The U.S. just carried out its most significant strikes on Iran in 45 years. President Trump declared victory, but his intelligence agencies aren't so sure. This week, Matt is joined by The Atlantic's Shane Harris to unpack what we actually know about the strikes' effectiveness, the fractured intel picture behind them, and how DNI Tulsi Gabbard has navigated the fallout. They discuss her eroding influence, the internal backlash to her public testimony, and what her tenure reveals about the growing politicization of the intelligence community—and the risks when presidents try to shape intel to match their narrative. The human footprint may not be easily measurable, but it is crucial in shaping the planet for better and for worse – but most of the time it is the latter. Corinna Bellizzi sits down with biologist Shane Campbell-Staton, PhD, who hosts the aptly named show "Human Footprint." He talks all about his experiences traveling around the world to delve into different human activities, cultures, and lifestyles to understand how they impact our society and environment. Shane also shares insights on how supermarkets changed the way we eat, the value of humanity's fundamental interconnectedness, the true costs of hydroelectric power, and the truth behind the bee colony collapse.About Guest:Shane is interested in how human history, culture, technology and politics influence life, biological stress and evolution of species around the world. He uses physiology, gene expression, genomics and experimentation to identify genes and traits that allow animals to rapidly adapt to new environmental pressures faced in a human-dominated world. Shane also has a deep passion for sharing science with the public. His own passion for science was kindled through television as a child. Growing up in a small town in South Carolina, he was not exposed to much nature or the outdoors. But watching nature documentaries and TV shows featuring passionate presenters, like Steve Irwin and Jeff Corwin, he developed a love for the natural world. Now Shane is sharing his own passions and the wonders of science with a diverse audience through his research as well as visual and audio media.Guest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shane-campbell-staton-034a1380/Guest Website: https://www.campbellstaton.com/Guest Social: https://www.pbs.org/show/human-footprint/https://www.instagram.com/shane.campbellstaton/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-biology-of-superheroes-podcast/id1314139416https://www.tiktok.com/@pbshttps://www.youtube.com/@PBS/featuredAdditional Resources Mentioned:The Impact of Climate Storytelling with Trip Jennings and Maiya May of WEATHERED, a PBS DocuseriesThe Impact of Dams on the Health of Our Ecosystems with Steve Hawley, Author of CrackedThe Consequences of Farmed Salmon with Simen Saetre, Author of The New FishShow Notes: Raw audio00:02:37 - Shane Campbell-Staton And Human Footprint00:08:24 - What To Expect From Season 200:11:19 - How Supermarkets Changed Our Daily Lives00:13:41 - Understanding The Honey Trap And Colony Collapse00:17:49 - Insights About Hydroelectric Power00:24:50 - Appreciating Fundamental Interconnectedness00:26:52- Environmental Response To Human Footprint00:34:45 - Telling Stories About Social Justice00:46:12 - Evolving From Domination To Reciprocity00:53:39 - How To Remian Hopeful And Keep The Faith00:56:17 - Making Small Changes For The Greater Good00:59:51 - Episode Wrap-up And Closing WordsJOIN OUR CIRCLE. Is China's strategic push for chemical self-sufficiency reshaping the global petrochemical landscape? John Richardson, senior consultant at ICIS, joins The Chemical Show to share insights on how misjudged growth expectations for China, shifting demographics, and the rise of state-driven capacity expansions have led to the deepest, longest downturn in industry history. John and host Victoria Meyer examine why capacity was built around hopes for perpetual strong Chinese demand, only for real estate and demographic headwinds to alter the trajectory—creating a world of oversupply, negative margins, and mounting uncertainty. Their conversation covers the ongoing impact of trade tensions, the real drivers behind Chinese investment decisions, and why shutting down uneconomical assets is becoming a pressing necessity, especially in Europe and Asia. John and Victoria also weigh the challenges and promises of AI and data intelligence in a conservative, data-guarded sector, and offer advice for industry leaders navigating persistent market disruption. For chemical professionals, these perspectives highlight why adaptability, intelligence, and innovation will be critical in mastering both today's volatility and tomorrow's opportunities. Discover more about the following topics: How China's pivot from growth to self-sufficiency is reshaping global petrochemicals. Why chemicals face their worst business cycle ever, with Asian producers bleeding money on polyethylene. How tariffs and shifting policies create constant uncertainty for chemical companies. Why China's government-backed enterprises compete on strategy, not just cost. How data and artificial intelligence will separate industry winners from losers. “We've all assumed that polymer sciences are, you know, composites and stuff and playing with the same basic molecules, but maybe not.” — John Richardson 00:00 Chemical Industry Insights by John 06:08 Domestic Chemical Manufacturing Expansion 08:48 Polyethylene Margins: China vs. Middle East 11:31 Tariffs and Global Business Perspectives 14:43 China's Trade Resilience Amid Challenges 20:23 Data Sharing's Impact on AI 23:50 Debating Productivity's True Impact 26:34 AI: Industrial Revolution or Renaissance? 30:49 Innovative Multi-Pane Glass Advancements 31:43 Innovative, Stronger Glass Advances Subscribe to The Chemical Show on YouTube ***Don't miss an episode: Subscribe to The Chemical Show on your favorite podcast player. ***Like what you hear? Copper State of Mind: public relations, media, and marketing in Arizona
