem of the route. From this position, coverage in a trailing position is more susceptible to react to the In-Set regardless of whether they have help from a safety over the top or they are in man-to-man coverage. If they have help over the top, the defender will believe they have a strong chance of undercutting the route from a trailing position if the receiver's leaning inside is a tip-off of a break to the inside. In the heat of the moment, defenders become far more reactive to receiver movement when a receiver earns vertical separation on him--even if they have help from up high. If the defender is playing man-to-man with no help over the top, the sense of urgency to regain ground on the receiver is heightened to the point that they are more likely to react to movement as if it's a tell rather than a manipulative ploy. On its own, the In-Set can bait a defender in the wrong direction, especially when the receiver has earned a step or two on the defender and has cut directly in front of the coverage. However, most wide receivers combine the In-Set with the Peek Technique. What Is A Peek Technique? Receivers often use their eyes and/or heads to manipulate coverage to react in the wrong direction. When a receiver turns his head and eyes in the opposite direction of their intended break before they reach the top of their stem, this is a Peek Technique. The Peek Technique is like the exclamation point at the end of the In-Set's sentence or the cherry on top of the In-Set's sundae. It's an additional detail to the effort to manipulate the defender in the wrong direction. The In-Set or the Peek can manipulate coverage as singular ploys. However, the two complement each other perfectly and are generally more effective together than separately. What An In-Set and Peek Looks Like on Film with Stanford WR Michael Wilson Wilson is one of the best manipulators in his stem among the route runners in the 2023 NFL Draft class. This alone won't make him a productive NFL player, but Wilson's use of a variety of techniques during the meat of the route is often missing from college prospects as well as many young pros. Here's a route against Notre Dame where Wilson combines the In-Set and the Peek to break open. This is not the only time Wilson has demonstrated this pairing of techniques on film. https://youtu.be/LSu24KfsT_s And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2022 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.  Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   Best yet, proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat the sexual abuse of children.

These are the same things head coach Mike McDaniel noted to the media when discussing how he salvaged Tagovailoa's confidence in his play. McDaniel is a sterling example of an offensive coach who has developed a balance between task-oriented details and strategic thinking. This is a reflection of a coach who understands this side of football to the point that he can deviate from day-to-day details and create adjustments that make a significant difference in performance. This week, I discuss the differences between task-oriented and strategic behavior in football coaching and management and celebrate the success the Dolphins are having because of McDaniel's ability to balance these two important mindsets. Matt Waldman's RSP defines how he grades focus versus contact at the catch point for NFL Draft prospects with the help of a play from Penn State Wide Receiver Parker Washington.   Football Will Always Be A Collision Sport Even if tackle football goes the way of the dodo and the game evolves into a mashup of basketball and flag football, the fundamental aspects of the game will always include bodies moving with high intensity and often in close quarters. Even if unintentional, collisions are an inevitable part of the game. Although the vast majority of collisions take place at the line of scrimmage between linemen and ball carriers, pass catchers are recipients of the most violent collisions in the sport because routes and coverage demand players to build momentum into the point of impact. Pass catchers understand the potential of being on the receiving end of a hit that feels like a car wreck any time they attack a target. The ability to concentrate on the task of completing the catch before protecting oneself from an oncoming hit is the hallmark of a receiver with the physical and mental toughness to compete in the NFL. Even when the contact isn't as violent as a collision and instead, it's a surgically-placed reach, push, or pull at the ball, hands, or arms of the receiver, a pass catcher must display focus and comfort with defender contact at the catch point. Scenarios Requiring Focus The Rookie Scouting Portfolio has four basic scenarios where a receiver must display heightened focus and physical toughness to win the football. Tight Coverage: A defender has tight coverage on a receiver when he is making contact or he is close enough to make contact or extend his hand into the frame of the receiver. Contact to the Back: When a defender can slap, push, or hit the receiver from an indirect angle away from the receiver's field of vision that lands on the receiver's side, back, or the back of his legs. Contact to the Chest: When a defender can slap, push, or hit the receiver from a direct angle within the receiver's field of vision that lands on the receiver's chest, side, or front of his legs. Hard Shots: Catching the ball against collisions with violent impact have a higher degree of difficulty than other forms of contact. The RSP gives them their own category of value relative to contact that isn't as violent. A hit with notable force from the defender is violent contact and it's generated based on a combination of factors: Momentum heading into the collision point. An accurate strike that hits the opponent as intended. A strike hits through the target point of the opponent's body and not just onto the target. How the receiver or ballcarrier reacts to the hit doesn't define whether the hit is violent. We've seen ballcarriers bounce off violent hits as if they weren't violent at all. Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Data as Matt Waldman's cohost for the 2022 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. This week's topics: The Marty Schottenheimer Rant: Why he should be a Hall of Famer. A decent guideline for determining worthwhile football stats. The nerds' slow evolution toward valuing indirect data. The irony of task-oriented thinkers in analytics judging strategic thinking. Areas where Schottenheimer was a task-oriented and strategic thinker. Dented Cans in Dynasty formats: How to identify these players. Why value is often gained even before they see the field in an attempt to rebound from their value trough? Recent examples of dented cans that regained or added value. Current dented cans to leverage. Montreal Alouettes' head of scouting Russ Lande and the RSP's Matt Waldman discuss the success of Miami Dolphins' quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the Colts' hiring of Jeff Saturday, Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells, Andy Reid, and how it relates to effectively balancing task-oriented management principles with flexible and strategic thinking as an NFL head coach. Topics This week: The successful marriage of the player and scheme in the case of Tua Tagovailoa shouldn't be a knock on Tagovailoa. Where teams make mistakes by taking proven players and forcing new tasks on them. Why many task-oriented coaches fail. When task-oriented coaches are needed and when they must expand their skill base to reach another level of value. How owners influenced by the media create a "can't-win" situation for coaching hires if you play their game. How Bill Walsh's regimes succeeded with a lot of task-oriented principles thanks to the self-scouting of the coaches in action. Why Bill Parcells might have been a good NBA coach. Why Andy Reid has a strong balance between task-oriented and strategic thinking. How Jeff Saturday could potentially change how the NFL hires coaches. Even if the media and former players and coaches are proven right specifically about Saturday, there's a broader point underscoring the situation where they will remain wrong. Matt Waldman defines the basics of Transitions in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from Iowa State NFL Draft Prospect, WR Xavier Hutchinson. What Are Transitions? Transitions are the techniques used to change from pass catcher to ball carrier. Effective transitions get receivers downhill in a hurry and help them maximize yardage. Offenses that employ a lot of pass patterns with receivers moving across the field after the break rely heavily on the receiver to execute good transitions. Teams that feature a lot of these patterns in their scheme drafted these receivers for their skills in the open field. Receivers who don't transition effectively aren't optimizing the intent of the pattern, the timing of the target, or the quarterback's placement of the ball relative to the coverage. Even when receivers are running patterns with breaks that terminate with a turn back the quarterback against tight coverage, an effective transition can create space that isn't there at the catch point. There are two simple and valuable rules for effective transitions that help receivers optimize their transition from a pass catcher to a ballcarrier. The Basic Techniques of Transitions Catch and Pierce: Getting downhill as fast as possible. Snap turns north-south. Limit unnecessary steps and make the turn tight and immediate. Accelerate through and out of the turn. When possible, use optimal pad level and body lean to anticipate contact and maximize gains through collisions. Tight ball security. Obey the Ball: The receiver turns downhill in the direction where the target leads them. The premise is to trust that the quarterback is acting as the receiver's eyes and placing the ball in the optimal position. The exception to this premise: When the receiver is aware of the position of the coverage relative to the break and it requires a turn away from the target's placement. Even when the target isn't accurate and leads the receiver into potential contact that the receiver couldn't anticipate prior to the break, a tight catch and pierce can mitigate contact if not avoid it altogether. Matt Waldman defines the basic concepts of route running against zone coverage in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from North Carolina NFL Draft Prospect, WR Josh Downs. Zone Routes Are A Different Animal Most conversations about route-running are devoted to beating defenders playing one-on-one against a receiver. Zone coverage is a significant part of defensive football and there's more to it than simply finding an open spot. Receivers have to see the coverage the same as their quarterback. They also have to understand how to manipulate the position of defenders to create open spots, maximize the potential space within that open area, and communicate in a timely and accurate manner to the quarterback that they are open and ready for the football. The Basic Techniques of Zone Routes Scanning the Field. Identifying the potential coverage triangles of defenders that will factor into the route. Identifying the defender in the second level of the field: A shallow safety. A dropping defensive lineman. A linebacker in the shallow or intermediate. A cornerback playing the shallow/intermediate zone. Building to Depth: Stretching the coverage to create a wide-enough hole in the zone. Widening the position of defenders with the initial path (stem) of the route. Working to an appropriate depth to force defenders playing deep to retreat or play on their heels. Throttling Down to the Appropriate Spot: Identifying when the defender is presenting favorable leverage for the receiver to make his break. Snapping the turn of the break so the change of direction and pace is sudden to maximize separation. Turning the head and chest to make a friendly target with the quarterback. Tempo the Break: Adjusting whether to throttle down to a specific spot or slowing the pace of a moving break based on the route and the position of defenders in the coverage triangle. The objective is not to run into another defender's area and give him room to undercut or cut off the target. Showing the Eyes at the Right Moment: The eyes communicate to the quarterback back when you're ready for the ball. Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Data as Matt Waldman's cohost for the 2022 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. This week's topics: Our stances on trades in fantasy leagues and how to handle conflicts stemming from them. Quarterbacks in dynasty formats. Why is the position as a whole underrated? Specific players, who are underrated and overrated? Influential teachers/lessons we've learned in our lives. The journey of learning to be yourself. Matt Waldman’s RSP Scouting Glossary: Stalk Blocking Basics with Charlotte WR Grant DuBose

Matt Waldman defines the basics of Stalk Blocking in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from Charlotte NFL Draft Prospect, WR Grant DuBose. What Is Stalk Blocking? When the blocking assignment calls for an offensive player detached from the formation to work toward a defender to execute the block, this is a stalk block. This method involves the receiver being the aggressor/initiator of the interaction without manipulating the defender into believing that he's running a route. The Basic Techniques of Stalk Blocking Break down in the Contact Zone. The Contact Zone is within two yards of the defender. Breaking down involves these components: A square stance: The hips and pads pointed squarely at the opponent. The feet are placed at shoulder width to generate a solid base/anchoring point during contact. The knees and hips are bent in an athletic position to solidify the base/anchoring/leverage. Maintaining the wide base by shuffling the feet. Take the air out: Earning a chest-to-chest position with the defender to maximize leverage. Don't overextend: Keeping the head and eyes up. The upper body should not be too far over the knees in an unstable stance. These body positioning points encourage a stable base for an attack or to handle contact from the opponent. Hand and arm positions: The intent is to attack the center of the opponent's gravity and maintain a stable position. Tight hands aiming for the chest plate of the opponent. Elbows bent. The punch: Some blocks don't require a punch. When they do . . . Tight hands Elbows bent Uppercut motion Rolling through the hips with an upward trajectory to generate force without overextending the frame. Running the feet after contact. Maintaining a wide base Shuffling the feet Maintaining the hands tight and in the chest of the opponent as much as possible. NFL Players Who Fit/Don’t Fit Our Archetypes: Matt Waldman’s RSP Scout Talk with Russ Lande

Montreal Alouettes' head of scouting Russ Lande and the RSP's Matt Waldman go position-by-position and discuss productive NFL players who fit or don't fit our desired archetypes at each position. Who are our types of players at each position — players we might take ahead of more productive options at the position who don't fit our archetype when building a team? That's the topic of this week's scout talk with Montreal Alouettes U.S. Head of Scouting Russ Lande and Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman. They go position-by-position, discussing the traits and skills that will gain or lose value for them when considering what they value at each position. This is the first of a two-part conversation on this topic that will eventually cover most of the positions. This week: Why Kyler Murray's game, a good young passer, goes against our type of desired player relative to Lamar Jackson or even less productive players like Davis Mills, Geno Smith, and Derek Carr. We appreciate Mike Williams and Kadarius Toney but we discuss what they have in common that doesn't fit our type for the receiver position while bringing up others who do. Why Colts' cornerback Kenny Moore's game encompasses a lot of qualities that are missing from other players we discuss. What put Drue Tranquill's career on a better track than Johnathan Abraham's? Why we loved Grant Delpit pre-draft but how he hasn't tightened up his game to be a productive fit in the NFL. And what all of this has to do with what we seek from safeties. Why Myles Jacks Jack is a linebacker type that Russ covets and Denzel Perryman is a type he wouldn't build around but would make good use of his services? Why Matt covets Eric Kendricks and Pete Woerner. Who would Matt prefer as a running back type between a player he loves to watch as a fan and a backup he appreciates more as an evaluator? The player who runs on the edge of abandon that Russ values and a productive player who doesn't fit Russ' archetype at the position. Why Ezekiel Elliott is still a top back? In two weeks, we'll cover the offensive and defensive lines and finish up tight and running backs. Another great pod that's appointment listening. And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2022 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.