Abbie and Adrian talk about bridging the gap between what can be measured and what truly matters in communications and public relations. They discuss how the phrase "what gets measured gets managed"—often wrongly attributed to Peter Drucker—can be misleading since not everything that truly matters can be quantified and counted. Abbie shares her experiences from earlier in her career, reminiscing about the era of clip books, where the success of PR campaigns was measured by the volume of media coverage, rather than the content or its impact. They conclude that while measurement tools and technology have certainly advanced, the core challenge remains: identifying the right metrics that resonate with the client's goals and demonstrate the value of a campaign in achieving business success. Read the transcript and notes for this episode on our website. Key Takeaways Effective PR measurement requires aligning communications strategy with overarching business goals to accurately assess impact and success. Modern tools and analytics enable the measurement of various aspects of PR campaigns, but there is still a challenge in capturing intangible impacts like brand awareness. PR & communications professionals must align their measurement strategies with the actual business objectives to demonstrate real value to clients. Misalignment between client expectations and PR outcomes can result from failure to ask the right questions at the start of a campaign. Continuous dialogue between PR agencies and clients is crucial for demonstrating value and securing long-term partnerships. Recently declared an epidemic by the U.S. Surgeon General, loneliness affects millions of people, particularly those in midlife. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: - The True Impact of Loneliness: Joyce and I explore how loneliness isn't just an emotional issue, but one with significant mental and physical health consequences—comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. - Midlife & Loneliness: Why this phase of life can be especially isolating, and how we can reverse this trend by nurturing social connections. - Practical Steps to Combat Loneliness: Whether it's through building casual friendships, walking together, or becoming more active in your community, Joyce shares actionable ways to reconnect. - The Role of Technology: While social media can offer meaningful connections, it can also amplify feelings of isolation. We explore how to use technology to foster, rather than hinder, real connection. - Why Friendship Requires Effort: Learn why maintaining relationships requires intentionality and action, especially as we age. - Community & Connection: Discover how getting involved in your local community can play a crucial role in combating feelings of loneliness. - The Pandemic's Role: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social isolation and what we can do to heal from its lingering effects. You've probably heard someone say, "The market averages 12% returns over the long term." In this episode, Brian and Hans tackle why this is an extremely misleading metric that can lead to unrealistic expectations about wealth growth. Using real-world examples, they demonstrate how the average rate of return fails to accurately predict investment outcomes. Not only can this metric not be used for future return projections, but it does not even accurately reflect the actual returns over the time span from which the numbers were derived! Also absent in most financial projects are the eroding factors that can significantly reduce actual returns, such as taxes, fees, and portfolio churn. This episode will challenge what you think you know about market returns and offer a fresh perspective on building long-term wealth. The Average Rate of Return Fallacy: The average rate of return is a misleading metric for financial planning. It fails to accurately reflect real investment outcomes because it doesn't account for the sequence of returns, particularly washing out the impact of negative years. This can lead to significant overestimation of future wealth. The True Impact of Losses: Even a few negative years can dramatically impact long-term wealth accumulation. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain just to break even. This underscores the importance of protecting your capital and seeking financial vehicles that offer uninterrupted compound growth, rather than chasing high but volatile returns. Hidden Erosion Factors: Beyond market performance, factors like management fees, taxes, and unexpected life events can significantly reduce actual returns. These are often overlooked in traditional financial projections but can have a substantial impact on long-term wealth accumulation. Prioritize Certainty and Control: Instead of relying solely on speculative market returns, seek out financial strategies that offer more guarantees and put you in control. Consider incorporating tools like properly structured whole life insurance that provide consistent growth, tax advantages, and financial flexibility. Remember, you only get one shot at this - make it count by focusing on certainty rather than chance. Got Questions?
